I.S. ChroniclesINTERACT CLUB – Island School’s Interact Club brought seven out of the record-setting 159 volunteers who helped the Friends of Kamalani and Lydgate Park during last week Saturday’s Community Work Day at Lydgate State Park (see photo on the right). Interact Club keeps busy as they volunteer to weed and plant at the National Tropical Botanical Garden.

ENGLISH – Nine students from Philip Steinbacher’s 8th grade English class had their letters to the editor published in the Friday, April 28 issue of The Garden Island (go to http://bit.ly/1iiY8b7 to read their letters). Kira Smith, Micah Asuncion, Sierra Jones, Emily Sullivan, Kyle Leibow, Haley Sharp, Aliana Ho, Bianca Colagreco and Summer Mead made Island School proud!

CHEMISTRY – In Ms. Haverkort’s Chemistry class, students are learning about the chemistry of underwater fireworks. They added bleach to hydrochloric acid solution in an Erlenmeyer flask. Chlorine gas is produced and this travels down a tube to the bottom of the graduated cylinder. The graduated cylinder is filled with water, where solid calcium carbide

pebbles are added to react with water to form acetylene gas. The acetylene gas then reacts with the chlorine gas and this causes a small explosion with the emission of light, which creates underwater fireworks.

MAYOR’S YOUTH TRACK MEET – The track meet will take place at Vidinha Stadium, Saturday, April 26 at 9 a.m. and Sunday, April 27 at 10 a.m.; Saturday is for the Elementary School Division and Sunday is for the Middle School Division. Support our keiki, as they have been practicing hard during their PE classes.

KIF TENNIS QUALIFYING TOURNAMENT – All finalists in last week Friday’s state qualifying tournament at KCC will go to Maui May 1-3 for the state championships. Davis Huffman ‘15, won the boys singles bracket; Alex Obert ‘16, and Katy Davidson ‘15, won the girls doubles bracket and Michaela Fitzgerald ‘16, came in 2nd in the girls singles bracket. Good job to all Voyager tennis players who participated in the tournament!

THIRD GRADE TRIP (see photo below) – Mrs. Liesse’s 3rd grade class left for O‘ahu on Wednesday morning and will return tomorrow, Friday evening. Yesterday, they toured the USS Missouri at Pearl Harbor and the Children’s Discovery Museum, then skated at Ice Palace. Today, they will tour Bishop Museum, take a dip in Wet’n’Wild Hawai‘i’s water park and have activities at Waikiki Aquarium. Tomorrow, before coming back to Kaua‘i, the kids will have a museum tour and an art lesson at Spalding House, followed by a self-guided tour of Honolulu Zoo and concluding with activities at the Box Car Race Track. Wish them fun and safe travels!

Dinner may never be the same! Gabri LaFratta ‘17, and Cambria Ort ‘17, dissect chicken wings. Last week, Ms. Mink’s Biology and Honors Biology

classes investigated muscles and bones.

Making Beautiful Music Together

Island School3-1875 Kaumuali`i HwyLihu`e, Kaua`i, Hawai`i, 96766

Students in grades 4-12 entertained a huge crowd last night at the Kaua‘i Community College Performing Arts Center.

“Keep Calm and Sing Show Tunes,” our spring concert, featured an assortment of Broadway hits spanning decades. Kudos to

music director, Philip Steinbacher and accompanist Rose Alfiler for providing such a quality opportunity for our students.
