Now in its second edition, Helping Your Anxious Child has been expanded and updated to include the latest research and techniques for managing child anxiety. The book offers proven effective skills based in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) to aid you in helping your child overcome intense fears and worries.

Hold on to your kids [by Gordon Neufeld and Gabor Maté] BSC/303/.327/NEU In Hold On to Your Kids, Dr. Neufeld and Dr. Maté explore the phenomenon of peer orientation: the troubling tendency of children and youth to look to their peers for direction--for a sense of right and wrong, for values, identity and codes of behaviour. But peer orientation undermines family cohesion, poisons the school atmosphere, and fosters an aggressively hostile and sexualized youth culture. It provides a powerful explanation for schoolyard bullying and youth violence; it is an escalating trend that has never been adequately described or contested until Hold On to Your Kids. Once understood, it becomes self-evident – as do the solutions.

Love and anger [by Nancy Samalin and Catherine Whitney] BSC/649/.64/ SAM Longtime director of Parent Guidance Workshops, Samalin here offers practical advice on coping with anger when dealing with children. Her take-home message is that feeling angry is okay; acting in anger is something else again. With the writing help of Whitney (Uncommon Lives, 1990), Samalin presents specific problems parents have related to her and offers techniques that have worked for others. Readers will recognize the situations, identify with the anger and anguish of both children and parents, wince at the mistakes parents make, and even laugh out loud (kids do say the darndest things). Although Samalin focuses on everyday problems of ordinary parents, she also tackles special situations, such as those faced by divorced parents and parents of disabled children.

Raising healthy eaters [by Henry Legere] BSC/641/.1/LEG One of the most important steps that parents can take to prevent childhood obesity or simply to get their children to a healthier weight is to teach them good eating habits. Indeed, when kids learn that a snack should be an apple or carrots instead of chips or a candy bar-a deceptively difficult lesson to teach-they are better equipped to resist the temptation of junk food on a regular basic. In Raising Healthy Eaters, Dr. Legere offers 100 easy-to-follow and easy-to-implement tips for parents of children of all ages and eating preferences.

The reason I jump [by Naoki Higashida] BSC/616/.85/HIG Written by a very smart, very self-aware, and very charming thirteen-year-old boy with autism, this is a one-of-a-kind memoir that demonstrates how an autistic mind thinks, feels, perceives, and responds in ways few of us can imagine. Parents and family members who never thought they could get inside the head of their autistic loved one at last have a way to break through to the curious, subtle, and complex life within. With disarming honesty and a generous heart, Naoki shares his unique point of view on not only autism but life itself. His insights--into the mystery of words, the wonders of laughter, and the elusiveness of memory--are so startling, so strange, and so powerful that you will never look at the world the same way again.

The sibling effect [by Jeffrey Kluger] BSC/155/.2/KLU This work explores what scientists and researchers are discovering about sibling bonds, the longest-lasting relationships we have in our lives. Nobody affects us as deeply as our brothers and sisters, not parents, not children, not friends. From the time we, and they, are born, our siblings are our collaborators and co-conspirators, our role models and cautionary tales. They teach us how to resolve conflicts and how not to, how to conduct friendships and when to walk away. Our siblings are the only people we know who truly qualify as partners for life. In this book, the author, a science writer explores the complex world of siblings in a way that is equal parts science, psychology, sociology, and memoir.
