This demarcation of men and women’s business is very common in traditional societies around the world. However men in Western cultures have not exactly been welcomed into birthing rooms until recently. Today, many men are only the second or third generation of fathers who have attended women at birth. This short history of birth attendance may mean that men may not yet feel comfortable or confident in being present at a birth and how to best support you during such an important life event.

You may wish to consider discussing with your partner how you would like to be supported at your baby’s birth. Up until this point in time, he may not have deeply thought about what would be required of him during the birthing process and may be ambivalent about his role. Men can provide fabulous and caring support at birth because there is no one in the room who will know you better. However, if men are not prepared and feel scared, their fear, anxiety and adrenaline can slow down your labour or even make it stop altogether. Adrenaline is equivalent to hitting the brakes at a birth. Women are designed to give birth only when they feel it is safe to do so. This comes back to millions of years of survival instincts that are still inbuilt in the mammalian brain, the part of the brain that women go to when they birth. Therefore, if your man is losing the plot, your body will not be able to let go and progress easily through the birthing process.

On the flip side, a man who feels prepared to support his partner and who is confident in his role can be a real asset in the birthing room. His loving presence and support can increase your levels of oxytocin, the hormone of love, that allows the birth to progress and will ultimately ensure heightened feelings of love and ecstasy after you

birth your baby. These hormones are designed to bond mother, father and baby together so that they literally fall in love with each other at birth.

You yourself may have done a lot of preparation for the birth, but the take home message here is that your man also needs to have done some training too for this important life-changing event. Consider providing him with some resources that appeal to him. An excellent book for men is called, Men at Birth by Australian author, David Vernon. He also wrote an online article entitled, “Men at Birth – Should Your Bloke Be There?” You may also recommend he read a copy of Vernon’s article to help him gage his preparedness for the birth. Lucy Perry, another Australian author, also wrote a guide for men called, Cheers to Childbrith, that is worth considering as a resource. And if your man is just not going to sit down and read a book, a great piece written by Kelly Winder, the BellyBelly Website Creator, called, “A Guide to Labour and Supporting Her for Dads-to-Be,” would be another useful read.

Birthing is not one of those moments in life when you can just wing it or leave it up to chance. Like other important life events, you want to be prepared and make this birth the best moment of your life. You may wish to consider private prenatal classes outside of the hospital setting with a qualified educator as you will often find that the class sizes will be smaller and better able to cater to your individual needs. It is important when choosing a childbirth preparation course that it is designed to equip you with a set of skills to confidently approach the birth of your baby as well as prepare your partner in how he can best support you. This is the day you become a family so being well prepared can be the key to having a positive start to your life together.

Men at Birth Is Your Man Ready to Support You? – by Regina PowerIn today’s day and age, there is the expectation that men will attend the births of their children. If we look at the origins of men at birth in Australian culture, the Aboriginal people saw birth as strictly, “women’s business,” and actually demarcated areas where women gave birth with symbols to restrict the entry of men into the birthing space.

Regina Power has a Masters Degree in Counseling Psychology, is a Certified Doula and Calmbirth® Practitioner. She runs weekend classes in Berry, NSW just 45 minutes south of Wollongong. www.southcoastcalmbirth.com.au Ph: 4464 2244

Parents around Australia are learning the many benefits of Infant Massage. These include reduced crying, improved sleep, relief from colic, reflux and constipation. Establish a close, loving communication and relationship with your baby and learn the correct techniques from a Qualified Instructor. A truly gratifying experience for both parent and child.

Expectant mothers who learn skills to relax and trust the process of childbirth are more likely to feel calm, confident and less likely to need intervention. A survey of nearly 3,800 couples who attended Calmbirth® Pre Natal Education Programs around Australia has revealed that nearly half required no analgesia, compared with the average of one in 10. Furthermore, while more than half of the respondents had felt anxious, frightened or very frightened before attending a Calmbirth® course, this had dropped to 2.6 per cent afterwards.

Regina Power of South Coast Calmbirth® now teaches this course in Berry, NSW. Regina has been teaching since 2006 and is highly regarded by her clients as an effective prenatal educator who is able to impart the knowledge and skills that enable couples to make their birth experiences positive.

The Calmbirth® Pre Natal Education is the best possible start you can give yourself and your partner at the beginning of such an amazing journey

sDiscover the difference a Doula can make to your birthing experience. Studies in the USA and UK have proven that you can achieve a 25% shorter labour, a 30% reduction in analgesia use, a 40% reduction in oxytocins use, a 50% reduction in caesarean rate and a 60% reduction in epidural requests when you have a professional support person by your side.

Did you know that you can communicate with your baby before they speak? Using baby sign language with your baby has been found to result in less tears, less frustration and a calmer, happier baby. Not only does baby sign language reduce frustration; it is great for language development, vocabulary building and brain development. Group bookings available.

Often what I say to new mums is to trust your instincts, and listen to your baby. The reason babies don’t come with a manual is because each model is different, responds differently to its environment, and thrives on different fuel.

So introducing food to baby is no different. Over time there have been varying ideas on when to start to introduce foods, mostly varying from 4 to 6 months. I tend to recommend waiting until 6 months, purely because that is generally the time most babies become interested in food and have the coordination and dexterity to match. They are mostly sitting up by now and capable of holding some food for themselves. It generally doesn’t do any harm to let baby start to explore foods before the six months. If they’re not ready, they will only play around with it a little or put small amounts into their mouth and to start with will actually eat very little.

This is the basic concept of a fast growing trend in baby feeding called “Baby Led Weaning”. This suggests that by six months, most babies will be able to start to feed themselves and can be allowed to determine what and how much to eat. They can sit with the family and pick at the food that the family are eating. It also means that there is less need to spoon feed your baby. You are basically waiting for signs from the baby.

Introducing solid food should be a fairly gradual transition. In the early phases, particularly if you are starting solids before 6 months, their breast milk will be providing most of their nourishment. Some babies won’t be interested until 8 months, so don’t be stressed if they are not eating until then.

My general rules are:

• Make it nourishing and healthy and keep it simple. My preference is to start them on small amounts of avocado, pumpkin, sweet potato, banana, pear or other vegetables. Grains can be difficult for them to digest and cause constipation in the early stage.

• SLOW AND GRADUAL: Start one food at a time. Wait for 3 days before introducing the next food. This is particularly important if your baby has a sensitive stomach, for those getting constipated, colic, have a family history of allergies, eczema or food intolerances as it makes it easier to establish what foods are upsetting them.

• Avoid introducing sweets, biscuits, juices, processed, refined (white breads etc) and fast foods for as long as possible (or never) and you will have less chance of having a ‘fussy eater’.

But importantly, allow mealtimes to be an enjoyable experience. It should be relaxed and a time to share with family.

Introducing Solid Foodsby Kellie Ellington

From the moment our baby is born, we are faced with a wide range of opinions and decisions about how to feed, how often to feed, how we should settle baby, the best sleeping position, co-sleeping or not etc and it can be overwhelming.

Where do they get this from? I believe it is learned; learnt by what kids see at home and around society in general. What is acceptable at footy training, what they get away with at school, what they see on TV. Everything impacts, so we as parents (and I have 4 children from 9 to 19 yrs) have to be vigilant.

Bullying has already started? What next? I have several rules that I teach and subscribe to, so it is important to make sure in bullying that you as a parent cross the T’s and dot the I’s. Simply saying we have a “no touch policy” doesn’t help the victim if they have a broken nose or bruising.

I use the 3 C’s

1. Communication. When bullying occurs everyone needs to know about it. So tell your teachers, tell your parents, tell your friends. Nobody needs to, or should suffer in silence. Talk to the bully and try to make friends; even if your not really friends, the facade may be enough for the bully to leave you alone.

2. Control. If the school or place where the bullying is occurring is unable or unwilling to do anything about it, the next best thing to do is avoid the bully at all costs. But should this be unachievable and bullying becomes physical, then we need to control the bully. This could be by holding, taking the bully to the floor and controlling etc. The idea here is to use leverage in a non-violent manner and prevent the bully from hitting or kicking you until help arrives. This is a last resort after you have tried everything else.

3. Cut a deal. Here we have controlled the bully and he or she can’t hurt us. We have gained the leverage to be able to negotiate a truce or get out of there safely. Once the bully has been defused and understands that we have tools to stop him or her and in a non-violent manner then he/she will hopefully leave you alone.

This will all come about with education and confidence; we see confidence coming from a properly accredited and experienced martial arts school. So do you homework and try a few schools.

In my 27 years martial arts experience there has been a lot of changes in society and discipline. Not to mention the respect that people either do or don’t have for each other. It seems to me that the biggest effect on bullying is discipline and respect. If the child isn’t educated on discipline they will act out and if they don’t understand respect then they won’t be able to control themselves with self-control.

Learn lots of insights about early childhood development, and have lots of fun with this structured program that lays solid foundations for school years.

The Gymbaroo program is currently a 5 year program designed to follow the way that the brain grows and develops from birth through to reading and writing at school. The program is designed sequentially from 6 weeks of age right through to starting school. I have heard parents say, after only completing one term of classes, “I have done Gymbaroo”, and not actually understood that they have only completed a tiny part of the program. They have only stimulated the part of the brain that was active at that time.

The activities are specially designed for each age group so that you can make sure that you maximise each 6 months of development for your child and understand the importance of that stage for learning and development.

We are really lucky in the Illawarra to have so many good childcare services. You can find out information about your chosen service on the Australian Children’s Education and Care Authority website at www.acecqa.gov.au

Another important factor when choosing care is affordability. The Government offers Child Care Benefit (CCB) payments and Child Care Rebate (CCR) payments to offset the cost of care to families. You need to know if your service is Approved or Registered care.

Registered child care providers are not considered Child Care Benefit approved and usually include relatives, friends or nannies and may also be provided by people in pre-schools, kindergartens and OOSH services.

Approved child care is child care that has been approved by the Australian Government for CCB purposes because it meets certain standards and requirements.

So what are your options for child care?

Preschool or Kindergarten is often a shorter day program for children aged 3-5 years old during school term.

Centre-based care (Long Day Care) are often open from early morning until early evening. Centres are open at least 48 weeks of the year.

Family Day Care is a network of experienced educators who provide care and developmental activities in their homes for children. Child care is flexible and can be suited to each family’s needs including care outside normal working hours.

Before/After School Care or Out of School Hours (OOSH) care is supervised care and recreation for school-age children for before and after school care, on pupil-free days and during school holidays

Occasional Care Services provide short periods of care for children under school age. Families can use occasional care on either a regular or irregular basis.

What to look for when investigating childcare options.

• The type of care that you need

• Hours that suit you and location

• Is the provider approved or registered

• Do they provide meals

• The cost of the care

• Do you feel comfortable there

• What is your first impression

• Is the service clean with lots of information

• Are the educators qualified and experienced

• What is their ‘settling in policy’

You can find local child care options at:

www.parents-guide.com.au

www.careforkids.com.au

www.echildcare.com.au

www.shellharbourkids.com.au

And for more information on child care you can go to www.mychild.gov.au

It can be such a stressful experience when parents need to think about going back to work after the birth of their child. Some families are lucky enough to have friends or grandparents to help out with childcare but usually at some point parents need to source alternative care options for their under five year old.

Involve the birthday child from the beginning! Birthdays are one of those few occasions where children are particularly motivated to be exceptionally helpful, so begin the planning by having the birthday boy or girl brainstorm some party theme ideas. Once your child has come up with a few ideas you can work together to develop a much needed ‘to do’ list. This will include a guest list, your invitations, decorations, entertainment, a chosen venue, party food and the cake!

To Hire or Host?Once the birthday child has decided on a theme, your next step is to decide if you are going to hire an entertainer or if you would prefer to host the party yourself.

A hired entertainer or party service really can create lasting memories for your child, not to mention take the stress out of having to entertain a group of excited children! But with a birthday (or 4!) to celebrate each year, this option isn’t always realistic let alone within budget.

So if you have decided to play hostess it is essential you plan your party. Your main objective is to make sure that all the guests have fun on the day. So organise the games, decorations and food a couple weeks prior to the party date and be sure to recruit one or two helpers to assist on the day. This way you can put your hostess hat

on when the guests arrive and you will not feel burdened with tasks such as serving the food.

The MenuKeep it simple! In our experience, children are usually too excited and having far too much fun to be overly fussed when it comes to the food. Finger food is usually the most convenient option when it comes to catering for your child’s party, so aim to offer a few healthy snacks like fruit kebabs as well as the always popular party pies, sausage rolls and mini pizzas. You might also want to include a couple of fun party foods that coordinate with your chosen theme. For example ‘biscuit wands’ for a fairy party or jelly boats (made in half an orange) for a pirate party.

Be aware of any food allergies guests may have prior to the party by asking each parent of any known allergies in advance. This way you can prepare alternative food for those with allergies, and remember it’s always best to avoid anything with nuts!

Entertain Me!The number one secret to a successful birthday party is keeping the children entertained for the duration of the party. Party games are a must of course, however rather than simply focusing on capturing each child’s attention why not aim to captivate their imagination too!

by Sarah ImpelmansYour child’s birthday is soon approaching and it is time to start putting some thought into how you are going to celebrate another year of growth and milestones. Whether you have decided on a small intimate party for five or a whopping giant party for 20, you’ll want to ensure it is your child’s best party yet. So where do you start?

Revamp some old classics to co-ordinate with your chosen party theme. Musical statues can be renamed ‘princess poses’, pass the parcel may be ‘pass the pirates treasure’ and pin the tail on the donkey could become ‘pin the eye-patch on the pirate.’

When it comes to party games, the common old favourites are usually a winner with the under fives, as toddlers and pre-schoolers are often experiencing these games for the first time. However when it comes to primary school age children a little more time and thought will be required. Aim to come up with at least two unique party games or activities. Remember by the age of 8 and 9 the majority of children will have attended quite a number of birthday parties. Although they will still enjoy the old classics like musical statues, it is always super fun to surprise them with a game they have not yet played before.

Get CreativePlanning and incorporating a craft activity in to the party really can create a fun element. Ribbon wands are great for a dance theme, custom t-shirts are great for both boys and girls, fairy wands are perfect for a fairy party, beaded bracelets are popular with the girls and kaleidoscopes are always a great option for the boys. If you decide to add a creative experience to your list of activities, keep it relevant to your chosen theme and plan to fit it in after the children have participated in a physical game to ensure they do not get restless.

Let the Games Begin!Dress Up Relay Race: Organise a basket of dress up clothes, hats and headbands. Some old adult’s shirts and trousers will be ideal as the children will be stuffing balloons inside the clothing. On the day of the party have the children split into two teams (three teams for a group larger than 12 guests). Once you have the children’s attention, explain that each team will be required to work together to help dress a fellow team member in the clothing provided and then stuff an allocated number of balloons

inside. The child must then run to a designated point (without dropping any balloons), and put on a headband or hat before running back to their team. The team who have all their hats on first are announced as the winners! Recommended for ages 8 +

Peg Race: Have 4 to 6 children pair up and stand a metre or two in front of the remaining guests. Place around 40 pegs a metre away from the children who have partnered up. Have the children decide who out of the two will be the ‘pegger’, then let the participating children know that once the music has started the ‘pegger’ must pick up one peg at a time and peg it to their partner. Then simply press play and watch the fun unfold. The pair with the highest number of pegs once there are no further pegs remaining are the winners.

To make this game a little tricker for the older kids, shout out some instructions as to where they will be required to peg their partner. E.g. ‘peg one to their shoe’. Recommended for ages 6 +

The Mystery Box: A slightly quieter activity that is bound to keep your guests guessing. After filling a covered box with mystery items each child then has a go at feeling each one and guessing what they think each item is. The child or children that guess correctly receive a small prize. Recommended for ages 5 +

Treasure Hunt: This is a great game to play towards the end of the party when children are beginning to get a little restless. Rather than simply handing out favour bags why not have the children search for their party bag contents outdoors (or indoors if space will allow). For the older children you could come up with a scavenger hunt and have each child find the party favours on their list. Recommended for ages 3 +

It’s Party Time!If you have hired an entertainer or professional party service – well it’s over to them. However if you’ve opted to play host this time around then remember; the true secret to hosting the perfect party is to simply create a fun atmosphere; so put your smile and dancing shoes on and have fun with it!
