Let’s prepare the way of the Lord
John the Baptist lived in an age of anxiety. Many good people longed for an end to the world’s
disorder and a fear of a return to previous catastrophes. Sin had poisoned politics, economics, law,
and everyday social interaction. A Jewish tradition, recorded around 175BC, suggested that no more
prophetic messages would come from God. God had become silent, while the world shouted noisily.
In Luke’s gospel today, he pinpoints John’s exact place in human history, but John’s remedy for
cleaning out Israel’s spiritual and moral corruption could be applied to every time and place in
history, and not just to a nation or a culture but to individuals. For this new prophet, the answer lay
in the necessity for every person to purge all personal corruption, for every person of faith to make
a clean break with his or her past and to prepare to recognize the savior to come.
In his gospel, St. Luke connects John’s message of repentance and baptism with Isaiah’s call to
straighten out all roads. In Isaiah’s time, it was the custom of kings and rulers to visit their holdings
on a regular schedule. Before these visits they sent couriers with orders to repair the roads before
the king’s arrival. In using this image, Isaiah makes it clear that we all have an obligation to
straighten out our lives, to fill in the potholes, to find the most direct and easiest way to come into
the presence of the King of Kings.
Preparemos el camino del Señor
Juan el Bautista vivió en una época de ansiedad. Muchas personas buenas anhelaban el fin
del desorden del mundo y el temor a un regreso a las catástrofes anteriores. El pecado había
contaminado la política, la economía, el derecho y la interacción social cotidiana. Una tradición
judía, registrada alrededor del año 175 antes de Cristo, sugería que no habría más mensajes
proféticos de parte de Dios. Dios se había callado, mientras el mundo gritaba ruidosamente.
En el evangelio de Lucas de hoy, señala el lugar exacto de John en la historia humana, pero el
remedio de John para limpiar la corrupción moral y espiritual de Israel podría aplicarse a todos los
tiempos y lugares de la historia, y no solo a una nación o cultura, sino a individuos. Para este nuevo
profeta, la respuesta radica en la necesidad de que cada persona elimine toda corrupción personal,
de que cada persona de fe rompa con su pasado y se prepare para reconocer al salvador está por
venir.
En su evangelio, San Lucas conecta el mensaje de arrepentimiento y bautismo de Juan con el
llamado de Isaías para enderezar todos los caminos. En el tiempo de Isaías, era costumbre de los
reyes y gobernantes visitar sus posesiones en un horario regular. Antes de estas visitas, enviaban
correos con órdenes de reparar las carreteras antes de la llegada del rey. Al usar esta imagen, Isaías
deja en claro que todos tenemos la obligación de enderezar nuestras vidas, de llenar los baches, de
encontrar la manera más directa y sencilla de entrar en presencia del Rey de Reyes.
