Upcoming Events
Thursdays with Mary: Please join us in the recitation of the rosary on the Thursday mornings in May. The rosary will be said af-ter the 8:00 am Mass. (This will be around 8:25 am.) Even if you are unable to get to church for the morning Mass, please consider joining in to pray the rosary for Mary, our Mother and the patroness of our church.
We will also be praying the rosary on Satur-day, May 6th at 7:40a.m and every Saturday morning in the month of May before the 8am Mass. All are welcome!
The Saint Mary’s Rosary Society meeting will take place on Saturday, June 10th at 1pm in the church.
The next Parish Council meeting will be on May 22 at 7:30pm in the cafeteria.
Our next Parish Food Drive will be held the weekend of May 27-28, 2017 and will be for the Salvation Army in Passaic.
On Monday, May 29 there will be no novena or 7pm Mass due to the Memorial Day holi-day.
A special Diocesan dinner in celebration of the Diocesan 80th Anniversary will be held at the new Legacy Castle on Route 23 South in Pequannock, New Jersey on Friday evening, September 8th, 2017 beginning at 6:30 pm. For tickets please got to the website: rcdop.org/80. Thank you!

St. Mary’s Assumption Church is in need of catechists for our religious ed-ucation program. We will provide the necessary training if needed. Thank you for your support!
First Communion Registrations Anyone interested in enrolling their child in the program will have to fill out an application in the parish office. Please bring a copy of the child's birth certificate and baptism certif-icate. Registrations will begin on June 1,2017 and end June 30, 2017. Only registered parishioners can enroll.
Parish Food Drive Next Weekend

Next weekend, May 27 and 28 we will hold our monthly food col-lection. This is an invitation to all of the community. You are being encouraged to help someone who is worrying about their food supply and their meals. This month the food will be donated to the Salvation Army in Passaic. The Salvation Army offers food ser-vice to the community all year round.
Your donations must be non-perishable food items. The following items are very useful: ce-real, oatmeal, pasta and sauce, canned meats, canned vegetables, soups, tuna fish, white rice, beans, canned milk or packaged milk, peanut butter, jelly, juice and canned fruits.

Nuestra próxima Colecta de Comida Parro-quial se llevará a cabo el proximo fin de sema-na del 27 y 28 de mayo y será distribuido al Salvation Army de Passaic.
La próxima reunión del Consejo Parro-quial será este lunes, 22 de mayo a las 7:30pm en la cafetería.
El lunes 29 de mayo, no habrá novena ni Misa de las 7pm debido al día festivo de re-cordatorio.

de alimentos. Esta invitación se dirige a toda la comunidad parroquial. Se le está animando a ayudar a alguien que está preocupado por su suministro de alimentos y su comida. Este mes, la comida será recolectada para el Salvation Army en Passaic. El Salvation Army le ofre-ce comida y servicios a la comunidad el año en-tero.

WHY THE CROSS?
"Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven" (Mt 24:30).
The cross is the symbol of a Christian, that teaches us our true vocation as human beings.
Today we seem to witness the progressive disappearance of the symbol of the cross. It disappears from the houses of the living and from the tombs of the dead, and disappears above all from the hearts of many men and women who are annoyed to see a man nailed to the cross. This is not sur-prising, since from the beginning of Christianity St. Paul spoke of false brethren who wanted to abolish the cross: "For they are many, and now I say to you with tears, who are enemies of the cross of Christ" (Phil 3 , 18)
Some claim that it is a cursed symbol; Others that there was no such cross, but it was a stick; For many the Christ of the Cross is an impotent Christ; There are those who teach that Christ did not die on the cross. The cross is a symbol of humiliation, defeat and death for all those who ignore the power of Christ to change humiliation into exaltation, defeat into victory, death to life and the cross on the road to light.
Jesus, knowing the of the rejection of the preaching of the cross, "began to tell His disciples that He should go to Jerusalem and suffer much ... to be killed and to be resurrected on the third day. Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him: 'Far from you, Lord, no way will that happen to you!' But He said to Peter, "Get out of my sight, Satan! ... for your thoughts are not of God, but of men" (Mt 16: 21-23).
Peter did not know the power of Christ and did not have faith in the resurrection, that is why he wanted to turn him away from the way that leads to the cross, but Christ teaches him that he who opposes the cross takes sides with Satan.
Satan, the one full of pride, hates the cross because Jesus, humble and obedient, overcame him in "humbling himself, obeying to death and death on the cross," and thus transformed the cross into victory: "... for which God exalted him and gave him a name that is above every name "(Phil 2: 8-9).
Some people, to confuse us, ask us: Would you love the knife that killed your father?
Of course not!
1st: Because my father has no power to convert a symbol of defeat into a symbol of victory; But Christ does have that power. Or do you not believe in the power of the blood of Christ? If the land that Jesus stepped on is the Holy Land, the cross bathed in the blood of Christ, with more reason, is the Holy Cross.
2nd: It was not the cross that killed Jesus but our sins. "He has been wounded for our transgres-sions and he is crushed for our sins, the chastisement that gives us back the peace is silent on him and by his wounds we have been healed." (Is 53, 5). How can the cross be a cursed sign, if it heals us and gives us peace?
3rd: The story of Jesus does not end in death. When we remember the cross of Christ, our faith and hope focuses on the resurrected one. That is why for St. Paul the cross was a cause of glory (Ga 6:14).
IT SHOWS US WHO WE ARE
The cross, with its two stems, teaches us who we are and what our dignity is: the horizontal tree shows us the meaning of our walk, to which Jesus Christ has united, becoming like us in everything, except sin. We are brothers of the Lord Jesus, children of the same Father in the Spirit! The tree that bore the Lord's open arms teaches us to love our brothers as ourselves. And the vertical tree teaches us what our eternal destiny is. We have no abode here on earth, we walk into eternal life. We all have one origin: the Trinity that created us out of love. And a common destiny: heaven, eter-nal life. The cross teaches us what our real identity is.

¿POR QUÉ LA CRUZ?
“Entonces aparecerá en el cielo la señal del Hijo del Hombre” (Mt 24,30).
La cruz es el símbolo del cristiano, que nos enseña cuál es nuestra auténtica vocación como seres humanos.
Hoy parecemos asistir a la desaparición progresiva del símbolo de la cruz. Desaparece de las casas de los vivos y de las tumbas de los muertos, y desaparece sobre todo del corazón de muchos hom-bres y mujeres a quienes molesta contemplar a un hombre clavado en la cruz. Esto no nos debe ex-trañar, pues ya desde el inicio del cristianismo San Pablo hablaba de falsos hermanos que querían abolir la cruz: “Porque son muchos y ahora os lo digo con lágrimas, que son enemigos de la cruz de Cristo.” (Flp 3, 18)
Unos afirman que es un símbolo maldito; otros que no hubo tal cruz, sino que era un palo; para mu-chos el Cristo de la cruz es un Cristo impotente; hay quien enseña que Cristo no murió en la cruz. La cruz es símbolo de humillación, derrota y muerte para todos aquellos que ignoran el poder de Cristo para cambiar la humillación en exaltación, la derrota en victoria, la muerte en vida y la cruz en ca-mino hacia la luz.
Jesús, sabiendo el rechazo que iba producir la predicación de la cruz, “comenzó a manifestar a sus discípulos que Él debía ir a Jerusalén y sufrir mucho... ser matado y resucitar al tercer día. Pedro le tomó aparte y se puso a reprenderle: '¡Lejos de ti, Señor, de ningún modo te sucederá eso!' Pero Él dijo a Pedro: ¡Quítate de mi vista, Satanás!¡...porque tus pensamientos no son de Dios, sino de los hombres!” (Mt 16, 21-23).
Pedro ignoraba el poder de Cristo y no tenía fe en la resurrección, por eso quiso apartarlo del ca-mino que lleva a la cruz, pero Cristo le enseña que el que se opone a la cruz se pone de lado de Sata-nás.
Satanás el orgulloso y soberbio odia la cruz porque Jesucristo, humilde y obediente, lo venció en ella “humillándose a sí mismo, obedeciendo hasta la muerte y muerte de cruz,” y así transformo la cruz en victoria: “...por lo cual Dios le ensalzó y le dio un nombre que está sobre todo nombre” (Flp 2, 8-9).
Algunas personas, para confundirnos, nos preguntan: ¿Adorarías tú el cuchillo con que mataron a tu padre?
¡Por supuesto que no!
1º. Porque mi padre no tiene poder para convertir un símbolo de derrota en símbolo de victoria; pe-ro Cristo sí tiene poder. ¿O tú no crees en el poder de la sangre de Cristo? Si la tierra que pisó Jesús es Tierra Santa, la cruz bañada con la sangre de Cristo, con más razón, es Santa Cruz.
2º. No fue la cruz la que mató a Jesús sino nuestros pecados. "Él ha sido herido por nuestras rebel-días y molido por nuestros pecados, el castigo que nos devuelve la paz calló sobre Él y por sus llagas hemos sido curados". (Is 53, 5). ¿Cómo puede ser la cruz signo maldito, si nos cura y nos devuelve la paz?
3º. La historia de Jesús no termina en la muerte. Cuando recordamos la cruz de Cristo, nuestra fe y esperanza se centran en el resucitado. Por eso para San Pablo la cruz era motivo de gloria (Gál 6, 14).
Nos enseña quiénes somos
La cruz, con sus dos maderos, nos enseña quiénes somos y cuál es nuestra dignidad: el madero hori-zontal nos muestra el sentido de nuestro caminar, al que Jesucristo se ha unido haciéndose igual a nosotros en todo, excepto en el pecado. ¡Somos hermanos del Señor Jesús, hijos de un mismo Padre en el Espíritu! El madero que soportó los brazos abiertos del Señor nos enseña a amar a nuestros hermanos como a nosotros mismos. Y el madero vertical nos enseña cuál es nuestro destino eterno. No tenemos morada acá en la tierra, caminamos hacia la vida eterna. Todos tenemos un mismo ori-gen: la Trinidad que nos ha creado por amor. Y un destino común: el cielo, la vida eterna. La cruz nos enseña cuál es nuestra real identidad.
