THE PASTOR'S PAGE

Growing up, I went to a Catholic elementary school

that was right across the street from our house. I remember

Valentine’s day celebrations at that school for a very par-

ticular reason. If you brought valentines cards you had to

bring one for everybody in the class, you couldn’t just

bring cards or candies for your best friends but had to

bring them for everyone. Certainly, this has its pros and

cons, but one of the things that it helped me to do, was to

de-romanticize the holiday a little bit. So often Valentines is

looked at as being a day to spend with your romantic love

and that is the sole purpose for the holiday. But love is not limited to solely romantic feelings and gestures and rela-tionships. Love is so much more. The best example of how to love comes from none

other than God himself. 1 John 4:8 tells us that God himself

is love, we are frequently reminded to love others with the

same love which we have received from Christ, Philippians

2 tells us that we should have the same love and mindset

as Jesus, and in John 15 Jesus outlines what it means to be

in relationship with God through his analogy of a vine with

branches. And he summarizes this with one command,

love each other as I have loved you.

If you struggle to love people I think there is a simple

yet challenging question that you must ask yourself. Have I

grasped the depth of which God loves me? I believe that

as we continue to grow in god’s love for us and under-

stand exactly what he has given up to restore us to rela-

tionship with him, we will inevitably fall into deeper love

with the people (all the people) whom God so loves. It is

not a forced love for others either, it is a love that is

demonstrative of the same love which Christ himself

showed for us. It is a love of joyful sacrifice for the good of

another. It is a love without strings attached. It is a love

that is not conditional upon actions present past or future.

It is a love of genuine care for each other.

February is known for its love because of Valentine’s

day, but this Valentine’s day let us remember the love of

God and remember that it is not just our family and friends

that we love, but we get to love everyone whom we

come in contact with.

So I ask, "Will you be my valentine?"
