Queridos amigos de Santa Luisa:

La palabra “Sabbath” se refiere al séptimo día, en el cual el Señor descansó después de seis días de creación. Nosotros, los que busca-mos imitar a Dios en todo, también estamos llamados a tomar un día completo de descanso cada semana para renovar nuestra relación con Dios y con los demás. Los cristianos descansan en el “octavo día,” el día de la resurrección del Señor, cuando toda creación se hizo nueva.

Me encontré con un artículo en la revista US Catholic: “Cómo conservar sagrado el Sabbath de tu familia.” La autora, Annemarie Scobey, dice que ese se ha vuelto un tema de conversación en su familia porque ellos viven junto a unos judíos ortodoxos que observan de manera estricta el Sabbath cada sábado. “Su Sabbath va desde la puesta del sol el viernes hasta la puesta del sol el sábado. Durante este periodo de 24 horas, ellos no pueden manejar su auto, cocinar, limpiar su casa, ir de compras, cortar el pasto, lavar la ropa, hacer reparaciones en su casa o jugar en torneos de futbol. Ellos no hacen absolutamente ningún trabajo físico y comen muy poco.” David, el vecino judío de Scobey, le dijo: “En el Sabbath pasamos mucho tiem-po de visita con otras personas y hablando con ellas, porque no pode-mos hacer muchas cosas más. La mayoría de la gente con la que nos reunimos también son judíos ortodoxos porque son los únicos que tienen tiempo libre para hacer lo mismo.” Scobey dice que esta con-versación le ha hecho darse cuenta de que aunque su familia obser-vaba el Sabbath yendo a Misa cada domingo, muy pocas veces lo consideraban como un día completo en el cual renovar relacio-nes con la familia y los amigos. Dear friends of St. Louise,

The word “Sabbath” refers to the sev-enth day, on which the Lord rested after the six days of creation. We, who seek to imitate God in everything, also are called to take a full day of rest each week for renewing our relationship with God and with each other. Christians rest on the “eighth day,” the day of the Lord’s resur-rection, when all creation was made new.

I came across an article in US Catholic, “How to Keep your Family’s Sabbath Holy.” The author, Anne-marie Scobey, said it became a topic of conversation in their fami-ly’s home because they live next to Orthodox Jews who strictly observe the Sabbath each Saturday. “Their Sabbath runs from sundown Friday to sundown Saturday. During this 24-hour period, they may not drive, cook, clean, shop, mow their lawns, do laun-dry, repair problem areas of their home, or play in soccer tourna-ments. They don’t do any physical labor at all and eat very little.” Scobey’s Jewish neighbor, David, told her, “On the Sabbath we spend a lot of time visiting and talking with other people, because we can’t do much else. Most of the people we visit with are also Orthodox Jews because they’re the only ones who have the time off to do the same thing.” Scobey said that this conversation made her realize that even though her family observed the Sabbath by going to Mass each Sunday, they had rarely observed it as a whole day in which to renew relationships with family and friends. Instead, after Mass they have filled Sunday with tasks like any other day of the week.

Scobey and her husband Bill decided to investigate the true meaning of Sabbath further. She explains, “In the book Sab-bath: The Ancient Practices, author Dan Allender makes a case for Christians to take the Sabbath as holy. He defines holy as ‘set aside’ and writes, ‘Sabbath is the day we practice for eternity. It requires that we receive, intend and protect the day. The bind is that if we let the day happen spontaneously, it will usually dissolve into the route of least resistance.’”

For Scobey’s family now, observing Sabbath means that in-stead of spending the day at the house after Mass, they go somewhere and spend time together in nature. It seems if they stay home, the attraction of their “to-do” list and doing household tasks is simply too strong for them. How would your household feel about trying that?

Another suggestion: What if Sunday were a day that you fasted from using social media? Many Americans spend six hours a day on social media. And what is the most common excuse for missing Mass? I don’t have time. Hmmm! And what is the major roadblock to building real face-to-face relationships today? Too often, it is our electronic devices. Setting those aside could free up time to be with God and each other.

Summer is a great time to think again about how to observe the Lord’s Day as an entire day – not just the hour or so for Mass – and about why our loving Father wants us to do so.

New Parish Center Front Office Schedule Beginning August 20

Starting Monday, August 20, the schedule for the Parish Center main door and front office will be 9AM to 5PM Monday-Friday.

Grief Support Group

St. Louise Grief Support Group’s next meeting will be today, Sunday, July 15!

Our usual meeting date is the 3rd Sunday of the month from 3 – 4:15PM in the Chapel (Parish Of-fice). This group is a safe and sacred place to be heard without comment or advice giving. We practice being present to each other in our pain, accepting ourselves and each other as we are, and trusting that our listening hearts offer healing and blessing. Loss and the experience of grief is not limited to death of a loved one. Loss of a marriage, job, dream, relationship, health, all result in grief and pain. Hope and heal-ing are the pathway forward.

We’ll have refreshments from 3-3:15PM and the meeting will follow from 3:15-4:15PM. Come and experience healing!

Immediate help is available! If you are suffering grief for any reason and would like immediate sup-port, please call David Gehrig, 425-214-5466, for help. Listening ears, caring hearts and experi-enced volunteers are available to walk with you along this painful road from loss to new life.

Jubilee Reach—Service Day August 25, 2018

Jubilee Reach provides wrap-around services in Bellevue that include 36 community programs, 38 Club Jubilee Programs that run in seven middle schools and three elementary schools, as well as a thrift store. Jubilee Reach is sponsoring their 14th annual Service Day. This event brings together people in the Eastside community to serve at local public schools and help qualifying Bellevue homeowners with certain home repairs.

Join many Eastside churches, businesses, organizations and others in serving the community by helping 22 public schools prepare classrooms (includes sewing “chair pockets” to slide over backs of students’ chairs to hold books), clean and prepare buildings and beautify grounds for the school year; and enhanc-ing 35 Eastside homes by working with the City of Bellevue to help selected homeowners with projects like outside house painting and yard work. Volunteers can sign up to help a full or half day.

School Office Closed for Summer Vacation The office will be closed through the month of July. We re-open Wednes-day, August 1. Office hours for the week of August 1 are Mon-day – Friday, 7:30AM - 3:30PM.

St. Louise School Welcomes New Pre-K Teacher and In-structional Assistant in 2018-19 We are excited to announce that Wendy Blank has been hired as our new Pre-K teacher! (Karen Salmon announced her resignation earlier.) Wendy has substitute-taught in practically all the St. Louise grade levels as well as in our specialist clas-ses, and this past year was a co-teacher in our kindergarten. Wendy also spent six years running a Pre-K Vacation Bible School and five years teaching primary grades in the Seattle Public Schools. We also warmly welcome Donna Neil to our staff, she will be assisting Wendy in Pre-K, every Monday through Thursday morning. Donna will also help head playground supervisor Lisa McKenna in co-supervising the first lunch recess at noon. She previously was a preschool assistant at Holy Family School for 14 years, so she'll have great ideas to bring from Kirkland to Bellevue.

School, Faith Formation, Youth and Young Adult Ministries

Four Youth Receive Pope Pius XII Boy Scout award On June 3, Alexander Bowman, Miguel Gutierrez-Torres, Rafael Gutierrez-Torres and Zach Ebner (youth from our Parish as well as a friend from St. Monica’s) earned the Pope Pius XII Boy Scout award. The Pope Pius XII religious em-blem program is designed for Boy Scouts and Venturers of the Catholic faith. In order to receive this award many steps must be taken. Our youth met almost every week for 1-2 hours, following the guidelines in the manual provided by the National Catholic Committee on Scouting. They talked about why they chose to participate in this group (a completely elective deci-sion that few Scouts follow.) They discovered the similarities in the Boy Scout program "Scout law" and our Catholic faith, discussed the value of relationships and the importance of mutual respect, trust and friendship. They talked about the universal call in the Sacrament of Baptism and the power of young adults to influence society. They each had to interview 2 people in occupations they are interested in to get a better understanding of those professions and discover if there is

possible conflict with their faith in those roles. They each researched two possible ministries they can pursue and again how they can maintain and support their faith in those roles. They also had a panel discussion including Annarose as an engaged person, Deacon Sam as an ordained person and a married couple (from Zach's parish) looking into life states. For our final group meeting we took a five-mile hike as a morning of reflection. Each boy had to pick an issue in society and/or with the Church, research the topic, then pre-sent it to the group. We took that topic and reflected on how it can affect their choice of occupation, ministry and life state. The final step in this program was a "board of review" with Fr. Gary. The boys are pictured with Fr. Gary after completing their board of review. Congratulations to Alexander Bowman, Miguel Gutierrez-Torres, Rafael Gutierrez-Torres and Zach Ebner!

El Diario de Misas es un instrumento espiritual que nos urge a preguntar, “Dios, de qué manera pue-do convertirme en la mejor versión de mí mismo esta sema-na?” Tenemos diario de misas disponibles en el vestíbulo para que todos puedan comenzar ($2.00 donación sugeri-da).

36th Annual Catholic Single Parent Family Campout The 36th Annual Catholic Single Parent Family Campout is being held August 17, 18, and 19, at Millersylvania State Park.
