I had miscalculated a bit on that Sunday as well. We had advertised that the meeting would begin at 1:00 p.m. and needed to honor that ex- pectation, even though the chili cook-off lunch had concluded fifteen or twenty minutes before. It turned out to be a graced experience. I was able to ask the gathered faithful to help me write a prayer appropriate to our congregation’s 50 th anniversary. Grant us the grace to keep building upon this rock as we continue becoming one Body of transformation, embracing all people through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. As we look forward to this new year—celebrating our past and embracing our future—it occurs to me that the icy parking lot on the 2 nd Sunday of Advent was like a parable. We can see the marks of how others have gone before us. Indeed, sometimes it helps to follow that well-worn path. Oth- er times it is beneficial to adjust a little bit and get traction on a fresh path. It is critical to exercise caution, not going so fast as to end up in a ditch. Likewise, we can also get stuck by going too slow, and end up spinning our wheels. We should expect that we will regularly fall short, and need to back up and try again. Faith, after all, is about persistence, not perfection. In this 50 th year in the life of St. Peter’s, I am thankful for your presence, prayers, and service as a member of this community. We certainly do have the gift of a solid foundation. I also believe we have a call to continue our journey of becoming the fullest expression of Christ’s Body that we are able to be in this place and time. The Good News is that we are not alone. Our gracious and ever- lasting Father has been with us all along—guiding, nurturing, and sustaining us through Jesus Christ our Lord with the power of the Holy Spirit! Amen.

Dear people of St. Peter’s, On Sunday morning, December 9

th the freezing rain was noisily ricocheting off my windshield. I

had hoped that the weather forecast might have been exaggerated just a bit by forecasters who

delight in these rare occasions when the weather becomes the lead story on the news. So I drove

to St. Peter’s in order to see for myself. They were right. It was an easy decision to call off our

services for that day.

What was not as easy was attempting to exit the parking lot! My 2-wheel drive sedan met its

match on those slopes—which under normal weather conditions do not seem all that steep.

Two weeks earlier we had our annual parish meeting. I had miscalculated a bit on that Sunday as

well. We had advertised that the meeting would begin at 1:00 p.m. and needed to honor that ex-

pectation, even though the chili cook-off lunch had concluded fifteen or twenty minutes before. It

turned out to be a graced experience. I was able to ask the gathered faithful to help me write a

prayer appropriate to our congregation’s 50th anniversary.

Many people raised their hands and offered words and phrases which would highlight our grati-

tude for what has been, our commitment to who we are, and our hope for what is to come. Thank

you for your help! This is my best, not-too-long summary of our thoughts and prayers from that

afternoon:

Gracious and everlasting Father, you have been with us from our beginning. You

have guided, nurtured, and sustained this parish for the past fifty years. Thank

you for the solid foundation we have received from those who have gone before

us. Grant us the grace to keep building upon this rock as we continue becoming

one Body of transformation, embracing all people through Jesus Christ our Lord,

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

Amen.

As we look forward to this new year—celebrating our past and embracing our future—it occurs to

me that the icy parking lot on the 2nd

Sunday of Advent was like a parable. We can see the marks

of how others have gone before us. Indeed, sometimes it helps to follow that well-worn path. Oth-

er times it is beneficial to adjust a little bit and get traction on a fresh path.

It is critical to exercise caution, not going so fast as to end up in a ditch. Likewise, we can also get

stuck by going too slow, and end up spinning our wheels. We should expect that we will regularly

fall short, and need to back up and try again. Faith, after all, is about persistence, not perfection.

In this 50th year in the life of St. Peter’s, I am thankful for your presence, prayers, and service as a

member of this community. We certainly do have the gift of a solid foundation. I also believe we

have a call to continue our journey of becoming the fullest expression of Christ’s Body that we are

able to be in this place and time. The Good News is that we are not alone. Our gracious and ever-

lasting Father has been with us all along—guiding, nurturing, and sustaining us through Jesus

Christ our Lord with the power of the Holy Spirit! Amen.

Chris & Melinda Aufmuth Maggie & Christopher

308 Scotch Rose Lane Greer, SC 29650

Melinda: 864-752-7762

Melinda and Chris moved to Greenville from Chicago about 2 years ago. Melinda was raised an Episcopalian, and they decided to try St. Peter’s. They love the sense of com-munity at our church and wanted this opportunity for their chil-dren. Maggie is in the eighth grade at Northwood Middle and performs with the SC Children’s Theater. Christopher, who is in the fourth grade at Buena Vista Elementary School, enjoys playing football and soccer. Melinda is a free lance corporate event planner, and Chris works at Michelin. They enjoy traveling, playing games and spending time together. The family usually attends the 10:30 a.m. service. Please welcome this friendly family to St. Peter’s.

Randy & Cathy Hawkins 6 Macle Ct.

Travelers Rest, SC 29690 Cathy 864-884-2888 Randy 864-884-2889

The Hawkins lived in Virginia 20 years before moving to Greenville. They bought a house in Foxcroft near Bill and Melissa Hawkins, who helped them with the decision to try St. Peter’s. They particularly loved the openness of the church and all the outreach programs. Cathy and Randy attended the Welcome Class and were received into our church at the last Confirmation Service. Cathy retired from St. Francis Hospital as an RN work-ing in Case Management, and Randy is the Assistant Principal at Northwood Middle School. Randy’s daughter lives in Green-ville with two children, and his son is retired military living in S. Korea with his wife and one child. In their spare time, Randy enjoys playing golf, fishing and traveling. Cathy loves being with her Yorkie, Bella Rae. Please welcome this outgoing couple to St. Peter’s. They usually attend the 10:30 a.m. service.

January Fellowship will be hosted by Eric and Thiela Schnau-fer from 6:00 to 8:00 PM on Saturday, January 19yh. We look forward to seeing you then. Their address is 6 DelNorte Blvd, Greenville.

Please bring your favorite wine and /or an appetizer to share! Soft drinks will be provided.

Let’s gather to celebrate another year with St. Peter’s friends and catch up on what we have been doing.

The ‘Gingerbread’ Church

In revisiting past St. Peter’s traditions, it was brought to our attention that the Middle School Sunday School used to build a gingerbread replica of St. Peter’s with the engineering help of John Page. John’s plans and tips were passed to the middle school class for a redo this year, in honor of our 50

th anniver-

sary. However, it was quickly discovered that John’s meticu-lous plans were for the original church building which is now Stockstill Hall. David Rhodes came to the rescue, and using the latest technology, including Google earth, he built a to-scale model of our current sanctuary out of foam board for the class to use. Working diligently with only one Sunday School session at their disposal, Debbie Cannada, Kyle Davis, David Rhodes, Grace Cope, Owen Wagner and Peter Morse made our ‘gingerbread’ church as seen in the pictures. Many thanks to all who helped make this happen and gave us a connection with St. Peter’s Christmas past!

Outreach Advocates Present:

Food Delivery Volunteers

Needed

Volunteers Needed for all months in 2019: United Ministries Food Deliveries St. Peter's Outreach Advocates are looking for volunteers to assist with the monthly deliveries of non- perishable food items to United Ministries. Here is a brief overview of the pro-cess. We currently need volunteers for every month in 2019. If you attend the 8:30 service and would like to help, please let us know. We can arrange for someone to put the food in the bins after the 10:30 service for you to pick up at your convenience. 1. Parishioners place food contributions in the wagon in the

narthex or in the bins labeled "United Ministries Food" in the back hallway across from Stockstill Hall.

2. After the 10:30 service on Sunday, retrieve the wagon from the front of the pews on the right hand side of the church. Load the contents of the wagon and any food in the bins by Stockstill Hall in the back into your vehicle. Leave the empty wagon in the narthex. Or unload the wagon into the bins, and pick the items up during the week if that works better for you. 3. Food can be delivered to United Ministries at your conven-ience during the week. The address is: 606 Pendleton Street, Greenville. 864-232-6463. The food pantry is manned Monday- Friday from 8 AM - noon. Drive around to the loading dock in the back and knock on the door. If you need to make the delivery after noon, go into the main office and let the receptionist know you have a delivery. She will send someone to open the pantry door and help unload. On Friday, the office closes at noon, so do not attempt to deliver after noon on that day. That's all there is to it! To volunteer, please email Lauren Hill

at [email protected] or call 864-385-0869, and specify which month you can help. Thanks!

#MeToo-charist

Our parish created a powerful liturgy of prayer and healing for those in our larger community affected by sexual violence. In response to the wide-spread epidemic of sexual trespass in our culture, and in an effort to share the Advent message of hope, we held a #MeToo-charist on December 16th. More than 60 courageous individuals, survivors and their support communities, were welcomed to reflect on Scripture, hear words of comfort and encouragement, receive the laying on of hands, and join together at the Lord's Table.

We worked in collaboration with other area clergy and a variety of community agencies that assist those traumatized by sexual assault. The clergy discretionary fund, supplement-ed by the evening's offering, gifted $500 each to Jasmine Road, Julie Valentine Center, Safe Harbor, and Shepherd's Gate. Pictured above are The Rev. Carrie Nettles, the chaplain from the Julie Valentine Center, The Rev. TJ Remaley, the As-sociate Pastor for Family Ministry & Discipleship at St. Giles Presbyterian Church, and The Rev. Mia McDowell, the Assis-tant Rector at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church in Spartanburg.
