FROM THE VICAR

Dear Friends STYLES OF SUNDAY WORSHIP As this magazine comes out, we shall only just be starting the new pattern of Sunday services at St Leonard’s Church. I hope that the change over to new service times will happen smoothly. Three other churches in town start their service at 9.30am so our change to this earlier time will not be unusual, though some may find it awkward. The biggest loss will be for the small Matins congregation. Though they will still have Matins once a month, the traditional service of Holy Communion according to the Book of Common Prayer will now be on that same Sunday rather than giving them a second Sunday in the month for an old order of service. I am sorry about this, but hope that we may between us find another way of meeting these particular needs. Meanwhile, it is hoped the new Informal Worship service that we have titled “The Meeting Place” will gain momentum, as those involved explore ways of developing this service and as it is widely promoted. This will be a service in a contemporary style, for people of all ages, with songs led by a music group, relevant teaching, and also activities for children. Please do tell people about this service, particularly any who may be interested in attending church but who would look for something less formal than the other services we offer. Meanwhile at St Luke’s a similar service of Informal Worship has been running for a while on the first Sunday of each month titled “Energize”. Please encourage people to attend this too. Indeed, please do invite people to come along and try any or all of the services that are offered in our two churches. A survey of people in church would most likely indicate that most of us have started church going because friend or family first invited us to come along. It may be that others will only discover the joys and benefits of church life if you invite them sometime to come along too. Do, please, keep this in mind. You will find the new schedule of services for both churches on the Calendar pages of this magazine and on the last page. Best wishes to you as we move from a quiet summer back into a busy autumn term. There will be much happening in our parish life together in these coming months. Hugh Atherstone

FROM CHRISTINE

Dear Friends,

I wonder what this next couple of months will bring to us all. As the recession continues

to bite and the swine flu is ever spreading, I thought I would like to focus on some good

news for a change! My 4th

grandchild is arriving at the beginning of September. What

joy! It seems the more there are to love, the more love you find to give. How grateful

the family are to God for his many blessings.

Maybe it is because I am going to be a grandma again, that I keep thinking about the

wonder of God‟s love for us. It is a love which is unconditional and always accepting but

a love which is not content for us to stay the same. The love of God transforms the lives

of those who seek him. Love does that doesn‟t it! Most of us know what a

difference it is to be in the company of someone who loves us. Yet God gives us his

love, not only to make us feel good, but to share it with others.

There seems to be an extra emphasis on the theme of sharing God‟s love in the next few

months in the churches. At the beginning of September at St Luke‟s there is a baptism of

twins, where the theme will be sharing the love of God in the church.

In October, the focus will be on sharing the love of God worldwide as we celebrate God‟s

provision at the Harvest Festival.

At St Luke‟s Patronal Festival in October, there will be a celebration of the ways that

God‟s love has been shared throughout the last 50 years through the ministry of this

church in the Chyngton area.

Then in the evening, representatives from the Churches Together in Seaford (CTS) will

be reflecting on ways they share God‟s love – whether it be with family and friends, in

the community, throughout UK or overseas.

On November 21st

we will be encouraging you to bring the money you have collected in

your jars/pots for mission support to both churches. I hope you are still saving!

Surely all these ways of sharing God‟s love is important, especially in these days of

uncertainty and insecurity. God‟s love is meant to be shared. If we do not tell people –

how else will they know?

Every blessing,

Chris

at

St Luke’s Hall, Walmer Road

Dealing with death of a loved one is one of life‟s most

difficult and stressful experiences.

During the grieving process many people find it helpful to meet with

others who understand.

Life after Loss runs for 6 weeks and is aimed for people who have been

bereaved from between 4 months and 2 years:

* to understand the emotional and physical experiences

of grief

* to decrease a sense of isolation through contact

with others in similar situations

* to share personal experiences within a safe,

caring and understanding environment

* to develop healthy coping skills and activities

Messy Church has been running successfully now for over three months in St Leonard’s Church Hall. The

children come with their families and take part in many craft activities whilst parents chat and enjoy tea,

coffee and bacon butties! The craft activities are all linked to a theme and last approximately one hour before

they are cleared away and a focused session takes place on a Bible story or theme. Teaching has involved

drama, puppet shows and singing over the past few months, and have been thoroughly enjoyed by children and

parents alike.

Messy Church is due to restart on Sunday 6th September from 9.30am-11.15am in St Leonard’s Church Hall. It

is aimed at families with babies and children of all ages, along with grandparents, aunts and uncles! We look

forward to seeing you there!

The Parish Flower Festival

September 4th, 5th, 6th & 7th - St Leonard’s

10.00am to 5.00pm

Theme: “O Praise Ye The Lord”

Yes, it really is two years in September since the last flower festival. This year we are looking at praise

through hymns and music interpreted by flowers. It is also an opportunity to celebrate the centenary

of the dedication of the splendid organ at St Leonard’s. The festival will run from the Friday morning

until the Monday evening with all the usual services on the Sunday (Choral Evensong in St Leonard’s

at 6.00pm on Sunday 6th).

If you would like to make a contribution towards the flowers to celebrate an anniversary or special

event in your life; or in memory of a loved one, then please contact myself or Jane Riley on 894858.

If you wish, and let me know in good time, mention will be made of your contribution and the

purpose on the back of the programme - this is of course optional.

Parish Festival Market

Saturday 5th September, 10.00am to 1.30pm

The market will be held in the churchyard and St Leonard’s Hall. This market will include

refreshments, ploughman’s lunches, a parish bumper cake stall, collectables, bottles, plants, fancy

goods, cards, books, a grand raffle and many more side shows. Items for the stalls will be collected

nearer the date, but do start to put aside now items you would like to contribute. Please make this a

red letter date in your diary and start spreading the word amongst your friends and family. It is

always a splendid parish occasion so let’s make this year better than ever!

All monies raise will go towards the completion of the “re-ordering” at St Leonard’s.

Thank you in anticipation of your support.

WANTED FOR

CHRISTIAN AID

HALF A DOZEN HOUSEHOLDS TO INVITE FRIENDS AND NEIGHBOURS ROUND TO TEA

or coffee, if you'd rather

"It's teatime and you are all invited" comes up in the third week in September. It would be magnificent if there were half a dozen households in each of our churches that would hold a tea-party [or coffee-morning] at home for friends and neighbours - in 2008 there more than 2,000 such parties across the country. Invite people round, put the kettle on, get out the best china [or even the workmen's mugs !], and serve tea. You could either just put out a collecting box on the table, or with the invitation put something like "We'd like a donation for Christian Aid - £5 or so". You might like to make a cake or cakes for the occasion, or just go and buy Fairtrade biscuits or cake; I have a couple of recipes that Christian Aid suggest, Tropical carrot cake or triple-chocolate-chunk-muffins. If you are involved with a school, something could be done to involve the parents and or teachers, or maybe you could organise something else at work. If you can get at a computer and want to see more go to www.christianaid.org.uk/teatime, there you will find all sorts of ideas, recipes, posters, invitations and so on: you could send off to Christian Aid for their "It's Tea-time " pack at P.O. Box 100, London, SE1 7RT.: or you could just talk to me and I can reproduce for you what you need. You might not raise much money at each party, but, as I said before, together we can make a difference, and every penny raised will be a step towards eradicating poverty the world over. I reported in the last magazine that we had done well in our collections this year and had raised £ 2,151; in fact we did even better, just before I went away on holiday another bag was found with three roads' envelopes, and therefore a further £ 136. I have not yet found out who it is, but thank you whoever collected from Bramber (?) Close and Cottages, you collected £22.37, well done. Colin Pritchard telephone 894899

A new Alpha course will be starting up in the autumn at the

St. Leonard’s end of the parish. If you would like to come to an Alpha Course to learn more about the Christian Faith or know of anyone that

would like to, please let them know.

Lynne Crowther first became involved in running Brownies 27 years ago before she and her

husband Paul moved to Seaford. When Lynn heard her daughter, Anna‟s pleas to help at

Brownies to keep it open she responded promptly. Since then she has held various positions of

responsibility and taken up many roles, most recently as Tawny Owl. She has been a wonderful

leader, giving encouragement and inspiration to many girls, widening their horizons and teaching

them new skills. And other leaders have much enjoyed working with her. Creative,

hardworking and dedicated, she has always been cheerful and obliging, and is the most “prepared

for anything! leader I have ever met. Lynne did, in fact, attempt to retire last year, but because

another leader had to leave the area suddenly, she very kindly stayed on, in the hope of finding

further help. We still need that help. But meanwhile, Lynne‟s time is up. On behalf of the

Brownie and Guide Association, the parents of current and previous Brownies, the helpers and

leaders, and the Brownies themselves, we express thanks to Lynne for her dedication and

enthusiasm and all round good nature in running the 2nd Seaford Brownie Pack. Wendy

Shorten, (Barn Owl) and Hugh Atherstone (for the church).

If anyone is interested in helping with the Brownie Pack, please speak to Wendy on 07882

403222. We need you!

2nd Seaford Brownies

I am sure you would like an update on what is happening in our Brownie Pack. Meetings during the summer saw us out and about, with a town trail, two visits to

Sealarks camp site. A walk to Hope Gap, and a beach walk.

Brownies have joined the National “Change the World” challenge and planned, jointly with the Guides, an evening to raise funds for Water Aid. The Guide leader gave a power point presentation of the work of Water Aid and the Brownies, with

the Guides had learned several relevant songs. The Brownies raised nearly £60, which will be put with the money raised at their Guide Water Aid evening.

As this was a special evening I enrolled two new Brownies and presented eight others with their Adventure Badge Certificates. Unbeknown to me a surprise was

in store. I invited everyone to join us for tea or coffee but I was interrupted when Martin, our new curate, got to his feet and said “change of plan Lynne,” and

we were all invited to join in a lovely array of food smuggled in by the Brownie Parents. They even managed to smuggle in Paul my husband. I was given a lovely huge bouquet of flowers and the largest card you have ever seen to mark

my retirement from Brownies.

Our new District Commissioner, and Guide Captain, Vicky Buckley is prepared to head the unit in September, but will be doing her best to find a more permanent Guider for the Pack. Please, if you know of anyone who is able to help contact

her on Seaford 492316.

As a Brownie Guider for many years has given me immense joy and it has been a privilege to work with our girls – I can truly recommend it.

LETTER from Ann Thompson We read, and hear on T.V. so much about the bad behaviours of young people that I think sometimes we forget just how much some of our groups and organizations are do in in the community. I had the pleasure some weeks ago of attending an evening with 2nd Seaford (ST LEONARD’S) Guides. They had arranged an evening to raise money for “Water Aid”. The evening started with a video of what life is like without water in so many countries. This was followed by a short play by the Guides depicting different lifestyles of girls living in Britain and Nepal showing the ease in which we, in our western world, just turn on a tap for water and that of the young girls in other countries who have to walk many kilometres to fetch a small amount of often dirty water before they can wash, or cook. Following a short interval for coffee and home made cakes, we had a Quiz to test whether we had been listening properly to the video!! We were entertained by well rehearsed Guides singing songs written especially for the evening, which raised in excess of £100. Altogether an enjoyable couple of hours. Next year our Guides - from our Church, are going to join in “Olave 2010” which is an International camp to celebrate 100 years of Guiding. Each Guide has to find £300 and they are all working very hard to fundraise for this important event. So much time is given by the Guide Leaders to encourage these young people and it is hoped that when they hold their fundraising coffee morning on September 12th in St Leonard’s Hall, that we will ALL be there to add our pennies - and pounds - to help and support them in their effort to get them all to this once in a lifetime international camp in July.

LOST AND FOUND PROPERTY The Vergers at St Leonard’s Church have a box of items left in church: including umbrellas, caps, capes, spectacles, maybe an earring, etc. If you remember that you may have left something there, speak to a Verger, any morning of the week. We also have a watch and jewellery in the Parish Office.

C M S news from Kathmandu, Nepal

In Kathmandu the poor live in slums. The Missions Commission of Nepal is determined to share the love of

Christ with them.

Marama and Dev Kumar began giving lessons to the 20 - 30 children in the slums, teaching them to read and

write. They hope to reach out to the parents with the Gospel of Jesus.

SHOEBOXES FOR ROMANIA

Once again, it’s the time of year when we start collecting items to pack into shoeboxes

to send to Romanian families through Link Romania Shoebox Appeal. Each year more

people from St Leonard’s and St Luke’s seem to catch the vision and the boxes start to

arrive at the Parish Office from the end of September. Gift boxes are also delivered to

families in Moldova and Albania. Last year we sent 88 boxes.

If you have prepared a box before you will know that the first thing to do is to pick up a

leaflet from the back of either Church which will detail all that you will need to do.

Please ensure that you take a leaflet for each box you intend to send so that you can

complete the customs form and, if possible, fill in the Gift Aid slip. Each year there are

a number of items which are not permitted in the boxes: please check this list before

you start collecting. Chocolate is permitted again but only of EU origin so please make

sure you know what they are. If you need a shoebox a few will be available in the

Parish Office from 1st September.

When your box is complete, please affix £2 to it to cover transportation and bring it to

either Church or to the Parish Office by Friday 6th November. The boxes will begin their

journey shortly afterwards. Many thanks to all of you who so faithfully pack up boxes

each year. They are very much appreciated by those who receive them.

TRIP TO OBERAMMERGAU

There are still a few spaces available with the party going to Austria, Oberammergau

departing 30th

June 2010. For details please telephone Jennifer Low on 01323 893568.

Towering Infoline

We are pleased that the change of service time still allows us to ring for the Sunday morning service

although there is no longer time to fit in the odd quarter peal before the service. With us the quarter peals

are often “odd” with a few errors and stumbles as you may well of heard but we get there in the end.

Quarter peals, which consist of 1260 changes or rings of the bell in one go without stopping, take about

50 minutes to complete and give beginners a chance to consolidate their learning and more experienced

ringers time to learn new methods. We hope to be able to ring an odd quarter on an occasional night in

the week to compensate for the lack of time available on Sunday.

This year has seen a number of the ringers enjoying the gift of grandchildren and the excitement has

crept into the tower along with the odd box of chocolates to celebrate. It must be indicative of the

average age of the ringers that so many are now grandparents. Plans are afoot to ring a special quarter

peal in the autumn which will include the grandparents of children born in the last 12 months although

we have one further arrival to await in September prior to finalising the quarter peal. So do look out this

autumn for news of this quarter peal successfully rung we hope.
