SUNDAY 24TH JANUARY 2016

God’s Vision

The scroll of the prophet Isaiah in Luke 4:17-19 had been read aloud in the synagogue year

after year and some claimed that the message applied to them, to save others from danger but

these were empty promises, no one was able to do it. Jesus, on the other hand, was the first

person who fulfilled the prophesy of Isaiah. Jesus did this in two ways :

First, Jesus alone accomplished the saving mission that God had promised.

Second, Jesus alone renews everything in Himself.

The prophesy applied to Jesus personally because He alone was going to defeat the power of

evil and restore our image and likeness to its original form. Our original image and likeness

was created after God’s own image and likeness but it was twisted and defaced by the power

of sin and death. By the power of His love for mankind, Jesus took our sins on His shoulders

by means of the cross, to liberate us from the bondage of sin and broke the fetters of death. By

being nailed on the cross Jesus washed away our sins with His own blood and by walking out

of the tomb Jesus chained death forever in the dark chamber.

His mission on earth was to liberate us from the fear of death and offer us hope for everlasting

life. The liberation of people’s hearts and minds, setting them free from the bondage of sin is

something no human power can do. Only God, the author of life can give life and renew life.

By nature, evil spirits are arrogant. They certainly will not submit to God’s power, they will

rebel, but they will be crushed. Evil spirits want to keep their kingdom intact, unchanged and

under their control while God’s Spirit breaks the chains of death and lifts people up from their

slavery and slumber. These battles and divisions will go on for some time, but, Jesus will win

the final battle because the mighty strength Jesus used to achieve His mission is nothing else

but the power of the Spirit in Him who is at work and active and Who defeats the power of

evil.

St. Luke tells us that Jesus has power because of ‘the power of the Spirit in Him’

(Luke 4:14). It is not the people who praised Jesus that gave Him authority but rather it is the

Power of the Spirit working in Jesus that banished evil spirits. The same Power cured all kinds

of sicknesses and diseases and liberated people from their bondages. Seeing this the people

praised Him.

Jesus has completed His mission and has gained eternal glory for those who have faith in

Him. We learn to embrace the eternal glory Jesus gave by living an active life in the faith

community. We learn to embrace others as Jesus did because they too are a part of Christ’s

Body. As members of the same Body we should listen to our head who is Christ and do what

the head wants us to do and that is to be active members of God’s Church.

Lenten Program Last year we had a number of the Lenten Prayer Groups held at private homes

around the parish. It was a noble and holy thing to do and I would like to thank

these host families for their generosity and charity work and hope that this year

you continue to do the same.

The ‘Year of Mercy’ invites us to open up ourselves to receive God’s Mercy

through prayers and Gospel discussions, and I encourage you to make the

‘Year of Mercy’ a special time for your spiritual nourishment.

There are folders at the back of the church for Group Leaders to indicate your

interest and another folder for those who would like to join the Lenten Program

and order your book. Please fill your names on these folders and we will order

the Lenten Reflection book for you. Thank you.

Children’s Liturgy of the Word at St Peter Chanel at 8am

Mass. 'Children's Liturgy of the Word' refers to the practice of children leaving the Sunday assembly at the beginning of Mass and gathering elsewhere to celebrate a separate Liturgy of the Word that is more appropriate to their level of understanding. This is for children of primary school age. Parents are welcome to accompany younger children. Helpers are needed for this

very important ministry. Full training provided. Please contact Rosemarie Brady [email protected] or the Parish Office on: 33006099 if you can help.

PASTORAL NOTES:

Lent begins Wednesday 10th February Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fast and abstinence. The law

of fasting binds those who have completed their eighteenth year, until the beginning

of their sixtieth year; the law of abstinence binds those who have completed their

fourteenth year (CCL97, 1251f)

Lent is a penitential season of prayer, self-denial and helping others. In this way,

the whole Church prepares for Easter with those who are to be baptised. Other

celebrations in Lent (e.g. marriage) must take account of the spirit of penance;

musical instruments are only used to sustain singing, and floral decorations are

very simple.

Church Cleaners for SPC Due to people leaving this ministry we are now looking for some volunteers to be

part of the new roster. We thank those who are continuing, your efforts are very

much appreciated. This is only a couple of hours every month or so depending

on numbers. Anyone who would like to volunteer please contact Maria Hill on

Mobile: 0412735615 as soon as possible.

Have you just graduated Year 12? In an effort to help bridge the gap between year 12 school leavers and the wider

Catholic Church, the Youth Evangelisation Office has created a website called

‘www.schoolleavers.org.au’. This website helps the youth to stay connected with

the wider Catholic Church after school.
