The Presentation of the Lord

“We too are called to welcome Jesus who comes to meet us. To encounter him: the God of life is

to be encountered every day of our lives; not now and then, but every day. To follow Jesus is not a

decision taken once and for all, it is a daily choice.” —Pope Francis, Feast of the Presentation of

the Lord, 2019

The Presentation of Jesus in the temple shows him to be the firstborn Son who belongs to the

Lord. With Simeon and Anna, all Israel awaits its encounter with the Savior—the name given to

this event in the Byzantine tradition. Jesus is recognized as the long-expected Messiah, the “light

of the nations” and the “glory of Israel,” but also “a sign that is spoken against.” The sword of

sorrow predicted for Mary announces Christ’s perfect and unique oblation on the cross that will

impart the salvation of God has “prepared in the presence of all peoples” (CCC, no. 529).

World Day for Consecrated Life In 1997, Pope Saint John Paul II instituted a day of prayer for women and men in consecrated life. This celebration is attached to the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord on February 2nd. This Feast is also known as Candlemas Day; the day on which candles are blessed symbolizing Christ who is the light of the world. So too, those in consecrated life are called to reflect the light of Jesus Christ to all peoples. The celebration of World Day for Consecrated Life is transferred to the following Sunday in order to highlight the gift of consecrated persons for the whole Church. Please pray for all those who have made commitments in the consecrated life and be sure to thank them on their special day. May they continue to be inspired by Jesus Christ and respond generously to God’s gift of their vocation.

By Dr. Scott Hahn Gift of Sacrifice

Feast of the Presentation of the Lord

Malachi 3:1-4 Psalm 24:7-10 Hebrews 2:14-18 Luke 2:22-40

Today’s feast marks the Presentation of the Lord Jesus in

the Temple, forty days after he was born. As the firstborn,

he belonged to God. According to the Law, Mary and

Joseph were required to take him to the Temple and

“redeem” him by paying five shekels. At the same time,

the Law required the child’s mother to offer sacrifice in

order to overcome the ritual impurity brought about by

childbirth.

So the feast we celebrate shows a curious turn of events.

The Redeemer is redeemed. She who is all-pure presents

herself to be purified. Such is the humility of our God.

Such is the humility of the Blessed Virgin. They submit to

the law even though they are not bound by it. The drama surrounding Jesus’ conception and birth began

in the Temple — when the Archangel visited Mary’s kins-

man, Zechariah the priest. And now the story of Jesus’

infancy comes to a fitting conclusion, again in the Temple. All the readings today concern Jerusalem, the Temple, and

the sacrificial rites. The first reading comes from the

Prophet Malachi, who called the priests to return to faith-

ful service — and foretold a day when a Messiah would

arrive with definitive purification of the priesthood. Likewise, the Psalm announces to Jerusalem that Jerusa-

lem is about to receive a great visitor. The Psalmist identi-

fies him as “The LORD of hosts … the king of glory.” There is another curious turn to the Gospel story. The sto-

ry nowhere mentions Jesus’ “redemption,” but seems to

describe a religious consecration — such as a priest might

undergo. Saint Luke tells us that Jesus is “presented” in

the Temple, using the same verb that Saint Paul uses to

describe the offering of a sacrifice (see Romans 12:1).

Another parallel is the Old Testament dedication of Samu-

el (1 Sam 1:24-27) to the Temple as a priest. Christ now arrives as the long-awaited priest and redeem-

er. He is also the sacrifice. Indeed, as his life will show,

He is the Temple itself (see John 2:19-21). A service of the St. Paul Center for Biblical Theology www.SalvationHistory.com

SECOND COLLECTIONS IN FEBRUARY

Feb 16,2020 will be the Parish Monthly

Feb 23, 2020 Support the Church around the World The one collection taken up on Ash Wednesday

February 26, 2020 will be for Catholic Charities

NOTE FROM THE PASTOR

On Saturday of this weekend, we will have our second

confirmation retreat for the remaining confirmation

candidates. The candidates will attend the 5:30 PM

Mass on Saturday.

At all the Masses this weekend, we will have the bless-

ing of throats. For the final blessing at Mass, we will

use the blessing for throats prayer. After Mass, we will

offer individual blessing of throats for those who may

want an individual blessing.

Fr. Tully was back in the hospital this week. He has

pneumonia and a respiratory virus. Unfortunately, it set

back his physical therapy for his knee replacement.

Normally, Fr. Tully, Fr. Agustin and I go on retreat in

February. Because of the set back with pneumonia, Fr.

Tully will not be able to go, and I am going to stay be-

hind to care for him. Fr. Agustin will be going. So at

least you will have one holy and pious priest!!

Finally, every pastor dreads hearing about snow com-

ing on the weekend. Attendance is always down. When

attendance is down, the collection is down. Unfortu-

nately, the snow does not stop the bills from coming. If

you can mail in your contribution when weather keeps

you at home, I would appreciate it.

That’s it for now. Until next time, take care. Fr. Earley
