ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST CATHOLIC CHURCH

On this Feast of the Presentation of the Lord there are striking

undertones of the Sacrament of Baptism. Following the Law of

Moses, Joseph and Mary bring their newborn son to the Temple in

Jerusalem. Similarly, parents for generations have been bringing

their newborns to the Church to be baptized. In the Temple, Jesus

is recognized by Simeon and Anna as the Christ, the true Light of

the World. At every Baptism, every child becomes a Christian and

receives the light of Christ. When the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary,

and Joseph return to their home in Nazareth the child grew and

became strong, filled with wisdom; and the favor of God was upon

him. Likewise, parents who have their child baptized accept the

responsibility to train their children in the practice of the faith and

bring them up to keep God’s commandments of loving God and neighbor. Like Mary and Joseph, par-

ents have the great responsibility to help shape God’s dream for their child.

As I preached on Christmas, parents today are quite remarkable. Just observing our parents in our

school, I can assert to their dedication to their children. From dropping their children off at school

each morning, to picking them up every afternoon, and then racing them off to some type of practice

before returning home for night is virtually heroic. Yet with so much going on and high expectations,

I recognize how important things like the practice of our faith could easily become an unintentional

afterthought. With the busyness of life itself, every family and individual needs to be creative to

carve our time each day to encounter Jesus. As a brother priests reminds his parish, “Don’t find time,

make time.” The time we spend in the car racing from one end of town to another would be a great

time to break from the noise of the day and encounter Jesus in prayer. What if a family prayed a few

decades of the rosary as they drove home, to school, or to a game? Reclaim Sunday as the Lord’s

Day. Before heading out to a game or other activity on Sunday, nourish your family and yourself with

Jesus in the Eucharist. We are not depriving God of our presence at Holy Mass, rather we are depriv-

ing ourselves. Such simple things can help each us become like the Holy Family of Nazareth.

del Sacramento del Bautismo. Siguiendo la Ley de Moisés, José y María

Antes de salir a un juego u otra actividad el domingo, alimente a su familia y a usted mismo con Jesús en

la Eucaristía. No estamos privando a Dios de nuestra presencia en la Santa Misa, sino que nos estamos

privando a nosotros mismos. Tales cosas simples pueden ayudarnos a ser como la Sagrada Familia de

Nazaret.

The red Sanctuary Lamp above the Tabernacle burns to remind us of the sacramental presence of Jesus Christ. If you wish to have the Sanctuary Candle burning in memory of a loved one, to honor a special occasion, or a special intention, you can make arrangements with the Parish Office. The cost of the candle is $20 and it burns for one week. A notice of your intention will be posted in the bulletin. Presentation of the Lord Question: Luke’s Gospel is the only one to mention the Presentation of the Lord in the Temple. What is Luke trying to communicate here and what connection does it have with Mary? Answer: February 2 is exactly forty days after December 25, the nativity of Jesus. Jewish law (Ex 13:2, 12) dictated that Jesus, as the firstborn, be consecrated to God. This was done by the parents as they presented their Son in the Temple. Jewish law further specified (Lv 12:2-8) that a mother was ritually impure after giving birth, and that she had to wait a set period of time (forty days for a boy) before she was to offer a sacrifice to the Lord for purification. The convergence of these two Jewish regulations occasions Luke’s account of both the Presentation of the Lord and the Purification of Mary. These days the liturgical emphasis is more on the Presentation of Jesus. Luke highlights the role of Simeon and Anna, two righteous Jews who recognized Jesus as the long-awaited Messiah and praised God for being able to see and experience such a marvel in their lifetimes. Simeon’s prayer concerning the special role of Jesus states that Jesus is “a light for revelation to the Gentiles.” This phrase eventually originated the custom of blessing candles on this day which were to be used in the ceremonies, rituals, and processions throughout the church year. Thus February 2 is also known as Candlemas Day. This day is indeed a rich feast to be savored. ©LPi

►What is Human Trafficking? Human trafficking is a horrific crime against the fundamental rights and dignity of the human person. The United Nations Protocol on Human Trafficking defines it as "the recruitment, transportation, harboring or receipt of persons by means of force, fraud or coercion." The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) Committee on Migration designated February 8 as an annual day of prayer for survivors and victims of human trafficking. February 8 is the feast day of St. Josephine Bakhita, who was kidnapped as a child and sold into slavery in Sudan and Italy. Once Josephine was freed, she dedicated her life to sharing her testament of deliverance from slavery and comforting the poor and suffering. According to law enforcement, some signs to look for include people who work and live in the same place, or who owe a debt to their employers or whose employers have control over their immigration documents. Dear Fellow Parishioners, I want to thank all of your for your generous support this past year. We were able to deliver l64,000lbs of food through our little pantry; were able to keep a couple dozen families in their homes with rent assistance; and, with PGE & NW Natural Gas assistance, we helped unemployed families make it through the year. Our Christmas Box Program did real well this year with 150 boxes and presents for kids delivered. I would like to thank everyone who helped: Susan Hayes and her miracle workers; YLI Ladies who volunteered packing boxes; Bill’s army group for unfailing assistance; and all the families who drove and delivered the boxes. Excellent work!! And thanks for the presents and for the financial support, which none of this could have happened without that. And last but not least, the over worked and under paid St. Vincent de Paul Volunteers who work for us every week. They did a job that couldn't be beat! They truly do God’s work and I would like you to join me in thanking them for their time and hard work. We are in need of 10-20 more volunteers to help with our ministry, so our most hardest workers can have a day off now and then. If you are interested in helping with this rewarding ministry, please give me a call at 503-709-4593. Estimados feligreses, Quiero agradecerles a todos por su generoso apoyo este año pasado. Pudimos entregar 64,000 libras de comida a través de nuestra pequeña despensa; pudieron mantener a un par de docenas de familias en sus hogares con asistencia de alquiler; y, con la asistencia de PGE & NW Natural Gas, ayudamos a las familias desempleadas a superar el año. Nuestro programa Christmas Box fue realmente bueno este año con 150 cajas y regalos para niños entregados. Me gustaría agradecer a todos los que ayudaron: Susan Hayes y sus hacedores de milagros; YLI Damas que se ofrecieron como voluntarias empacando cajas; El grupo del ejército de Bill por asistencia inagotable; y todas las familias que condujeron y entregaron las cajas. ¡¡Excelente trabajo!! Y gracias por los regalos y por el apoyo financiero, que nada de esto podría haber sucedido sin eso. Y, por último, pero no menos importante, los Voluntarios de San Vicente de Paul que trabajaron para nosotros cada semana. ¡Hicieron un trabajo que no podía ser mejor! Realmente hacen el trabajo de Dios y me gustaría que te unas a mí para agradecerles por su tiempo y trabajo duro. Necesitamos 10-20 voluntarios más para ayudar con nuestro ministerio, para que nuestros trabajadores más duros puedan tener un día libre de vez en cuando. Next weekend is Commitment Weekend for the Archbishop’s Catholic Appeal. If you received a personalized commitment card in the mail, please bring it to Mass with you as we join together to support our Catholic Church in western Oregon. If you did not receive a commitment card in the mail, pledge envelopes will be available during Mass and are also in this weeks bulletin. This next week, please read the Archbishop’s Catholic Appeal materials you received in the Parish Bulletin today and prayerfully reflect on the level of commitment you will make next weekend. The Archbishop’s Catholic Appeal provides substantial financial support to essential ministries that support parishes in our Catholic Church in wester Oregon. These programs provide education and faith formation at all levels and provide a Catholic presence for tens of thousands of people. When we stop to count our abundant blessings, we are aware of how truly blessed we are. The Archbishop’s Catholic Appeal is an invitation to share your blessings and support for the Gospel mission here in western Oregon. Your pledge is also a sign of your gratitude for God’s generous abundance. While we can never out-do God in generosity we are called to join in the mission of the Gospel as we put forth the gifts of life, goodness, and grace through the sharing of our own blessings from God.
