What Do We Cling To?

The comparison of wisdom to material wealth is a common theme in the Old Testament, of course, this theme matches the teachings of Jesus in today’s story of the rich man. This gospel episode could go down as one of the greatest unsolved mysteries of the New Testament. We never hear what eventually happened to the rich man; we never find out what decision he made, and never hear the rest of the story. Some folks tend to assume that he was too attached to his belongings to give them up. But I think that dismisses him too easily, because an encounter with Jesus changes people: the blind sees, the deaf hear and the paralyzed walk. Perhaps, the rich man who suffered from a different kind of blindness was also changed. I think St. Mark leaves this story open ended as a way of telling us that our lives are also open-ended because we have free will to make our own choices. So, what will we choose to do as we also encounter Jesus at various times and situations as we travel life’s road? The rich man in today’s Gospel wanted to know what we all want to know…how should we live in this life so that we might live forever in the world to come? He sought what today’s Psalm calls, “wisdom of heart.” He learns that the wisdom he seeks is not a program of works to be performed, or behaviors to be avoided. So, Jesus tells him, observing the commandments is essential to walking the path of salvation; but it can only get us so far. What then are the many possessions that keep us from giving ourselves totally to God? What are we clinging to…material things, comfort zones, relationships, or a stubborn attachment to a particular sin? How hard it is sometimes to give up those things, to let them go. So often, the things we possess, the things we think are so important are not that important at all and we don’t possess them, they possess us. What are you clinging to that you need to let go? Perhaps like the rich man in our story it will not happen overnight, maybe it will take a long time, maybe even a lifetime. Peace and blessings and may those 101 angels continue to watch over you. Deacon Joe
