Police Information Checks

Keeping all parishioners and volunteers in the ministries

safe is an ongoing process. Part of that process is main-

taining up to date Police Information Checks. The

Archdiocese requires the PIC’s to be redone every four

years for all volunteers in HIGH RISK ministries. If you are

in a High Risk ministry and your PIC is four years old or

more, you will need to apply for a new one.

Please call Patrick Rivest at 780.672.9275 if you require

more information, or if you would like a referral letter to

begin the process with the police.

Refugee News Our Families: There has been no word from Refugee and Immigration Canada on our families. They have completed all interviews, clearances, and medicals and are simply waiting for a visa and flight date. Pray for them as living in Turkey with-out work is difficult and demoralizing. Volunteers: The Refugee Centre at Messiah Lutheran Church, in which our parish is a partner, is in need of committed volunteers. The Centre is helping three families from Eritrea settle into Camrose by providing child-care a few mornings a week while the mothers can attend English class. Help is also needed for transportation on an ongoing basis within Camrose. The Centre needs volunteers who wish to become involved in the life of these families, able to strike up a friendship, and tolerant of the challenges that newcomers face. To discuss becoming a Camrose Refugee Centre Volunteer, call Joe McMorrow at 780-678-2827.

Stewardship Reflection

January 28th - Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time

In today’s Gospel we hear proclaimed the beginning of Jesus’

public ministry. He teaches. He heals. And all are amazed.

By their baptism, Christian stewards realize they are called to

do the same in their lives. They are called to be the light of

Christ each day. As we bring closure to the beginning of this

new year, now is a good time to ask the Lord to fill our

hearts with courage and faith, so that we too may publicly

minister in his name; that we may be liberated from our inse-

curities and fear so that we can share the Gospel authorita-

tively and work to heal at least one wounded relationship in

the coming months ahead.

From the Pastoral Team’s desk...

Living in the Word of God Archbishop Smith issued a Pastoral Letter on Thursday, Septem-ber 14th, the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. Entitled Living in the Word of God, the letter invites us all to renew our focus on Scripture as we answer the call of the Holy Father Pope Francis to listen to the Word of God and then to put it to practice. There are a limited number of copies available at the parish office. Living in the Word - When we have encountered Jesus Christ and been transformed by his mercy and love, we naturally want to tell others about it and invite them to be one with us in a community of joy! The making known to others of what God has done for the world in Jesus Christ, and for each of us in our own individual lives, is what is meant by giving witness. you can financially support.

last voyage of St. Francis Xavier. The total cost of the win-

dows is $114,000.00. We have already collected $90,000.00.

The carpet for the nave of the new Church and St. Francis

Xavier Chapel will cost $40,000.00.

Cabinets on each side of the Baptismal Font: the Ambry

which contains the Holy Oils for Baptism, etc., and the other

is for a historical showcase. The cost is $1500.00

The pews are made of stained red oak. From the companies

who submitted bids, we chose the most reputable company

with a proven record of excellent quality and service. Their

bid was the most reasonable as well - $385.00 a seat.

The twelve dedication candles in the nave of the new church.

The design was taken from an image of a ‘cross pattee’ found

on our 1912 church bell. The design was modified to depict

the whole Paschal Mystery of Jesus Christ, namely his death

and resurrection. The cost of each is $2500.00.

Series of Articles on ‘The New St. Francis Xavier Church Building’ -

Designed to be a Sign of Who We Are

By Father Larry V. Pederson

The Bell as a Sign of Who We Are as a People of God

(Series Continued)

The church bell, made by Amedee Bollee Foundry in Le Mans,

France, was placed in the first Roman Catholic Church (built in

1909) in Camrose (known then as Sparling). The bell was blessed

and installed by Bishop Emile Legal on October 27th, 1912. All

writings and symbols are of French origin as the diocese at the

time was a French diocese, namely, St. Albert. It is significant that

the bell was made in France because many of the Oblates of Mary

Immaculate who were the first priests and brothers to evangelize

Western Canada came from France. The insignia of the Oblates of

Mary Immaculate is embossed on the church bell which is in

memory of Father Rene Remas, an Oblate priest. Some priests of

the Oblates of Mary Immaculate became Bishops of the Diocese of

St. Albert. Vital Justin Grandin, whose home was Le Mans, France,

was bishop from September 22nd, 1871 to June 3rd, 1902. He

snowshoed some 25,000 miles during his ministry. The sound of

St. Francis Xavier church bell brings us back into the past when he

heard the horn of the ship to hurry on board at the dock at Le Ha-

vre signaling the departure for Canada (Indian Bishop of the West,

Pgs. 9, 51, 52) Emile Legal was the next bishop of St. Albert (June

3rd, 1902) and the first Archbishop of Edmonton (November 30th,

1902 to March 20th, 1920). A few other names come to mind.

Fathers Emile Petitot, Zephryin Gascon, Albert Lacombe, Hypolyte

Leduc, Fathers Andre, Bourgine, Blanchet, Dupuis, Schollen, Lizee,

Vegreville, Dauphin, Portier, Tissot, Andre, Lestanc, Merer and

Brothers Lerichea and Bowes.

The details of the images and printing on this bell are magnifi-

cent. It weighs about 2,200 pounds and is made of bronze. This

bell is placed above the main entry of the new church.

This bell is a symbol of being called by God, gathering for sa-

cred time in a sacred space for sacred meaning. It is real, histori-

cally meaningful to our faith community and the Archdiocese of

Edmonton. It is visible to the outside and inside of the building.

The sound of the bell makes an announcement to the whole com-

munity, echoes our past history in its shape, design and sound.

The sound is a sign of hospitality and a summons to come togeth-

er into the sacred present and to be attentive to the present mo-

ment. It affirms the principles of authenticity, observation of sa-

cred time (especially the Day of the Lord) and represents a variety

of human expressions of change, history, observation and celebra-

tion. Its sound is certainly an invitation for us to change as do

many of the designs of the exterior building. To be continued….
