From Monsignor Ron …

If we wish to achieve our potential and if we wish to live successful lives there is only one way -- we need to stay close to Jesus. In today's gospel reading, Jesus says he is going to reveal things that until now have remained hidden. As well, he says it will be easier for children to accept these things than the learned and the clever. Instead of learned and clever a good substitute would be materialistic and self-centered. What Jesus is referring to is the need to have an awareness of the kingdom of God present among us. He asks us to be sensitive to it and to be open to the challenges it presents. Many young people and children recognize this and are inspired to become enthusiastic witnesses to God's love. We see this often in the very young as they prepare for Confirmation and First Holy Communion. They are very aware of the presence of God and they really do work to become his friends.

Jesus also urges his followers to shoulder the yoke; this was a wooden frame for carrying heavy loads. He encourages his followers to learn from him. I would suggest he is warning us that there are difficult issues which prevent the kingdom of God being realized. Jesus urges us not to shirk them. When we address them, we will find our burden is lightened and there is rest for our spirits. I wonder if Jesus is referring to those fears which we rarely discuss but which lurk in our subconscious and trouble us?

The beautiful thing is that Jesus offers to free all people from these burdens. He promises his presence and support. The rest that the Lord promises is love, healing and peace with God. I would like to suggest that a relationship with God changes meaningless, wearisome toil into spiritual

productivity and purpose. So many religions and faiths portray God as an overbearing, vengeful God that needs to be appeased. Yet the reality is our God is a God of mercy, compassion and love.

By way of conclusion, coming to Jesus should not be misunderstood. Jesus is not offering us a trouble-free life or an exemption from life's burdens. He came to preach Good News, not a fairytale. What Jesus does promise is his friendship, and his company and support in all that we experience in life. With his help, all will be well.

God is full of mercy and compassion and a great comfort in times of sorrow and distress. God is full of love and the guiding beacon to us in all the circumstances of life. There is a great capacity for goodness in each one of us, provided we accept the invitation to build up our lives with Christ as our model.

Reflection for the Week You and I are part of the mission of the Church. As Pope Pius XII said many years ago, by baptism, we do not simply belong to the Church, we are the Church. Our practical level, we go to places where priests don't go. We speak with people who will never speak with the priest. We encounter people who will never see a missionary. We are the only personal experience of a Catholic many will ever know. Do we take the significance of that fact seriously? Each of us is here not because we had a vision or a visit from an angel, but because some human being cared enough to share the faith with us. Are we willing to do the same? Do we ever share our faith or invite one person to Church and to prayer?

Expression of Gratitude from

the St Vincent DePaul Society We would like to express our thanks to the parishioners of St Andrew the Apostle Parish for their wonderful generosity in helping to care for those in need in this very difficult time. As usual, you have risen to the occasion. Your gifts of food and blankets were far above our expectations and much appreciated by us and the people to whom we minister.

PARISH PLANNED GIVING AND YOU The financial well-being of every parish community is dependent on the support given by members of the parish family. In this year when there is extensive development taking place in our parish community your support and generosity is needed.

If you have not yet collected your planned giving envelopes, please do so this weekend. If you are not yet a planned giving participant in our parish community, you are encouraged to become involved. You may do this either by parish envelopes, credit card or direct debit. As well, as we have been mentioning, you may do this online for the first and second collections as well as for the Catholic Foundation. Details can be found in this Parish Bulletin or on our webpage.

50th Anniversary Reflections While I would have liked to celebrate my 50 years as a priest with family, with my Parish family and with my friends, the present restrictions due to the current coronavirus make that impractical at this time. However, I would like to share some thoughts or reflections with you who have been part of my journey for over thirty years. Gerald Hughes wrote a book called “God of Surprises.” I like the title and I think it is very appropriate to the lives of many of us, including myself. I entered the seminary because I knew I needed to sort out whether or not I had a vocation to the priesthood. I joined the Society of St Columban because of the appeal of working in the missions towards which I felt called. After getting ordained, due to some unforeseen circumstances, I ended up working in the Archdiocese of Sydney in the parish of Ryde. I was invited to consider becoming a priest of the Archdiocese of Sydney. It is certainly surprising that 50 years have passed and they have been an incredible 50 years, a life I could not have imagined for myself at the beginning as the world and the church have changed so much in that time. As well, the wonderful range of experiences I have had is something I would not have liked to have missed. When you add to that the people I have journeyed with who have been such a gift, being with me, supporting me and challenging me. One thing is certain, and it is that I have no regrets. While every life has its ups and downs, it has been overall a fabulous journey. If I had to do it all over again I would because I cannot imagine a different life for me. I am extremely grateful for the opportunity and the grace to be a priest. I am grateful for the support of family, particularly the example of my parents and the ongoing support of my brothers. I am grateful to the Columban family for the formation and understanding of priesthood they offered. Their vision of Church and priesthood was very appropriate for the time and for this time. I am grateful to those I have walked with and ministered to and been ministered to over the years in various parishes. Obviously this is very true of Marayong. I am grateful for the experience of different types of ministry throughout the years. One lesson I learned from my first parish priest is basic and important – you cannot please all the people all the time. You will not be liked or appreciated by all people ever. You will suffer at times. Simply do your best, be consistent and be true to God and true to self. What have I learnt? There are a number of life lessons l have taken on board. Something I once read goes like this and I think it is a very accurate summary of life. Life is about change. We sometimes think we are going to change the world. Certainly, life is about change, but neither anything nor anyone will change except me and only if I engage in the process of living. As we live through

each day, we can have all the wonderful plans in the world, but it is important to take each day as it comes and adjust as necessary. The reality is that constant adjustment is necessary every day.

We need to always remember that the goal of ministry is actually not about results, but it is about fidelity to the mission we are called to engage in and all we have to do is, in every moment, to do the best we can. The results are always up to the work of the Holy Spirit and the receptiveness of people. We are all on the same journey which means I have something to offer but also every person I encounter has something to offer and the whole parish community has something to offer. So it is a matter of walking together at all times. In every circumstance it is important to try to find the most loving response to every person and in every situation. We are walking with people as one of them. We need an openness to the Holy Spirit each and every day and to realise the most important thing we can do for people is to be present to them and with them and not see ourselves simply as a sacramental facilitator or a fixer. Of course, in this we fail and fail often, but what is important is to learn from these events.

As I said before it is finding God in work and in people and being open to learn from every person. The reality is that when I work in a parish this is not my church nor my kingdom, but it is our church and our parish community. The reality is the priest is a newcomer to the community and when he leaves that community will continue to evolve and develop. This is a good reminder. We keep coming back to the point of accepting the gift of every person.

We are always engaged in a work of the Holy Spirit and the results will come in his time. Our mission is simply to plant seeds and to witness to Jesus Christ. We need to remember that God is always in control and we simply have to do the best we can.

No comment or reflection on the Christian life can be made without reference to prayer and a personal relationship with God as well as a recognition of our total dependence on him. We need to accept that we have a daily need to be converted anew. Prayer is the first and last condition for conversion, for spiritual progress and for holiness of life. We can pray our Masses, our Divine Office and other spiritual exercises, but we also need a very personal relationship with our God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. This relationship to each person of the Trinity has a place in every aspect of daily life and is to be nourished and activated often during each day. I personally love the idea of minute vacations of prayer a number of times during the day.

Thank you one and all for all you have given to me and by this I mean the support and encouragement as well as the challenges and difficulties, for all are important in our journeying and growth. I hope these will continue but maybe with less challenges and difficulties. Please continue to pray for me as I will continue to pray for you. May the God of Surprises continue to be active in all our lives.

UPDATES ON ATTENDANCE AT LITURGICAL CELEBRATIONS DUE TO CORONAVIRUS:

As we continue to navigate the changes to restrictions bearing in mind we must adhere to the guidelines authorised by NSW Health, conscious that we as a community have a responsibility for the health of each other and for the broader community.

DISPENSATION

As advised in Ad Clerum (5/20) Catholics from the Diocese of Parramatta are from 20 March 2020 dispensed from their Sunday Mass obligation until further notice (Canon 1248 §2 and Catechism 2181.) There is no change to this dispensation at this stage.

CONTACT DETAILS

Places of worship must record the contact details of people attending a religious service.

If attending as a family group from the same household, one adult contact name and number or email is sufficient.

This applies to Masses, weddings, funerals, memorial services, rosary groups, and all other events held at the parish.

Masses

Public Masses are permitted. Capacity of the Mass must not exceed one person per 4 square metre of space (excluding people assisting with the service).

In calculating the space available for each person on any premises the following areas are to be included in the calculations. If the size of the premises is not more than 200 square metres of floor space, the entire premises. If the size of the premises is more than 200 square metres of floor space, only those areas that are open to the public can be used. There is no upper limit on the number of people that can attend, provided the 4 square metres are observed.

1.5 metres physical distance should be kept between people in the Church. However, members of the same household may sit together.

At St Andrew the Apostle Parish, Marayong, the internal church floor space is 800 square metres. This means that under the new guidelines, 200 people may attend Mass at any one time, provided adequate social distancing is observed. Family groups may sit together and are to observe a 1.5 metre distance between other family groups and/or individuals.

Outdoor spaces can be used in the aforementioned space calculations provided the space is used during Mass. Parishes which can accommodate people outdoors during a Mass, in addition to the internal church space, must continue to adhere to the 1.5 metres physical distance per person.

For Weekday Mass from July 1 & Sunday Liturgies from July 5

1. The number of people admitted into the Church will be limited by the number we can safely accommodate with appropriate social distancing, and this will be through the main door only (via the piazza).

2. All people entering the Church need to sign on with their full name and phone number after using the hand sanitiser provided.

3. You are asked to be at the Church at least 15 minutes before the commencement of Mass. The gate and doors of the Church will be closed when full / 5 minutes before Mass commences.

3A. For those coming to Weekday Mass, please be aware of the difficulty that happens with students being dropped off to school. So please allow plenty of time.

4. Parishioners are to follow the directions of ushers and sit only in the seats that are designated for sitting by a yellow dot. Members of the same household may be seated together.

5. The rules about cleaning the areas that are used still exists and so we ask parishioners to use the disinfectant and wipes to clean the area where they were seated.

F IRST R ECEPTION OF SACRAMENTS IN 2020

The present plan we are looking at is to have a Mass celebrating First Holy Communion for the candidates who have been prepared. As regards the Sacrament of Confirmation, it is planned that this will take place if possible in the 4th term of this year. This may require a more limited preparation program and a program supported by the Primary School, Secondary School as required, and our catechists. Bishop Vincent has given permission for all Parish Priests to celebrate the sacrament this year.

The Sacrament of Reconciliation for students in year 2 and above will take place in the first term of 2021. The plan for 2021 will be to have First Holy Communion in term 2 and Confirmation in term 3.

F A I T H F OR M AT I ON

Reflection and Study of the Bible: This program has two sessions to run, thy will be held on Thursday 23rd and 30th July at 7:00pm in the Fr Byrne Centre and will be facilitated by Fr Flor, Fr Luis & Joy Kakodkar.

‘This study provides the easiest way to understand the Bible. Unlocking the Mystery of the Bible makes the complex simple. It helps you uncover the story woven throughout Scripture, so that you can get the “big picture” of the Bible and understand what it’s all about. The Bible is a story about the Father’s unfailing love for you, a love that you are now called to share with others.’

Visitation to the Church: The front corner door of the Church (near the Piety store) will be a means of entering the Church. It is necessary that you use hand sanitiser and record time along with your name and phone number upon entering the Church. We would also ask that you do not touch statues, the tabernacle, paintings, or any other religious object in the church.

Sisters and Brothers, let us pray for the needs of our world, especially the needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples during this challenging time.

We pray for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples. That all will recognize the Creator Spirit in their culture and the cultures of all newcomers which will allow all Australians to live fully, grow strong and be proud of their heritage.

ABORIGINES AND TORRES STRAIT ISLANDERS The 5th of July, is Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Sunday – the theme for this year is “Together in the spirit” It is a day to celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders in our community as well as within the church as a whole. As St Pope John Paul II said in his speech to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders in Alice Springs in 1986, “I want to tell you right away how much the Church esteems and loves you…Your culture, which shows the lasting genius and dignity of your race, must not be allowed to disappear…the Church herself in Australia will not be fully the Church that Jesus wants her to be until you have made your contribution to her life and until that contribution has been joyfully received by others.”

During the week prayers have been requested for ………………………………………………………...…………
