This photo and rendering of the “new” Lower School building on the Park Tudor campus was published in the 50th anniversary Alumni Issue of Park School’s “The Red and Black” newspaper in the late 1960s (the issue is undated). The accompanying caption reads, “In sketch, photograph or actual viewing, the Park School campus at Lilly Orchard is a beautiful site to behold. The Lower School building, pictured, now houses all grade levels of Park. The Middle and Upper School build-ing is scheduled to be completed by January, 1970.” Park moved to the campus in 1965.

In another article in the publication, student Kevin Rees ’72 wrote, “Park is still an excellent school, and there is nothing wrong with or deficient in the new campus. Yet, I believe it is the uncomfortable newness, the lack of being ‘broken in’ that militates against the attitude of the students to regard it as a ‘second home.’

“It is our duty, therefore, to ‘break in’ the new campus, to kick a hole in a step, or to carve our initials in a tree, to make the campus bearable for the students of the future.”

The beginning of the 2013-2014 academic year brings with it the exciting launch of the process to create the next generation of Park Tudor’s strategic plan: PT 2020.

As I have shared with you in the past few issues of this magazine, last year the school made great progress on the develop-ment of a campus master plan. In May of this year, the Board of Directors approved the outline of the master plan as a “plan in process.”

This year’s strategic planning process will align with the evolving campus master plan. In fact, the two plans work hand-in-hand. As we move forward with these pro-cesses, I think it is important to distinguish between master and strategic planning. It is helpful to think of the master plan as a flex-ible framework about facilities and future physical change to the campus: where future buildings should be placed and how current structures will evolve.

In contrast, the strategic planning phase is an opportunity to reflect on every-thing from mission to core values to the strategic long-term vision for the school; in the final analysis, we will develop pri-orities and agree on fundamental principles and the overall vision of the school. We will touch base with the campus master plan throughout this year, ensuring align-ment consistent with our evolving vision.

As part of the process, a Strategic Planning Steering Committee composed of alumni, faculty, board members and parents has been created as a subcommit-tee of the Board’s Long-Range Planning Committee. The Steering Committee has hired Ian Symmonds and Associates, a leading strategy firm for schools, colleges, universities and non-profits, to consult on the process.

Symmonds says, “At the end of the day, strategic planning is a critical, ongo-ing process that seeks to find the intersec-tion between internal mission and external

reality. We know that education is going through an inflection point right now, just as major industries did a decade or so ago. With so much changing in our world, it becomes even more critical that Park Tudor reflect on its strategic direction with purpose and clarity. It is an exciting time to plan.”

The Steering Committee has identified three strategic areas of focus:

Teaching and LearningBuilding on its strong foundation, Park

Tudor aspires to create a dynamic, collab-orative academic program that develops timeless skills (critical inquiry and effec-tive communication) but also encourages curiosity, adaptive thinking, passion and direction.

Citizenship and CommunityPark Tudor aspires to develop gradu-

ates who have the tools and competencies to engage the global, multicultural world and who are cross-culturally competent.This includes understanding self, developing empathy toward others, and having the skills to engage concepts and individuals from dif-ferent backgrounds and perspectives.

Sustainability and StewardshipPark Tudor aspires to become strong

and self-sustaining, able to withstand and adjust effectively to internal and external changes over a long period of time. We believe academic relevance, financial health, faculty and student wellness, and environmental responsibility each are required for the school’s long-term sus-tainability.

The Steering Committee has started the year by kicking off a series of learn-ing sessions with faculty, students, alumni, parents, board members and community thought leaders to discuss these three areas of focus. The sessions are designed to gather community feedback on the foun-dational aspects of our school, which in turn will help the committee to determine priorities for the strategic plan. To date, more than 650 community representatives have participated in the sessions.

Board and Steering Committee mem-ber Courtney Schwab says, “The response and engagement we have received from the Park Tudor community has been very exciting. When we designed our strategic planning process, our primary objective was to be as inclusive as possible. Our hope was to get input from all of Park Tudor's many stakeholders—parents and alumni, teachers and students, faculty and staff, and other members of the commu-nity. Quite frankly, the reaction has been extraordinary.”

As we continue this dialogue, we will begin to gather feedback and create a lens through which to view change, develop priorities and generate action steps moving forward. Our hope is to have a working draft of our strategic plan early in 2014, which we will share with the community; our goal is to have a board-approved plan by the end of this academic year.

Once the year-long strategic planning process is complete, we will weave the campus master plan into this framework, defining the school community’s vision for Park Tudor’s future and finalizing a com-prehensive overall plan for our school as we head toward 2020.

Campus now linked to head of school’s residence

Park Tudor now has a beautiful new walkway linking the head of school’s resi-dence to the campus, thanks to a gift from Steve Cagle ’71. The head of school’s house sits on Pennridge Drive, directly to the west of the Upper School building. However, it was hidden by a wooded area that separated it from the rest of the campus. Head of School Matthew Miller and his wife, Mia, host many school events at the house each year and accessibility was difficult, espe-cially for the mobility-impaired. Cagle’s gift resulted in a landscaped pathway that leads from the patio behind

the Wood Room to the residence. Features include a lighted sidewalk, a small amphi-theatre that can be used for outdoor class-room sessions, and a separate walkway that provides stair-free access for food-service carts and wheelchairs. Cagle says, “It was important to make a statement that was attractive and func-tional, to allow people to access the cam-pus from that western edge and to connect the head of school’s house to the campus.” The project will be capped by con-struction of a wrought-iron gate and arch supported by limestone columns, which will be named “Cagle Gate.” It is expected to be completed in the spring of 2014. Head of School Matthew Miller says that once the project is completed, fresh-men and senior classes will walk through Cagle Gate at the start and completion of their Upper School careers.

Middle School introduces iPad program

Park Tudor Middle School students are following in the footsteps of their ground-breaking Lower School counterparts by using iPads in their classrooms this year. The Middle School kicked off its iPad pro-gram at the start of the school year after the Lower School’s successful introduction last year. “iPads are ideal for Middle School stu-dents in many ways,” says Middle School Director Shants N. Hart. “This is a time when they are developing their note-taking and organization skills, and iPads offer an effective way to compile and centralize in-formation, as well as to access class pages and learning resources with a single device.” Seventh-grader Henry Stewart bears out Hart’s observations. He says that using an iPad in his classes this year has helped him to stay organized. “It’s not as hard to keep track of things,” he says. “In the be-ginning of the year I was leaning more to-wards paper, but the iPad makes it so much easier to keep things in one place.” Middle School science teachers Eli Salatich, Sue Taylor and Mary Zajac spent part of their summer break creating sci-

ence textbooks customized to Park Tudor’s program. The textbooks were designed in ebook format; students download the ebooks onto their iPads and annotate them online. All Middle School math and sci-ence textbooks now are online. Taylor says, “It’s better than a paper textbook. Students can make highlights, find definitions of terms, and link to other resources. The iPad offers a lot more op-tions.” She also notes that the Middle School already has noticed a reduction in paper and copier usage, just as the Lower School did last year.

English teacher Jane Sidey is using the iPad to teach “Romeo & Juliet,” using film and audio clips in conjunction with Shake-speare’s written text. “I’m able to give the kids a visual as well as an audio experience. I’ve noticed that they seem to understand it better,” she says. Head of Academic Technology Doug Stotts says the iPads “give the students op-tions for how they learn best. Kids have grown up with smartphones, so this is not new to them. Some still prefer to take notes with paper and pencil, and we think that’s great. It’s all about how they learn best.”

The Park Tudor Technology Commit-tee recommended implementation of iPad programs as part of the technology plan it created two years ago. Surveys of parents, teachers and students determined that there was strong support. Teachers noted the benefits of reduced dependence on laptops, allowing students to work both individu-ally and collaboratively without concerns about availability. Among students, 84% said they prefer to use their own devices instead of shared laptops for classwork. The Middle School program is slightly different from the Lower School program because of the students’ age and curricular requirements. All Middle School families purchase the iPads, which enables students to use them both at home and at school. In

the Lower School, iPads are owned by the school and are available for classroom use. “One of Park Tudor's goals is to help students learn to leverage technology in a skillful and discriminating way,” says Peter Kraft, Associate Head of School for Academic Affairs. “The iPad program is another method to help students develop essential media and digital literacies.” Along with the iPads come lessons in appropriate usage. “One important goal is to begin developing good ‘digital citizen-ship’ among our students," said Hart. Stu-dents sign an acceptable-use policy and discuss appropriate usage of the devices at school and at home. Parents also are re-ceiving guidance and recommendations for developing a home-usage contract.

Global Online Academy classes underway

Three Upper School students are taking online classes this semester in Park Tudor's inaugural year as a member of the Global Online Academy (GOA), a network of 33 leading independent schools worldwide that are sharing resources to provide high-quality online courses.

At the 2012 National Association of Independent Schools Conference, Micro-soft founder Bill Gates highlighted the ef-forts of the GOA, saying “One of the great pieces of work in the area of online educa-tion is being done by a group of indepen-dent schools and it’s called the Global On-line Academy... you gain this unbelievable ability to bring diversity into those class-room discussions... It’s efforts like that that are really going to point the way.” Head of School Dr. Matthew Miller says, “Online learning encourages deep critical thinking, since students have time to think through their responses–not just the quickest hand to go up gets heard. GOA also provides access to a wider range of courses and provides a unique opportunity for students to meet and work with peers from around the world.” Alayna Weiss, a junior who is taking an online class in Global Health, agrees. Her classmates include a Swedish student who attends an American school in Japan, and another who studied in Senegal. They’re “interesting people who know what they’re talking about,” she says, adding that “more and more, business requires you to interact with people located everywhere.” Senior Shelby Brown is taking “9/11 in a Global Context,” a course not offered at Park Tudor that is of particular interest to her. “I've been interested in national secu-rity and counterintelligence, and this was a chance to learn more about what motivates terrorists,” she says.

Legacy Initiative publishes sixth book

The Park Tudor Legacy Initiative history project is celebrating the publication of the sixth volume in its “Words of War” anthology. “Wartime Memories: North & South of the Mason-Dixon Line” features Civil War memories from 20 Union and Confederate soldiers. Legacy Initiative Project Director Kathryn Lerch says, “The combatants featured in this volume represent dif-ferent ethnic, economic, religious and educational backgrounds; they came from dif-ferent geographic regions, and they filled all the ranks, as well as field and staff.” Barbie Burdick of Carmel, California offered her review: “What a treasure, with so much first-hand historical informa-tion….Horstmann's detailed description of action on the battlefield is like a Ken Burns piece. You can hear the cannon fire in your mind.” The celebratory book-signing event, which is open to the public, takes place Tuesday, November 12 at 7:15 p.m. in Park Tudor’s Wood Room. Additional book-signing events are being scheduled at the Indiana History Center and Barnes and Noble stores in the Indiana-polis area; stay tuned for dates and locations. For Michaela Tinkey, a junior taking “Global Voices: Poetry Writing,” the GOA has enabled her to take a creative-writing course that wouldn’t fit in to her regular school day. “I know that assignments are always going to be due on a particular day, so I can plan ahead even though I don’t have a specific block of time allotted to the course in my schedule,” she says. A chat with our new Director of Diversity & Inclusion

Dr. John Daves joined the faculty of Park Tudor this year as Director of Diversity & Inclusion and Upper School English teacher. A native of Princeton, New Jersey, he pre-viously taught English at Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire, where he created the Exeter Diversity Institute. The summer program is designed to assist Eng-lish and history teachers in the develop-ment of curriculum and techniques to teach race, class and gender issues in American literature and history. Daves also taught at Friends' Central School in Pennsylvania, where he received a fellowship to attend the Bread Loaf School of English at Middlebury College, a teaching assistantship honor from the Uni-versity of Maryland, and a visiting assistant position from Dickinson College. He earned his undergraduate degree from Susquehanna University and an M.A.T. in English from Colgate Univer-sity before completing a Ph.D. in American studies at the University of Maryland. At Park Tudor, in addition to teach-ing AP English III and sophomore English classes, Daves serves as chair of the fac-ulty Diversity Committee. The committee currently is reviewing curricula and how schools are incorporating diversity into the fabric of their curricula. He also is co-chair of the Citizenship and Community Sub-committee of the school’s Strategic Plan-ning Committee, and next year will add the role of English Department chair to his re-sponsibilities.

Q: What are your goals as Park Tudor’s new Director of Diversity & Inclusion?

A: My first year at Park Tudor is about helping faculty and students understand the role diversity plays in their lives through conversation, literature, programs and stra-tegic planning. A senior recently asked me, “Why should I care about diversity?” I asked him if he was thinking about attending an Ivy League school. “Why might they be interested that you come from Indiana? I hear you talking about geographic diversity,” I said. His eyes lit up. “What might their im-pression be of you and the area?” I asked. He said he thought their impressions of Indiana might not include anything but the Indianapolis 500 and other assump-tions about the Midwest. We continued our conversation, dis-cussing these perceptions and assumptions in further detail and their potential impact. After our conversation, he said, “I just learned more about diversity in 20 minutes than I did in my entire educational career.” This story is an example of my role: I have to figure out where students are, and how being aware of diversity issues will help them develop the intellectual and per-sonal agility to create their own path to en-able them to grapple with a more complex, interconnected world.

Q: People define diversity in different ways. How do you define it in connection with your role as Director of Diversity & Inclusion?

A: I think most people assume that diver-sity deals with black and white power dy-namics throughout history, or promoting multiculturalism and making sure we treat

people well, whether they’re Black, Asian, Latino, etc. While those are important aspects of diversity, the primary focus of my role is to help faculty and students understand the various layers of diversity that they’re of-ten not aware of: geographic; social class; gender roles; recognizing cultures of pow-er, both within and beyond the gates of Park Tudor; and helping kids understand their own social identity and development during their time at PT and as they move on into adulthood. I recently read an email from a parent who wrote, “I’m excited to see what you are going to do at Park Tudor.” That made me keenly aware of the spo-ken and unspoken expectations of my ar-rival. My contributions in terms of program and curricular ideas have to be organic, and have to come from a place where the com-munity is in order to have a relevant and

lasting impact on the role diversity can play in Park Tudor’s growth as it engages India-napolis and the world.

Q: How did you develop the concept for the Exeter Diversity Institute?

A: Exeter has a student-centered approach to teaching that focuses on students gen-erating the focus of the conversation. The teacher serves as facilitator of their learn-ing experience. For the Diversity Institute I wanted to create a similar experience for teachers, where they could learn about diversity issues through the discussion of texts. When I arrived at Park Tudor, I built upon what I learned at Exeter by becoming a facilitator, a coach or a mentor, depending on the social situation.

Students appointed to top positions at International Model UN

For the first time in the history of Park Tudor’s participation at The International Model UN (THIMUN) Conference in The Hague, Netherlands, three Park Tu-dor students have been selected for special positions. Park Tudor is one of only three schools in the world that has been given three special position assignments at THI-MUN 2014, and is one of only nine U.S. schools invited to participate in the confer-ence. This year, Park Tudor will represent the nation of Iraq at the conference, which takes place in January. Roderick Bowlby ’14 will serve in a student officer capacity as deputy chair of the Third Committee of the General As-sembly (social, humanitarian & cultural). He will help run a committee comprised of about 200 students from all over the world. Bowlby’s selection was based upon special application. The deputy chair roles are of-fered to juniors with the view to grooming those chosen for secretary, chair, or presi-dent positions in 2015. While student offi-cers come from 20 countries, Bowlby is the only student from the United States chosen to serve as a student officer. Dan Fu ’14 will serve as one of 27 students on the Nuclear Security Sum-

mit, a special committee formed for 2014 only to emulate the global security summit President Obama will attend at The Hague in March. His position on this summit is Secretary General of the UN. Fu will be involved in creating a communique, rather than creating resolutions, as the regular committees do. Park Tudor Model UN Advisor Peter Smith says, “He will no doubt meet some very senior international figures who work in this field of nuclear security.”

Samone Blair ’14 will serve as a judge on the International Court of Justice (ICJ) with a group 32 students. She will work with in-dependent lawyers who do not represent a country. Blair will become familiar with the rules of the ICJ, as well as research the two actual cases currently before the ICJ. In addition, students Mattie Shepard ’14 and Meredith Mannix ’14 have been appointed press corps delegates for the conference, Shepard for text editing and Mannix for photography.

Faculty explore diversity issues

• Upper School teachers Sven Dubie, Pam Fischer and Kim Pulfer attended the five-day Exeter Diversity Institute at Phillips Exeter Academy in June. Created and led by Park Tudor's new Director of Diversity and Inclusion and Upper School English teacher Dr. John Daves, the Institute was designed for history and English teachers from public and private schools to explore the role social-identity issues play in the minds and lives of their students. Using a wide variety of texts, films and intensive classroom discussions, the 25 conference participants deepened their understanding of themselves as English and history teachers of students from divergent backgrounds. They also discussed new ideas for curriculum development that will prepare young people to meet the demands of an ever more diverse and globally interconnected world.

• Fourth-grade math teacher Chris Holobek attended the week-long National Associa-tion of Independent Schools Diversity Leadership Institute in Alexandria, Virginia this summer. He describes it as an “intense week of leaning into discomfort, collabo-rating with new colleagues, and having the opportunity to share and learn how ele-ments of a diverse school look.” Read Holobek’s article on the Exploring Education blog on the Park Tudor website.

National Merit awards

Ten members—approximately 10 per-cent—of the Park Tudor Class of 2014 have been named semifinalists in the 2014 National Merit Scholarship Program. These academically talented seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competi-tion for some 8,000 National Merit Schol-arships worth about $35 million that will be offered next spring. Congratulations to Amy Cohn, Dan Fu, Chris Gregory, Chris Hsu, Alexandra Lombardo, Victoria Longe, Alexa Petruc-ciani, Michael Xu, Jason Zhao and Mia Zhao. In addition, seniors Samone Blair, Danielle Johnson and Victoria Longe have been named semifinalists in the National Achievement Scholarship Program, initi-ated in 1964 to recognize academically promising black students. The seniors will continue in the competition for ap-proximately 800 Achievement Scholarship awards worth about $2.5 million. Thirteen seniors have been named as Commended Students by the National Merit Scholarship Program. They are Julia Amstutz, Samone Blair, Taylor Byxbee, Andrew Foster, Austin Honigford, Thomas Klimek, Katelynn Kyker, Jack McCarter, Charles Osborne, Leah Schuckit, A.J. Stautz, Linda Tauscher and Walter Winslow.

Student honors

• A research paper senior Dan Fu wrote for his AP U.S. History course, “Ameri-can Foreign Policy Decisions and the 1979 Iranian Revolution,” has been accepted for publication in the Fall 2013 issue of “The Concord Review.” The Review is the only quarterly journal in the world to publish the academic work of secondary students. It features exemplary history essays by high-school students.

• Dan Fu ’14, Robert Gerdisch ’15, Cath-erine Mytelka ’13, Nathan Mytelka ’15, Laurel Fink ’15, John Havlik ’15 and Thien Meensuk ’14 competed in the American Computer Science League All-Stars com-petition in June. The three-person team of Dan Fu and Catherine and Nathan Mytelka placed fourth in its division, which included

28 schools from 17 states. Nathan Mytelka earned a perfect score on the short-answer portion of the contest.

• Park Tudor took third place at the Aca-demic Spell Bowl Invitational at Lutheran High School on October 1. Spell Bowl team members were Emily Janin ’14, Jes-sica Newton ’14, Mattie Shepard ’14 and DeForest Williamson ’14. The team com-peted in the regional competition on Octo-ber 14.

Focus on faculty

• Upper School social studies teacher and Legacy Initiative Director Kathryn Lerch, along with recently retired Upper School English teacher Dr. Diane Hamstra, trav-eled to Washington, D.C. in July to deliver more than 50 oral history interviews con-ducted by Park Tudor students to the direc-tor of the Veterans History Project at the Li-brary of Congress, Bob Patrick. Park Tudor students have collected more than 300 oral histories from veterans that are archived at the Library of Congress.

• Junior Kindergarten teacher Molly Mur-phy has received a master's degree in edu-cation with a focus in early childhood edu-cation from Ball State University. Murphy has taught young children at Park Tudor since 1997 and helped develop the Spanish curriculum for the Hilbert Early Education Center. She holds a B.A. degree in Spanish and English from Indiana University, with study at the Universidad de Granada. She is past president of the Indiana Network for Early Language Learning and has ex-tensive experience as a translator and tutor.

• Assistant Director of Fine Arts and Up-per School graphic design and photogra-phy teacher Heather Teets has received her master’s degree in art education from Her-ron School of Art. She holds a bachelor of fine arts degree in photography and a bach-elor of art education from Herron School of Art/Indiana University.

• Upper School History teacher Jeff Johnson has passed the National Counselor Exami-nation administered by the National Board for Certified Counselors. Johnson is pursu-ing an M.S. degree in school counseling.

This fall Middle School students collected 418 pairs of shoes to send to Swaziland, Africa–more than doubling their initial goal of 200 pairs. In Swaziland, footwear is not common, but is needed for everyday tasks such as getting food and water, adequate health care, and going to school. Stu-dents from Crispus Attucks High School will travel to the African nation over Thanksgiving Break to distribute the shoes and to help educate teens about HIV/AIDS. The high schoolers will share pictures and videos from their trip with PT middle schoolers in January.

• Chinese Studies Program Director Dr. Caroline Lee-Thompson served on the or-ganizing committee for the September Chi-nese Teacher Workshop sponsored by Con-fucius Institute at IUPUI. The workshop’s goal was to provide resources for new and inexperienced Chinese-language teachers.

• Upper School Spanish teacher Francisco Hidalgo is one of 40 teachers worldwide who is creating teacher-training materi-als and leading online teacher courses for the International Baccalaureate program. He currently is working online with teachers in Malaysia.

Involved in our community

• Park Tudor faculty and students vol-unteered this summer at Horizons at St. Richard’s Episcopal School, a five-week program to help prevent summer learning loss among low-income students. Upper School social studies teacher Jeff Johnson volunteered as a counselor for the program. Student volunteers included Julia Amstutz ’14, Olivia Buroker ’15, James Dora ’14, Nicolas Hornedo ’15, Emily Janin ’14, Kate Kimbell ’15 and Sophie O’Neill ’14. Social Studies teacher Kim Pulfer also as-sisted the program, which was featured in an “Indianapolis Star” article on July 26.

• Abigail Boldt ’17 served on the spe-cial events committee of the Indianapolis Women's Fund GO Ahead & Play public art project. Joined by Riley Aquilano ’18, Shea Aquilano ’19 and Sophie Eskenazi ’18 as well as students from other area schools, the teens helped transform 20 pia-nos into interactive, playable pieces of art. The pianos were placed in various loca-tions in Indianapolis and Carmel in August in an effort to bring music to public spaces and make arts accessible to the community.

• Eighth-graders Anna Kelley, Alex Klimek, Sarah Maar and Natalie Long raised $850 to support the Teal Ribbon Ovarian Cancer Run/Walk on September 28. They walked in memory of Anna’s mother, Karla Kelley.

• Luke Brougher ’14 traveled to Romania for 17 days in July, volunteering at a shel-ter for abused women and children. Along with two of his former classmates from St. Richard’s School, he tutored local children, painted houses, helped on a farm and vis-ited Roma camps to learn about the culture of the Eastern European country. Luke says he gained valuable insights about himself and about the plight of others around the world.

• Asha Smith ’14 has been appointed leg-islative liaison for the teen group of Jack and Jill of America-Indianapolis chapter. Jack and Jill is a nationwide organization of African-American mothers and their families. The core of the philosophy is that every child, if given the proper guidance and opportunity, can be developed into a leader. Asha participated in the Biennial on the Hill Summit of America in September, which provided an opportunity for mem-bers to meet with elected officials to dis-cuss children’s issues, youth leadership and gun control.

• Clare Chandler ’16, Dominique Har-rington ’15, Allison Irwin ’15, Imani Kigamwa ’17 and Ravi Shah ’14 represent-ed Park Tudor at the Youth Philanthropy Initiatives Indiana/Indiana Grantmakers Alliance conference hosted by Park Tudor on July 17.

Honor Council adds mentoring program

When senior Neale Moore was a soph-omore, he realized how much he had de-pended on his older brother, Josh, who had graduated the preceding year. As a result, he proposed to the Upper School Honor Council a mentoring program that would pair an older student with an incoming freshman, helping to make the adjustment to Upper School more graceful. The Honor Council has now adopted the program as part of its existing mentor-ing program for ninth-graders. Over the summer, Honor Council members inter-viewed all incoming freshmen students to

learn about their interests and activities, then paired each one with an upper-level student with similar interests. The students are meeting before and after school this year.

Honor Council members met with freshmen in the shelter by Lauth Field to kick off their new mentoring program.

Fall athletic update: Boys tennis, girls soccer capture titles

BOyS TENNIS The No. 3-ranked boys tennis team once again made it to the state finals this fall, defeating Evansville Memorial 4-1 before falling to North Central, 3-2, in the state final match. No. 1 singles player Dan Rayl ’15 won all three of his matches dur-ing the state finals to remain undefeated at 30-0, becoming only the second player to win both a singles and doubles state title. (The other was Brandon Gill ’01.) The boys opened state tournament play with 5-0 sectional victories over both the Inter-national School and Pike. The team won its ninth consecutive Indiana Crossroads Conference champion-ship, besting the other seven teams with 30 points while conquering all five matches in the finals. The netters took second place in the Marion County Tournament, again los-ing a tough battle to rival North Central. Earlier in the season the Panthers won top honors at the Warsaw Invitational. They finished their season with a 20-5 record.

GIRLS SOCCER The Lady Panthers made their second trip in a row to the semi-state competition this year after sectional victories over Ben Davis and Monrovia and a regional cham-pionship, 2-0, over Tri-West. Earlier in the season the girls made a clean sweep of their

conference opponents, finishing with a per-fect 6-0 conference record. Going into the Marion County tournament the girls owned an impressive 8-3-2 record. In the County tournament they won their first two con-tests with victories over Lawrence Central and Decatur Central.

BOyS SOCCER The varsity team was 9-5-1 after a tough loss to Decatur Central in overtime during the second round of the County Tournament. Park Tudor won its tourney opener in impressive fashion, defeating Lawrence Central, 6-0. The boys finished by tying for second place in the conference, losing two close battles to Speedway and Cardinal Ritter. Park Tudor opened section-al play against Heritage Christian, but lost a 1-0 decision to the Eagles. If you’ve noticed the boys and girls soccer teams wearing green jerseys this season, your eyes haven’t been deceiving you. The girls team sported retro green Tu-dor Hall jerseys in its match against Speed-way. The boys wore the jerseys at each conference game in honor of Park Tudor’s girls-school predecessor.

CROSS COUNTRy The boys and girls teams each fin-ished in eighth place at sectionals, with Ryan Betz ’14, Jason Zhao ’14 and Jessica Palmer ’15 ranking as the top finishers for the Panthers. The trio advanced to region-als, where Betz finished 50th and Zhao 67th for the boys, and Palmer finished 71st for the girls. At the Indiana Crossroads Con-ference meet, the boys finished in second place and the girls took third. Earning All-

Conference honors were Palmer (second place), Zhao ’14 (ninth) and Nikhil Tewari ’15 (10th). The girls won the A-3A state preview meet at Terre Haute with eight teams participating. Palmer placed first and Sydney Allen ’15 followed in second. The boys were busy establishing personal re-cords at most meets. They placed eighth of 21 teams at the Brown County Invitational. Ryan Betz ’14 earned a third-place finish at the Yorktown Invitational.

VOLLEyBALL The girls were on a seven-game win-ning streak after impressive wins over Beech Grove and Indiana School for the Deaf. However, they came up short in the opening match of the County tournament, losing to a very talented Brebeuf team. The girls enjoyed a nice stretch of home games to finish the regular season before entering state tournament play.

GIRLS GOLF A small but determined group of five girls represented Park Tudor on the links this fall. New Head Coach Darren Thomas saw marked improvement in the girls over the course of the season. The team finished 11th in the Marion County tournament and placed sixth in the sectional. Isabel Frei-hofer ’15 advanced to the regional round of the state tournament in New Castle.

FOOTBALL Only 20 players dotted the roster at the beginning of the season, making for a very challenging task. Coach Orlando Lowry and his staff made the best of the situation given their small roster numbers. The boys of the gridiron stood 1-5 two-thirds of the way into the season, capturing their first of two victories with a 19-7 win over South Decatur. The players continued to show great determination and resolve with each passing week, winning their last regular-sea-son game over South Decatur, 33-0, heading into sectionals.

Coach of the year Congratulations to Girls Varsity La-crosse Coach Casey LeFevre, who was se-lected by the Park Tudor Booster Club as Coach of the Year for 2012-2013. During his first year at PT, the girls lacrosse team had a 14-2 record and won the Regional Championship in the IHSWLA league.

Athlete in the news Haley Hallenbeck ’15 was selected to the 2013 Under Armour All-American Midwest Lacrosse Team. Haley was the only player from Indiana selected to play for the team and competed at Towson Uni-versity July 5-7. Hallenbeck also was se-lected to 1st Team US Lacrosse All Ameri-can and played for Team Freedom in the 2013 All-American Showcase in Florida in July.

Visiting Artist series to feature noted photo-journalist

Pulitzer-Prize-winning photojournalist William Snyder will offer the final presen-tation in this year’s Visiting Artist Series on January 10, 2014. The series kicked off on September 20 with ceramicist Rachel Bleil and was followed by a visit from cya-notype artist Tasha Lewis on November 8. In addition to offering an artist talk and ex-hibition, each artist meets with Park Tudor art students in the classroom to share their work.

Snyder, a four-time Pulitzer Prize- winning photojournalist, is from Hender-son, KY, attended Evansville Day School and graduated from Rochester Institute of Technology with a B.S. degree in photog-raphy, summa cum laude. Snyder is chair of the Rochester Institute of Technology photojournalism program.

In the 15 years he was a photographer at “The Dallas Morning News,” Snyder covered the first democratic elections in Haiti and Romania; the explosion of the shuttle Challenger; the 1991 coup attempt in the Soviet Union; the reunification of Germany; health care in the U.S. federal prison system; AIDS orphans in Romania; AIDS in Uganda and Thailand; illegal im-

Fine Arts notes

• Upper School students performed the hit romantic comedy “Almost, Maine” on No-vember 9 and 10. Developed at the Cape Cod Theater Project in 2002, “Almost, Maine” has been produced by nearly 2,000 theater companies in the United States, making it one of the most frequently pro-duced plays of the past decade. • Jeremy Wu ’13, Victoria Xiao ’13, Ruben Schuckit ’14 and Nicholas Chun ’10 debuted their own quartet as accompany-ing musicians at the HART Theatre’s pre-sentation of Shakespeare’s “Taming of the Shrew” at White River State Park in down-town Indianapolis on August 10.

Over the past year, you all have risen to many occasions. Whether it was volunteering on behalf of the Park Tudor Parents’ Association or Booster Club, providing classroom support or participating in the Annual Fund, we have counted on you. The Annual Fund is a critical component of the school’s financial model, which can be most easily captured in numbers; but if you believe (as I do) that the Annual Fund reflects a deeper, more emotional investment in excellence, the results demonstrate an incredible endorsement of our mission. Annual Fund highlights for the 2012-13 school year include raising nearly $1.2 million, which includes gifts from 73 percent of our current families, steady growth in donations from alumni, and faculty and board support totaling 100 percent.

These results demonstrate a strong belief in the school’s mission of providing exceptional educators and extraordinary opportunities. This support has a deep history at Park Tudor, and it is affirming to see how donors recognize and celebrate our commitment to excellence.

I encourage you to read through this Annual Report, where you will find the names of more than 1,250 Park Tudor parents, alumni, faculty, grandparents and friends of the school who proudly supported the school through gifts to the Annual Fund, Endowment or other special projects in the 2012-13 year. Global guides: Teachers bring the world to Park Tudor

One evening last year, Margo McAlear was taking out the trash in her Zionsville neighborhood when she overheard a woman speaking a foreign language. Her ears perked up when she recog-nized it as Arabic, a language she’s familiar with because of her many trips to the Middle East in connection with her teaching. McAlear introduced herself to the woman, whose English was poor. She learned that her new neighbor was from Egypt, and that as a Coptic Christian she, along with her husband and son, recently had fled the country and applied for religious asylum in the U.S. This refugee family had moved to Indianapolis without any support system, and was struggling to get by. The woman’s hus-band had difficulty finding a job with his limited English skills, and the family had few transportation options in their suburban neighborhood, which they had chosen for its well-regarded public schools. Since meeting the family, McAlear, who teaches Upper School AP World History and World Civilizations II classes at Park Tudor, has tutored them in English and helped them navigate their unfa-miliar environment. “The experience has been amazing in what I have come to learn about immigrants and what they face,” says McAlear. Be-cause the family’s relatives remain in Egypt, “the modern tech-nology keeps them in a constant state of turmoil and anxiety and worry. They feel so helpless – it exacerbates the situation.” McAlear’s curiosity about the world and interest in fostering global connections had its start in the tiny Montana ranching town

of Red Lodge in the Beartooth Mountains, population 1500, where she grew up. “It was an insular existence, and I frequently found myself daydreaming about the world outside that small town,” she says. “The Cold War shaped my early awareness of the larger world. My dad spent numerous hours after work poring over bomb shelter plans, and my mother frequently wandered around musing about whether some Soviet mother was as worried as she was. On my end, I filled days worrying about how I was going to die, and thinking about how I would not even know the people who were going to kill me,” she remembers. “As I headed into my teen years, my mother hung a large, col-orful world map in my bedroom, and as the Vietnam war unfolded, we would read about an event, go find the place on that map, and

together, wonder about what the Vietnamese people would say about the same occurrence. There were not many answers, given the scarcity of information, but what had staying power were the questions, and the feeling of transporting myself into a world far away, visualizing through the eyes of others.” After marrying fellow teacher Mark Dewart (who teaches Up-per School biology at Park Tudor) the pair moved to New York to teach at a private school. “I taught a course in Cold War history, and realized that if I were to teach this course accurately, I needed to learn the views of people in the Soviet Union,” McAlear says. For three years she was tutored in Russian, and then in the mid-1980s traveled alone in the Soviet Union for three weeks (at times with Intourist guides), going to Moscow, Leningrad, Uz-bekistan, Georgia, Azerbaijan, and across Siberia on the Trans-Siberian railroad. “That trip taught me firsthand that people see events and ideas through a diverse array of lenses and from then on, it became my mission to bring those voices and accounts back to my students.” McAlear also has studied in Japan, China and India, and at Park Tudor has initiated student trips to Egypt, Jordan, China and Peru. She has made research trips to Israel, as well as to Syria, Iran and Jordan. During her first trip, when she spent two weeks visit-ing these last three countries, she hired a driver and translator to assist her in meeting and talking with people. The second time, she traveled to Syria, staying with a family she met during her initial trip. During her travels, she asks the people she meets, “If you could go on American TV and teach Americans three things about your history, what would you tell them?” McAlear takes their comments, along with excerpts she col-lects from local textbooks, and “coalesces these ideas into more manageable form” for use in the classroom. For example, she says, Iranian people “want us to know how they think of themselves as Persian, not Arab. In Syria, with the overlay of Roman, Biblical, Islamic and Ottoman history, they want us to understand how that affected their worldview.” “By meeting so many people and talking to people who hold so many different perspectives, I came away with valuable insights on how to manage that complexity when teaching students.”

So you think you can dance

Day after day this summer, Francisco Hidalgo pulled on his boots and stepped onto a worn, wooden floor in a dance studio in Granada, Spain to spend hours learning the detailed footwork of flamenco dancing. At the end of each day, he soaked his bleeding feet in hot water, vinegar and salt to relieve the pain. Hidalgo, an Upper School Spanish teacher who also teaches and performs Latin dancing, received a Teacher Creativity Fel-lowship from Lilly Endowment to learn flamenco dancing in its birthplace, the region of Andalucia. A native Spaniard who grew up in the northern Castille re-gion, Hidalgo was eager to learn the culture of this southern part of the country. As a teacher of Spanish and French for 16 years, he says it was stimulating to be a student once again. “It was exciting to move outside of my subject area from something intellectual and linguistic into something that is physical and musi-cal,” he says. “Flamenco is the most passionate and col-orful of all Latin dances. “It surprised me how mentally and physically hard it was – as a dance instructor, I thought it would be easy. At some point, I thought, ‘I might not be cut out for this’ – which is probably what my students feel at some points. But then something just clicked with the effort. “These physical chal-lenges reminded me that learning something new is difficult no matter how experienced or disciplined the student is. These painful lessons in flamenco remind me to take learning in the proper order and to give each lesson, no matter how basic, its due attention.” Hidalgo said flamenco also spurred his imagination for creat-ing new lessons and injecting creative movement and art into his classes. In addition, he says, “I somehow would like to make try-ing and failing more acceptable to my students in the sense that one can learn from failure rather than merely succumb to it.” During his stay in Granada, Hidalgo also took time to sight-see, and was especially moved by his trip to the Alhambra, where he sat quietly in its gardens. “The lesson that came to me in these serene surroundings is that knowledge and skill are often strength-ened during the pauses in our life. Sometimes it takes quiet and reflection to establish more firmly any content we are trying to learn.” He says he intends to incorporate this notion of ebb and flow as he works with his students. “It is important to work hard on any endeavor, but it is also important to take time for rest and recu-peration to restore one’s intellectual reserves for the next lesson.”

It’s all Greek to him

Latin and Classical Greek teacher Clifford Hull has visited Greece five times, but he had never seen it the way he did this summer. The recipient of a Fulbright Scholarship to study at the American School of Classical Studies in Athens, he had the op-portunity to visit sites normally inaccessible to tourists and to learn from archaeologists who are world experts in their fields. Hull was one of 19 Fulbright recipients to study in Athens for six weeks. “We were all Classicists, so we all have the same interests and passions. It was like I was back at grad school, being intellectually stimulated,” he says. Each of the scholars was required to give two presentations during their trip, which included visits to a half-dozen historic sites every day. The group travelled to a total of 120 locations throughout Greece, from Crete to the generally off-limits base-ment of the Parthenon. Hull says highlights of the trip included the temple of Knos-sos in Crete; watching Euripedes’ “Medea” presented in modern Greek at the ancient amphitheater of Epidaurus; and visiting Ver-gina, the tomb of Alexander the Great’s father King Phillip II. He also got a kick out of seeing Lord Byron’s signature in graffiti on a pillar at Sounion, the temple of Poseidon, in an area normally closed to visitors. “That tickled me to no end,” he says. Hull, who also teaches Classical Mythology at IUPUI, says he experienced many “ah-ha” moments during the trip. He espe-cially was struck by the scale of some of the archaeological relics he previously had only seen in photographs. “For example, in my class I show students a photo of a jar from Crete. I was surprised to find that it was in reality about a foot taller than I am. The ancient Greeks were small people, 5’2”, 5’3”, so that kind of per-spective I can portray to the kids.” He also says visiting the sites provided a geographic context that he can use to better describe Ancient Greece to his students. “We were overwhelmed with the archaeological insights. You can’t make a distinction between language and culture and his-tory, mythology or religion – they are so intertwined.” A native of South Africa in his 23rd year of teaching at Park Tudor, Hull says he never intended to become a Latin teacher. At the University of Stellenbosch, he planned to earn a degree in viticulture. “My advisor told me to take a Latin class. The second day when I came out of the class, I said ‘I’m going to be a Latin teacher.’ I had a brilliant professor who made me realize, ‘This is what I want.’ If she didn’t push me I probably would still be liv-ing in South Africa.” Today he holds master’s degrees in both classical archaeol-ogy and classical studies, along with library science. “And now I can’t believe I’m getting paid to teach Latin and Ancient Greek,” he says. Upper School students will have the opportunity to benefit even more from Hull’s summer studies next June, when he will lead a trip to Greece and Italy. The nine-day excursion will in-clude stops in Athens, Delphi and Patra and the islands of Aegina, Poros and Hydra. In Italy, cities will include Sorrento, Pompeii, Florence and Rome.

McAlear also organized videoconference discussion sessions for her AP World History classes with students at the Amman Bac-calaureate School (ABS), as well as King’s Academy, in Jordan. Joe Kimbell ’13, a freshman at Washington & Lee University, says, “We were paired with a partner from ABS who we got to know on a more personal level. This direct contact is incredibly important in learning about a completely different culture. It al-lowed me to compare what I had learned in class to my partner's actual experiences. It also allowed me to look at international con-flicts and issues from a completely different perspective.” Erin Biel ’09 also took part in those videoconferences, and says her experiences in McAlear’s class had a profound influ-ence on her. A graduate of Yale University, Biel currently is living in Mae Sot, Thailand, near the Myanmar border, on a Yale fel-lowship, working with an organization that assists Burmese mi-grants who live in Thailand. While at Yale, she worked with Yale Law students and the Iraqi Refugee Assistance Program to provide support services to Iraqi refugees. She writes via email, “Ms. McAlear was constantly trying to impress upon us the importance of understanding–moreover, sin-cerely empathizing–with others and making that a conscious part of our lives in the hopes that it would one day become a more natural (almost unconscious) part of our lives. Her emphasis on establishing positive connections with people, regardless of their background or circumstances, has continued to resonate with me….[her] teaching heavily influenced my academic trajectory.” During the recent Syrian crisis, McAlear has sent emails to many of the people she met in Syria, but has received only one re-ply: from a doctor she met in Damascus who travels to the United States to work in hospitals. He wrote, “My father and the rest of my family are all doing well but under very tremendous stress. We are still lucky consid-ering the circumstances, especially in Damascus…. I hope you are doing well and still trying to bring peace to people around the world although it seems your effort, at least in the ME, are not too much fruitful. So many people are working against you that the list of them could fill many pages. I still say good luck to you and Godspeed. You must teach your students about this region and get them to understand. All your trips to these countries here gives you good knowledge of the issues.”

Meet new members of the Park Tudor Alumni Association Board

The Park Tudor Alumni Association Board of Directors welcomes four new members: Ayn “Kate” Engle ’95 is a broker and realtor with RE/MAX Ability Plus. A graduate of Butler University with a B.S. in finance (cum laude) and a secondary major in arts administration, she earned her law degree as well as her MBA at Indiana University in Indianapolis. Kate shares her musical talents as principal clarinetist with the Hendricks Symphony Orchestra and Venti Dolci Woodwind Quintet, and is the lead vocalist of the “Tastes Like Chicken Band.” She enjoys tennis, music, running, reading and genealogy. Matt Kleymeyer ’00 is a market leader for Bernard Health, a company formed by brothers Alex ’98 and Brian ’00 Tolbert. This year, Matt received the Healthcare Su-perstar & Most Innovative Broker Award from the Institute for Healthcare Consum-erism. He holds a B.A. degree from De-Pauw University and an MBA from Butler University. Matt is actively involved in his community, serving as a member of the Penrod Society, Butler University Young Alumni Board and the DePauw Society Board. Matt is married to Andrea Kley-meyer. Jonathan McDowell ’02 is a finan-cial advisor with Northwestern Mutual. He received his bachelor’s degree in econom-ics from Wabash College, where he was a member of the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity. Jonathan and his wife Danielle have a two-and-a-half year-old son, Hunter, and are expecting another child. Jonathan enjoys golf, hunting and the Indianapolis Colts. Zach Wills ’03 received his B.A. degree in history from Colorado State University and recently earned his MBA from the IU Kelley School of Business. A product manager for Key Benefits, he is a member of Toast Masters International and the Kelley School of Business Indianapolis Alumni Council. Zach is married to Laura Wills and enjoys marathon running in his spare time. Each year, two seniors are selected to serve as senior class representatives. They

spend their senior year as ad-hoc members of the Alumni Board of Directors and make presentations at each board meeting. After graduation, they will serve as their class representatives. Our 2014 representatives are: Margaret House ’14, who has par-ticipated in many leadership roles while serving on Student Council. She is a cheer-leader as well as a member of the varsity soccer team, where she was recognized by her coaches and peers as a recipient of the Mental Attitude Award. Community service is important to her, and she gives her time to the Timmy Foundation, Race for the Cure, Elves for Education and the Spanish Club. Ravi Shah ’14, who serves as Student Council president and varsity captain of the Park Tudor boys tennis team. Ravi is also a member of the Honor Council, Cum Laude Society and the Legacy Initiative history project. He is a recipient of The Parents’ Association Award, presented to a student who has made an outstanding contribu-tion in academics and citizenship, and the Scholastic Art and Writing Award, in rec-ognition of his photography. Ravi says he is excited to serve as his alumni class rep-resentative: “I will never truly leave Park Tudor and I always want to be involved in the school I love so much.”

Sheridan Nichols Batt ’92 Sheridan was born in Sydney, Austra-lia but grew up Indianapolis and began at-tending Park Tudor in seventh grade. After receiving a degree in broadcast journalism from Indiana University, she worked as a news reporter and anchor at local CBS and NBC affiliates in Montana and Virginia. In 2000, Sheridan became one of the youngest members of the Endowment Society and credits her parents, John and Delie Nichols, for encouraging her: “My parents instilled in me the spirit of giving to worthy institutions such as Park Tudor,” she says. “I truly believe it's important to en-dow and fund programs and facilities for the betterment of future generations, par-ticularly since I was so enriched by the PT experience.” Sheridan adds that planned giving allows everyone—even those who don’t have the ability to give a lot—the means to make a difference.

Since becoming a member of the En-dowment Society, Sheridan married Brad Batt, creator and developer of Blue Zebra Sports, a company that offers an officiating management platform designed specifi-cally for college athletics. They currently live in Johnson City, Tennessee with their four children: Tripp (grade 5), Nic (grade 4), Brit (grade 1) and Ann Marie (age 1½). The boys attend St. Mary’s Catholic School in Johnson City. Sheridan says the school reminds her of her Park Tudor ex-perience because it offers small class sizes that enable teachers to nurture and develop the individual needs and abilities of their students. Sheridan has hung up her reporter’s microphone, but has not given up her ca-reer and personal goals. Along with caring for her family and running her boys to ten-nis, soccer and flag-football games, Sheri-dan is working on her Ph.D. in communi-cations, teaches a public-speaking course at East Tennessee State University, hosts “Inside Bristol,” a monthly show on the lo-cal television station, and even finds time to teach Zumba classes.

Alumni gather to honor Jim Foxlow

More than 100 alumni and faculty — including a number who traveled from throughout the country —gathered at Park Tudor on August 17 to honor retired Eng-lish teacher Jim Foxlow on the occasion of his 90th birthday. In introducing the speakers, Head of School Dr. Matthew Miller said, “Many of you came from far away for this event. It is truly a testament to your love and respect for this incredible man.” Park School and Park Tudor alumni Gordon Wishard ’62, Jim Worrall ’61, Tom Teel ’61, Alan Keller ’60 and Mary Stim-ming ’82 made brief remarks about the profound impact Mr. Foxlow had on their love of literature. Wishard said, “It’s in our great good fortune that you chose teaching as a pro-fession, but I wonder if profession is the right word….Consider the raw material that shuffled into your room…we really had no taste for it, no appetite for it, there was no joy in it for us…thank God you were more than a professional. You were a literary mis-sionary. Your singleminded goal was re-form. You were relentless about it in your zeal. Jim is an extraordinary gentleman. He walks into the room and generates goodwill. That’s magic, and you possess it.”

Stimming remarked, “I celebrate that he has been such a gift and such a blessing to me and to all of us here, not as just our teacher but as our friend and as our mentor. He and all of our teachers will never know the small moments that have changed our lives in so many ways.” Foxlow was joined by his three sons, Geoff ’77, David and Chris, at the party. In expressing his thanks, he said, “I suspect you all will be somewhat relieved to know that my being old and gray and full of sleep kept me from preparing proper re-marks on this happy occasion. But a friend in Maine some years ago introduced me to another friend saying, ‘Jim is full of stories and he’ll tell them at the drop of a hat.’ I’m afraid that remains true so I’d like to inflict on you one story that probably dates from the early 1960s. “I was giving a quiz in a middle school class and in the course of the period I was driven to what Mark Twain calls ‘the verge of irritation’ by a boy who approached my desk six or eight times with too many ques-tions about the questions I had set. When he came up again I said, ‘Is this question absolutely necessary?’ “He looked thoughtful at that, and fi-nally replied, ‘Well, maybe not absolutely necessary, any more than eight hours of sleep a night or three meals a day are ab-solutely necessary.’ I hope that story il-lustrates that very likely I learned more

from my students over the years than they learned from me.” And, in keeping with his love of the works of Thomas Hardy, he read the final entry from Hardy’s “Wessex Poems”: I look into my glass, And view my wasting skin, And say, “Would God it came to pass My heart had shrunk as thin!”

For then, I, undistrest By hearts grown cold to me, Could lonely wait my endless rest With equanimity.

But Time, to make me grieve, Part steals, lets part abide; And shakes this fragile frame at eve With throbbings of noontide.

People” trip chaperone and later to school archivist and business office assistant after retiring from the classroom. Mary Moses Cochran ’75 and Bob Hicks ’80 spoke at the event. “There were only ten girls in the entire seventh-grade class,” Cochran said. “Mr. O. took me under his wing and made me feel like I had at least one friend. You were that teacher who made a difference in my life.” Hicks noted, “Tony was a great teach-er. He connected the dots for people….He is just such a part of this place. He is a great friend not just to faculty, but to stu-dents.” Onstott remarked, “I think back that 47 years have gone rather quickly.” He remembered that when leading groups of students on his summer People-to-People tours, “There were no telephones, no cell phones, no music paraphernalia hanging out of their ears. They managed to talk the whole time. Thirty students for 45 days. After that I thought I could do just about anything.” He was presented with an iPad for a retirement gift. “I’m still in the 19th cen-tury,” he joked. He thanked those who attended the party, saying, “All of this was because Miss Whitford sat me down and signed a contract that lasted for 47 years.”

Join us for Europe trip

A special Park Tudor-sponsored trip to Europe for adults is scheduled for July 1-12, 2014. This is the first trip exclusively for Park Tudor parents, faculty and alumni, and it is also open to the community, espe-cially veterans and their adult children. The European War History & German Culture Trip will travel to cities including London, Cambridge, Normandy, Paris, Luxembourg, Bastogne, Nuremberg, Dres-den and Berlin. The trip, designed and to be led by Upper School history teacher Kathryn Le-rch, reflects many of the subjects currently offered to our students, but there are no

“tests” or essays due! Lerch teaches Mili-tary History and World Civilizations class-es. Four Park Tudor students took a similar trip in the summer of 2013, also designed and led by Lerch. PT Women’s Network launched

The new Park Tudor Women's Network was launched on August 30 with an early-evening event at Café Patachou, a restau-rant owned by Martha Hoover, mother of Sarah ’02, Rachael ’04 and David ’08 Hoover. Those attending enjoyed hors d’oeuvres, cocktails and conversation and listened to a brief talk by Mia Miller, wife of Head of School Dr. Matthew Miller, who shared how the Park Tudor communi-ty helped ease her transition to Indianapolis when the family moved here from New Or-leans in 2010. Organized by the Park Tudor Alumni Association Board of Directors, the Park Tudor Women’s Network plans to bring women of the school together regularly to share information and advice on topics ranging from career development to par-enting, local tips and information resourc-es. The group plans to host get-togethers, typically with a guest speaker. A Facebook group has been created as an informal way to share information. The former Park School campus on Cold Spring Road, now the home of Marian University, lost a landmark in September when the Park School headmaster’s house was razed. Marian University had used the building as a welcome center and storage facility. The building was originally part of the Carl Fisher estate. Fisher was an entrepreneur, real-estate developer, and one of the founders of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Class Notes1936Lucina Ball Moxley celebrated her 95th birthday on August 21, 2013. A published author and accomplished pianist, Lucina began playing the piano at age four and pursued piano studies in college. She remains very active in the musical community in Indianapolis, continuing to play the piano, teach and perform various two-piano concerts and recitals.

1946Virginia Obrecht Dulworth writes: “As class representative, it is always sad to report the death of one of our classmates. I was notified by Jeannine Grinslade Stokes and Sally Stokely Brown that Georgia White Nyhart passed away on June 25, 2013 in Camden, SC. Georgia was greatly loved by her children Maria, Malott, Patrick and Edward, who gave her ten grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. Her obituary noted that Georgia had touched many lives in her community by her generosity, kindness and compassion. She was gifted as a champion equestrienne and had a lifelong love of and concern for animals. Her beloved golden retriever, Tag-A-Long, had a special place in her heart. 1952Rosanna Hardin Hall opened her studio Villa dell’Artista for the First Friday Art Walk in Indianapolis on August 2, 2013. Visitors enjoyed her paintings of classical gardens in Italy, India, England and Hawaii, as well as the beautiful Victorian garden at the Woodruff Place studio. Two of her watercolor paintings of Italy also were featured in the Hoosier Salon annual juried show at the Indiana History Center in August. In addition, two of her Woodruff Place paintings have been published in “Painting Indiana III: Heritage of Place,” a book featuring historic sites in Indiana, created in conjunction with Indiana Plein Air Painters Association and Indiana Landmarks.

1957Becky Smith enclosed a note along with a gift to the school in memory of her classmate Beverly Raffensperger Fauvre, who died on August 5, 2013. She wrote, “Beverly was taken from us unexpectedly and far too soon…. She did more than anyone to keep the Class of 1957 together and in touch. She had the culture and class of a Tudor girl in every way – a fine person.”

1968Alison Kothe was named an honorary alumna of the Wabash College Class of 1969 during Wabash homecoming on September 21, 2013. Alison recently retired from Wabash as Director of Development.

In comments at the event, Charlie Raiser ’65 said, “You attempted to retire from Wabash three times, but we kept dragging you back because, frankly, you were irreplaceable. It seems as though you were always at Wabash, and it’s hard for us to imagine that your service stretched just a bit more than a decade. And yet in that window of time, you made Wabash a significantly stronger place. You engaged scores and scores of alumni and their families. You improved the lives of Wabash students, faculty, and staff. And you made every Wabash graduate with whom you interacted a better Wabash man.” Alison's brother Jim, Park School Class of 1964, is also a Wabash alum.

1969LeAnne Smith Hardy has written a new book, “Honddu Vale.” Set in tumultuous 16th-century Wales, it is the sequel to “Glastonbury Tor,” which was a finalist for the Christy Award for inspirational fiction. LeAnne has lived in six countries on four continents and now makes her home in the North Woods of Wisconsin.

1977• Lisa Hendrickson has launched a public relations and communications business, Lisa Hendrickson Communications, LLC. She has stepped down from her role as director of communications at Park Tudor but continues to serve as editor of The Park Tudor Phoenix. Lisa also received a grant from the Matthew Hansen Wilderness Foundation to write a biography of Julia Bennett, the first woman to own and operate a dude ranch in Montana. An article she wrote about Bennett appeared in the 2013 issue of “Montana Historian.”

• Lucy Bowen McCauley was profiled in a “First Person” article in “The Washington Post Magazine” in September. She wrote about her beginnings in dance and how she has developed her art over time: “I was always super-athletic and actually kind of coordinated, so I can see why [my mother] threw me in, but I didn’t like the pink tights! There were people in my classes that were better than I, but I had the passion, determination and love of it, which also gets you fairly far.”Bowen McCauley Dance traveled to China in November. The Arlington-based dance troupe is one of the first from America invited to participate in the 10th Guangdong Dance Festival, held November 5-13 in Guangzhou, China.

1987• Cathy Yingling Chapelle has joined Park Tudor as director of strategic communications. Cathy has more than 20 years of experience in marketing communications and most recently was director of public relations at the Indianapolis firm Caldwell VanRiper. In her new role, Cathy will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of the school's communications. Cathy served on the Alumni Association Board of Directors for five years and is its immediate past president.

• Laura Waters Zeigler was named by the “Los Angeles Business Journal” as a finalist for Corporate Counsel of the Year 2013.

1989Erik Ochsner conducted “The Music of Pixar” with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra at Clowes Memorial Hall in October 2013. The performance combined memorable scenes from Pixar movies with a live performance of the musical scores. Clowes Memorial Hall is celebrating its 50th anniversary year.

1993Emily Hebert Groves has joined Park Tudor as assistant director of communications, focusing on external relations and strategic communications initiatives that include the campus master plan and strategic plan. She also will support development communications and projects. From 1999 to 2012, she worked for Clear Channel Communications in Denver as a local sales representative, in Chicago as vice president of national sales, and in Indianapolis as a general sales manager. She also serves as a class representative for the Class of 1993. Emily and her husband, Jason, have two daughters, Libby (2½) and CeCe (eight months).

1997Sarah Smith Hawkins has been named program director for the Stanley K. Lacy Executive Leadership Series.

1998Katherine Elaine House earned her Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.) degree from the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine in June. Osteopathic physicians take a “whole person” approach to health care, emphasizing health education, proper nutrition, wellness, and injury and disease prevention. She will complete a three-year residency program in Internal Medicine at Kettering Medical Center in Dayton, OH. Her future plans include a cardiology fellowship and spending time with her two daughters, Isabella (9) and Elaina (7).

2004Karen “Kemmie” Mitzell is teaching French at Rushville High School in Greenfield. She has moved back to the Indianapolis area after teaching at University School of Jackson in Tennessee, where she introduced AP French for the

first time in the school's history and completely revamped its theater program. This summer, she took 12 high-schoolers to France for a study-abroad program she spent two years building.

2006Andrew Glassman created the Dogbone Wrap, a tool that anchors to the iPhone 5's charge port. The dog-bone-shaped tool allows consumers to wrap their headphones securely around it, without tangling or falling off. Glassman patented his invention before receiving his MBA degree in May.

2008Sarah Hann, special projects editor for “Humpty Dumpty Magazine for Kids,” filmed a video in the Park Tudor ceramics studio for the magazine’s website at www.uskidsmags.com. The video is a step-by-step guide to making ceramics.

2009Micah Johnson received a plaque from White Sox general manager Rick Hahn commemorating his leading 84 stolen bases in Minor League Baseball this season. He was named MVP of the Southern League Championship Series, won by his team, the AA Birmingham Barons, in five games. Johnson is working on his speed-based game in the Arizona Fall League, which will help him on the White Sox prospect list.

2010Reggie Nesbit completed Cadet Leadership Development Training at West Point Military Academy this summer, followed by leadership training in Fort Bragg, NC. He had an internship at Cisco Technology at Research Triangle Park, NC in July and returned to West Point for football camp/practice in August, where he has started his senior year. He is majoring in information technology.

2012Sam Geier won the singles championship at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Central Regional. A sophomore at Kenyon College, he won seven straight matches without dropping a set to win the singles crown.

2013Caroline Tucker turned over her role as president of the National Junior Classical League at its 60th annual convention in Las Vegas in July. She was interviewed by Nevada NPR and the “Las Vegas Review Journal,” saying it’s important to study Latin because of all the other disciplines with which it interacts, and that her love for Latin came from an inspirational teacher in middle school. Caroline, who attends Princeton University, continues to work with the League as secretary of the Indiana Senior Classical League.
