Fr. Joe’s Journal El Diario del Padre Joe We remember Lincoln’s Birthday! We should not forget the amazing contributions that Lin-coln made to our country. He saved the union and began our nation’s long journey from the evil of slavery, a journey that still continues. We also treas-ure his words that echo through history reminding us of the possibilities our nation has. I believe that pres-idents day diminished our appreciation of President Lincoln. We must never forget the legacy that he left. We pray for Ray Bower and his family. Ray Bower, a long time parishioner, died this past week. Ray would have celebrated his 94th birthday in July. Ray was a remarkable man who brought life where ever he was. He maintained his honesty to the end. He had a deep faith, a keen sense of humor and a strong love of life. All who knew him will miss him. I pray for his family and many friends. We will have visitation on Saturday, February 25th in the church from 9 to 11 a.m. followed by mass at 11 a.m. Parish Council meeting: The council has rec-ommended that we work to have more socials after the 10 am and 6 pm masses, I thank all our volunteers who help make the Lord present in our community. We have the blessing of many people who help in our parish ministry. They help is not always visible to all our parishioners. We, for a parish our size, have a remarkable number of volunteers. I thank all of our many volunteers and our staff who assist them. We continue to need new volunteers. You can contact the rectory if you are interested in helping our parish. We discovered we have to make some emergency repairs on the school. We have signed a contract for those repairs. It will cost us ap-proximately $14,000 to do these emergency repairs. We continue to need your financial support. We thank the Knights for sponsoring a blood drive last week. St. Pat’s party coming in March. It will take place on March 4th. I ask you to buy your tickets for this great event. It has great food, great entertainment and great comradery. I look forward to it. We continue the To Teach who Christ is effort. We are approaching our goal. I ask if you have not yet made a pledge to consider making one. There are several priests who are seriously ill and in need of prayer. See this bulletin for other important arti-cles and event announcements.

God bless you, your pastor, Fr. Joe

Hemos comenzado a contratar esos arreglos.

Since the first of the year we welcomed two new volunteers to our food pantry team. Robby is a graduate student at Loyola University. He wants to give back to his community even though he is work-ing on his dissertation. Robby will be joining anoth-er graduate student Wendy interviewing clients and helping wherever needed. We also welcomed Leah, a resident of Misericordia, who wants to be involved with helping others. Leah’s responsibilities will in-clude bagging produce, tea bags and filling in as needed while the pantry is open. Our food pantry team is a diverse group of young and mature volun-teers who over the years have become friends. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Ignatian Services at [email protected] This week’s second collection is for Ignatian Services. We appreciate your continued support of our ministry.

Remember we are all Ignatian Services.

CHOICE “If you choose you can keep the command-ments,” Sirach tells us. God “has set before you fire and water; to whichever you choose, stretch forth your hand” (Sirach 15:15, 16). This is a great mys-tery: God does not control us so completely that we cannot choose our own path. We have certain bound-aries, of course, but no one but we can choose our way within those boundaries. In today’s reading from Matthew’s Gospel, Jesus reminds us of our freedom and our responsibility for our lives. He calls us to look beyond the words of the commandments, all the way to their meaning. Look beyond the adultery to the selfishness that poisons our love. Look beyond the murder to the anger that eats away at our compassion. Look beyond the per-jured testimony to the lies and deception that drive our behavior. Our vocation is to choose life for ourselves, and to choose a path through our part of the world that helps make life possible and more abundant for oth-ers as well. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

St. Valentine’s Day

Flowers, candy, red hearts and romance. That's what Valentine's day is all about, right? Well, maybe not. The origin of this holiday for the expres-sion of love really isn't romantic at all. Valentine was a Roman Priest during the second century, in a time that the Church was persecuted. The Emperor had an edict that prohibited the marriage of young peo-ple. This was based on the hypothesis that unmarried soldiers fought better than mar-ried soldiers because married soldiers might be afraid of what might happen to them or their wives or families if they died. The idea of en-couraging them to marry within the Church was what Valentine was about. And he secretly married them because of the edict. Eventually he was caught, im-prisoned and tortured for performing marriage cere-monies against command of Emperor Claudius II. He kept preaching and celebrating weddings when imprisoned, having some of the prison guards con-verting. He was condemn to death in the year 273.

St. Valentine, guide our young couples
