S Always wear face or dust mask if operationis dusty.

S Always wear heavy, long pants, longsleeves, boots, and gloves. Wearingsafetyleg guards is recommended.

S Always wear foot protection. Do not gobarefoot or wear sandals. Stay clear ofspinning line.

S Secure hair above shoulder length. Secureor remove loose clothing or clothing withloosely hanging ties, straps, tassels, etc.They can be caught in moving parts.

S Being fully covered also helps protect youfrom debris and pieces of toxic plantsthrown by spinning line.

S Stay alert. Do not operate this unit when youare tired, ill, upset or under the influence of al-cohol, drugs, or medication. Watch what youare doing; use common sense.

S Wear hearing protection.S Mufflers fitted with catalytic converters getvery hot during use and remain so for sometime after stopping. This also applies at idlespeed. Contact can result in burns to theskin.Remember the risk of fire!

S Never start or run inside a closed room orbuilding. Breathing exhaust fumes can kill.

S Keep handles free of oil and fuel.

UNIT / MAINTENANCE SAFETYS Disconnect the spark plug before performingmaintenance except carburetor adjustments.

S Look for and replace damaged or looseparts before each use. Look for and repairfuel leaks beforeuse. Keep in goodworkingcondition.

S Replace trimmer head parts that arechipped, cracked, broken, or damaged inany other way before using the unit.

S Maintain unit according to recommended pro-cedures. Keep cutting line at proper length.

S Use only 2 mm diameter Partner brand line.Never use wire, rope, string, etc.

S Install required shield properly before usingthe unit. Use only specified trimmer head;make sure it is properly installed and se-curely fastened.

S Make sure unit is assembled correctly asshown in this manual.

S Make carburetor adjustments with lowerend supported to prevent line fromcontact-ing any object.

S Keep others away whenmaking carburetoradjustments.

S Use only recommended Partner accesso-ries and replacement parts.

S Have all maintenance and service not ex-plained in this manual performed by an au-thorized service dealer.

CUTTING SAFETY

WARNING: Inspect the area beforeeach use. Remove objects (rocks, brokenglass, nails, wire, etc.) which can be thrownby or become entangled in line. Hard objectscan damage the trimmer head and be throwncausing serious injury.S Use only for trimming, scalping, mowingand sweeping. Do not use for edging, prun-ing or hedge trimming.

S Keep firm footing and balance. Do not over-reach.

S Keep all parts of your body away frommuf-fler and spinning line. Keep engine belowwaist level. A hot muffler can cause seriousburns.

S Cut from your right to your left. Cutting onleft side of the shield will throw debris awayfrom the operator.

S Use only in daylight or good artificial light.S Use only for jobs explained in this manual.TRANSPORTING AND STORAGES Allow the engine to cool; secure unit beforestoring or transporting in vehicle.

S Empty fuel tank before storing or transport-ing the unit.Use up fuel left in thecarburetorby starting engine and letting it run until itstops.

S Store unit and fuel in an areawhere fuel va-pors cannot reach sparks or open flamesfrom water heaters, electric motors orswitches, furnaces, etc.

S Store unit so line limiter cannot accidentallycause injury. Unit can be hung by the shaft.

S Store the unit out of the reach of children

SPECIAL NOTICE: Exposure to vibra-tions through prolonged use of gasoline pow-ered hand tools could cause blood vessel ornerve damage in the fingers, hands, andjoints of people prone to circulation disordersor abnormal swellings. Prolonged use in coldweather has been linked toblood vesseldam-age in otherwise healthy people. ASSEMBLY

WARNING: Make sure unit is proper-ly assembled and all fasteners are secure.Examine parts for damage. Do not use dam-aged parts.It is normal for the fuel filter to rattle in theempty fuel tank.Finding fuel or oil residue onmuffler is normaldue to carburetor adjustments and testingdone by the manufacturer.

SHAFT ASSEMBLYCAUTION: When assembling shaft, placethe unit on a flat surface for stability.1. Align grooves on upper and lower shafts.

2. Push the two shafts together until the lowershaft is fully seated in the upper shaft (theshafts lock into place).

ADJUSTING THE HANDLE

WARNING: When adjusting the assisthandle, besure it remains above the safety labeland below the mark or arrow on the shaft.1. Loosen wing nut on handle.2. Rotate the handle on the shaft to an up-

right position; retighten wing nut.ATTACHING THE SHIELD

WARNING: The shield must be prop-erly installed. The shield provides partialprotection from the risk of thrown objects tothe operator and others and is equipped witha line limiter which cuts excess line. The linelimiter (on underside of shield) is sharp andcan cut you.1. Remove nut from shield.2. Insert bracket into slot on shield.3. Pivot shield until bolt passes through hole

in bracket.4. Reinstall nut and tighten securely with

wrench (provided).

OPERATION

WARNING: Be sure to read the fuelinformation in the safety rules before you be-gin. If you do not understand the safety rules,do not attempt to fuel your unit. Contact anauthorized service dealer.FUELING ENGINE

WARNING: Remove fuel cap slowlywhen refueling.This engine is certified to operate on unleadedgasoline. Before operation, gasoline must bemixed with a good quality 2-cycle air-cooled en-gine oil designed to be mixed at a ratio of 40:1(2.5%). A40:1 ratio is obtained bymixing 5 litersof unleaded gasoline with 0,125 liter of oil. DONOT USE automotive oil or boat oil. These oilswill cause engine damage. When mixing fuel,follow instructions printedon oil container. Onceoil is added to gasoline, shake container mo-mentarily to assure that the fuel is thoroughlymixed. Always read and follow the safety rulesrelating to fuel before fueling your unit.IMPORTANTExperience indicates that alcohol blendedfuels (called gasohol or using ethanol ormethanol) can attractmoisturewhich leads toseparation and formation of acids during stor-age. Acidic gas can damage the fuel systemof an engine while in storage. To avoid engineproblems, empty the fuel system before stor-age for 30 days or longer. Drain the gas tank,

start the engine and let it run until the fuel linesand carburetor are empty. Use fresh fuel nextseason. Never use engine or carburetorcleanerproducts in the fuel tank orpermanentdamage may occur.HOW TO STOP YOUR UNITS To stop the engine, move the ON/OFFswitch to the OFF position.

WARNING: The trimmer head willturn while starting the engine. Avoid any con-tact with the muffler. A hot muffler can causeserious burns.

STARTING A COLD ENGINE (or awarm engine after running out offuel)1. Set unit on a flat surface.2. Move ON/OFF switch to the ON position.3. Slowly press the primer bulb 6 times.4. Move choke lever to FULL CHOKE posi-

tion.5. Squeeze and hold trigger through all re-

maining steps.

6. Pull starter rope handle sharply until en-gine sounds as if it is trying to start, but donot pull rope more than 6 times.

7. As soon as engine sounds as if it is trying tostart, move choke lever to HALF CHOKE.

8. Pull starter rope sharply until engine runs,but no more than 6 pulls. If the enginedoesn’t start after 6 pulls (at the HALFCHOKE position), move the choke lever tothe FULL CHOKE position and press theprimer bulb 6 times. Squeeze and hold thethrottle trigger and pull the starter rope 2more times. Move the choke lever to theHALF CHOKE position and pull the starterrope until the engine runs, but nomore than6 pulls. NOTE: If engine still doesn’t start,it is probably flooded. Proceed to START-ING A FLOODED ENGINE.

9. Once the engine starts, allow it to run 10seconds, then move the choke lever toRUN. Allow the unit to run for 30 moreseconds at RUN before releasing thethrottle trigger. NOTE: If engine dieswiththechoke lever in theRUN position,movethe choke lever to the HALF CHOKEposition and pull the rope until engineruns, but no more than 6 pulls.

STARTING A WARM ENGINE1. Move ON/OFF switch to the ON position.2. Move the choke lever to the HALF

CHOKE position.3. Squeeze and hold the throttle trigger.

Keep throttle trigger fully squeezed untilthe engine runs smoothly.

4. Pull starter rope sharply until engine runs,but no more than 5 pulls.

5. Allow engine to run 15 seconds, thenmovethe choke lever to the RUN position.

NOTE: If engine has not started, pull starterrope 5more pulls. If enginestill does not run, itis probably flooded.

STARTING A FLOODED ENGINEFlooded engines can be started by placingthe choke lever in theRUNposition; then, pullthe rope to clear the engine of excess fuel.This could require pulling the starter handlemany times depending on how badly the unitis flooded. If the unit still doesn’t start, refer toTROUBLESHOOTING TABLE.

WARNING: Always wear eye protec-tion and hearing protection. Never lean overthe trimmer head. Rocks or debris can rico-chet or be thrown into eyes and face andcause blindness or other serious injury.Do not run the engine at a higher speed thannecessary. The cutting line will cut efficientlywhen the engine is run at less than full throttle.At lower speeds, there is less engine noise andvibration. The cutting line will last longer andwillbe less likely to “weld” onto the spool.Always release the throttle trigger and allow theengine to return to idle speed when not cutting.To stop engine:S Release the throttle trigger.S Move the ON/OFF switch to the OFF posi-tion.

TRIMMER LINE ADVANCEAdvance line by tapping the bottomof the cut-ting head lightly on the groundwhile engine isrunning at full speed. The metal line limiterblade attached to the guard will cut the line tothe proper length.

WARNING: Useminimum speed anddo not crowd the line when cutting aroundhard objects (rock, gravel, fence posts, etc.),whichcandamage the trimmer head, becomeentangled in the line, or be thrown causing aserious hazard.S The tip of the line does the cutting. S The line will easily remove grass andweeds fromaroundwalls, fences, trees andflower beds, but it also can cut the tenderbark of trees or shrubs and scar fences.

S For trimming or scalping, use less than fullthrottle to increase line life and decreasehead wear, especially:S During light duty cutting.S Near objects around which the line can-wrap such as small posts, trees or fencewire.

S Formowing or sweeping, use full throttle fora good clean job.

TRIMMING -- Hold the bottom of the trimmerhead about 80mm above the ground and at anangle. Allow only the tip of the line to make con-tact. Do not force trimmer line into work area.

SCALPING -- The scalping technique removesunwanted vegetation. Hold the bottom of thetrimmer head about 80 mm above the groundand at an angle. Allow the tip of the line to strikethe ground around trees, posts, monuments,etc. This technique increases line wear.Scalping

MOWING -- Your trimmer is ideal for mowingin places conventional lawn mowers cannotreach. In the mowing position, keep the lineparallel to the ground. Avoid pressing thehead into the ground as this can scalp theground and damage the tool.Mowing

SWEEPING -- The fanning action of the rotat-ing line can be used for a quick and easyclean up. Keep the line parallel to and abovethe surfaces being swept and move the toolfrom side to side.Sweeping

CHECK FOR DAMAGED ORWORN PARTSContact an authorized service dealer for re-placement of damaged or worn parts.S ON/OFF Switch -- Ensure ON/OFF switchfunctions properly by moving the switch tothe OFF position. Make sure engine stops;then restart engine and continue.

S Fuel Tank -- Discontinue use of unit if fueltank shows signs of damage or leaks.

S Debris Shield -- Discontinue use of unit ifdebris shield is damaged.

INSPECT AND CLEAN UNIT ANDLABELSS After each use, inspect complete unit forloose or damaged parts. Clean the unit andlabels using a damp cloth with a mild deter-gent.

S Wipe off unit with a clean dry cloth.CLEAN AIR FILTERA dirty air filter decreases engine perform-ance and increases fuel consumption andharmful emissions. Always clean after every5 hours of operation.1. Clean the cover and the area around it to

keep dirt from falling into the carburetorchamber when the cover is removed.

2. Remove parts as illustrated.NOTE: Donot clean filter ingasoline orotherflammablesolvent toavoid creatinga firehaz-ard or producing harmful evaporative emis-sions.3. Wash the filter in soap and water.4. Allow filter to dry.5. Replace parts.

REPLACE SPARK PLUGReplace the spark plug each year to ensurethe engine starts easier and runs better. Setspark plug gap at 0,6 mm. Ignition timing isfixed and nonadjustable.1. Twist, then pull off spark plug boot.2. Remove spark plug fromcylinder anddis-

card.3. Replace with Champion RCJ-6Y spark

plug and tighten securely with a 19 mmsocket wrench.

4. Reinstall the spark plug boot.

SERVICE AND ADJUSTMENTSREPLACING THE LINE1. Press the tabs on the side of the trimmer

head and remove cover and spool.

2. Remove any remaining line.3. Clean dirt and debris from all parts. Re-

place spool if it is worn or damaged.4. Replace with a pre-wound spool, or re-

place line using a 8meters length of 2mmdiameter Partner brand line.

WARNING: Never use wire, rope,string, etc., which canbreak off and becomeadangerous missile.

5. When installing new line on an existingspool, hold the spool as shown.

6. Bend the line at the midpoint and insertthe bend into the slot in the center rim ofthe spool. Ensure line snaps into positionin the slot.

7. With your finger between the lines, wrapthe lines evenly and firmly around thespool in a clockwise direction.

8. Position the lines in the guide slots.

9. Place the spool in the cover as shownbelow.

10. Insert the ends of the lines through exitholes in the sides of the cover.

11. Reinstall the spool and cover onto thetrimmer head. Push until cover snaps intoplace.

CARBURETOR ADJUSTMENT

WARNING: Keep others away whenmaking idle speed adjustments. The trimmerhead will be spinning during this procedure.Wear your protective equipment and observeall safety precautions.

The carburetor has been carefully set at thefactory. Adjustments may benecessary if younotice any of the following conditions:S Engine will not idle when the throttle is re-leased.

Make adjustments with the unit supported sothe cutting attachment is off the ground andwill not make contact with any object. Holdthe unit by handwhile runningandmakingad-justments. Keep all parts of your body awayfrom the cutting attachment and muffler.Idle Speed AdjustmentAllow engine to idle. Adjust speed until engineruns without stalling (idle speed too slow).S Turn idle speed screw clockwise to in-creaseenginespeed if enginestalls or dies.

S Turn idle speed screw counterclockwise todecrease engine speed.

STORAGE

WARNING: Perform the followingsteps after each use:S Allow engine to cool before storing or trans-porting.

S Store unit and fuel in a well ventilated areawhere fuel vapors cannot reach sparks oropen flames from water heaters, electricmotors or switches, furnaces, etc.

S Empty fuel tank before storing or transport-ing the unit.

S Store unit and fuel well out of the reach ofchildren.

S Store unit with all guards in place. Positionunit so that any sharp object cannot acci-dentally cause injury.

SEASONAL STORAGEPrepare unit for storage at end of season or ifit will not be used for 30 days or more.If your unit is to be stored for a period of time:S Clean the entire unit before lengthy stor-age.

S Store in a clean dry area.S Lightly oil external metal surfaces.

ENGINES Remove spark plug and pour 1 teaspoon of40:1, 2-cycle engine oil (air cooled) throughthe spark plug opening. Slowly pull thestarter rope 8 to 10 times to distribute oil.

S Replace spark plugwith new one of recom-mended type and heat range.

S Clean air filter.S Check entire unit for loose screws, nuts,and bolts. Replace any damaged, broken,or worn parts.

S At the beginning of the next season, useonly fresh fuel having theproper gasoline tooil ratio.

OTHERS Do not store gasoline from one season toanother.

S Replace your gasoline can if it starts to rust.
