Parts of a Cell Tuesday 9.7.10 Cell- the most basic unit of life! But, what makes an organism living? How do we know something is living? What makes an organism living is if it has the: 1. Ability to respond 2. Ability to grow 3. Ability to digest 4. Ability to reproduce 5. Ability to move Long ago, famous scientists Robert Hooke and Anton van Leeuwenhoek came up with a theory after discovering cells called Cell Theory. Cell Theory says that: 1. The cell is the basic unit of life. 2. All living organisms are composed of cells. Living organisms can have only one cell (very small!) or many cells (larger in size!) 3. New cells are created by old cells dividing into two. Cells contain organelles, which can be remembered as “baby organs” that have their own special job, each different from every other organelle! Some organelles make energy, some clean up, some help move a cell, etc… Think of classroom jobs! There are 3 major types of cells found in different types of organisms! There is a type of cell found in bacteria and germs, one type of cell found in animals and one type of cell found in plants!

Parts of a Cell Tuesday 9.7.10 Cell- the most basic unit of life! But, what makes an organism living? How do we know something is living? What makes an organism living is if it has the:

1. Ability to respond 2. Ability to grow 3. Ability to digest 4. Ability to reproduce 5. Ability to move

Long ago, famous scientists Robert Hooke and Anton van Leeuwenhoek came up with a theory after discovering cells called Cell Theory. Cell Theory says that: 1. The cell is the basic unit of life. 2. All living organisms are composed of cells. Living organisms can have only one cell (very small!) or many cells

(larger in size!) 3.

3 Major Types of Cells Prokaryotic Bacterial Cell Eukaryotic Animal Cell Eukaryotic Plant Cell

1. Has no nucleus- the DNA floats

freely 2. The first type of cell to appear on

Earth 3. Move by cilia (pili) hair=like

structures and by a flagella (tail) 4. Pill-shaped 5. Contains no major organelles 6. Contains liquid-like cytoplasm

1. The cell structures of animals! 2. Contains many organelles!

a. Mitochrondria = energy!! b. Cell Membrane = protection c. Nucleus=contains DNA! d. Vacuole=Stores Water e. Ribosomes=Make proteins f. Lysosome=breaks down

food g. Golgi=packaging center! h. Endoplasmic Reticulum=

assembly line! 3. Circular / Oval Shaped

1. Square-shaped! 2. Contains Chloroplasts=used to

convert sunlight into food! 3. Contains chlorophyll= “fills” the

plant with green color! 4. Contains a cell wall= makes a plant

stand up straight=very tough!

Directions: Within the Venn Diagrams below, list similarities and differences between each pair of cell types: Eukaryotic Animal Cell Eukaryotic Plant Cell Eukaryotic Animal Cell Prokaryotic Bacterial Cell

Homework: Question Set- To be completed in notebook in complete sentences!

1. An earthworm has just washed up on shore. How would you know if it is living? 2. What does a prokaryotic cell lack that eukaryotic cells have? 3. A factory uses an assembly line to move things from one place to another. Which cell organelle does the same thing?
