It does so by a concrete analysis of the young person's first experience of leaving home, of the space left (the parental home) and the new space occupied (their new home), as well as of the objects which circulate between the two. Ambivalence characterises this transition. Closeness is maintained with the family, at the same time as distance is sought. Two selves exist. There is the "child" self, attached to the family and inscribed in the objects and space of the parental home. There is also the self of the "young adult", in the process of becoming and needing a break with the familiar world so as to create itself. The process of separation of young people from their parents involves a constant balance between proximity and distance, attachment and detachment.
