Bishop Jung Responds to Judicial Ruling

Long and anxiously awaited decisions handed down by our Judicial Council pleased some, angered others, and mystified yet others. A full report can be found at UMC.org by Linda Bloom, but the Judicial Council predictably maintained a straightforward and conservative reading of our current Book of Discipline. This is exactly what the Judicial Council exists to do. It does not challenge doctrine and polity; it does not reinterpret doctrine and polity. Our Judicial Council holds the institution of The United Methodist Church accountable to the legislative decisions of the General Conference. So, there is really no surprise, though different perspectives were hoping for different outcomes.

Our denomination continues to navigate through a minefield of differing opinions, beliefs, interpretations, and theological worldviews. During certain times in our history, this grace-space for the broadest spectrum of Christian interpretation has been our strength. Not so much in recent years. Living in the liminal spaces of uncertainty and disagreement is stressful, and the current rulings move us no closer to resolution. Our Commission on A Way Forward is doing the interpretive and generative work. We will see what they offer very soon.

And where does this leave us? It leaves us in the same flawed and imperfect world in which humankind dwelt since Eden. It leaves us “working out our own salvation with fear and trembling” in the grand tradition of our Philippian forebears. It leaves us as beloved children of God, living together in grace and compassion, seeking to be faithful to love God and one another. Nothing has really changed. We are the same church today that we were yesterday – but by God’s grace we are becoming the people of faith our world most desperately needs. It is my deepest hope and desire that we can unite in our faith in Christ and our love for God’s church that we might witness to healing love and restorative justice. Our journey toward full inclusion is fraught with perils, pressures and problems, but our God is greater!

This is a time to pray for Karen Oliveto, the Mountain Sky Conference, and our whole United Methodist denomination. Now is a time for intercessory prayer. Now is a time for adoration and praise. Now is a time for confession and petition. Now is a time for us to find our center in our faith as we pray, together, “not our will, but thine be done.”

Women of Wesley/Church Family: Thank you for the care package! It couldn’t have come at a better

things in the mail. Thank you for thinking of me as I am away at college. —Jessica Meinders

Thank you: for giving so generously. $143 was collected for Feed My Starving Children and will go

directly to helping pay for the food costs. Thousands of meals were packed!

Dear Church: Every week we “borrow” some of your paper towels Please accept our gift of new

ones! Thank you! - Girl Scout Troup 6129

Herbert. We appreciate your help with this local Marshfield Mission Project. Wesley's next scheduled

week to staff the Food Pantry is June 12th through the 16th.

Missions

Noisy Can Mission of the Month

The American Cancer Society’s Hope Lodge is a unique facility that provides a short term, comfortable place to stay (at no cost to the patient) for those receiving outpatient oncology treatment at St. Joseph’s Hospital here in Marshfield. Hope Lodge also provides an outstanding support group and network for loved ones and their families who are walking through the difficult road of cancer. Known as the “Home of Hope”, it’s a beautiful ministerial way our community can help ease both the financial and decisional burdens of many who find themselves in that difficult place no one ever wants to find themselves in.

They have an excellent and comprehensive website dealing with all sorts of topics relating to cancer. You can access it via this link:

Marshfield Feed My Starving Children (FMSC) Stats for 2017

The 2017 event this year was a success. As a community we packed 272,160 meals which filled one full semi-truck. We had 1,390 volunteers this year, provided by 20 churches in the surrounding area. More importantly the meals packed will provide 745 kids with something to eat every day for a year. Praise God! That’s awesome!! Please be sure to share the positive news and thank all those who packed and/or donated. Also noteworthy there were about 10 large school groups that participated over the three days from various schools. Plus the special needs department at Senior High along with the ODC special needs hospital employees played a role. The FMSC staff was very appreciative regarding how smooth the event went. We cleaned up in a record one hour with help from a young adults small group from Highland Community Church.

Financially we’re sitting in a similar position to last year. The website does not reflect our totals yet however of the $59,875 needed to pay for the food packed we have currently raised around $52,000. There are a number of churches still sending in donations from various efforts so please pray for generosity. Donations can still be made at www.marshfieldfmsc.com or by mailing a check referencing our event code 1704-026EA (Marshfield Mobile Pack)

Thanks again for another great year. If you have any questions or want further details pertaining to the event please let me know and I’ll try to get you the information.
