The Apostleship of Prayer is a worldwide association of Catholics and other Christians who strive to make their ordinary, everyday lives apostolic-ally effective. Through the Apostleship of Prayer, the Pope gives his monthly prayer intentions to the entire Church. For this reason, the Apostle-

Do you know a senior who has just graduated from High School? As many of our teens move on to college, you can help them continue their journey of faith. Many colleges provide a Newman Center for Catholic students. These cen-ters offer pastoral support and ministry to students and also provide a space to meet other Catholic students interested in growing in their faith. Encourage these new college students to join the Newman Center. May God bless, guide and protect them in there new endeavors.

RESPECT LIFE NEWS Spiritual Adoption Program HAPPY BIRTHDAY SPIRITUALLY ADOPTED BABY!

Your spiritually adopted baby is born this month - - nine months after his/her mother conceived him/her. The only change at birth is a change in the external life support

system of the baby. He/she is no different now than he/she was before birth except that he breathes and eats differently. He/she is truly a miracle. He/she began as a 46-chromosome cell and has devel-oped over the past nine months into this unique human baby. Never before in history, nor ever again, will anyone exist who is just like your spiritually adopted baby. Your prayers saved his/her life. Thank you on behalf of all of the little babies that you cared enough to pray for him/her and his/her mother.

Focus On Religious Freedom

from Catholics For Freedom of Religion www.cffor.com Philadelphia vs. Catholic Social Services: The Archdiocese of Philadelphia and 3 foster parents are suing the City in a religious freedom case centered on the placement of children in foster care. Despite issuing a recent plea for more candidates for foster care, the City of Philadelphia has abruptly ended contracts with Catholic Social Services (CSS) and Bethany

Christian Services because it disagrees with their teaching on marriage and family. These Christian agencies do not interview same-sex couples as candidates for foster care. Instead, they refer these couples to dozens of other agencies that do place children in same-sex homes. However, these agencies do work with LGBT youth. But, their religious convictions do not allow them to place any children into homes headed by LGBT adults. "CSS is, at its core, an institution founded on faith-based principles," said spokesman Ken Gavin. "As such, CSS would not be able to consider foster care placement within the context of a same-sex union." Three women who have cared for foster children for many years were named as plain-tiffs and charged that the city's actions discriminate against them "for their religious beliefs and prac-tices (and) unlawfully try to coerce them to speak contrary to their religious beliefs ..." "What justice is there in taking stable, loving homes away from children?" said one fos-ter parent. "If the city cuts off CSS, foster moms like me won't have the help and support they need to care for the special-needs kids." Another foster parent said, "I have relied on CSS for (professional) support for years and the city is taking away this help and is causing harm and heart-ache to countless families like mine."

Prayer for Grandparents

Lord Jesus, you were born of the Virgin Mary, the

daughter of Saints Joachim and Anne. Look with love on Grandparents the world over.

Protect them! They are a source of enrichment for families, for the Church and for all of society.

Support them! As they grow older, may they continue to be for their families

Strong pillars of Gospel faith, guardians of noble domestic ideals,

living treasuries, of sound religious traditions. Make them teachers of wisdom and courage, that they may pass on to future generations

the fruits of their mature human and spiritual experience.

lord Jesus, help families and society

to value the presence and role of grandparents. May they never be ignored or excluded, But always encounter respect and love.

Help them to live serenely and to feel welcomed in all the years of life which you give them.

Mary, Mother of all the living, keep grandparents consistently in your care, accompany them on their earthly pilgrimage, and by your prayers, grant that all families

may one day be reunited in our heavenly home-land, where you await all humanity

for the great embrace of life without end. Amen!

Pope’s Prayer

Pope Benedict XVI

Written especially for the

Catholic Grandparents Association in 2008.

July 26 is the feast of Joachim and Anne. Who are they and what do we know about them?

Joachim and Anne are the parents of Mary, the mother of Jesus, yet there is absolutely no biblical reference to them whatsoever. So where do we get their names, and what is their story? Their names are found in an apocryphal (hidden) gospel known as "The Infancy Gospel of James." Apocryphal, or hidden gospels, consist of accounts of Jesus' life that were ultimately not accepted as inspired works, and thus were not included in the Bible. However, they sometimes captured the Christian imagination, spilling into the devotional dimension of the community. James' infancy gospel begins with the parents of Mary and their desire for a child. In their prayer and petitions to God, they are heard and given the blessings of a child, whom they named Mary. While we have no idea who Mary's parents really were, the fact that we celebrate the feast of Joachim and Anne indicates that the bond of family love is important in the Christian life. National Grandparents’ Day was established in 1978 to be celebrated each year on the first Sunday after Labor Day, this year on September 9th. Long before Grandparents' Day was established, the church had a feast that honored the presumed grandparents of Jesus. While their names are part of non' inspired apocryphal legends, the fact of the Sav-ior's human ancestry is not. Christ, the incarnate Word, dwelt among us in the flesh in a human family. In honoring the grandparents of Jesus, we really proclaim our faith in the Incarnation-God becoming human!
