PATRIOT LEAGUE IN THE FCS PLAYOFFS: Patriot League teams are 7-10 in FCS Playoff games since 2010, winning at least one game in the postseason in six of the last nine seasons. Colgate’s 23-20 victory over James Madison helped them advance to the quarterfinal round for the second time in four years. PatriotLeague

Now in its third decade as an all-sport conference combining academic and athletic excellence, the Patriot League sponsors championships in 24 men and women’s sports. Initially started as an NCAA Division I-AA football conference in 1986, the Patriot League became an all-sport confer-ence in 1990 and includes American, Army West Point, Boston University, Bucknell, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Lehigh, Loyola Maryland and Navy as full members, and Fordham, Georgetown, MIT and Richmond as associate members. These institutions are among the oldest and most pres-tigious in the nation and their alumni have and continue to play leadership roles in shaping our country.

The Patriot League’s mission is simple: to provide successful competitive athletic experiences while maintaining high academic standards, and to prepare its student-athletes to be leaders in society. During the 2017-18 academic year, Patriot League student-athletes and teams accomplished the following:

*99 Patriot League teams (47.0 percent of League teams) earned NCAA Public Recognition Awards for ranking in the top 10 percent of their sport in Academic Progress Rate (APR), with a Patriot League record 90 squads earning perfect scores.

*The Patriot League ranked second among all conferences in Public Rec-ognition Awards, and tied for the national lead with the Ivy League for the highest percentage of teams earning the honor at 47.0 percent.

*The League’s 96 percent graduation success rate (GSR) is the third-best mark in the nation, finishing in the top-three in each year since the rating has been released in 2013. All 10 member schools were at 90 percent or higher, each exceeding the record-high national GSR of 88 percent. In ad-dition the League’s 84 percent Federal Graduation Rate (FGR) places it as the national leader for the sixth-consecutive year.

*Bucknell’s Christine Bendzinski (Women’s Cross Country/Indoor Track & Field) and Jeff Gottesman (Baseball) were named the Patriot League Fe-male and Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year honorees, respectively.

*9 student-athletes earned Google Cloud CoSIDA Academic All-Amer-ica recognition, including first-team accolades for Navy’s Megan Hagerty (Women’s Soccer) and Stephen Born (Baseball), Army West Point’s Ken-neth Brinson (Football) and Matt Ball (Baseball). Second team honorees include Navy’s Sydney Fortson (Women’s Soccer) and Third team recipi-ents include Bucknell’s Kendall Ham (Women’s Soccer), Navy’s Patricia Mattingly (Volleyball), Bucknell’s Jeff Gottesman (Baseball), Lehigh’s Conor Gaffney (Men’s Lacrosse).

*30 Patriot League student-athletes received Google Cloud/CoSIDA Aca-demic All-District recognition.

*There were a Patriot League record 3,011 student-athletes on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll in 2017-18.

*Bucknell’s Meghan Kovac (softball) and Lafayette’s Scott McAvoy (men’s lacrosse) each received the Patriot League Award of Outstanding Leader-ship and Character.

*Lehigh’s Maura Henderson (women’s track and field/cross country) and Holy Cross’s Yuji Callahan (men’s soccer) were named the League’s Sports-manship Award winners.

*American’s Emily Kinneston (Women’s Basketball) was the League’s nominee for the NCAA Woman of the Year award.

*Navy’s Stephen Born (Baseball) and Shawn Anderson (Men’s Basketball) were both named to the Senior CLASS Award first team, while Army West Point’s Luke Morrison (Men’s Basketball) was placed on the second team.

*Navy won the Patriot League Presidents’ Cup for the fifth-straight time and sixth in the last seven years.

*Navy swept the men’s and women’s President’s Cup Titles, the 11th time the feat has been accomplished since 1990-91 and the first since Bucknell achieved the honor in 2010-11.

*Navy and Loyola Maryland both qualified for the 2018 NCAA Women’s Lacrosse Championships, marking the first time the League received two bids to the tournament. The Mids and Greyhounds both won their first-round matchups, with Navy advancing to the quarterfinals before falling to defending national champion No. 1 Maryland.

*In 2017, Lehigh football RB Dominic Bragalone became the 13th player in League history to be named Consensus All-American.

*Fordham RB Chase Edmonds, the League’s all-time leading rusher, be-came the second Patriot League football player in the last two seasons to be selected in the NFL Draft when he went in the 4th round (134th overall) to the Arizona Cardinals.

*Also winning NCAA Tournament contests in 2017-18 were Colgate men’s soccer, Boston University field hockey, Army West Point baseball, combining with Navy and Loyola Maryland women’s lacrosse for seven tournament victories.

*Bucknell junior punter Alex Pechin made the 2017 FCS ADA Academic All-Star team, along with teammate and senior linebacker Mark Pyles. Fordham senior defensive lineman Jonathan Dimon and Lafayette junior defensive lineman Andrew Chuma rounded out the Patriot League selec-tions.

*24 Patriot Leaguers were All-America selections, with first-team status for Lehigh’s Dom Bragalone (Football), Boston University’s Ally Hammel (Field Hockey), Loyola Maryland’s Pat Spencer and Foster Huggins (Men’s Lacrosse) and Navy’s Jenna Collins (Women’s Lacrosse).

*Five Patriot Leaguers were selected in the Major League Lacrosse (MLL) Draft, Bucknell RHP Connor Van Hoose was taken in the Major League Baseball (MLB) First-Year Player Draft and Colgate midfielder Jared Stroud was taken in the Major League Soccer (MLS) SuperDraft.
