Terrafugia: The Flying Car by Ian B

The pictures above are of a new car coming out sometime

this summer or so, and get this: it turns into an airplane! It’s

not a transformer, it’s not a prototype, it’s real.

It’s the Terrifugia!

The Terrifugia, as I said, is a new car that is actually coming

out soon, and it turns into an airplane! It may look odd driv-

ing down the road or sitting in your driveway, but once you

get to the airport, the wings unfold and you take off! This

could be the future of personal airplanes. And it’s only

about $200,000! That’s less than a Lamborghini or a Ferrari!

And $10,000 of that $200,000 is for something called

“airframe reservation”. It requires you to go through a vir-

tual flying course before actually flying, but it would be

worth it.

Well, this new piece of amazing technology has been

dreamed up by adults M.I.T. Aeronautical Engineers who

also happen to be pilots (what else?!) and children alike,

and now it’s real, and I just have one thing to say… THIS

SHALL BE MY FIRST CAR!!! Check out the website at

http://www.terrafugia.com/

OMG! My Grandparents R My BFF! By Molly Baker, Wall Street Journal/May 9, 2011 http://www.pewinternet.org/Media-Mentions/2011/My-Grandparents-R-My-BFF.aspx According to the Pew Internet Research website posted above this is a new trend! “[...] Certainly, it's nothing new that kids are plugging in and staying

connected. But what is new is that it

may be a grandparent on the other

end of that virtual tin can—and that

technology is bridging the vast age

and distance gap that has long di-

vided the generations. "A group of

us was having dinner, and one

woman had to tell her husband to

put his iPod Touch away. He was

emailing his grandchildren," says

Mary Henderer, a Wilmington, Del.,

grandmother of four.

It's a perfect storm of demographics

and technology.

As a group, grandparents and

grandchildren have plenty in com-

mon. They have free time, dispos-

able income for gadgets and giz-

mos, and a keen interest in staying

in touch with people.

Mary Madden, senior research spe-

cialist with the Pew Research Cen-

ter, says: "The most powerful force

convincing them to take the

plunge...is their families. Especially

when it comes to their grandchil-

dren, they do not want to be left out

of the loop." Check it out online!

Book Review

“The River” by Gary Paulson

by Mason T

You’ve all read “Hatchet” at some point, whether it was this year, last year, or the year

before last. Well, Gary Paulson thought it was so good himself, that it deserved a se-

quel… six sequels to be exact! This is the second book in the series of books that began

with Brian’s first adventure in “Hatchet”, and after I read it, I knew I had to tell everyone

about it.

In this book, Brian is asked by a man named Derek Holtzer, a psychologist from an sur-

vivalist institution, comes to Brian and asks him for a favor; he wants him to do it all

again. Yes, he wants his to be stranded in the woods again, for just as long as before,

just so Derek can take notes on his psychological state. And you know what? Brian is

going to do it. He convinces his mother that he can take care of himself out there, and

that its to help other people that may someday be in his same situation. So, after lots of

planning, Brian and Derek set off (in a bushplane, no doubt) to a remote place in the

woods in whence he can relive his 54-day survival experience. Once they got there,

Brian made them leave all the equipment in the plane, except the emergency transmit-

ter. So, they would be roughing it.

Derek, who came with him on this expedition, followed him around taking notes on

what he was thinking. Brian taught him about what he learned about the wilderness. The

first night was rough, they didn’t have a good shelter, it was raining and they were be-

ing swarmed by those pesky mosquitoes! The next day they build a new shelter and a

fire, and not a single drop of rain or a single mosquito got in. But it all turned out to be

for nothing.

It was a huge storm, wind blowing, lightning cracking, thunder booming. And then, in

the middle of the night, a large burst of lightning woke them up. Derek reached for the

emergency transmitter, and Brian screamed for him to get down, but he couldn’t get his

voice to project over the thunder and wind. And then, in a split second, a bolt of light-

ning shot down a tree, into the emergency transmitter, and right up Derek’s arm.

You’ll have to read the book to find out what happens next! Also, after reading this

one, the next three books are “Brian’s Winter”, “Brian’s Hunt”, and “Brian’s Return”. I

haven’t read those ones yet, but I’m in the process! I’ll try to write reviews on those as

soon as I read them.

Remember that all books

are due 20th of May.

NUMS Mock Trial Brings Home

Awards The North Union Middle School Mock Trial team recently competed in a

statewide competition at the Ohio Supreme Court Building in Columbus, Ohio.

Thirty six teams competed from across the state. North Union received a rating

of Outstanding and garnered three out of the four individual awards from the

competition.

The competition case was The State of Rhode Island vs. Charlotte Doyle which was based on the young adult novel –The True Confessions of Charlotte

Doyle by Avi. The case was a hearing to decide if there was enough evidence

to charge Miss Doyle with the murder of Mr. Hollybrass. The story takes place

on a sailing ship in the 1800’s, 13 year old Charlotte is made to sail as the only

passenger on a ship where the crew is planning to mutiny against the captain

who is a cruel man. She gets caught in the middle of the violence and when the

first mate, Mr. Hollybrass, is found dead, everyone thinks she did it.

Students competed by playing roles of attorneys or witnesses and following

authentic court procedures including being judged by real attorneys and

judges in the competition. During each trial session an Outstanding Attorney

and an Outstanding Witness is awarded to the people that had the highest

quality performance overall. North Union students won three of these awards.

Morgan Adkins and Courtney Thompson were named Outstanding Attorneys

and Patricia Huffman was named Outstanding Witness. The Middle School

Mock Trial team is coached by 8th Grade Social Studies teacher, Mrs. Barb Ad-

Horoscope By: Lindsay H

If your birthday is between April 21-

May 21 you are a Taurus. There may be un-

usual revelations within your group this

Month. Higher realities pour down on them.

Into you, too. You can also expect a complete

revolution in your hopes and expectations.

You will hear something and then rapidly

change course. You'll resist all pressure and

will either be challenged or seek a new one.

Your mood is apt to be more serious today

than yesterday, but refrain from giving into

discontentment or doom and gloom. It might

be wiser for you and a coworker to agree to

disagree rather than arguing and debating

and just going around in circles. You and a

relative might not be in accord, perhaps dis-

agreeing about a petty task that one of you

should have completed. Instead of becoming

bogged down in who was right or wrong, re-

solve the issue calmly and quickly to lessen

the chance of a lingering argument develop-

ing. Call an old friend or a grandparent if you

need advice that a parent cannot supply. Your

lucky Flowers are Rose, Poppies, Violets, and

Foxgloves. You’re lucky colors are Blue for

stamina and perseverance and Pinks and pas-

tels for love and amber for friendship. Your

ruling planet is Venus and it promotes love,

peace, and harmony. Lucky birthstone is an

Emerald. Lucky Metal is Copper. Lucky

Numbers are 2, 11, and 20, Lucky Time of the

The movie review is about the movie Rio. This movie is

about a misfit macaw named Blu (voice of Jesse

Eisenberg) heads to Rio de Janeiro, embarks on a mag-

nificent journey, and makes some loyal new friends in

this animated adventure for the entire family. Domesti-

cated from the time he was just a hatchling, Blu traded a

life in the clouds for a contented existence in Moose

Lake with his doting owner, Linda (Leslie Mann). They

live under the impression that Blu is the last of his kind,

but upon receiving word that a female macaw named

Jewel (Anne Hathaway) has been discovered in Rio de

Janeiro, Linda and Blu set their sights on South America

on a mission to replenish the species. Shortly after their

arrival in the Brazilian capitol, however, the two rare

birds fall victim to a gang of greedy animal smugglers

intent on making a mint by selling Blu and Jewel to the

highest bidder. But the headstrong Jewel isn't about to

be locked in a cage and put on display, so when the op-

portunity arises she stages a daring escape with the help

of some wisecracking local birds, and takes her new

friend Blu along for the ride. With the bumbling birdnap-

pers fast closing in, Blu realizes that his only hope for

making a clean getaway and reuniting with Linda is to

finally summon the courage he needs to take flight. Rio

also features the voices of Tracy Morgan, Jamie Foxx,

George Lopez, and will.i.am. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Tired of water guns not shotting far enough, or the water not reaching your

opponent before it evaporates? Tired of Nerf, having to always pick up bullets?

Too wimpy for airsoft or paintball wars? Then this is the water gun for you! The

Xploderz shoots water, but it shoots it in little balls. So, you shoot, and it does-

n’t explode until it hits the person you shot at (or something else *Sorry, Mrs

Dumbrowski! I didn’t mean to shoot your cat!*)

The Xploderz is available at most toy stores, ranging from $13-$40.

shoots of rounds like a machine gun.

B-Membrane Laptop/Desktop

The B-Membrane is a futuristic laptop (or desk-

top) that has a projector on the front, which

projects your computer screen onto a wall or

another flat surface, and then a holographic

touch-activated mouse and trackpad. Could

this be the future of PC technology?

iCool by Alexey Dmetriev

The iCool concept is a fridge on which one of

the doors is a touch screen. It is said that from

that screen, you can access Facebook, a calen-

dar, stocks, apps… basically is a giant iPod

Touch used as a refrigerator door.

Vivid Notes

Vivid notes is a touch screen “notebook” that

saves everything you write on it’s hard drive.

You can write or even draw on the surface, so

you can take notes, and then with the drawing

feature, draw that pie chart that goes along

with them.

GO GREEN!!!

By Mason T.

It’s not that hard to go green! You don’t have to do a huge

project like plant 100 trees or use every solar-powered

and recyclable product out there to make a difference.

You can recycle, save energy by turning off lights when

you’re not using them, save water by turning off the faucet

while your brushing your teeth… things like that.

Also, there are lots of ways , it's to make it fun and cool!

Like using reusable bottles like the ones below, or putting

a plastic hoop over your recycle bin, so you can try to get

Technology Review By: Mason T.Technology Review By: Mason T.Technology Review By: Mason T.

Hello everybody, this is Mason. This month, I’m

going to review 2 new-fangled pieces of technology. So,

here you go!

Nintendo 3DS

The Nintendo 3DS is the brand new DS coming out, and as

you can probably tell by it’s name, IT’S 3D!!! This is the first

3D handheld device available to the public, let alone the

first 3D device for 3D glasses not to be needed! Some of

the first great games of the “3-demensional revolution”, as

I like to call it, would consist of Rayman 3D, Super Monkey

Ball 3D, Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Shadow Wars, Resident

Evil: Mercenaries-3D, Nintendogs + Cats: Golden Retriever

and New Friends, and lots more. The Nintendo 3DS is $250

on http://www.amazon.com/, but I couldn’t find another

website (that isn’t blocked by the school) selling one.

Alienware M15X

The Alienware M11X laptop is a great laptop made for

gaming, but it’s good for school work and personal use,

too. So, you can play Minecraft at the same tim as you write

a paper about the American Revolution. One of the coolest

features about this laptop is that you can change the color

of the laptop’s lights. Whenever it’s on, it glows a certain

color. There is a tool on the computer that lets you change

that color! So cool! Now you don’t have to decide what

color to get and then get tired of it later. The Alienware

M11X is $1,200 on

Is there a song that is mine

Love, love, love

Are tears the beginning or end

the destination that matters?

Love, love, love

Is the magic in everyone of us?

And do we have the power to

give or take it away?

Love, love, love

Where is the me I was?

And why did I change?

Is anything always?

Love, love, love

If the earth is our home can we

Must we leave to know what we
