from PayItSimple USA. Neither PayItSimple nor participating merchants assume any credit risk.

Cardholders make their decision to utilize installment payments, including how many months for full pay back, before the transaction is sent for

authorization by PayItSimple. Neither PayItSimple nor the

merchant assesses any finance charge for the installment payment plan.

After receiving approval from the Visa or MasterCard issuer for the entire amount, PayItSimple subsequently contacts the issuer, advising it to bill the cardholder only for the first installment amount.

Visa and MasterCard credit card authorizations stay in effect for up to 30 days. PayItSimple’s platform will contact the card issuer toward the end of that time to request a new authorization and to bill for the second installment payment. That process continues each month until the final installment has posted to the cardholder’s account.

If a consumer pays for all other purchases on their credit card account in full every month, including the installment amount, they will pay no finance charge to their issuer for the installment purchase. If the consumer makes the installment payment while already in the revolving payment cycle, or

enters the cycle at any point, they will pay whatever finance charge rate their issuer assesses for all other revolving charges.

Merchants stand to gain new sales as well as upgrades to bigger ticket items by offering installment payments because consumers can buy products and services that were likely unaffordable if payment in full were required up front or if they had to pay finance charges on the items.

Merchants do not pay any set up or monthly fee for PayItSimple. They do pay a per-transaction fee to PayItSimple on top of the fee they pay card issuers.

PayItSimple never holds any money from the installment payments. Its platform merely sends requests to the issuers.

PayItSimple owns two U.S. patents on its process and has patents pending in Europe. The company, which was founded in Israel, has received $4.3 million in angel funding and is

working on a $10 million round of venture funding. U.S. acquirers and gateways already signed to

participate with PayItSimple, including offering it to their merchants, include Visa-owned Authorize.net, Chase Paymentech, Elavon, First Data, Global Payments, Heartland, TSYS, and WorldPay. By year-end 2014 another 30 payment gateways are expected to have committed to PayItSimple.Stacy Fassberg is VP of Marketing at PayItSimple USA

Both companies link to mobile network operators and landline carriers to provide consumers

with a payment option for buying virtual items (games) and digital goods (music, video). The Boku/Mopay combination creates an even bigger footprint for Boku. It was already the largest carrier biller based on the number of consumers it reaches and the number of countries in which it can operate. Through a combination of direct links to carriers and connections through

telecom industry aggregators, Boku can reach more than 4 billion consumers in more than 80 countries.

Competing carrier-billing companies include Zong (owned by PayPal), Danal, Bango, and Fortumo.

Merchants that use carrier billing tend to be large enterprises. Boku’s merchant clients include Facebook, Electronic Arts, Sony, and Spotify. Mopay’s client list is complementary and features top game publishers. In business since 2000, Mopay handles more than 5 million payments monthly.

New merchants are signed by Boku and Mopay through direct sales efforts and partnerships with third parties including card payment gateways.

Carrier billing appeals to consumers who don’t have a card account or who are reluctant to use a card for online purchases. Top markets for carrier billing are Japan, Korea, Germany, and Scandinavia. Carriers set per-transaction and monthly spending limits in the $200 range. Single purchases range up to $50. Carriers assume all credit risk.

Sellers of virtual and digital goods remain a growth market for carrier billers. The newest opportunity is in physical goods including tickets, vending, and magazine subscriptions.

Boku has a one-click service for payments from mobile devices. It is also the first carrier biller to obtain an e-money license in the European Union, which it plans to use for selling physical

which takes time and money. Allynis Trusted Services Hub from Gemalto is a turnkey service that lets financial institutions as well as transport operators,

digital service providers, and others securely deploy their apps using a single connection to

Gemalto to reach more than 40 MNOs worldwide. There is no need to have contractual relationships with individual MNOs.

More than 30 financial institutions, transit operators, and others already link to the hub including American Express, Orange, Vodafone, NTT Docomo, and Softcard (formerly Isis).

Multinational companies in particular benefit from Allynis, which creates economies of scale that can be passed on to users.

Over 1.5 billion mobile users worldwide are covered by Gemalto’s contracts with MNOs, and more than 100 million SIM cards have already received application credentials from the hub, which operates

from platforms in France, the U.S., and Singapore. Gemalto earns revenue on a per-user and per-service basis.

Allynis can handle future configurations including Embedded Secure Elements (eSE), which are becoming available in some handsets, and Trusted Execution Environment (TEE) hardware/software systems, which will be running inside next-generation mobile devices.

The hub, which is operated from Gemalto’s certified, secure data centers, also supports the provisioning of tokens within EMVCo Payment Tokenization Specifications.

among others. Breaches involving U.S. entities accounted for 48.7% of all incidents but had a 66.5% share of the 822 million records that were exposed

including records for payment cards, email addresses,

login credentials, social security numbers, and other personal information.

The number of breaches discovered by year-end is expected to be higher than last year. Events already reported in the U.S. alone have involved JPMorgan Chase, Target, Home Depot, Kmart, and Dairy Queen.

The steady stream of revelations involving breaches of merchants’ databases have accelerated the efforts of acquirers, processors, and gateway providers to significantly diminish the degree to which their card data is exposed at the point of sale, particularly at outlets owned by large and midsized merchants. The term being used for remediating exposure is “out of scope” as applied to PCI DSS compliance.

Some vendors offer a partial service, which can include offering only encryption or only tokenization at the point of sale. A third option is hosting a Web page for e-commerce.

Heartland, the fifth largest U.S. acquirer based on transactions processed, is the most aggressive company when it comes to pursuing out-of-scope acquiring. It markets a comprehensive payment card data-protection program that involves encryption, EMV terminals, and tokenization, believing that no part of the process should be left exposed.

Heartland’s program, called Heartland Secure, encrypts all card data immediately at no extra cost to its merchants. Participating merchants are also given a warranty against expenses incurred from a data breach. MasterCard has deployed Heartland Secure in its cafeterias.

Heartland Secure includes an encrypting read head for both mag-stripe and EMV chip card transactions. EMV transactions need to be encrypted because EMVCo and card network specifications allow for card data to be sent in the clear to the merchant or acquirer CPU that communicates with the POS terminal.

Heartland encryption technology can cover payments made at terminals as well as those initiated by a Web browser whether initiated by a swipe, insert,

tap, or key entry. So far, 82,000 EMV chip and/or mag-stripe card readers in the U.S. use Heartland’s E3 end-to-end encryption

service. Heartland says E3 can reduce a merchant’s PCI-compliance costs by up to 73%.

Heartland Secure’s token service substitutes a token for the payment card’s account number —16 digits to match the number of digits in Visa, MasterCard, or Discover primary account numbers and 15 digits to match American Express. Merchants can store the token rather than the active personal account. Tokenization reduces the number of system components for which PCI DSS requirements apply.

Once large and midsized merchants embrace EMV, encryption, and tokenization, a shrinking number will be the target of fraudsters.Robert Carr is CEO at Heartland in Princeton, New

Point-of-sale transactions will be NFC-based. Maestro card account details will be stored in the embedded Secure Element (SE) of participating Samsung Galaxy S4 and Note 3 phones. Over-the-air provisioning of card account details to the SE will be provided by Giesecke & Devrient.

About 106,000 of Rabobank’s customers use S4 and Note 3 phones, representing 1.5% of its 7.1 million Maestro card customers.

Rabobank expects Rabo Wallet to drive NFC-based terminal adoption among the 56,000+ merchants in the Netherlands with which it owns card-processing contracts. Between 11% and 13% of the 300,000 POS terminals in the Netherlands are equipped to accept NFC payments right now. Rabobank merchant card processing contracts cover nearly half of the country’s terminal base.

Merchants will be offered discounts on processing fees if they upgrade. NFC-based terminals will automatically be provided to newly signed

merchants and to those who renew contracts.

Most payments made using

the Rabo Wallet will be for

purchases below $32 (€25) and

will not require a PIN. Samsung currently holds

around 60% of the market of new phones sold in the Netherlands. However its newest device, the S5, does not include an SE. With Secure Element-based mobile payments uncertain for future Samsung devices, Rabobank is looking at cloud-based technology such as Host Card Emulation software to sidestep the problem of relying on hardware controlled by either smartphone

manufacturers or mobile network operators. Michiel Helmer is Senior Product

Visa Europe will launch with one client in the U.K. in the fourth quarter

of this year. EDO will replicate in Europe most of what it does in the U.S., including linking servers to Visa Europe’s network, but there will be a significant difference. In the U.S.,

EDO signs both the issuers and the merchants. In Europe, Visa Europe will handle both of those jobs. Essentially, EDO is providing its platform to Visa

Cards issued by financial institution members of Visa Europe generate over 15% of all personal consumption expenditures in Europe measured against all other payment cards, cash, and checks. Rabobank was initially involved in a joint venture called Sixpack that involved two bank competitors, ABN Amro and ING, and three mobile network operators (MNOs) — KPN, Vodafone, and T-Mobile. Sixpack aimed to deploy NFC wallets that used SIMs to store payment card credentials. That project was abandoned in the second quarter of 2012, and Rabobank was not able to reach an agreement with any of the MNOs regarding access to the SIMs they controlled on Android handsets. In response, the bank decided to partner with Samsung and store payment card credentials in the Secure Element controlled by the device manufacturer.Visa and mobile network operator Vodafone have had a global mobile payment partnership since 2012 in which prepaid card credentials are stored in a SIM. Their SmartPass service was launched in the Netherlands in March of this year. Wirecard is the Visa issuer.

merchants included both consumer and commercial credit, debit, and prepaid card products. Cards carried the UnionPay, Visa, MasterCard, American Express, JCB, Diners Club, and Maestro

brands. Also included in the rankings were domestic-only credit and debit card brands in India, Indonesia, the Philippines, South Korea, Taiwan, and Thailand.

The ranking of the general purpose card issuers was dominated by China, which placed 8 of the top 10. China had the highest purchase volume with $4.078 trillion. That spending came from 2.76 billion cards.

However, average annual spending per card was low at $1,477. Purchase volume on cards issued in China came overwhelmingly from the UnionPay network. It accounted for 89.2% of the

general purpose card purchase volume from the listed Chinese issuers.

Japan had 9 issuers on the top general purpose card list including 1 in the top 10. Purchase volume from Japanese issuers totaled $415.24 billion from 170.6 million cards. Average annual spending per card was $2,434.

South Korea had 10 issuers on the list. Purchase volume for those 10 amounted to $411.52 billion from 157.1 million cards. Average annual spending per card was $2,620.

Australia had 6 issuers on the list including 1 in the top 10. Purchase volume for those 6 amounted to $321.92 billion from 38.9 million cards. Average annual spending per card at $8,269 was the highest in the region.

Issuers from Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, New Zealand, the Philippines, Taiwan, and Thailand ranked on at least one of the three top 50 lists.

The 50 largest general purpose card issuers measured by only Visa and MasterCard purchase volume collectively generated $1.373 trillion in spending from 430.0 million cards. Issuers from China accounted for purchase volume of $439.23 billion from 122.4 million cards, followed by issuers from Japan with $337.28 billion from 135.0 million cards, issuers from

EDO operates on the Visa and MasterCard networks in the U.S. Of the top 10 U.S. bank card issuers, 6 use its service. They can give their cardholders access to offers from 1,000 retailers.

Merchants want to find new customers and connect to the EDO platform where they use advertising funds to subsidize discounts in the 20% range to targeted prospects.

EDO’s data analytics engine enables merchants to target cardholders who fit the profile they seek based on their prior spending. With the right offer, those cardholders tend to generate larger than average purchase amounts. In large part because EDO’s platform generates offers that are relevant.

Part of the merchant’s advertising funds are used by EDO for marketing support. Merchants can receive help with product selection, budgets,

and goals, as well as choice of artwork and other marketing materials. When a campaign is in progress, EDO tracks its performance, which lets merchants modify their offers.

EDO offers are connected directly to a consumer’s credit or debit card. Consumers receive offers online

TransFirst has been owned by another private equity firm, Welsh Carson Anderson & Stowe (WCAS), since 2007.

TransFirst handles card and other payments from more than 200,000 merchants. Almost all merchants are small to midsized.

Last year TransFirst handled 465 million payment card transactions valued at $48 billion. Among nonbank acquirers in the U.S., TransFirst is seventh largest.

Other investments made by Vista Equity Partners in

the payment industry include Misys Financial Software, which purchased Custom Credit Systems and IND Group earlier this year.

Once the TransFirst sale is completed, WCAS will be out of the payment industry. It had previously sold various other

payment industry investments via private transactions including Alliance Data Systems, Card Establishment Services, Comdata,

GlobalCollect, Harbridge Merchant Services, and Ruesch

International. Paycom Software was sold by WCAS through an initial public offering.

As a result of these sales, including those scheduled to be completed, WCAS will have distributed to its investors $5.82

for every $1.00 of capital called since January 1, 2013.
