Learning Objectives:

1. The participant will be able to list at least three theories for the growing epidemic of obesity;

2. The participant will be able to provide information to their patients regarding treatment options for morbid obesity.

3. The participant will be able to incorporate at least one bariatric equipment or adaptive equipment device in their practice to increase safety and ease of management of morbidly obese patients with lymphedema.

4. Finally, the participant will be able to utilize at least one new technique discussed and demonstrated in the case studies in their own practice.

8:15 – 9:15 a.m. The science, epidemiology, and socio-economics of obesity

9:15 – 9:30 a.m. Break

9:30 – 10:30 a.m. Clinical approaches to the morbidly obese; equipment and attitudes to deal with the obese.

10:30 – 10:45 a.m. Break

10:45 – 11:45 a.m. Three case histories for discussion

11:45 – 12:30 p.m. Question and Answers

Paula J.Stewart MD,CLT-LANA

Dr. Stewart is a physiatrist trained at the Mayo Clinic. She established a lymphedema clinic in Charlotte, NC, in 1992, which grew to be the second largest on the Eastern seaboard. In 1999 she was a co-founder of LANA (the Lymphology Association of North America), a certification organization for lymphedema therapists. She has also served on the NLN MAC for many years and has contributed to the Lymph Link many times. She is a stakeholder in the ALFP (American Lymphedema Framework Project). Recently she published a book “One Hundred Questions about Lymphedema” with coauthors Saskia Thiadens and Nicole Stout. Dr. Stewart cur-rently serves as the Medical Director of the Lakeshore Rehabilitation Hospital in Birmingham, Al.
