Van Rensburg added it is believed that they work for a syndicate and follow a specific modus operandi. “They gain entry to the premises under false pretences and then over- power whoever they need to in order to get their hands on the goods.” Their arrest follows a house rob- bery at 9am on August 22 in Wester- ing. The house robbery was reported to the Kabega Park Police Station. Later the same day, officers re- ceived information that people were trying to sell suspected stolen goods in Cape Road close to the Five Ways Spar. “The two people who were al- legedly trying to buy the goods, were also arrested and appeared in court. They were each released on R1 000 bail,” said Van Rensburg. The detectives also recovered the stolen goods. “After this more information came to light that the suspects were mak- ing use of Bed and Breakfast estab- lishments from where they allegedly operate. “They will book the accommoda- tion in advance and pay with cash upfront. They meet in the rooms but do not sleep there.” Van Rensburg added these sus- pects did not only make use of Bed and Breakfasts, but they also operat- ed from various hotels in the city. “I cannot mention any specific hotels as they have been operating through- out the entire city.” Again the police followed up fur- ther leads and eventually the four men were apprehended. “They were positively linked to the robbery in Westering. According to Janse van Rensburg, it is alleged that the same suspects can also be linked to house robbery cases in the Humewood, Mount Road, Walmer and Kabega Park po- licing areas. According to the investigating of- ficer these suspects are allegedly also involved in other crimes including motorvehicle theft and burglaries. The police believe the robbers are contacted by people who basically “place an order” for the goods they want. The robbers would then set out on their robbery missions. “We aim to arrest the people who are buying these goods because if there is no demand, there will be no syndicate. “We are expecting to make more arrests soon.” The Eastern Cape Provincial Com- missioner, Lieutenant General Celi- we Binta, applauded Kabega Park de- tectives, who worked around the clock to apprehend the suspects. Celiwa said, “We shall continual- ly, without fail, urge our communi- ties and second-hand dealers to re- frain from buying stolen goods. It cannot be a normal situation that while some people work very hard to better their lives, others would as- sume that they can easily get what does not rightfully belong to them.”

Dagwoods robbed . . . again!

Study shows shortfalls in metro’srefuse system

CLARISSA VENTER

THE popular Dagwoods Pub and Diner inMill Park was robbed for a fourth time in atime span of only four months.

Three armed robbers overpowered the seniormanager of the restaurant, Glenn Taylor, justbefore 9am on Friday, August 26.

He was attacked by the men, one armed witha knife and the other two both with firearms.Taylor was sprayed with pepperspray and theowner, Graig Conroy, who was with Taylor atthe time, was hit in the face with a full bottleof wine.

According to Shaun Lindsey, who is the gen-eral manager, a laptop, a cell phone, an undis-closed amount of cash and a substantial amountof expensive alcohol was stolen.

The suspects also fled in a Dagwoods’ van andapparently jumped into a white taxi and fled af-ter abandoning the vehicle in Sydenham, whichthe police found later the same day.

This is the fourth robbery in four consecutivemonths. The diner was first targeted in April.

According to the Atlas Weekly Crime News-letter, Conroy reported that these were the samesuspects who had robbed him during a previousincident in July.

Lindsey said Taylor was in the shop duringall four robberies. “Glenn and Graig are bothfine. Graig is going on leave on Monday as heneeds a bit of a holiday though.”

He added during each robbery they were tar-geted shortly after opening up shop in the morn-ing.

“The suspects know exactly what they wantand they are very professional. The fact that wealso use the back door while opening the restau-rant is another concern because no one can seewhat is happening in the enclosed alley.

Lindsey said they have now appointed securi-ty guards to keep an eye 24 hours a day and thata security company will be present at all timeswhen they open and close the restaurant.

Earlier police spokesperson, Alwin Labans, said they were following up leads.

Bushy Park Dairy closes its doorsVERA SCHOEMAN

The end of an era and a sad day for BushyPark Farm Dairy’s 71 workers who recent-ly went to work for the very last time.

The dairy on the Seaview Road oficiallyclosed its doors after rumours to this effecthave been doing the rounds since May.

“We are just wrapping up the last de-tails. It’s an emotional affair for all of us.

“Some of the people have found otheremployment, but most of them haven’t. Idont have any plans yet,” said Mr PufferHartzenberg, managing trustee.

According to him the milk cows have al-ready been relocated to their new homenear Louis Trichardt.

They will be supplying milk to LimpopoDairies.

Hartzenberg said in an earlier interviewthat rising costs, especially that of electric-ity, water and taxes, gradually killed thedairy.

They also had to compete with prices ofstate-subsidised dairies in East London.

“I can honestly say that we’ve done eve-rything possible to prevent this predica-ment, but it simply wasn’t possible.

“We put the process on hold until it be-came impossible.”

After news of the probable shut down, members of the public started a Facebookgroup in support of the dairy, but to no ef-fect. Hartzenberg said some of the beef cat-tle will be kept on the farm.

HELGA VAN STAADEN

Unlawful rubbish dumping in the NelsonMandela Metro is not due to a dysfunctionalrefuse management process, but is sympto-matic of a number of shortfalls, a recent studyshowed.

The study found that people use illegaldumping sites not only for building rubble, but also for domestic refuse.

To prevent this, Riaan le Roux, who con-ducted the study, recommended at a recentmeeting of the public health committee, thatconstruction companies, contracted by themunicipality, must show receipts of havingdumped building rubble at legitimate dump-ing sites.

If they are unable to show such receipts, themunicipality must withold payment for theirservices.

Other suggestions by Le Roux include a cen-

tralised unit within the directorate of publichealth focusing on illicit refuse-dumping.

The study was done to determine the causeof unlawful refuse-dumping and to find waysto put corrective measures in place.

Although the implementation of the long-term strategy will cost R115 million, there isa short-term plan which can be implementedimmediately.

This strategy includes an awareness cam-paign and frequent domestic refuse removalfrom poorer areas.

Le Roux said the police and the metro’s traf-fic and security officials should also assistwith monitoring and preventing unlawfulrefuse-dumping. The municipality’s 600closed circuit cameras could also be put to bet-ter use to prevent illicit dumping.

The current fine of R500 for unlawfulrefuse-dumping is not sufficient as deterrentand should be raised to R2 000, said Le Roux. All sugggestions were approved.

SASSA Satellite Office opens in LorraineTANYA VAN ZYL

THERE is some good news for resi-dents who receive a monthly pen-sion, disability- or child grant andwho have to wait in queues forhours every month to be helped.

A Satellite Office of the South Afri-can Social Security Agency (SASSA)opened in Lorraine last week, whichwill serve theWesternSuburbs ofPortElizabeth.

This is thanks to Gustav Rauten-bach, DA Councillor for Ward 8, whohas been campaigning for more thana year to open a Satellite Office in thisward.

His hard work finally paid off whenSASSA officials assisted 15 people

with their applications last Tuesday. The Satellite Office is situated at theStorehouse New Covenant Church, onthe corner of Vitry Avenue and Mo-selle Street in Lorraine.

“I am extremely excited about thisnewdevelopment and I think it iswon-derful that after more than a year, thishas finally been realised,” Rauten-bach said.

The service will be rendered once aweek on a Tuesday from 9am to 1pm,but should the demand grow and theSatellite Office be well supported, Ra-utenbach said, the service will be ex-tended to more days.

He said the idea of a Satellite Officecame when he realised there was anincreasing demand for this service inthe Western Suburbs.

“Residents came to my office asking

why there was not an SASSA office inthis area. Most of them either go to theoffices in New Brighton or GovanMbeki, which is very far for them totravel,” he explained.

That is why he felt obliged to estab-lish an office for the Western and eventhe Southern suburbs.

In turn Reverend Glenn Weiss fromthe Storehouse Church offered spacein his church at no charge to host theSASSA officials.

“It is a service we felt we needed tobring to this community,” Weiss said.

Both he and Rautenbach were im-pressed with the number of peoplewho turned out on the first day and be-lieve that more people will soon makeuse of this Office.

For more information, phone Rau-tenbach’s office at 0 041 368 7008.

“Vir my is hynie anders nie. Hy wil ook met Bar-ney speel en moet ook bad, eet enslaap soos ander kinders.

Passion to inspire otherwomen produces book

ZELDRÉ SWANEPOEL

“THE power of honesty, blessingsand positive thinking does knowyour name.”

These are words to live by forAshere-Dee Adams, who has justfounded an empowerment companyfor women, called Butterfly Diva. This forms part of this one woman’spassion to help other women live lifeto the fullest.

With the launch of her companyshe also wrote a pocket-size inspira-tional book called Inspirational De-lights to Embrace Yourself.

After her son fell ill she resignedfrom her job and became a full-timemom.

“The process of being a full-timemom brought with it a transforma-tion in me whereby I had to look atmyself candidly, my future and mylife as a mother and wife. As well ashaving to realise my dream. My pas-sion haunted me day and night andI finally mustered up the courage to

register my company in October 2010and the name Butterfly Diva wasborn.”

Butterfly Diva, she says, is aboutassisting other women, in a sisterlyfashion, to look at life differently andto learn how to embrace the womenthey were born to be.

Because she had limited resourc-es, Adams started out using socialnetworking outlets such as Face-book, Twitter and blogging to spreadher message through inspirationalarticles.

“Then with this nagging desire todisplay my love for creative writingand provide women with tangibleways to work on themselves – a poc-ket-size booklet about things thathelped me get to the space I am now,Inspirational Delights to EmbraceYourself, came to life.”

With minimal resources she edit-ed, designed and self-published thebook.

“The overall message of my bookis that everyone has the capacity tolive her life to the fullest with love, bliss and fullness. We all have our is-

sues to deal with from family, to fi-nance, to holding the perfect rela-tionship or just to raising wonderfulkids and on top of that rediscoverourselves through working throughpast hurts, different dress sizes, hid-ing of our weaknesses and smilingthrough the process…it’s not easybut you can overcome it, one issue ata time. Start inspecting yourself re-garding your life and have the cour-age to start your journey of a thou-sand.”

“Writing this booklet made me re-alise that this was my cleansing pro-cess – like pulling the plug out of thebath to let out the dirty water andwatch it run out. I have been so bless-ed because I know this project had tohappen no matter what, and thedoors just swung open.”

Storm brewing over runoffWith all the rain that has fallenacross the country recently, it isnot surprising tohear fromaread-er who complains about the man-ner in which his neighbour di-verts stormwater run-off.

He writes that his neighbour hasmade numerous holes in theirshared boundary wall, divertingstormwater to the reader’s side.

The problem is exacerbated by thefact that the properties are on an in-cline, with the reader’s erf being thelower of the two.

The reader would like to knowwhether this practice is allowed and,if so, whether it is permissible for hisneighbour to deface the wall in thisway.

Charlotte Vermaak from ChasEveritt in Port Elizabeth says a gen-eral rule derived from common lawis applicable in this situation.

“The owner of a low-lying proper-ty is obliged to receive naturallyflowing water from a higher proper-ty.”

However, says Vermaak, this rule

does not give owners of higher-lyingproperties blanket consent to floodtheir neighbours’ gardens.

“The crux of the matter lies in theterm ‘naturally flowing’.”

Vermaak says a 1998 ruling by theSupreme Court of Appeal in the mat-ter of Williams versus Harris pro-vides further clarification.

“It was decided that the owner ofa lower-lying property is onlyobliged to accept ‘natural flow’, inother words, that which would haveoccurred before the properties weredeveloped.”

This decision places an obligationon the owner wishing to divert thestormwater to show that it wouldhave flowed onto the lower propertyeven if there were no buildings andthe ground contours had not been al-tered, says Vermaak.

“This is clearly a substantial onusand may call for expert assistance.”

According to Rian du Toit fromDTS Attorneys in PE, the reader’sneighbour could be obliged to at-tempt to divert the water elsewhere, such as into the street.

“This obligation may be imposedby the relevant provisions of thetown planning scheme that appliesin their area.”

Du Toit says a reasonable onus istherefore placed on the offendingneighbour to prove that it is not prac-tically possible to divert the wateraway from other properties and intoa public street, presumably withdrainage.

“Overall, it is very clear that ourreader does not simply have to toler-ate the situation his neighbour hascreated.”

He may choose to call out the rele-vant municipal authority to inspectthe situation and determine whetherhis neighbour is complying with lo-cal by-laws relating to stormwater, says Du Toit.

“Alternatively, if there are otherviable routes for diverting the run-off and his neighbour continues todisregard these, he could elect to takelegal action.”

Pearson’s young rugby team celebratesunbeaten season

TANYA VAN ZYL

THE St Dominic’s Priory HighSchool recently made historyin their school when theyformed the school’s first rugbyteam.

The school offer sporting codesonly such as hockey, athletics, cricket, soccer, swimming andwaterpolo. But some of the boysfelt the need to play some rugbyand so The Saints rugby team wasformed.

Only 11 boys joined The Saintsrugby team, meaning there werenot enough players to fill a rugbyteam. So Priory was determinedto find more players.

“We approached St George’sCollege and asked them to join inon the rugby action,” Laura Gil-lies, spokesperson of Priory, said.

Whilst awaiting a reply from StGeorge’s, the Priory Sevens teamtook on a team from DF MalherbeHigh School in a warm-up match.Priory lost this match with 27 - 0.

On a Saturday afternoon Priorypractice session, the boys werepleasantly surprised when 7 boysfrom St George’s showed up to joinThe Saints rugby team.

“We are still looking to build on-to our team, but The Saints willlook at taking on any obstacle thatwishes to meet us!” Gillies said.

In the meantime, the Saintsplayed Grey High School’s u/15Eteam and lost 26-22, they lost 22-12to their u/15D/E team and wonwith 21-17 to the same team on adifferent occasion.

According to coach, Clinton Ed-wards, the idea is next year to ap-proach non-traditional schoolssuch as Theodor Herzl, Brylin andSt Marks – who do not offer rugbyas sport – to join them in playingrugby.

Talking F1: ‘The Cathedral of Speed’NATALIE LE CLUE

IT is the fastest track with the mosthistory, where Formula 1 historycomes to life. It can only be the Auto-dromo di Monza.

It may not be the most physicallydemanding racing circuit on the cal-endar; but it is one of the most pas-sionate racing venues in the world. As such, Monza makes its appear-ance as the 13th round of the 2011championship.

As the circuit with the highest av-erage speed of the season and with83% of the lap spent at full throttle, engine performance becomes evermore important for qualifying andthe race. The other major focus falls

on aerodynamic efficiency. The lowlevel of downforce required aroundMonza is so unique that it promptsteams to bring a specially designed,low-downforce, rear wing to the Ital-ian GP.

Given the low levels of rear down-force on the cars it invariably meansthat while a decent straight linespeed will be achieved the stabilityof the car, particularly under accel-eration, is far less than normal. Thismakes corners such as Parabolica(turn eleven) all the more treacher-ous, as getting on the throttle just asplit second too early can result in atrip through the gravel trap.

The Drag Reduction System is ex-pected to create its own fireworksthis weekend. It may very well be a

return to the famous ‘slipstreamer’races of the past as the FIA has allo-cated two separate DRS zones for theItalian grand prix. The first will bealong the ‘back straight’ into the Var-iante Ascari chicane (turn eight)with the second of the two zones be-ing situated on the start/finishstraight. Undoubtedly the followingcar will be afforded with a big advan-tage and could, possibly, shape theoutcome of the race.

“The first zone’s going to be inter-esting because it’s always been verytough to challenge for position underbraking for Ascari – the track’s pret-ty narrow and it’s a fast entry – so I’llbe really interested to see how wellDRS will work into that corner. Wemight see some pretty spectacular

moves!” said 2009 champion, JensonButton.

Two teams in particular shouldhave a stellar weekend at Monza, i.e.Ferrari and McLaren. Needless tosay any pace advantage that thesetwo teams may have this weekendneeds to be converted into some seri-ous world championship points. Foronce, Red Bull Racing will not be theout-and-out favourite going into arace. Their Renault engine has prov-en more than up to the task this sea-son, though in Monza it is unlikelyto trouble the top-end might of theMercedes or Ferrari engine.

A plus for the Ferrari team, keep-ing in mind their fanatical Tifosi, isthe expected weather forecast. Theprediction of warm temperature will

be music to the Scarlet team’s earswho have been struggling for the du-ration of the season with tyre tem-peratures.

Mercedes arrive at the last race inEurope after a solid outing in Spa.Their challenge may not threaten thetop 3 positions on merit. But if anyproblem should show itself amongstthe frontrunners, during the race,Mercedes are the team who will mostlikely be in a position to take full ad-vantage. Ferrari and McLaren arethe teams best suited for victory. Itis here that Fernando Alonso gainedvital momentum after thrilling thefanatical Tifosi with a win in 2010.It is here that any real challenge forthe 2011 driver’s crown has to kickinto high gear – pardon the pun.

This Sporting Life : by Michael Shafto

And here is . . . the good news!IT WAS a week to remember. Dripping withemotion, you might say. The Springboks off todefend theirRugbyWorldCup title inNewZea-land, with the best wishes of the country’s50 million people.

Sports Minister, Fikile Mabalula, warnedthem not to return without the Webb Ellis Cup.Did that mean if unsuccessful they should stayputandswell theKiwipopulationbyanother30?

At home some thrilling Currie Cup rugby, with the Lions putting welcome daylight be-tween themselves and the rest with a grindingwin against the Pumas; WP clinging to secondspot in a thriller against Griquas in Kimberley(never an easy task in the Land of the BigHole), and the Sharks, needing to stay closelyin touch, coming away with a 39 - 27 winagainst theBulls atLoftus, butwithout abonuspoint. Thus Lions continue to ride high on 32points, followed by WP (27) and Sharks (26). Ex-citing stuff!

The best news of the week, however, camenot from the Currie Cup or the Boks in NZ, butfrom what used to be called “die ou Transvaal”.There, this column’s 007 dug out the week’sbest story. Giving rugby’s political pessimistsa swift kick in the rear, he revealed that trans-formation in the Golden Lions club scene isaliveandwell, even if hardlya lineof this scoophas been published in the country’s press.

He cables that Tirfu Raiders, the only pre-unity Transvaal Independent RFU club com-peting at top level, has made it into the Preda-tor final, after a thrilling last-minute win overPotchefstroom University, and will meet Jo-hannesburg University in the final.

Raiders are based in the Bill Jardine Stadi-um in Bosmont and draw their players fromSoweto, Riverlea and the Alberton-Germistonarea. Its players are 10 percent white, 42 per-cent African, 47 Coloured and four percent In-dian. Making a provincial final is wonderfulnews for a club that has no sponsor, and whosemembers play rugby first and foremost for thelove of it.

Transformation is growing by the season –and here’s a message for the country’s persist-ent doomsayers. Stop looking on the black side(no pun intended). Put on your bifocals and de-light in the bright side for once.

No doubt you’re already fretting over theBok’s opening match against Wales in Welling-ton on Sunday. Take heart – Wynand Claas-sens’ team had a stirring win there in 1981. Canwe win the World Cup? We’re certainly not thefavourites but anything is possible in such anextensive examination of a country’s rugbyskills, and pride that springs from a deep-seat-ed desire for success.

Meanwhile here are some RWC facts youmaynotknow. The first tournament in1987waswon by NZ, beating France 29 - 9 in the final.SA played for the first time in 1995, winning thefinalagainst theAllBlacks15 - 12.TheBokswontheir second RW Cup in 2007, beating England15 - 6. Only Australia has also won two WorldCups. Our oldest player in a final is Os du Randt(2007 – 35); the youngest Francois Steyn (2007– 20). SA’s biggest win was 72 - 6 v Uruguay in2003. Wales, our first round opponents, have thesame highest score: 72 - 8 v Japan in 2007. Sittight! It’s going to be a tough one!

EXPRESS REPORTER

ON August 31 sixty years ago, the firstVolkswagen Beetle was produced in Uiten-hage.

Since then,VWSAhasproducedover 2.8mil-lion vehicles, been awarded numerous exportorders by its parent company, won a numberof local and international awards and current-ly produces South Africa’s two top-selling pas-senger vehicles.

Volkswagen Group South Africa ManagingDirector, David Powels, said the Company’scome a long way since its humble beginningsin 1946 with the establishment of South Afri-can Motor Assemblers and Distributors (SA-MAD), which produced 12 Studebakers a day,to the world class factory it is today – produc-ing an average of 600 vehicles daily.

Powels said the original management, in theform of SAMAD’s first MD, Melville SteeleBrooks and Chairman, Baron Klaus vonOertzen, could not have predicted howVolkswagen would grow from a small Compa-ny with big dreams, and prosper over the next60 years – not only building Volkswagens andAudis, but also Austins, Volvo’s and Jeeps.

Since its introduction in 1951 until the endof production in 1979, 290 000 of the iconic Bee-

tles were sold in South Africa. For 11 of those28 years, it was the top-selling vehicle in thecountry. Another proudly South African car,the Golf 1, was launched in 1979, and until theend of its life cycle at the end of 2009, 517 384A1 Golfs had rolled off the production line inUitenhage. These humble cars became giantsin the motoring world, and would define gener-ations of South Africans.

Volkswagen’s advertising campaigns overthe years also speak volumes. Who could forgetthe famous “Red, Yellow, Blue Citi Golf” TVcampaigns, or the aerial views of thousands ofits staff and another of VW vehicles - sprawledout in the shape of the company logo - in the“People’s Cars” television ads, or of the fatherproudly handing over the keys to his belovedBeetle to his son?

Not only has it been producing “People’sCars” for six decades, but VWSA also has aproud history of putting people first – fromhaving trained and qualified the country’sfirst Black artisans in the 1980’s to providingcontinuous training to its staff, suppliers anddealers today.

Currently in SA, a 5 000-strong workforceproduces about 600 Polo Vivo’s and Polo’s – thecountry’s two top-selling passenger vehicles –daily. These two vehicles have helped positionVWSA as the market leader for four monthsof 2011. (Source: VWSA Media release)

Inside there is space forfive, with three-full-sizedseats in the rear, while anoth-er practical feature is a spa-cious luggage compartmentof 370 litres and a host of clev-er storage solutions.

Finely crafted to convey aprestigious presence both in-side and out, the DS4 featuresmeticulous detailing fromcarefully applied chrometouches to the use of top quali-ty materials for the stylish in-terior, including the finestleather for the seats.

The interior features an en-veloping driving positionwith chrome-surround dialsfocused directly towards thedriver’s eye-line. There is al-so chrome detailing on the airvent surrounds, gear-lever

Owners can personalisethe interior as the DS4 isavailable with a choice ofthree leather combinations, including a two-tone option.

These include blind spotand tyre pressure monitor-ing,(optional) static corner-ing lights, dual-function xe-non steering lights that canswivel by up to 150, (optional)intelligent traction control, hill assist, a programmablecruise control and speed lim-iter as well as a parking spacegap measurement system andelectric safety brake.

The DS4 comes in a choiceof petrol and diesel engines.

The same basic 1,6-litre petrolengine, developed in conjunc-tion with the BMW Group, isoffered in two power outputversions – the normally-aspi-rated VTi 120 develops 120hp(88kW) and the turbochargedTHP 200 puts out 200hp(147kW) – while the HDi 2-li-tre turbo diesel produces163hp (120kW) of power and340kW of torque.

The two VTi 120 models –Style and Style Pack – usefive-speed manual gearboxesto transmit the power to thefront wheels, while the THP200 and HDi 160 models are fit-ted with a six-speed manualtransmission.

All the DS4 models benefitfrom a 5-year/100 000km serv-ice plan and 3-year/100 000km manufacturer’s warran-ty, which can be extended to5-years/100 000km at extracost.
