Monday Nights at Word of Peace
2
As you know, February is Valen-ne’s Day. It is interes-ng that we really don’t
know much about St Valen-ne, the person for which the day is named. Leg-
end has it that he was a Chris-an, who by refusing to deny his faith, was mar-
tyred by the Roman Emperor Claudius in 280 A.D. Before they cut off his head,
he restored sight and healing to the jailor’s daughter. How you end up with
candy hearts and a roman-c holiday out of that is a mystery. About the only
thing that makes sense is that he loved even those who would take his life.
Even though the day has a rather shaky founda-on for its beginning, I think it
is a great day to celebrate the gi: of love that is so precious. The following
quote is right on: “The moment you have in your heart this extraordinary thing
called love and feel the depth, the delight, the ecstasy of it, you will discover
that for you the world is transformed.” — J. Krishnamur-
We who are followers of Jesus have so many reminders of how precious the
love of God is and how important it is to love one another. When you have a
moment, grab your Bible and reread 1 Corinthians 13. It is so o:en read at
weddings and appropriately so. These marvelous words wriAen by Saint Paul
are some of the most magnificent words ever wriAen. Read them on Valen-
-ne’s Day. They will put a wonderful perspec-ve on the day that is dedicated
to love.
Let me offer another thought that comes from Mother Theresa that may also
be helpful for you on Valen-ne’s Day. She said, “Spread love everywhere you
go; first of all in your own house. Give love to your children, to your wife or
husband, to a next door neighbor….Let no one ever come to you without leav-
ing beAer and happier. Be the living expression of God’s kindness; kindness in
your face, kindness in your eyes, kindness in your smile, kindness in your
warm gree-ng.”
Valen-ne’s Day is an oasis in the long desert of holidays between Christmas
and Easter. Take -me to focus again on the love of Jesus and the love you
have for those who are precious to you. The gi: of the holiday is to help us
not take those things for granted.
In Christ’s love,

February 3 & 4 Pastor Ron Prasek: “U Before I”
The Chris-ans in Corinth were proud of their spiritual gi:s.
Paul reminds them that God gives many gi:s, but the pur-
pose of them is love.

February 20—Lent Pastor Ron Prasek: “Take Care of Your House”
A:er Hurricane Sandy, hundreds of damaged houses are
being demolished. In the last several years, thousands of
homes have been lost to foreclosure. Jesus also laments the
imminent destruc-on of a “house.” Unless we tend to our
rela-onship with God, our spiritual “houses” can become
disasters as well.

THANK YOUTHANK YOUTHANK YOUTHANK YOU
Thank You to Elain Edge for her many hours of work
in organizing the Fair Trade Fair this year. Elain
worked -relessly to make sure there were great prod-
ucts available and she worked many hours at the fair
so our congrega-on could shop. We sold almost
$4,000 worth of handmade products, and all the pro-
ceeds go directly back to the ar-sans who made
them...into the hands of people around the world
who are trying to build a beAer life.
The following is a leAer from a family who was helped
through our Adopt-A-Family program:
Word of Peace,
Words cannot express the many thanks and grateful-
ness we have for all that you have done for our family.
This has been a tough year for our family and because
of your love and support we have been blessed with
so many things. We were able to keep our electricity
on because of your help and able to put gas in our
vehicles so that we could find/get to work. But words
really can’t express how we felt that day when we
picked up our 2 boxes of gi=s for our children and our-
selves.
Because of everyone’s love and generosity our chil-
dren will have gi=s to open on Christmas morning. To
us though as parents our greatest gi= is knowing that
we are surrounded by so many people that love and
care for our family. We have never felt more blessed
than we do now! We are forever grateful for every-
one’s love, support and prayers for us and our family.
We are truly honored and blessed to be a part of such
a wonderful congrega>on/family!
Thank You for Your Thrivent Choice Dollars
Thank you for naming Word of Peace as the recipient
for your Choice Dollars. You have given over $17,000
in the last two years! These gi:s have been used for
things like Keeping the Promise events, Kids of Peace
scholarships, youth scholarships for the Na-onal
Youth Gathering, a speaker in the sanctuary, worship
enhancements, funeral service items and a youth
room sound system.
Thrivent members with products designate Choice
Dollars monthly, quarterly or annually. Members di-
rect their Choice Dollars to the Lutheran organiza-on
and congrega-ons of their choice. The funds are de-
posited into the recipient’s bank account, in this case,
Word of Peace.
Thank you so much for your generosity! Your offer-
ings are being used to further the ministry at your
church, Word of Peace.

Ash Wednesday and Lent is is a -me of reflec-on and
evalua-on of our place in our spiritual journey. Some
people give up something that is dear to them as a
sign of their thankfulness of the sacrifice Jesus made
for us. Others add a spiritual discipline to their regular
rou-ne for the same reason. We gather on Wednes-
day evenings to fellowship and worship together.
On Wednesdays during Lent this year, we will be look-
ing at the characters that took a part in the Passion of
Christ as they have a conversa-on with God: one char-
acter per evening. There will also be a puppet show
each evening featuring the same person. Again we
will sing Marty Haugen’s beau-ful Holden Evening
Prayer. Why not make Wednesday evenings a part of
your Lenten journey?
God be with you this day and every day.
