DESCRIPTION
The Denver Peak Academy trains employees throughout the City and County of Denver how to identify and eliminate waste and improve their daily municipal operations. In this training, learn techniques based on lean and agile principles that build personal initiative to help government staff reform and innovate their department’s internal processes. Be prepared for a hands-on learning experience to understand how Denver has helped create a culture of innovation with their City colleagues through the Peak Academy. Why Peak Academy?Investing in Ourselves & Our Culture
• Let’s see if we can create 11,000 innovators in Denver
• That sounds cool, but how?
Process InnovationProcess vs. Technology
• Technology had to come, but start with creating the
culture of innovation
• Lean process improvement – The Open Source of
innovation
Teaching Innovation
through… TENNIS?!?
Rules of the Game…
No one can touch the ball more than once1
Follow the same order in each round2
There can be no drops (“defects”): Start Over3
The ball must pass through everyone's hands4
Must be done in 5 seconds5
Debrief…What did you learn?
• What was your team’s greatest INNOVATION?
• What “WASTE” was there in your process?
• Did you see the waste together / Work as a team?
• Did you all “SEEK PERFECTION” together?
• Did your team create “FLOW”?
• Did you QUESTION the rules of the game?
• Did you have FUN?
5 Principles of INNOVATIONLean Process Improvement as taught to us…
• Identify the value that your customers demand
• Map the steps required to deliver value to your customers
• Deliver value to customers on demand (called “Pull”)
• Deliver value to customers without waste (called “Flow”)
• Seek Perfection as a TEAM: Standardize and solve to improve
Lean provides toolsTo Identify “Waste”…
• 8 types of Wastes
• Gemba Walk
• Process Mapping
• Spaghetti Diagrams
• Communication Circles
& to eliminate “Waste”
• Standard Work
• Takt Time and Level Loading
• Just Do Its (JDIs)
• Rapid Improvement Events (RIEs)
Waste is a DIRTY Word, right?Waste is disrespectful…
• …of HUMANITY because it wastes scarce resources
• … of INDIVIDUALS because it asks them to do work with no value
• …of CITIZENS because it asks them to endure/pay for work with no value
Tools to ID Waste
PROCESS MAPPING
You ID’d the waste, now what?Standardize to solve & improve!
• Standard Work EXERCISE
• Pull out a sheet of paper & follow my instructions…
