Widow of Fred Augustus Pearson
Harriet Johnson Pearson, age 85, June 25, 2011,
Widow of Marvin Edward Pearson
Ruth Clark Pearson, age 82, July 14, 2011,
Widow of Edd Monroe Pearson, Jr.
(Taken from Barnie Corinne’s Pearson Happenings, written from
memory by her in 1979)
Monroe Pearson and Malinda Matilda Makiline Smith had a
set of twins. They were named Ed Monroe and Fred Quincy.
Ed Monroe was chosen to be my father.
After growing up, he journeyed to the big
state of Texas, where he chose to court a petite
blonde, Mattie Shivers. They were married. Mattie
was to be his help mate for life. Papa, being a
handsome brunette; they made a striking couple.
To this union ten children were born…half being
lads and half being lasses.
Papa was a wise sort of man. You could call him a sage
known for his far-seeing and predicting in the buying and trad-
ing business. He managed the St. Louis store #2 on the square in
Houston, Ms. He also farmed, was an excellent cotton buyer,
worked share cropping, was a horse trader, and very well-known.
Mama, a saint of a person, never took God’s name in vain.
She applied the corn cob method to those of us who did. She would
take a corn cob, wrap it in rags, and dip it in ashes and soap. If
we uttered any foul language that we heard, by the way from our
Papa, we got the treatment. Mama believed this to be a cleansing
– restricting punishment. She believed in putting God at the top of
one’s list and all other things would be added as the Lord saw fit.
All tramps feasted at her doorstep whether black or white. No one
was turned away. As Mama put it: ―lest she might offend an angel
unawares‖.
PEARSON BEGINNINGS
CHAPTER I
--SO THE STORY CONTINUES--
Once there was a sage and his saintly wife. They had a family of
ten children whom they loved dearly. The saint said, ―One, two, and
three; that’s all I see. Oh, here is another one, two, three, and four.
I’m sure there’s more. Yes, here are numbers six, seven, eight, nine, &
ten‖
―My goodness,‖ said the sage. ―To finish our task, we best name them.‖
Papa busied himself making a living for his
family. Crates of apples, oranges, stalks of
bananas, clusters of grapes, hoops of cheese,
huge boxes of crackers and peppermint
sticks, all these, graced our pantry at all
times.
We children were struck with hunger
more often than you would think possible.
Running through, munching and plucking
freely from the bounty that Papa had pro-
vided for our pleasure. Mama & Papa won-
dered if we possessed what they called a
―tapeworm‖.

Chapter I continued…
Mattie Shivers Pearson found herself a young woman with
ten children. Almost tied to the stove and a diaper pail, she nev-
ertheless was always optimistic. Instead of being bitter, she con-
sidered this as a God-given duty, to raise her children to the best
of her ability. Putting her shoulders to the throttle, she warbled
―Amazing Grace‖ and ―When the Roll is called up Yonder, I’ll be
there‖.
So today Mama is enjoying the riches of Heaven with Jesus
Christ, her Savior and Redeemer.
Papa, a merchant-cotton buyer, on returning home from
work was greeted with a smile and a kiss. Mama ushered him in
to a dinner which he referred to as a ―feast, fit for a king‖.
I often wonder how my Mother made it through a hard, long
day. She had a friend and helper named Jesus with her all day
each day who renewed her strength. She rose to begin a new day
with a prayer on her lips and a song in her heart. That was
Mama.
Chapter I continued…
GRANDMA PEARSON
By
Sarah Pearson Peugh, Granddaughter
I remember her well, dear friends of mine,
From the days of the dread Depression
Of the thirties when a dime was a dime
And Papa with us ten children battling a recession
And couldn’t allot us even a penny.
Grandma Pearson lived with us
And the Government paid her a pension;
When financial pressure caused Papa to fuss,
Grandma Pearson would help him with an extension
Of her old age pension check.
She had long grey hair, thin,
Slicked back and rolled in a ball;
Her silver rimmed glasses from the ―5 & 10‖
Added authority; though we were small,
We minded her.
Today, it comes back vividly within-
Though I’m now a half century older;
Whenever Grandma’s check came in, we children
would hang over her shoulder
For our nickel allowance.
She lived to be ninety-four!
And we learned a lot from the part of aged
Grandmother living with us,
That of loving, caring and sharing the art of living
together day by day.
The Smith-Pearson lineage is traced to 6 generations ago when
Great, great Grandpa Amos Smith of Fayette, AL around 1834
met Great, great Grandma Hattie Rachel Wheeler of Spartan-
burg, S.C.. She became the first of his 3 wives and mothered 14
of his 32 children before she died, one of whom was Great
Grandma, Malinda Smith born 1843.
Malinda Smith became our Great Grandmother
when she married James Monroe Pearson of Chickasaw County,
MS perhaps after the Civil War. To their union were born 4 chil-
dren, two of which were twin boys, one being our Grandfather,
Edd Monroe Pearson born 9-6-1879. After Malinda’s husband
died, she came to live with one of the twins, Edd Monroe Pear-
son, our Grandfather. Malinda lived to be 94; died in 1937; &
was buried at McCondy, MS.
At the age of 23, Edd Monroe went from MS to Grand Saline, TX to visit
Cousin Tom Pearson, whose wife, Mina, had a beautiful sister, Mattie. This
is where he met and married our Grandmother, Martha Lillie, Ora Shivers
Pearson, bringing her back to Chickasaw County, where they reared their
10 children:
1. Barnie Monroe Pearson, 1905-1923
2. Malinda Amelia Pearson, 1907 – 2008
3. Fred Augustus Pearson, 1909 – 1983
4. Nannie Lou Pearson, 1912 – 19__
5. Ludie Eva Lena Pearson, 1915 – 2003
6. John Charles Thomas Pearson, 1918 – 1978
7. Marvin Edward Pearson, 1920 – 1996
8. Barnie Corinne Pearson, 1923 –
9. Sarah Louise Pearson, 1924 – 2002
10. Edd Monroe Pearson, Jr., 1926 – 2005
Our Grandfather, Edd Monroe, was a Cotton Buyer. In 1945, at age 66, he
had a heart attack in his Houston home and died. Grandmother Mattie
Shivers Pearson died in 1972. They both are buried in the Houston Ceme-
tery.

Notes from Family
(Taken from Barnie Corinne’s Pearson Happenings)
Out of all the Pearson Happenings, I think the rewards of a soul
saving station called PEARSON CHAPEL CHURCH OF THE NAZARENE
would be Mama & Papa’s proudest accomplishment. The greatest
delight of our home was when all of the children and grandchildren
came home to Mama’s for a reunion. Each one from the plumpest
to the skinniest, from the tallest to the shortest in statue, the prettiest to
the plainest were all greeted with a hug and a kiss from Mama.
Whether it be an outlaw, so to speak, or an inlaw, each one was wel-
comed the same. As long as Mama’s mind lasted, each family, each
child, and each grandchild was lifted up to God in her prayers. Each
morning, Mama got out of bed at four o’clock and prayed for one hour
on her knees for all of us. This also included friends and her prayer list
for the lost.
Papa could not stand to see a one of his children doing any thing
wrong. Although he did not live for God all of his life, he wanted his off-
spring to walk a straight line, to get an education, and to be somebody.
The day came when my dad cried out in prayer begging God to
save his soul and his children’s souls. I think all of us are believers of a
risen Savior, who has gone to prepare us a place in His kingdom. Let us
all be a numbered family around the Great White Throne for eternity.

SUMMARY
— The End —
Pearson Chapel Church of the Nazarene in Chickasaw
County is our unique heritage. At the very beginning of
the deep Depression of the thirties, PAPA EDD & MAMA
PEARSON moved to the country, 10 miles from Houston.
They lived on the huge Pearson Farm. There was no
church. Being a good Christian lady, Mama Pearson
began having church in her home, sometimes on the
front porch. Many Sundays the people stayed for dinner.
Mama Pearson seated children on trunks, anywhere she
could find room. Sunday school was in the hallway of
the home. People got saved there. As time went on, they
had BRUSH ARBOR meetings. In one of them, Brother
Lucius got under conviction, went home, was unable to
sleep and went to Brother Warhurst’s home and prayed
through. Brother Warhurst was pastor in 1940-42 when the first crude build-
ing was completed.
On May 14, 1939, the people decided it was time to organize a church.
Rev. Cecil Knippers, Nazarene District Superintendent, was called to the Pear-
son home. Thirteen Christians agreed to this and became CHARTER MEMBERS.
They were: Mama Pearson, Sarah Pearson, Corrine Pearson, Mable Berry,
Margaret Berry, Paul Carter, Earle Poole, Mr. & Mrs. Pat Russell, Mr. & Mrs. J.W.
Westmoreland, and Mrs. Hubert Chaney. Rev. N.O. Nabors was appointed the
first pastor of the newly organized church in 1939.
No one can remember when God gave Mama
Pearson the VISION of a church in the community, only
that HE did. Perhaps the vision would have died if she
hadn’t put feet to it. She walked the neighborhood invit-
ing people to her home for Sunday school and Church.
On the 12th
day of December, 1939, Papa Edd
executed a warranty deed for one acre of land on which
to build a church. Mama Pearson’s & Papa Edd’s early
journey was just the beginning. Now 72 years later, here
we are celebrating with the folks of Pearson Chapel,
amazed at what God has done, amazed at what God
can do through one person. To God be the glory, great
things He has done.

HERITAGE
by Sarah Pearson Peugh
Dear is the heritage time has granted us
When kindred souls again unite
To reminisce the past that implanted us
Our great and marvelous birthright.
We gather together to ask God’s blessings
On every family befall,
And on every future generation,
Lord, bless them and keep them all.
We gather together to honor our dead,
Reminisce glories and defeats;
To rejoice the births of our children’s children
As all our generations meet.
Achievements, history, genealogy
Family conversations will fill
With our descendants hearing reality
About fore parents determined will.
Still standing, a loving Chapel ever gives
Evidence beside the road
Of Grandparents’ prayers and efforts lived
There, near their beloved spiritual abode.
