    11/16

    The bar in the Pellston

    High School volleyball pro-

    gram is set high.

    The Hornets and second-

    year coach Brooke Groff

    are coming off a fourth-

    place finish in the Ski

    Valley Conference, and a

    loss to league rival Onaway

in a Class D regional semi-

    final match.

    Both of those factors can

be used as motivation forthe 2013 Hornets.

    They have talked about

the fact that one of the

    goals would be conference

    and looking at the state

    tournament, Groff said

    her players. Theyve set

    those goals for themselves.

    The Hornets return three

    starters in libero Breah

    Carter and outside hitters

    Abbie Welch and

    Mackenzie Wright. Also

    back is defensive specialist

    Kelly Lewis, who logged

    significant playing time a

    year ago.

    Lewis, Carter and Welch,

    all seniors, are the team

    captains. Senior Megan

    Milbrandt, a starter last

    season, was lost for the

    year when she injured her

knee at team camp in July

    at Ferris State University.

    Megan would have been

(an) outside hitter and itforced us to shift some peo-

    ple around, Groff said,

    adding that she moved

    Welch, the setter last year,

    to outside hitter this year

    in place of Milbrandt.

    Abbie is doing an awesome

    job filling that role that

    Megan had.

    As is always the case

with any high school athlet-ic team, there is an adjust-

    ment period as varsity new-

    comers get acclimated with

    the veterans. The 2013

    Hornets are no different.

    Three sophomores

    Olivia Grant, Samantha

    Stark and Hanah Carter

    are on the roster, while

    Shaylee Smith, a 6-foot jun-

ior, is also a varsity new-

    comer.

Senior Breanna Sismanreturns to the program for

    her first varsity season

    after sitting out the entire

    2012 season with an injury,

    while another senior, defen-

    sive specialist Cassidy

    Thayer, re-joins the pro-

    gram after having sat out

    the past two seasons.

    In all, the Hornets have

    six players who got their

    first taste of varsity volley-

    ball when Pellston hosted

    its season-opening invita-

    tional, and reached the

    semifinals before bowing to

    Cheboygan.

    The biggest adjustment

    for the newcomers, Groff

said, is the speed and the

    movement on the blocking

    and being prepared for how

quick the hits come at the

    varsity level.

    Just watching how they

played as a team and as

individuals as the daywent on, they picked up on

    things very quickly. You

    never know with a group

    that young, (but) it was

great to see how well they

    played together.

    The Hornets were sched-

    uled to partake in the

    Cadillac Invitational during

    the opening week of the

season. Cadillac is tradi-tionally a northern

    Michigan volleyball power,

    and its invitational is

    loaded with solid programs

    from schools that dwarf

    Pellston in enrollment.

We see a lot of bigger

    schools and tough teams at

    Cadillac, Groff said. It

helps us see what we need

to do to get better. And the

    girls, when they play better

    competition, they rise toit.

    Losing Milbrandt to

    injury is, naturally, a chal-

    lenge to overcome. But with

    Groff now having had a

    year of coaching experi-

    ence under her belt, last

years fourth-place leagfinish may prove simpl

    be an aberration.

I learned a lot of th

    last year and were imp

    menting some differen

    things this year, Groff

    said. I think that this

    well put a strong team

    the floor.

    Groff added that the

    opening tournament w

    good indicator.

They were always gafter everything, nothi

    hit the floor, she said.

    They worked hard to

    everything. That goes a

    long way. Itll develop

    throughout the year.

on to make the playoffs. Jo-

    burg and St. Ignace each

    captured a district champi-

    onship, and the Saints, one

    of the states top Division

    8 teams, eventually won a

    regional title before bow-

    ing in the state semifinals.

    Two of those games, if

    we believe that we could

    have won and were mental-

ly prepared, we feel like we

    could have won, Schley

    said of the Hornets five-

game slide to close the 2012

    season. Then were 6-3

and in the playoffs, a place

    the Hornets never have

    gone. But if the upward

trend continues, Pellstoncould visit the post season

    soon.

    The second year as

    been much easier, Schley

said of he and his staff

    begin their sophomore sea-

son at Pellston. A lot of us

    were first-year coaches last

    year and the second year,

    weve been much more pre-

    pared in terms of practice

    plans, what drills to use,

and how to teach the kids

    better and more efficient-

    ly.The Hornets have just 18

    players on the opening-

    night roster, so, as usual,

    Pellston will need to stay

    healthy and physical con-

    ditioning is an absolute

must in order to stand up

    to the week-in, week-out

    rigors of the high school

    football season.

    Captains Austin Hamlin,

    Jon Ritter and Justin

    Woolever lead thereturnees.

We dont have a lot of

    guys coming back, Schley

said. But weve got a good

    core of kids here.

    Hamlin moves from run-

    ning back to quarterback

    in the Hornets wing-T

    offense, an alignment

    Schley implemented a year

ago in his rookie season at

    the helm.

    The kids already have a

    year under their belt in

the system, Schley said. Its a lot quicker process

    because they understand

    what were doing. Hes

    (Hamlin) picking it up

    pretty well. Hes a smart

    kid. Hes a fast learner.

    Ritter, junior Chase

    Woods and Woolever are

    among the frontrunners to

    claim starting spots at

    halfback, while senior

    Kurtis Spencer is the full-

    back.Weve got six or seven

    running backs, so we can

    rotate them in and out

    back there, Schley said.

    Returnee Thomas

    Readmond, a 6-foot-2, 215-

    pound junior, anchors

    offensive line along w

    Tim Somers, a 6-1 sen

    tight end.

    Among those vying

    starting spots along o

    sive front are Devon

    Anderson, Ron Hoskin

Randy Marihugh, RanAbney and Zack Kelle

    On the defensive sid

    the ball, Schley said, n

    ing was settled person

    wise as the Hornets ey

    date with Ski Valley

    Conference South Div

    member Fife Lake For

    Area in their season o

    er.

    We have quite a few

    guys who can play, S

said. Thats a good prlem to have. Weve got

    competition for those

    spots.
