As USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) gets back to life in port after a six month deployment, new Lincoln Sailors are coming aboard and getting a chance to see what life on an aircraft carrier can be like.

Sailors who are seeing ship life for the first time, such as Electronics Technician 3rd Class Aaron Joseph from Conyers, Ga., who works on the SPS-49 Radar, are adjusting to a whole new way of life onboard Lincoln.

“I think I’m in the honeymoon phase,” said Joseph. “Everything is still new and interesting. It’s so easy to get turned around and find something new. It just makes me laugh now, instead of being embarrassed.”

Though relatively new to the Navy, Joseph has high hopes for the future, and motivating memories of his past. For some Sailors, the Navy goes deeper than water.

“My dad was in (the Navy), and I grew up hearing sea stories. When I grew bored with college I really couldn’t help myself,” said Joseph. “I really don’t know about a career right now. So far I love the Navy, but I’ve only been in for two years and am just now getting to my first ship! I think I will have a better idea after my first deployment.”

USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) commissioned two chief petty officers to officers in separate commissioning

ceremonies held on Naval Station Everett, May 4 and May 6.

Senior Chief Machinist’s Mate Gary Bruns and Chief Aviation Boatswain’s Mate (Equipment)

Osbaldo Ibarravarela were commissioned as naval officers, respectively.

Enlisted Sailors who become officers are also known as “Mustangs.” The programs leading to commission usually involve an in-service procurement program and competitive selection process with no interruption of his/her active duty career.

The schedule of events for both ceremonies included welcoming remarks, uniform transition, and a gift presentation from Lincoln’s Chief Petty Officer Mess.

Guest Speaker Lt. Joshua D. Stehr, a former aircraft launch and recovery officer stationed onboard Lincoln, spoke of the hard-earned accomplishments and future challenges faced by mustangs.

“To every young Sailor, you will be his or her mentor. The decisions you make can affect the entire (strike) group and when no one else has the answer they will utter the famous words, ‘let’s go ask the divisional officer,’” said Stehr.

After a presentation of awards, the uniform transition was performed by the family members of both Ibarravarela and Bruns.

Ibarravarela said he believes in the opportunities the Navy has to offer to young people.

“You have the opportunity to do something special with your life and it’s all about what you do with it and how much dedication you’re going to put into it, at the end you’ll see the results,” Ibarravarela said.

Ibarravarela’s naval career began in 1998. Past duty assignments include Naval Aviation Technical Training Center, Pensacola, USS John F. Kennedy (CV 67), USS Kitty Hawk (CV 63), and USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72). His past citations include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (2 awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (3 awards) and various unit and campaign awards and ribbons.

Bruns began his naval career in 1987. Following Recruit Training Command, he attended Nuclear Field “A” School and Nuclear Power School in Orlando. His past duty assignments include USS Lafayette (SSBN 616), USS Fulton (AS 11) and USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74).

After attending Officer Development Training in Newport, RI, Chief Warrant Officer 2 Bruns will report to USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76).

Ens. Ibarravarela is scheduled to report to USS Peleliu (LHA 5)

Adm. Gary R o u g h e a d , chief of naval

operations, visited USS A b r a h a m

Lincoln (CVN 72) during a trip to Naval Station Everett May 10.

Roughead spoke to Sailors at an all-hands call in the hangar bay and met with Lincoln Chiefs in the Chiefs’ Mess after being welcomed back to Lincoln by Rear Adm. Mark D. Guadagnini, commander, Carrier Strike Group (CSG) 9.

During his visit, Roughhead re-enlisted 10 Sailors and presented awards to three others.

“Each and every one of us can be

extraordinarily proud of what you and your shipmates do each and every day,” said Roughead.

“I thank you for what you are doing. I thank you for the way that you represent our Navy and the way you represent our country. There is no other organization on this earth that can do what you do every day,” he said.

Lincoln is currently undergoing a minor overhaul after recently returning to its

homeport of Everett, Wash., from a deployment to the U.S. 5th and 7th Fleet areas of responsibility.

US S A b r a h a m Lincoln’s

(CVN 72) Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) center has

always had a steady track record of keeping entertainment within your grasp, but just because we are now in port doesn’t mean their job is over.

As always, John Porter, Director of MWR aboard Lincoln and his staff in the MWR office are brimming with ideas and opportunities to try to bring a little extra excitement to your average work week.

“We are always looking for more information about things to do around Seattle, Everett, or Bremerton. If people know of something that is going on that we haven’t put out yet, feel free to contact me or John Porter,” said Aviation Boatswain’s Mate (Handling) Airman Lauren Byrne, originally from Steilacoom, Wash., who has worked as MWR Admin around three months. “At times we can be pretty busy with things going on in port and activities on the ship while underway. It gets pretty crazy down here sometimes, but we all come to work with a positive attitude. I enjoy working here.”

Maintaining the gyms and workout equipment, making Starbucks coffee available, planning holiday events and offering discounted ticket prices for a wide variety of concerts and events all over the calendar are just some of the things that MWR provides for Lincoln Sailors in port.

Another little known fact is that MWR will offer a 20 percent refund on your receipts from events of MWR sponsored venues or events that were either sold out or weren’t available at all.

Maybe the spice in your life is tickets to upcoming concerts like Katy Perry, Sade, or System of a Down. Or maybe you just want to head out to the movies. Or catch a Mariners or Sounders game. If any of those examples strike your fancy then I can almost guarantee you wouldn’t mind saving some cash on the discounted ticket prices you can get from the MWR office.

“Our door is almost always open. If you have any questions feel free to stop by. If you want to know about something going on in town or an event that’ll be here, I’ll be happy to look it up for you, as well as prices for tickets that we don’t have. MWR is here for the Sailors and their families,” said Byrne. “From a simple night out to a fun filled weekend, we have what you need at great prices. All you got to do is knock.”

A large event coming up for Lincoln, thanks to MWR, is the Spring Fling Party at the Tulalip Resort and Casino. One night of hors d’oeuvres serving, DJ spinning, clean, wholesome, Navy fun.

“It’s a chance to mingle with fellow sailors and families. Not to mention the great prizes we will be giving away,” said Byrne.

And mentioning those great prizes, the Spring Fling Party gets you a chance at winning electronics, sport and concert tickets, a Ford Fiesta, and attendance also gets you the following day off work.

Friggatriskaidekaphobia:

13. “I Sell the Dead”- Artfully blending shrieks

and giggles, this sleeper-hit horror/comedy flick deserves

to better known. Featuring a terrific cast including Angus

Scrimm (“Phantasm”) and Ron Pearlman, this fun spirited old-

timey midnight romp tells the tale of two grave diggers in Victoria-era

England and their adventures with all manner of things that go bump in the

night.12. “The Night Flyer” – based on a

short story by Stephen King, it’s the story of an unscrupulous tabloid reporter on the trail of

his latest eerie expose: an apparent vampire pilot who prays on isolated airports in a black Cessna. A

proper mix of mystery and gore, and a freaky finale that will leave even resolved horror hounds checking their locks, “The Night Flyer” is an underrated foot note in horror history that is definitely worth further study.

11. “Inside” – One of the scariest movies to come out of the recent French horror craze, “Inside” is the story of a young pregnant woman home alone who is stalked by a psychotic lady intent on stealing her unborn child. You have to watch it to believe, and certainly not for the faint of heart, “Inside” delivers the scares in spades.

10. “The Good Son” – Hands-down the best performance of Macaulay Culkin’s career, “The Good Son” features everybody’s favorite precious pre-teen as an impossibly creepy psychopathic young man determined to kill his family and frame his cousin. This is a truly disturbing and underrated film. You’ll never look at “Home Alone” the same again.

9. “Near Dark” – This criminally overlooked 80’s vampire flick is often ignored as “the other 80’s vampire movie” since it was released so closely to “The Lost Boys”. Featuring incredible performances by Lance “Alien” Henricksen and Bill “Big Love” Paxton, “Near Dark” is vampires doing what they’re supposed to do: killing people. This thirsty thriller is exactly what you need to wash away the taste of “Twilight”.

Friggatriskaidekaphobia:

Ugh, holidays. Christmas is inevitably disappointing and stressful. Thanksgiving is nice, until you eat too much and spend the

next few days sick to death of turkey leftovers. The fourth of July could be fun, except it always seems to come with sunburn and loud drunken neighbors setting off fireworks until the wee hours. Easter? Overrated. Valentine’s Day? What a racket. For the majority of the adult world, holidays just aren’t all they’re cracked up to be.

But there is one holiday that has yet to disappoint us: Friday the 13th. It always falls on a Friday, the greatest day of the week. It demands no shopping or planning, no travel or gatherings. Friday the 13th is a no-pressure

holiday dedicated to the celebration of unlucky things that happen to other people. And if you’re not spending your 13th day of May this year locked safely inside and enjoying some fantastic fright fare, you are wrong. You could relapse to the usual and spend your precious free time watching Jason Voorhees slaughter stupid teenagers, but why do that to yourself? With all the exciting new things developing in the genre, despite the continued criticisms and lame remakes, horror has so much to offer the viewer brave enough to look. Below are our picks for the “Best 13 Horror Movies you should be watching (in no particular order)”. Lock the door, turn off the lights and settle in because it’s that time of year again…

8. “House of the Devil” – See this movie! A genuinely creepy and atmospheric tension-builder, “House of the Devil” tells the story of a young girl looking to make some fast cash baby-sitting for a creepy couple who eerie house in the woods should be enough of a deterrent, but isn’t. This retro-style fright flick will scare you.

7. “Dance of the Dead” – This often overlooked horror/comedy seamlessly blends two of the greatest genres in the history of cinema; zombies and prom. Awaken from their graves; the dead descend on a sleepy suburban town on the biggest night of every teenager’s life. A group of unlikely heroes band together to defeat the zombie menace the only way they know how, by kicking ass and playing awesome Pat Benatar covers! This movie’s great blend on violence, gore, and laughs makes it one of the best zombie flicks since “Shaun of the Dead” and the best prom flick since…I don’t have an example.

6. “Frozen” –Director Adam Green screws with your head with a situation a lot of us could find ourselves in. Three friends enjoying a weekend of snowboarding at a resort decide to push the envelope and squeeze one last run in before the place closes down for the week. After a grave mistake by careless employees, the trio find themselves stuck halfway up the mountain, hundreds of feet of the ground on the chairlift. As night approaches and resort shuts down, they face the cold reality that no one is coming to help them.

5. “Them” –Another gem from the recent swarm of French horror, this movie tells the story of a couple, home alone at their country estate on a seemingly normal evening. The couple starts to experience strange noises and happenings, doors opening, and footsteps in the halls. But as the night progresses, the occurrences become more and more hostile, and it starts to feel like maybe it’s not ghosts they’re dealing with.

4. “May” – It’s pretty hard to write about this movie without giving anything away. May is girl with problems,

big problems. She has no friends, no social skills, and is incredibly awkward. The only thing she can connect with in the world is her obscenely creepy collection of dolls. She begins to develop a couple of very strained relationships with a couple of people including Anna Faris (Scary Movie) and Jeremy Sisto (You’ll know him as “Oh that guy, from that one thing”). But her friendship with the two of them isn’t what it seems and she begins to figure out a way to make the perfect companion.

3. “Slither” – Slither is AWESOME! It’s easily on of, if not THE, coolest creature features of the last decade. A sleepy hick town is slowly being infested with some strange alien bugs that seem to possess some of the local population. It’s up to the town sheriff (Nathan Fillion, Firefly) and a rag-tag group of townies to squash the invasion before it can spread through the rest of the country. Slither is fast paced, gory, and ridiculously fun.

2. “I Spit on Your Grave” – By far, the most controversial movie on this list, I Spit on Your Grave (ISPOYG) is one of the granddaddies of all the revenge horror. The movie revolves around a woman who rents a secluded cabin to work on her newest story, after a couple of days she is brutally assaulted by a few men from town. The men leave her for dead in her cabin, but over the next few days she is able to fully recover and start to exact her brutal revenge on the attackers. ISPOYG is one of the most brutal and disturbing movies you will ever watch, Fair warning, this movie is not for anyone who is squeamish or easily offended.

1. “Deadgirl” – One of the most bizarre movies ever made, “Deadgirl” is the story of two disassociated youths who skip school and discover a strange young woman chained up within the confines of an abandoned hospital. The trouble really begins when one wants to report the finding, and the other wants to keep her. A truly disturbing film, “Deadgirl” avoids the cheap scares and instead focuses on the horrors within each and every one of us.
