In addition to promising an end to Republicans’ out-of-con-trol spending, Democrats vowed to “drain the swamp” of corruption in Washington D.C. prior to win-

ning their Congressional majorities in 2006. Of course that was just an entrée for the real “hope and change” to come, as Barack Obama stormed to victory in the presidential election two years later promising to “change Washington” – and cut taxes for a majority of Americans.

In both cases, Democrats posi-

tioned themselves to the right of Republicans on fiscal issues – which obviously wasn’t very hard to do given the GOP’s record of excess – and then hammered away relent-lessly on Republican corruption. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, for example, blasted a “seriously ethical and possibly criminal streak” in the GOP.

“An ethical cloud hangs over the Capitol,” Pelosi said in 2005. “This culture of corruption must stop.”

Yet now – just over a year into Obama’s first term (and over three years since the Democratic takeover of Congress), has that “culture of corruption” stopped?

Of course not. In fact, both fis-cally and ethically, things have only grown more putrid in the Washington D.C. “swamp” that Democrats prom-ised to drain.

In addition to reneging on their promises of tax relief, Democrats have put the reckless and unsustain-able spending of their GOP prede-cessors on steroids, adding nearly $6 trillion to the national debt over the past three years alone. But they’ve also taken the low road ethically, as evidenced by the glorified bribes that were offered to (and accepted by) Senators Mary Landrieu and Ben Nelson in exchange for their support of Obama’s socialized medi-cine proposal. Then there are the scandals involving disgraced House Ways and Means Chairman Charlie Rangel and former Reps. William Jefferson and Eric Massa – as well as the numerous tax scandals that have plagued so many of Obama’s appointments to critical Cabinet posts.

More troubling, however, is

the case of Pennsylvania Rep. Joe Sestak, who has stated publicly on more than one occasion that the Obama administration offered him a high-paying job in the federal government in exchange for drop-ping out of a Democratic primary with party-switching Senator Arlen Specter.

“Yes,” Sestak said last month in response to a Philadelphia reporter who asked him if the White House had offered him a job to forego chal-lenging Specter.

Sestak later confirmed his account to MSNBC host Joe Scarborough.

“Something happened last July, before I got into the race, and I never got asked about it,” Sestak told Scarborough. “All of a sud-den, somebody asked me. And, you know, I answered it honestly. I just said yes.”

Obviously, it’s illegal for a federal official to bribe a candidate like that, and while the Obama-friendly mainstream media has largely fallen asleep on the Sestak scandal (choosing instead to focus on the lurid details of Rep. Massa’s fall from grace), it’s pretty clear that the allegation has struck a nerve.

First, the White House issued a blanket denial of Sestak’s charge – although it did so anonymously, a move which raised plenty of eyebrows. Also, when pressed on the issue three days after the allegation was first made, White House spokesman Robert Gibbs told a reporter “I haven’t looked into this.” He promised to get answers, but a week later Gibbs apolo-gized, saying “I have not made any progress on that.”

Sadly, this isn’t the only thing Obama and his Congressional allies haven’t “made any progress on.”

In addition to abandoning middle class tax cuts and spending restraint in favor of tax hikes and record deficit spending, Obama’s “hope and change” have also been replaced by corrupt insider deal-making and Gangland-style bribery.

The end result? As was the case three years ago, Washington’s “swamp” is still in need of a good draining.

Harry Reid Caught Red-Handed

Looks can be deceiving. When pundits talk about lead-

ers waltzing America into a future of European-style socialism, Barack Obama and Nancy Pelosi get most of the attention. But their work wouldn’t be successful without the devot-ed support of the Senate Majority Leader, Harry Reid, D-Nev. While long appearing to be a trusted public servant, Reid is anything but. He has begged, bribed and bullied Obama’s left-leaning agenda through the tra-

ditionally more conservative U.S. Senate. Reid’s biggest victory to date is the passage of ObamaCare late last year in the Senate.

However, Reid is the only member of this Washington power troika at risk of losing his job in November.

He recently hit a new low in Nevada polls. In a January survey taken by the Las Vegas Review-Journal, 52 percent had an unfavor-able opinion of Senator Reid; 33 percent had a favorable view; and another 15 percent said they were neutral. These are terrible numbers for such a long serving official.

This is why Reid’s defeat has become a passion for conservatives nationwide.

Floyd was in Las Vegas this week to release ads he created for the Republican Majority Campaign PAC. The ad condemns Reid’s involvement with casino giant MGM Mirage and their partner, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the supreme ruler of the Arab Gulf emirate of Dubai.

Faced with financial ruin and the mothballing of MGM’s ambi-tious CityCenter project, James Murren, the CEO of MGM, recruit-ed Sheikh Al Maktoum for a finan-cial bailout. At the same time, Reid called and lobbied bankers to save MGM’s $8.5 billion project. And now Murren cannot say enough to repay Reid, recently remarking to Vegas Confidential, “I think it’s un-Nevadan, unpatriotic, to go against Senator Reid and I will call out those who try.”

So with the supportive help of Harry Reid, the Dubai/ MGM part-nership was born.

The problem is that Dubai is a country with a terrible human rights record. Human Rights Watch, ABC News, the BBC and others have documented how workers have been held in terrible conditions, against their will, equating the practice to slavery.

Next we learned that Dubai wasn’t as rich as they claimed. Now the partnership is troubled and many

innocent Nevadans may lose their jobs. So this leaves Harry Reid’s fin-gerprints all over the failed partner-ship between MGM and an unsavory dictator.

The RMC Pac’s new advertise-ment focuses on the close relation-ship between Reid, Murren and Al Maktoum. Taxpayers and citizens of Nevada are paying a terrible price because of their collusion. Education and other essential services are being cut in Nevada while MGM and Al Maktoum lobby against reforms that would make gaming companies pay the cost of their own regula-tion. While at the same time they short-change Nevada’s budget and citizens, the MGM leader and this Middle Eastern Sheikh are fighting to re-elect their favorite political protector, Reid.

These and a multitude of other odd connections explain why Harry Reid, the self proclaimed “poor pub-lic servant from Searchlight,” is now a multi-millionaire.

The winds of change are blow-ing for Harry Reid. Nevadans have had enough. They are smart people --and will no longer stand for Reid’s support of wealthy special interests as he ignores public opinion. Your gravy train is coming to an end, Mr. Reid.FLOYD and MARY BETH BROWN

Last week, a group of my friends and I decided we had enough of Harry Reid’s and MGM Mirage’s hypocrisy and did something about it.

The Legacy Committee and the Republican Majority Campaign political action committees, Willie Horton commercial cre-ator Floyd Brown and I created and ran some commercials (www.exposeharry.com) detailing the connections between MGM Mirage, that noted defender of human rights, Sheik Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, their partner in city center, CEO Jim Murren and, that noted expert on health care and quick-buck land deals, Harry Reid.

Even before the spot first ran on Channel 13, MGM’s lawyers were screaming like stuck pigs.

They wrote letters. They wrote corrected letters. They made demands. They demanded we read their demands. They told us they knew we read their demands because we posted their silly letters on our web sites.

They did everything but act like grown ups.

The insulting part is that they seemed to think that they could intimidate us.

You can disagree with our premise which is that there is a connection between one of the worst Senators (and that takes in a lot of territory) in the nation, a very troubled public company whose CEO endorsed that senator and one of their huge partners who—it is common knowledge—used slave labor to build his own city in the middle east.

You could tell us that you didn’t like the way we juxtaposed Reid, Murren and an Arab Sheik who many people are inclined to dislike under any circumstances.

You could point out that MGM Mirage is Nevada’s largest sin-gle employer and thus worthy of special attention no matter how stupid their management is. In other words that they are too big to fail.

You could tell us all of those things and still be within the bounds of reasonable debate, even though you would be wrong..

But when you DEMAND that we not only pull the spot but

issue an apology or you’ll, well, do something bad to us, I have one thing to say.

Grow up.

The letters in question were signed by Frank Shreck of the Brownstein, Hyatt, Farber and Shreck law firm which is reputed to be the best gaming firm in the nation. In fact, Frank Shreck is supposed be a grown up who knows gaming law better than anybody.

Of course, his client, MGM Mirage just got their butts kicked out of New Jersey because even New Jersey, the home of the guy they modeled Don Corleone after in the movie (Sam the Plumber) didn’t think that Pansy Ho, who, in China, is the equivalent of John Gotti’s daughter was a suitable part-ner for MGM in Macau.

Maybe Shreck needs to spend more time worrying about MGM’s associates and less time writing letters to us.

But in any event, what we have here is a company which appears to be willing to cut corners to get things done, to use their fancy lawyers to try and intimidate people who disagree with them, and throw some political muscle around to make sure they get what they want..

That’s fine if you can get away with it, but you can’t.

Jim Murren isn’t Bennie Binnion, Jackie Gaughan, Ralph Engelstadt, Bill Boyd, Steve Wynn or Bill Bennett. Hell, he’s not even one of Barazini’s chimps.

He couldn’t even wear their jockstraps.

He’s the latest in a string of CEOs who has allowed stupid move after stupid move and, in the true refuge of scoun-drels, denied the obvious, all the while telling the taxpayers of the state what we must do to accommodate him.

Here’s a news flash, big guy.

You and your fancy lawyers would do real well to stop giving us—and I mean the entire state—advice. Because you are hardly qualified. Whiners, crybabies and fools rarely are.

Balanced Budget, Or Spending Limit?

On March 2nd, in response to the escalating sovereign debt crisis spread-ing globally, House Blue Dog Democrats introduced a “Balanced Budget Amendment.” A day later, the House Republican Caucus introduced their own “Spending Limit Amendment.”

So, which is better?A balanced budget sounds good, but if not coupled with limits on either

taxation or spending, would become the means for annual automatic tax increases to “pay” for unbridled, ever-escalating spending.

Which, even without any amendments may be the plan Democrats have in mind anyway.

House Democrats, after all, have just presented another “deficit-neutral” version of ObamaCare. So, how do they balance their budget? In large part, with cuts in physician pay and Medicare, and by raising taxes by some $438 billion, including a new “3.8 percent tax would be imposed on interest, dividends, capital gains and other investment income for individuals mak-ing more than $200,000 a year and couples making more than $250,000,” as reported by FOXNews.com.

In short, to provide government-run health care to over 30 million new people, House Democrats plan to reduce quality, ration senior care, and put heavy burdens on an already fragile economy. All of which tells us a little bit about what a life might be like under the Democrats’ Balanced Budget Amendment.

In contrast, under the Spending Limit Amendment, federal spending would always be limited to 20 percent of the Gross Domestic Product except

by declaration of war or two-thirds votes in both houses of Congress. That would inherently limit taxation and spending to what the economy

could afford to pay for.Not so under the Balanced Budget Amendment. For example, if Congress

votes to spend $4 trillion in a year, it has to find $4 trillion in revenue unless the declaration of war provision is invoked, or there is a three-fifths vote in Congress to deficit-spend.

Curiously, for the first time ever in the history of the Federal Constitution, the “Balanced Budget Amendment” includes entitlements: disbursements to the Federal Old-Age and Survivors Insurance Trust Fund and the Federal Disability Insurance Trust Fund can never be cut. Although, there appears to be no provision prohibiting the Congress from borrowing money out of those funds to pay for other items.

In short, a balanced budget can be good, but only if it includes a spend-ing limit. Otherwise, raising taxes annually will become Congress’ preferred means to pay for so-called “mandatory” spending on entitlements.

The hour grows late, and a spending limit is exactly the right prescrip-tion. As ALG News has previously reported, the U.S. could have its credit downgraded as soon as 2014, which would result in much higher interest rates, higher taxes, an even weaker dollar, and a devastated economy. As soon as possible, the U.S. needs to reduce interest payments on its debt. That number must stay below 14 percent. If it doesn’t, the U.S. Triple-A debt rat-ing will be downgraded.

The nation has to decide how it will restrain itself. Congress needs to be constitutionally constrained in how much it can spend, not constitutionally permitted to tax as much as it wants to maintain the entitlement state. The Spending Limit Amendment fits the bill. ROBERT ROMANORobert Romano is the Senior Editor of ALG News Bureau.

Commentary: Albert ThomasSelf Defense And The Stock Market

Have you seen the newsreels of the rioting and chaos that is going on in Greece?

It could be coming here. No, I am not a nut case, but have been a pro-fessional financial investor of all types for several decades. Those who are rioting are welfare recipients and union workers who are not getting all the freebies and excessive wages they were promised.

Everyone wants to blame someone. Start by looking in the mirror. It was the politicians who were voted in by the rioters. They promised more than they could deliver. Now those promises cannot be kept so the people are rioting. Very stupid, but that is what happens to every welfare society. Socialism is wonderful until it runs out of your money.

Don’t let this happen to you. Self defense.I watch the stock market. It has been going up for a year. The Dow Jones

Industrial Average broke from over 14,000 to 6,500 and decimated many 401Ks and retirement accounts. The government created what they call a “stimulus plan”. It is money to stimulate the economy. In all of history it has not worked.

That is done by manufacturing money out of thin air by the Federal Reserve. It is also called debt. Any fool knows you can’t spend your way to success by adding to your debt. May I remind you that every stimulus dollar is money taken from you, the taxpayer, who must repay it.

Oh, you didn’t know you had to pay it back with higher taxes. Well, you

do. There is no free lunch. When excess money is created and has no place to go it usually ends up

in the stock market. Money is fuel that makes the market go up, but when that money eventually stops coming the market will fall. That is where self defense comes in.

Every investor must protect his retirement plan with an exit strategy. If you do not have a plan to protect your account you will lose your money.

The simplest exit strategy is called a stop loss order placed with your broker. You must decide how much each of your equities you will allow to go down before you sell. If you own a mutual fund you must place the sell order.

For example, if you own a stock you bought at $20 per share and it is now $40 per share you do not want to see it go back down to $20. The prudent trader places a permanent stop loss order at $36 or a trailing stop of 10%. It is not wise to sell out at $40 as it might go to $60 followed by the 10% stop. Let the market tell you when to get out. Listen to the market.

Because of the socialistic programs being promoted by Washington you must become a defensive investor. Do not think about how much money you will make. Think about protecting what you have.

A new investment paradigm is upon us. Become defensive. AL THOMAS Al Thomas’ book, “If It Doesn’t Go Up, Don’t Buy It!” has helped thousands of people make money and keep their profits with his simple 2-step method. Read the first chapter at www.mutualfundmagic.com and discover why he’s the man that Wall Street does not want you to know.

The Long Hot SummerELY―This summer will be, interesting to say the least. The ten supporters of Harry Reid will be pounding the drum, like so

many of them, to “not change horses in the middle of the stream”, to stay the course with the current majority leader of the US Senate.

Reid’s detractors point out that Harry hasn’t really brought much home. John Murtha he ain’t.

I would love to be a fly on the wall of a Chachas family gathering here in Ely. The split between Republicans and Democrats in the family is there, and one has to wonder what they think about Cousin John running against Barefoot Harry.

The races for the County Commission will all be three-way dances. Recently appointed county commissioner Edward John “Robin” Bell will have not only an Independent American Party opponent in Jack Ward, but a Democrat candidate – either Doug Dashiell or Michael Lemich. Bell, who could have had a cakewalk to election to a full term, will have a dif-ficult time following his initial vote against the million dollar boondoggle of the Emergency Response Complex, then his vote FOR the complex after a recess at the commission’s meeting on November 18th. It was obvious that Bell had been pressured into changing his vote, but at the January 13th commission meeting he explained his vote from prepared notes.

“This is my statement for the record:” “I was not coerced or pressured by anyone to change my vote regarding

the proposed emergency response facility.“I changed my vote because of the additional comments and information

presented to the commissioners by the taxpaying constituents in attendance at the last county commission meeting.

“At 10:13 a.m., the commission recessed for a short break. I got a cup of coffee and immediately returned to my chair at the commissioners’ desk. The other commissioners were not at the desk at this time. At that moment, I made the decision to change my vote, which each of us has the right to. I stand by my vote without reservation.”

No one bought a word of it.

Commissioner Rayleen Makley (I always saw it as RaLeene in the newspaper and commission paperwork, but it was spelled this way in the candidate lists) will be facing serious opposition as well, not only from

Republican Bill Ward, but from Independent American Party candidate John Lampros. Lampros has served in government for the better part of three decades but resigned from the Ely City Council in 2006. Lampros most recently spoke out against the Emergency Response Complex in Ely at the County Commission Meeting, quoting:

“We do not need this facility. We were told Monday by our governor that the state is going into a depression. You had two legislators here who also told you that same thing. And your reaction was zilch. I find it really, really insulting. I’m an old time politician - and I’ve held many boards, more than any of you have held - and I have never seen this disdain for the taxpayer. I’ve never seen the arrogance in my life as I’m seeing right now.”

Lampros referred to Assemblyman Pete Goicoechea, who told the com-mission that if they got in trouble again, they would most likely be on their own:

“You will have to determine what services you need in your commu-nity, what you can pay for, and what you won’t be able to pay for. At this point the state is not going to be able to supply anything. Your first priority should be looking at those programs you need - EMS, public safety, health and human services.”

“The bottom line is the economy isn’t rebounding, and we clearly can’t tax our way out of it. I’m afraid we’re going to end up cutting our way out of it.”

“I don’t think the state’s going to go bankrupt, but I think maybe it was fortunate when White Pine County underwent its economic crisis that the state was there (at that time) with the manpower and ability to help you through that. If it were to happen now, I think they would have to leave you standing.”

“Bury your tin cans, folks, because it’s going to get a little stark.” Despite that warning, the commission went full speed ahead toward

their own Emergency Response Complex. Why? Because the county desired then, and desires now, to force the city of Ely to succumb to the will of the county.

There is no desire among Ms Makley and the other commissioners to work with the city. They want the city crushed and to do as they will with the last remaining scraps of money.

Will they be able to make it happen?Watch this space.

The Simple (Yet Powerful) Results Of Spending Time With God

I remember a time when Dave and I needed a miracle every month to pay our bills. I had quit my job so I could spend more time preparing for full-time ministry, which cut our income in half.

Each time I paid the bills, I would get upset because we didn’t have enough money. It became a routine. I’d be sitting at the table in one room with the bills, checkbook and calculator in front of me, while Dave was in the other room, playing with the kids, laughing and having fun.

It eventually led to a conversa-tion like this…

Me: Every month we don’t have the money to pay our bills.

Dave: Yes, and every month God comes through.

Me: Well, how is He gonna come through this month? Why don’t you do something?!

Dave: What do you want me to do? Do you believe we’re in the will of God?

Me: Yes, I believe we’re in the will of God.

Dave: Do you believe God told you to quit your job?

Me: Yes, I believe God told me to quit my job.

Dave: Well, has God been taking care of us every month?

Me: Yes, yes… (exasperated sigh)

Dave: Okay, Joyce, we’re in the will of God, we’re givers, God prom-ises to meet our needs… What else do you want me to do?

What I wanted was for him to count the money with me and get upset too. But what I needed to do was spend time with God, rather than the checkbook.

Quality Time Is the KeySpending quality time with God

is so important. And there are many

promises in the Bible about what happens when we do this. For exam-ple, Psalm 16:11 says that in God’s presence, there is fullness of joy. And Nehemiah 8:10 tells us that God’s joy is our strength.

The devil wants to steal our joy. He’s not really after our stuff, but he’ll go for the stuff to get our joy, like he did with me when I was upset about our finances. If he can get our joy, he knows we won’t be strong in the Lord. And we’ll lose our focus on God.

We need to focus on God and our relationship with Him.

In fact, we’ve got to desperately require Him! When we do, we real-ize that He’s given us authority over the enemy. This means you don’t have to let the devil run your life – you don’t have to believe his lies. You can resist him and bind him as

you pray in faith for God’s will to be done.

Now, we can’t stop the devil from coming against us, but we can overcome him each time – if we exercise the authority of Jesus and decide not to put up with him. It’s true. If you really believe God hears your prayers and you know what the Bible says, the devil can’t control your life!

The Power of Faith and a Good Attitude

I want you to get the revelation that God has given you – a born-again Christian – authority over your enemy. And one way you can use it is by keeping a good attitude when hard times come.

Romans 8:28 is a scripture that’s quoted a lot. It says that when we are partnering with God, “all things work together and are [fitting into a

plan] for good to and for those who love God and are called according to [His] design and purpose.”

This verse is a promise to us that no matter what happens in our lives, if we will keep praying, keep loving God, and continue in the purpose He has for us, good things will come.

I want to encourage you to live by faith, not fear. Keep your focus on God, trusting that He’ll do what-ever needs to be done in His way and His time. And in the meantime, you can enjoy the life He’s given you today. JOYCE MEYERFor more on this topic, order Joyce’s four-CD series Simple Prayer…Simple Life.
