Ezra’s Consecration
“For Ezra prepared his heart to seek the law of the LORD, and to do it, and to teach in
Israel statues and judgments.” (Ezra 7:10)
EZRA led a group of Israelites from the captivity of Babylon back to Je-
rusalem. He was a great spiritual leader of the Jews in the days of their re-
turn to the land. Here in our verse is expressed the great consecration of
Ezra. In it is preparation, meditation, application, and proclamation.
Preparation. “Ezra prepared his heart.” The heart is where you began any
endeavor if you wish to succeed. The reason many folk fail is because they
do not have their heart in what they are doing. In our text, preparing the
heart not only involved getting the heart dedicated; but it also involved a
proper relationship with God. Getting the heart right with God is the most
important preparation of all. For it prepares one for eternity.
Meditation. “Seek the law of the LORD.” Ezra was concerned about
what God was saying and how God wanted him to live, so he would study
the Scriptures earnestly. He would spend much time meditating on the
Word of God. Many are the shipwrecks of human lives in society who be-
came shipwrecks because they paid little attention to God’s Word. They
scorned God’s law but to the ruin of their lives.
Application. “To do it.” Ezra not only studied the Word of God to know
it, but he studied it to also do it. It is one thing to know the Scriptures; it is
another to do what the Scriptures say to do. We should all know the Scrip-
tures, but do not stop there—apply the Scriptures to your life. Ezra did not
study the Scripture to satisfy his curiosity or to just fill his mind with facts,
rather he studied it to live it.
Proclamation. “To teach in Israel statutes and judgments.” Ezra desired
to teach the Word of God. Teaching the Word is so important. We need to
teach the Word of God more than anything else. But you cannot teach the
Word unless you have first done as Ezra—prepared your heart, studied the
Word, and lived the Word. We first earnestly learn and live the Word, then
we can teach it.
