UPDATE on the latest project of our parish Youth Ministry!

Support our Blessed Sacrament Team! This week, our youth logged a collective 19 miles on Tuesday and another 27 miles on Thursday, and those are just the miles we traveled as a group! Each person on our team has an individual goal to

walk, roll, run, or bike at least 60 miles before May 31, and also raise a minimum of $100 in support for Faith in Action, a volunteer program providing free services to older adults.

You can help us by following the link below, selecting “Blessed Sacrament” Team Fundraiser, and then sponsoring an individual or individuals of your choice with a gift of any amount.

https://runsignup.com/Race/WV/Charleston/PedalwithPurpose2021

Thank you for helping our youth to live the principles

of Catholic Social Teaching, especially:

#2: Call to Family, Community, and Participation #4: Option for the Poor and Vulnerable

#6: Solidarity!

PURLS: our parish knitting ministry will meet via zoom this Tuesday at 7:00pm. If you would like to see what they're up to, please email Peg Nagem at [email protected] to receive the zoom link. PURLS has also received a huge donation of new, full skeins of very good quality yarn in a variety of colors and textures. If you would like to see it and possibly use some, please notify Peg or call our parish office to come into our Library to look it over.

Vocations

SPIRITUAL BOUQUET Deacon Phillip Szabo is the only man who will be ordained to the priesthood for our diocese this year. His ordination will take place in Charlestown on May 29. As our parish gift to Phillip, our Vocation Committee invites all to contribute brief statements of commitment to prayer, fasting, almsgiving, other sacrifices and works of mercy offered for Phillip's spiritual needs and intentions. Please send yours to John Finnell at [email protected] or by mailing or bringing a hard copy to the parish office (note the new PO Box!) or place it in the Sunday Offering box when you come to Mass. We will create a single large greeting card with all of our commitments in a beautiful "spiritual bouquet". I also encourage you to mail a brief greeting and good wishes to Phillip at: Mount St. Mary's Seminary, 16300 Old Emmitsburg Rd, Emmitsburg MD 21727.

Amen.

Let Us Pray – The Rosary

LETTER OF HIS HOLINESS POPE FRANCIS TO THE FAITHFUL FOR THE MONTH OF MAY 2020

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

The month of May is approaching, a time when the People of God express with particular intensity their love and devotion for the Blessed Virgin Mary. It is traditional in this month to pray the Rosary at home within the family. The restrictions of the pandemic have made us come to appreciate all the more this “family” aspect, also from a spiritual point of view.

For this reason, I want to encourage everyone to rediscover the beauty of praying the Rosary at home in the month of May. This can be done either as a group or individually; you can decide according to your own situations, making the most of both opportunities. The key to doing this is always simplicity, and it is easy also on the internet to find good models of prayers to follow.

I am also providing two prayers to Our Lady that you can recite at the end of the Rosary, and that I myself will pray in the month of May, in spiritual union with all of you. I include them with this letter so that they are available to everyone.

Dear brothers and sisters, contemplating the face of Christ with the heart of Mary our Mother will make us even more united as a spiritual family and will help us overcome this time of trial. I keep all of you in my prayers, especially those suffering most greatly, and I ask you, please, to pray for me. I thank you, and with great affection I send you my blessing.

Next Sunday's Mass Readings – May 30, 2021

The Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity

Reading I Deuteronomy 4:32-34, 39-40 Moses said to the people: "Ask now of the days of old, before your time, ever since God created man upon the earth; ask from one end of the sky to the other: Did anything so great ever happen before? Was it ever heard of? Did a people ever hear the voice of God speaking from the midst of fire, as you did, and live? Or did any god venture to go and take a nation for himself from the midst of another nation, by testings, by signs and wonders, by war, with strong hand and outstretched arm, and by great terrors, all of which the LORD, your God, did for you in Egypt before your very eyes? This is why you must now know, and fix in your heart, that the LORD is God in the heavens above and on earth below, and that there is no other. You must keep his statutes and commandments that I enjoin on you today, that you and your children after you may prosper, and that you may have long life on the land which the LORD, your God, is giving you forever." Responsorial Psalm 33:4-5, 6, 9, 18-19, 20, 22 R. Blessed the people the Lord has chosen to be his own. Upright is the word of the LORD, and all his works are trustworthy. He loves justice and right; of the kindness of the Lord the earth is full. R. Blessed the people the Lord has chosen to be his own. By the word of the LORD the heavens were made; by the breath of his mouth all their host. For he spoke, and it was made; he commanded, and it stood forth. R. Blessed the people the Lord has chosen to be his own. See, the eyes of the LORD are upon those who fear him, upon those who hope for his kindness, To deliver them from death and preserve them in spite of famine. R. Blessed the people the Lord has chosen to be his own. Our soul waits for the LORD, who is our help and our shield. May your kindness, O LORD, be upon us who have put our hope in you. R. Blessed the people the Lord has chosen to be his own. Reading II Romans 8:14-17 Brothers and sisters: For those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you received a Spirit of adoption, through whom we cry, “Abba, Father!” The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if only we suffer with him so that we may also be glorified with him. Gospel Matthew 28:16-20 The eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had ordered them. When they all saw him, they worshiped, but they doubted. Then Jesus approached and said to them, "All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age."

Editorial note: This article delves into a dimension of church history that I have not found presented anywhere else. It may not be the last word on the subject, but it certainly helps us to understand how a distorted understanding of obedience set us up for the tragedy of clergy sexual abuse of children. JHF
