aliceduparcq Quelle merveille... splashy, sparkling, salty delights from la reine @christine.nagel in @hermes Eau des Merveilles Bleue, out this month. It's atmospheric but not in that 80s ozonic way; this is more gentle, more nurturing, like going home to your parents' house on the beach in Dorset and inhaling a beautiful, soul-lifting, penetrating lungful of sea air, softened by dry beach grasses and warm, dusty sand. It glows, not in a blinding ray but more like slowly radiating halo. And although I don't have the notes list I think that's down to a touch of mint perhaps, a clean just-ripped mint rather than the sweeter After Eight kind. There's a lovely quote from Christine about her thinking behind this scent: "The wonder of Hermès is rooted in childhood, when our eyes are open to the world, and marvel at everything. I marveled at the pebbles, wet from the ocean; they had such a particular colour and luminosity, and I discovered on them a salty, mineral taste...". Say 'bonjour ma belle' to the much-anticipated new Mon Guerlain perfume, brought to you by fragrance fairygodfather @thierrywasser (I do wish he were my godfather) and available to buy this week*. It is everything you want in a Guerlain scent: inviting, velvety-rich and hedonistic, and as a quick flavour reference I’d say it's in the lavender-infused vanilla panacotta sphere. If that’s up your street, keep reading for more info… •The main notes are, first and foremost, lavender – a dusty and cloudy sort, not soapy at all. Vanilla for addictive sweetness and an enveloping maternal warmth. Jasmine for deep, heady floral decadence. Then a beautiful sandalwood that’s like freshly-chopped wood smothered in buttery wax polish. Somewhere is a fruity note - think confit strawberries seeped in a glossy vanilla syrup. All together it is creamy and plump, generous and welcoming, and the type of perfume to embed itself into your pores, hair and clothes to give you a memorable, distinguishing signature scent that your partner, children and friends will immediately associate to you. Which, I think, is the marker of a proper perfume. Heady, almost drug-like in its hypnotic steaminess, @vilhelm_parfumerie Don’t Tell Jasmine is for purists who want to smell like they've been pushed up against a blossom-packed jasmine trellis and the winding tangle of arterial vines have wrapped themselves round every part of your body. The fresh, creamy, sun-flooded vibe is enhanced with lemon, petal musk* and kir (a syrupy blackcurrant liqueur). It’s like a walk through a dense forest on a late summer afternoon with bright flickers of sharp lemon peel pinging through like sunbeams, and an aromatic camphorous Clary Sage note that makes it a little trippy. I'm thinking mythology, Pan nymph god vibes, mystical shimmery forcefields on a lush woodland backdrop. Except that time when Poppy was 1 day old and she came to visit me in hospital: I could smell her down the hallway (pregnancy really ramps up the old truffle snout) and I roared with visceral rage that she must wash her neck and wrists with NHS Hibiscrub before entering as to not "drench my tiny new baby in that burning hell

The original fresh, peppery, spicy rose scent has been slathered with a hefty whip of party cream, bringing ingredients like cherry, vanilla, caramel and bitter almond to the table, and a Madeleine accord that evokes soft buttery cakes laced with orange blossom essence and dusted with icing sugar. aliceduparcq Happy National Fragrance Day! This morning I'm spritzing on the mighty, the majestic, the mind-blowing @hermes Terre d'Hermès. It's actually Dr dP's fragrance, but I swipe a little from time to time 😜. This is, quite simply, a masterclass in perfection: a mammoth hunk of just-chopped Cedar wood, earthy vetiver and bracing citrus with this overall off-the-scale freshness that penetrates your lungs and makes your ribcage quite physically expand like some kind of insane scent superhero prepping to fly. And that's how it stays: ready, poised, full of energy, not dimming down or warming up, or smoothing out whatsoever. Big, bold, fresh, imposing from start to finish. As the far-too-fabulous-for-PR @mbmdher says: "it is the most perfectly balanced fragrance." It is constant, consistent, reliable, handsome and honest, and my couldn't have chosen a 💕more fitting signature scent. I still get a flash of tingly skin when he sprays it. It's the one I used to reach for when life got rather testing: when my mum and dad were in the throws of horrific illness, during spells of shitty, shitty bad luck in the baby department, when the magazine I worked for closed down and I was made redundant, and at 32 I had no idea where my next paycheck would come from. Having John's fragrance around me was a small, short but powerful hit of comfort and strength. Today though, I'm going to need it for slightly more superficial purposes: to kick my lard-arse into gear for the spin class in an hour and the three deadlines I need to meet by Friday. Hermès: get me there in style baby.

aliceduparcq "BUT WHAT DOES IT SMELL LIKE?" is possibly the most frequently-asked question I get when a hot new fume is on the way. Chanel's upcoming Gabrielle is essentially a sparkling floral number with a golden, expensive warmth. Brighter and less boozy than No5 but more opulent than No19.When I smell it I picture a power-tribe girlband of white flowers having the swankiest party of their lives, shimmying around in sequin mini dresses. And they all bring their own flavour to the dancefloor... Jasmine: succulent and steamy. Ylang Ylang: balmy and exotic. Orange Blossom: sweet and glimmering. Tuberose: filthysexy, voluptuous and indecent. And then the mirrorball starts spinning and those sequins flash like glitter, pinging bright darts of sharp grapefruit, torn stalk and unripe tart blackcurrant around the room, freshening up the whole vibe. Amazingly, the lights never go off: those shimmering sparks stay with you the whole time so you won't ever feel self-conscious wearing such rich, heady flowers. In the lift at work, in a breakfast meeting, on the school run, during a date.. it really doesn't scream !PERFUME!, but just hints at a halo of clean, pretty scent. Saying that, it's still hefty enough to embed itself in your clothes, your scarf, and be recognised by your lover, friends and kids. It's not shocking or controversial or trendy or complex or divisive, but who wants to be any of those?
