For many workers engagedin the mining industryin Australia the experi-ence of work stress is a verypersonal and private issue.

Behind tough exteriors, many share the experience ofdifficulty sleeping, fatigue, feelings of anxiety, lonelinessand depression.

This often goes hand inhand with physical symptomssuch as an exacerbation ofmusculoskeletal problems andother existing health com-plaints.

Making good money hasbitter sweet consequences.

For some workers, thedangling carrot encouragesthem to put up with a workingenvironment they are havingtrouble adapting to even thoughthey might be better suitedpsychologically to working ina lower paid job closer to home.

Ultimately both the organ-isation and the worker mayend up paying a price for their

stoic endurance as the stressbegins to undermine theirhealth, relationships and abilityto function across both workand personal domains.

This work stress is alsobehind the relatively high attri-tion rate in workers in theirfirst year in the industry.

Surprisingly, research intothe implications of work stressin the mining industry on thephysical and psychologicalhealth and work performanceof the workforce is still in itsinfancy, behind that of researchinto other high risk industrieswhere there is a clearer under-standing of the nature of therelationships between workstress, mental and physicalhealth, and work performance.

Based on Australian mentalhealth statistics however treare irrefutable indicators thatthe mining industry in generalneeds to embrace a broadercontext to the notion of ‘zeroharm’.

With more than one millionAustralians suffering fromeither depression or anxietyin a given year and with researchshowing that both depressionand anxiety increases the like-lihood of workplace accidentor injury, it is clear that miningcompanies need to developfurther their understanding of

Occupational Health and SafetyIssues as it relates to stress andoverall fatigue.

There have been manyincidents where mining stressor fatigue has been directlyrelated to an injury or evendeath, both on and off mine-sites. Long hours and hot seatchangeovers have seen cars

crushed and people injured, and have lead to threats ofstrike action at coal minessuch as Collie, where workersare up in arms over the poten-tial hazard it poses.

Two fatalities involvingdrive in drive out workers inYeppoon and Dysart in 2007and 2008 were caused by

Dealing with workstress in silence is no longer theonly option.

They motivate you to go further than you imagined. They fill you with pride, respect and satisfaction. They are badgesof honour. And at INPEX, extraordinary achievements happen every day. Recently, we achieved the Final InvestmentDecision on our US$34 billion Ichthys LNG Project. It’s an exciting time as we prepare to begin the construction of asemi-submersible central processing facility (CPF), a floating, production, storage and offloading (FPSO) vessel, 885kmof subsea pipeline and a two train onshore LNG facility on Darwin’s Middle Arm Peninsula. To meet the demands of thisenormous undertaking, we have a range of roles available for talented oil and gas specialists to join our team.

These are outstanding opportunities to shape an enormous infrastructure project at a critical stage of development.Join a team of leading oil and gas professionals driving innovation on the largest scale imaginable. Experience aclose-knit working environment offering the cutting-edge training and support you need to build an exceptionalcareer. It’s time you make your mark extraordinary.

common problem for workersin mining and an integratedapproach at the organisationallevel can do a lot in mitigat-ing the risk of the negativeimpact of this ‘stress creep’.”

Gibbons said the Autoge-nic Training Programme equipsworkers with tools that buildup their mental and physicalresilience so that they can dealmore effectively with both per-sonal and work-place stressors.

“When the workforce learnsto self-regulate their psychophys-iological responses there isimproved staff morale, lowerstaff turnover, lower incidenceof work place accidents, reducednumber of stress and otherinjury claims, less sick leaveand higher productivity.”

She described how theAutogenic mental exercisesguide you into an ‘AutogenicState’ where you are relaxedboth mentally and physicallyallowing for the regenerativemechanisms in the mind andbody to kick in.

“For this reason I call itthe Triple R technique”, shesaid.

“It allows your mind andbody to rest, repair and regen-erate. It targets the detrimen-tal effects of the build-up ofnegative day to day stress thatcan over time make us unwelland erode our ability to thinkand perform. I have seenworkers, despite their bestefforts, reach a point at workwhere they feel they can’t go

on. They either leave their job,go on Workers Compensationor carry on at work at a muchreduced capacity, often makingmistakes and affecting themorale of those who workwith them.”

One area of prime impor-tance in the mining industryis the mitigation of the risksassociated with fatigue.

“It is really important thatwe understand the psychophys-iological dynamics of fatigueif the mining industry is tomake true inroads into thisproblem,” Gibbons stated.

“As we are aware, fatigueis a ticking time bomb. Peoplehave what we call, a BasicRest Activity Cycle. Duringthe day we have a period of

approximately 90 minutes ofalert activity followed by a 20minute period when we feelfatigued and should strictlyspeaking be resting. Peoplecan override the fatigue periodup to a point but it is unlikelythat levels of hypervigilancewill be as high in this phaseof the cycle. With AutogenicTraining, however, we canautomatically switch on our‘Para-Sympathetic NervousSystem’ (the rest, repair andregeneration mode) and indulgein the ultimate power nap. Ina very short period of timeyou can feel completelyrecharged and extend yourperiod of hypervigilance atwork.”

“Based on improvementsin imaging technology we nowcan see the scientific processesbehind the Autogenic responsesin motion, right down to themolecular level,” she said.

“This is a truly excitingtime for individuals and organ-isations alike as we now haveat our fingertips a simple buthighly effective evidence-basedtool which is proven to enhanceOccupational Health and Safetyoutcomes.”

By using autogenic training, workers can relax their system while remaining alert, Gibbons claims.
