Petoskey Middle School
Patch and Pin Exposing students to a variety of positive experiences is an important
part of the middle school philosophy. With the goal to help our stu-
dents develop into well-rounded individuals in mind, the teaching staff
at PMS initiated the Patch and Pin Awards many years ago.
Students who earn the minimum number of points during the first
three marking periods qualify for the Patch and Pin Award:
6th grade—7 points 7th grade—8 points 8th grade—8 points
We offer students the opportunity to earn points in three areas: aca-
demic, citizenship, and involvement.
Academic Points: Students with a GPA of 3.0 or higher, with no grade
lower than a B, earn one point for the quarter (three points maximum
per year).
Citizenship Points: Students with citizenship marks of all 3’s (“Good”)
or 4’s (“Exemplary) earn one point each quarter (three points maxi-
mum).
Involvement in school sponsored clubs and activities: Petoskey Middle
School is proud to offer a wide variety of school sponsored after-school
clubs and activities in areas such as athletics, art, drama, community
service, technology, and more. A full list of opportunities are outlined
in the student handbook, though they are subject to change as activities
or clubs are added or discontinued. Each activity that a student partici-
pates in is worth one point. There are no maximum amount of points
in this category.
The Patch and Pin is an excellent way for all students to work towards the Presidential Academic Award, which is presented to 8th grade stu-dents who have maintained a 3.5 or better grade point average, suc-cessfully passed the state-determined test (M-STEP), and scored in the 90% percentile or higher in both reading and math on a nationally-normed standardized test (NWEA). Receiving this award is a very high honor for which a student receives a certificate and pin from the Presi-dent of the United States.
Patch and Pin awards are presented to students at the end-of-year
awards ceremony for each grade level. Please talk to your child about
this opportunity. It is a great recognition for getting involved!

Wyatt M. (6th grade), Isabelle D. (7th grade), Ella V. (8th grade), all were awarded top honors. There were 65 entries, about 20 per grade level, from four school districts and the competition was very close. The winning essays have been for-warded and received at state level for judging by Deborah Davis, MIDAR State History Chairman. State level judging should be completed late February and the winners will be contacted at that time. Congratulations to Wyatt, Isabelle, and Ella! You should be proud of yourselves!
