EMERGENCY BRAKINGASSISTANCE SYSTEM

In an emergency, this systemenables the optimum braking pres-sure to be reached more quickly, thus reducing the stopping distance.

It is triggered according to the speedof activation of the brake pedal. Theeffect of this is a reduction in theresistance of the pedal and anincrease in braking efficiency.

ABS ANTI-LOCK BRAKINGSYSTEM

The ABS with Electronic Brake ForceDistribution (EBFD) increases the sta-bility and manoeuvrability of yourvehicle, particularly on poor or slip-pery road surfaces.

Note: when changing wheels (tyresand rims), make sure that these areapproved.

The anti-lock braking system comesinto operation automatically whenthere is a risk of wheel lock.

Illumination of this warninglight, accompanied by anaudible signal and the mes-sage "Braking fault" on themulti-function display, indi-

cates a malfunction of the electronicbrake force distribution, which cancause a loss of control of the vehiclewhen braking.

Stop immediately.

Contact a PEUGEOT dealer.

Normal operation of the ABS maymake itself felt by slight vibrationsof the brake pedal.

In emergency braking, pressvery firmly without releasingthe pressure.

These are triggered again :☞ automatically if the ignition is

switched off,☞ manually by pressing the switch

again.

DYNAMIC STABILITYCONTROL (ESP) AND TRACTION CONTROL (ASR)

These systems are linked and com-plementary to the ABS system.

In the event of a significant variationbetween the trajectory of the vehicleand the path required by the driver, the ESP system acts automaticallyon the engine and on the brake ofone or more wheels, to put the vehi-cle back on course.

The traction control (ASR) systemoptimises drive, in order to avoid thewheels slipping, by acting on thebrakes of the drive wheels and onthe engine. It also enables the direc-tional stability of the vehicle to beimproved during acceleration.

Operation of the ESPand ASR systems

When one of the two sys-tems is in operation, thisindicator light flashes.

The ESP system offersexceptional safety in nor-mal driving, but this shouldnot encourage the driver totake extra risks or drive at

high speed.

The correct functioning of this sys-tem depends on observation of themanufacturer's recommendationsregarding wheels (tyres and rims),the braking components and theelectronic components, as well asthe PEUGEOT assembly andoperation procedures.

After an impact, have the systemchecked by a PEUGEOT dealer

TOWING YOUR VEHICLE

Without lifting (4 wheels on the road)

You should always use a tow bar.

The towing eye is inside the spare wheel.

From the front:

☞ Unclip the bottom of the cover, using the flat part of the towing eye,

☞ Screw in the towing eye until it locks.

From the rear:

☞ Unclip the top of the cover using the flat part of the towing eye,

☞ Screw in the towing eye until it locks.

Lifting (2 wheels only on the road)

It is preferable to raise the vehicle by the wheels.

Never use the radiator crossmember.

Special features of the automatic gearbox

When towing with four wheels on theground, the following rules must beobeyed:– lever in position N,– tow the vehicle at less than 30 mph

(50 km/h) over a maximum distance of 30 miles (50 km).

– do not add oil to the gearbox.

When towing with theengine switched off, there is no brakingassistance

Page 43: Peugeot 607 Owners Manual 2002

TOWING A TRAILER, CARAVAN, BOAT ETC...

Only use original PEUGEOT towbars which have been tested andapproved from the design stage ofyour vehicle.

The tow bar must be fitted by aPEUGEOT dealer.

Driving advice

Distribution of loads: distribute theload in the trailer so that the heaviestloads are as close as possible to theaxle and the nose weight is close tothe maximum authorised without, however, exceeding it.

Cooling: towing a trailer on a slopeincreases the coolant temperature.

As the fan is electronically controlled, its cooling capacity is not dependenton the engine speed.

On the contrary, use a high gear tolower the engine speed, and reduceyour speed.

In all cases, pay attention to thecoolant temperature.Note: in certain cases of particularlyarduous use (towing the maximumload up a steep slope in high tem-peratures), the engine automaticallylimits its power. In this case, cuttingoff the air conditioning allows theengine power to be recovered, andtherefore the towing speed to be sig-nificantly increased (approximately12mph [20 km/h] more). If the coolant temperature warninglight comes on, stop the vehicle andswitch off the engine as soon aspossible.

Tyres: check the tyre pressures ofthe towing vehicle and of the trailer, observing the recommended pres-sure.

Brakes: towing increases the brak-ing distance. Drive at a moderatespeed, change down early and brakegradually.

Side wind: sensitivity to side wind isincreased. Drive smoothly and at amoderate speed.

Lighting

Manual adjustment

Adjust your headlamps so as not todazzle other road users (see sectionon ''Manual adjustment of head-lamps''). Check the electrical sig-nalling of the trailer.

Automatic beam correction

For vehicles with Xenon bulbs, thissystem automatically corrects theheight of the beam, whatever theload of the vehicle. The driver is thenassured of having optimum lightingand not causing a nuisance to otherroad users.

In cases of malfunction, the driver isalerted by means of the warning lighton the instrument panel.

In this situation the system adjustsyour headlamps to the low position.

PEUGEOT SERVICING

The maintenance cycle of your 607 is based on level A (including the replacement of the engine oil, the oil filter and a set of checks) and level C services [service level A + workshop operations carried out every 40,000 miles (60 000 km)] inaccordance with the tables on the following pages.

So that the driving conditions and your style of driving may be taken into account, your 607 is fitted with a service indica-tor which programmes the intervals for the level A service:

• every 20,000 miles (30 000 km) maximum or 2 years for petrol engines,

• every 12,000 miles (20 000 km) maximum or 2 years for direct injection diesel engines.

The frequency of level A services specific to your vehicle will be determined by three elements:

• the number of engine revolutions,

• the engine oil temperature,

• prolonged periods of the vehicle not being used.

Depending on these elements, the service indicator will suggest a time which is more or less the same as the initial plan.Depending on the conditions of use, one or more level A services can be carried out between two level C services.

Depending on the mileage recorded, your dealer may offer to carry out the level C service to avoid the visits being too closetogether.

PEUGEOT SERVICING18

Page 50: Peugeot 607 Owners Manual 2002

15-07-2002

The extension of the service intervals means that the engine oil level must be checked regularly: topping up of theoil between two oil changes is normal.

It is for this reason, and for your complete peace of mind, that your Peugeot dealer will carry out a levels check andtop-up midway between routine services, at the time or distance intervals specified.

This will be undertaken free of charge, provided that the maintenance of your vehicle has been carried out withinthe PEUGEOT network.

At the same time, your Peugeot dealer will offer you a Peugeot safety check, for a nominal fee.

A Peugeot professional will carry out a quick check, and will top up the levels if necessary (oil up to 1 litre, coolantand screen wash).

The date of the intermediate visit is not shown by the service indicator. It is to be carried out between two services.

If the oil level is too low, there is a risk of significant damage to the engine: check the engine oil level at least every3,000 miles (5 000 km).

This maintenance frequency is the result of developments to our vehicles and to the lubricants:

THUS IT IS ESSENTIAL THAT YOU ONLY USE ENGINE LUBRICANTS THAT ARE APPROVED AND RECOMMENDEDBY THE MANUFACTURER (see pages on 'Lubricants').

The oils which appear in the tableopposite are suitable for most pur-poses.

The diagram opposite states theoptimum range of viscosity depend-ing on the temperatures at which theoils are to be used.

It is also possible to use syntheticoils of 'superior quality'.

In the absence of semi-synthetic orsynthetic oils, oils of API SH/SJ qual-ity (for petrol engines) or CD/CFquality (for diesel engines) can beused by following the 'Arduous con-ditions' servicing schedule, whichspecifies shorter intervals.

Do not hesitate to ask for advicefrom a PEUGEOT dealer to maintaindriving pleasure and to minimise themaintenance cost of your vehicle.

CHILD SEATSAlthough one of PEUGEOT's main concerns when designing your vehicle, the safety of your children also depends on you.For maximum safety, please follow these precautions:– All children under the age of 10* must travel in a special approved child seat*, adapted to their weight, in a seat fitted with

a seat belt.– Front passenger seat*: children under the age of 10 must not travel in the forwards facing position**.The rearwards facing position is permitted. In this position it is compulsory to disarm the passenger air bag. After carrying out numerous tests, PEUGEOT recommends the following systems:

Up to 18 months (up to 13 kg)

"Britax Babysure": installed with its back to the engine in the front or in the rear using a three-point seat belt.In the front, the passenger seat must be in the 'mid-way' position on the slide.

From 9 months to 3 or 4 years (9 to 18 kg)

"Römer Prince": installed in the rear using a three-point seat belt. For the safety of your child, the seat and the restraining cushion must never be separated.
