In 2015 the board and staff team decided that Paws forKids as a working title was no longer viable. A victim of its own success, the name is inherently focused on the one service hence the decision to establish an all-embracing title for all four services was agreed.

After lengthy meetings and an away-day brainstormingsession, the word ‘Endeavour’ was eventually chosen

as a new working title that could take us forwardindefinitely. ‘Endeavour’ means to try hard to

achieve; “Earnest and conscientious activityintended to do or accomplish something”, and we all felt this reflected both the ethos

of the charity and the work ethic of theteam. We also like the way we can usekey letters of the word to graphically reinforce our mission statement to “End domestic abuse”.

Paws for Kids remains the registeredname with the Charities Commissionand nothing else about us has changedapart from the service logos which havebeen adapted to create an ‘Endeavourfamily’. We all look upon this as a verypositive evolutionary step and we hopeyou share our enthusiasm.

Endeavour also reflects ourhopes and aims for 2016

We will Endeavour to ensure thatour services are accessible andavailable to assist all sectors ofBolton communities irrespective of ethnicity, gender or sexuality.

We will Endeavour to end domesticabuse for people and their pets.

Back in 1997, when a small group of women met in my dining room todiscuss the possibility of creating a new type of service to help victims of domestic abuse, we had no ideathat Paws for Kids would evolve intothe organisation it is today.

Originally, our plan was to providetemporary fostering of pets belongingto families who were accessing refugeaccommodation where pets were notallowed. Alongside this the idea was to provide bespoke home-based support for women and children when leavingrefuge - helping to reduce the length of time children would be witness to, or subjected to domestic abuse - and that’s how we came up with the name,Paws (pause) for Kids.

As you may know, during our 18-year lifespan we have now successfully established four core services: Pets Service Safe Haven Outreach Project Independent Domestic Violence Advocacy

We were delighted that the Mayor of Bolton, CaroleSwarbrick was able to open the event, officiallylaunching our new working title. We presented herwith a Pets Service certificate sponsoring a dog onher behalf as a token of appreciation for her kindsupport.

We had a theatrical production of ‘Black Eyes andCottage Pies’ by the Mad Theatre Company whichhighlighted domestic abuse in teenage relationships.Cath Dunn-Cham from Broken Rainbow gave us a presentation to highlight the difficulties faced by people in same sex (LGBT) relationships in accessingappropriate domestic abuse support.

Everyone who attended the event was offered a cup cake topped with one of our new service logos (edible) made by the very talented mother of one of our Trustees.

We were privileged to be able to close the event with a performance by two women who have comethrough our services, Arrayah and Eleanor. Arrayahperformed a song she has written; ‘She Flies’ withEleanor accompanying her on the flute. You will beable to purchase a copy of this song later in the yearto raise funds for Endeavour projects - informationon how to do this will be included in the Springnewsletter.

As reported in our Autumnnewsletter, we held the AGMtogether with the review of ourwork as part of Bolton’s launchof the annual ‘16-Days of Action to End Domestic Abuse’ campaign. This recognises thestruggle victims face in leavingan abusive relationship and aims to raise general awarenessthat help is available.

The giveaway initiative helped mark their twenty fifthyear celebrations of delivering services in Bolton. The tablets - similar in specification to an iPad withtouch screen function - were presented to successfulgroups to coincide with the national initiative GetOnline Week.

The presentation took place at The Bolton Hub andwas led by John Ryan, Head of Customer Service atBolton Council, who supported the scheme as part ofhis role to encourage residents and community groups of Bolton to get online and build confidenceusing their digital skills.

Endeavour Young Persons Service were delighted whenthey were awarded one of 25tablets by Bolton Council forVoluntary Services.

The Young Persons Advisor will use the tablet in one-to-one sessions for interactive work and to view videoclips as part of the individual’s support plans, whilstalso giving young people information on volunteering, training and job opportunities.

On yet another practical level, the tablet will also beused by support workers to help clients who have notgot IT equipment in their accommodation to enablethem to bid on properties when looking for a Boltonat Home property.

In November, three members ofEndeavour were given an opportunityby MEP Julie Ward to visit theEuropean Parliament as part of aseries of activities that Socialist andDemocratic MEPs organised via theWomen’s Rights Committee.

Julie is a Labour and Co-operative PartyMember of the European Parliament for theNorth West, covering Cumbria, Lancashire,Merseyside, Cheshire and Greater Manchester. As such she is a member of the EuropeanParliamentary Labour Party. Julie serves on theParliament's Committee on Gender Equality andWomen's Rights. She is also a member of theLabour Party's Policy Commission on Educationand Children.

We were invited because of our interest in the ongoing campaign to eradicate violenceagainst women in our community and aroundthe world. As an MEP, Julie is able to host visitors at the parliament. The parliament isable to make a contribution towards travel, accommodation and meals for those who areentered into the sponsorship scheme. Thesponsored trip gave myself, Linda (our YPDVA)and Maura the chair of our Trustees the opportunity to attend and participate in anumber of meetings and discussions on a variety of important issues around violenceagainst women and girls including trafficking. The EU is crucial to the progression of equalityand in the fight against VAWG, we were also

able to see where and how MEPs work and met progressive feminist MEPs (male, female and LGBTI).

This event was part of a wider program ofactivities in November exploring ViolenceAgainst Women & Girls. Julie is well known for her alternative approach, livening up theprogram by inviting the Women’s VoicesProject to come over from the UK to sharetheir latest production which explores gender-based violence. I am sure this was the firsttime women, babies and their knitting hadbeen part of a European Parliament debate.

Throughout the year Paws for Kids is supported by In Kind Direct whoredistribute products from companiesto charities. Sometimes companiesfind they are over-stocked or discoversamples or cosmetically damaged(but usable) goods, or end-of-lineitems sitting on shelves, taking upvaluable warehouse space.

In Kind Direct provide a valuable service bygifting products that may have lost a lot oftheir value in the commercial world, butremain highly valued by their recipients andthey mean everything to a small charity likePaws for Kids, especially for children andyoung people in our Endeavour Safe HavenProject. Donations from In Kind Direct allowsus to spend more on delivering our services.

Sometimes In Kind Direct go that extra mile, a good example of this being the 2015 Disney‘Feel the Magic’ Campaign. In Kind Directworking in partnership with Disney stores provided 96 ‘Tigger’ soft toys to Paws for Kidscompletely free of charge for children beingsupported by the Endeavour projects.

Disney’s ‘Feel the Magic Campaign’ aims todonate thousands more soft toys to children’scharities across the UK. As you can see fromthe photo, to the children we work with, these toys are priceless. In Kind Direct inspires product giving for social

good by re-distributing usable products donatedby some of the UK’s best known manufacturersand retailers to charities working in the UK andabroad. For more information visit the In KindDirect website: www.inkinddirect.org
