• Leather is extremely strong, it takes more than 180 kg/Lbs of pressure to

puncture leather-covered furniture.

• Leather resistance to tearing is legendary. That is why breastplates, belts

and shoe laces are made of leather.

• By nature it is not flammable. Leather is the only material that can be

used in the aircraft industry without the addition of further flame-resistant

products.

• If treated correctly, leather lasts for an incredibly long time. Most experts

give leather an average life four times longer than that of textile products.

And ageing gives added dignity.

• Leather does not cause allergies. All dust particles can be eliminated from

leather, so it is perfect for people who are allergic to dust.

• You can sit on leather without feeling hot or cold. Leather remains at room

temperature until it comes in contact with your body, then adjusts to your

body temperature.

• There are countless possible colour variations, effects, structures and

reliefs. Leather is so versatile that it can be used in fashion, for furniture,

for car upholstery, for shoes and bags, etc.

• Leather is a prestigious article. Leather is offered for articles such as

furniture or car upholstery. The leather version is outstanding for its quality.

Leather is one of the oldest materials known to man.

Here are a few reasons why leather has

always been so popular.

LLEEAATTHHEERR TTYYPPEESS

In order to use Leather Master products correctly and to obtain the maximum

cleaning and protection results, it is essential to be able to recognise the various

types of leather (aniline, protected, nubuck), thus avoiding the use of products

where not suited.

Leather Master works in collaboration with many upholstery manufacturers in

classifying their leathers into the following three basic categories:

• ANILINE - cleaning code A

• PROTECTED - cleaning code P

• NUBUCK - cleaning code N

ANILINE: cleaning code Aalso called Natural, Pure, Naked or Unprotected.

These Leathers are colored with transparent dye stuff. This means that you are able to see the actual surface grain and markings.

It’s as if you are looking through a colored lens. These Leathers have very little or no protective treatments applied to them.

The most common thing to do is to spray a wax finish on the surface that gives short term water repellance. The actual way that the

Leather is made varies from tannery to tannery.

Generally this is how aniline leathers are made

1. The Leather is tanned, then dyed to a ‘crust’ color.

2. Often, the surface is sprayed with additional Aniline

dyestuff in an attempt to even out the coloring.

3. It is possible that additional treatments are done to create

looks like sauvage, pull-up, wax crackle, and shrunken

grain.

4. As a final step, sometimes a light protective spray (such as

wax or fluorcarbon) is applied to give the Leather light

resistance from staining.

5. Steps are taken to soften the Leather either by massaging

machines and/or by tumbling.

Ways to identify aniline

For care and maintenance purposes we need to know if the

surface has been brushed (has a texture like velvet) or not.

This is the point at which people have difficulty distinguishing

Nubuck from Aniline. There are several ways you can identify

an Aniline Leather:

1. Lightly scratch the surface to see if it leaves a lighter color

scratch mark. If it scratches to a lighter color, it is Aniline.

This is not the only test to do because some Nubucks will

do this also.

2. Wet your finger and lightly rub it into the Leather to see

if it turns a darker shade. It should darken lightly, but dry

invisibly.

These are the best tests that you can do in the field. With

time you will be able to identify Aniline Leather visually and

by feel.

PROTECTED: cleaning code Palso called Finished, Semi-Aniline, Everyday, Pigmented or Painted.

These Leathers have combined the best aspects of a natural product (Leather) and have utilized tannery technology to create a

product that is more uniform in appearance and colour (due to the application of pigments to the surface). It then has a finish applied

to the surface that makes the Leather more resistant to the effects of heavy use. The pigments and finish applied to the Leather do

affect the soft hand somewhat. The more finish that is applied the less soft is the Leather.

Generally this is how protected leathers are made

1. The Leather is tanned, then dyed to a crust color.

2. Depending upon the selection of the hides, the Leather is either partially or heavily machined and buffed to even out and hide the

natural markings.

3. Pigment is applied to the Leather either by spraying or roller coating method.

4. Depending upon the article, partial or full embossing of grain may be done to the surface.

5. Finish is applied to the Leather to provide rub resistance and to seal the pigment.

6. Steps are taken to soften the Leather either by massaging machines and/or by tumbling machines.

Ways to Identify Protected

1. Lightly scratch the surface to see if it leaves a lighter

color scratch mark. If it does not scratch to a lighter color

(this means the color remains the same), then this is a

Protected Leather.

2. Use Soft Cleaner and clean the Leather. The cleaner

should stay on top of the finish and should not darken

the Leather.

3. The surface should have some sheen level to it. It is like

looking at wood that has a lacquer finish compared to a

wipe-on oil treatment.

What determines the amount of pigment and finish needed is:

1. The color of the Leather (all light colors require more

pigment to cover the surface).

2. The selection of the Leather (lower grade selection requires more

mechanical correction).

3. The desired level of resistance the finish needs (automotive

requires the highest)

Protected Leathers are the most common Leathers, and for most

consumers the most practical.

NUBUCK: cleaning code Nalso called Distressed, Bomber or Brushed.

This leather starts out as an Aniline leathers which the surface has been brushed or sanded, and have created a texture

similar to a velvet on Leather. Many people confuse these with Suede Leather. Suede is the flesh side of a piece of Leather,

and Nubuck is an effect that is done to the grain side, making it incredibly soft.

Creating a nap on the leather makes it even more absorbent than Aniline Leathers.

Generally this is how Nubuck Leathers are made

1. The Leather is tanned and dyed to a crust color.

2. Then the surface is brushed with fine brushes or sands that cut the Leather and create a nap or velvet texture.

3. Sometimes, additional Aniline dye stuff is applied to the surface to even out or enrich the color.

4. Depending upon the article, stamping of a grain or print effect may be done.

5. Fixation agents are sprayed on the surface to seal the color and prevent transfer, or a fluorcarbon treatment is applied to

protect the leather.

6. The Leather is tumbled to bring out the Nubuck effect and maximize softness.

Ways to identify nubuck

1. The surface should have a texture similar to velvet.

Move your hand across the surface of the leather to

see if shading are traces similar to the effect when you

vacuum a carpet in one direction and then in another,

if so, it is Nubuck.

2. Wet your finger and rub it lightly on the surface.

The surface will darken and also will dry to a slightly

darker shade.

3. For waxed surfaces, rub an area of the Leather with a

sponge several times. This will remove the wax and let

you see if the Leather meets 1 or 2 above.

Nubuck Leathers can reflect the natural Leather grain or

have an endless variety of embossed patterns applied to

them, and color vividly. This is why this type of Leather is

also very popular for the fashion industry.

Only your customer decides how long his leather will last.

Cleaning and protection, these are the regular needs required for leather. Most people feel they

need to nourish their leather. Unfortunately you cannot nourish most leather types.

Cleaning - eliminating dirt and removing stains for a leather sofa that is always clean and that

maintains its attractive appearance.

Protection - to guarantee the original quality of the leather and to maintain a sofa that looks new

even after years of use.

Leather Master System is based on 2 products: Leather Soft Cleaner and Leather Protection

Cream. The combined use of the two products guarantees the perfect cleaning of your sofas as

required, plus essential leather protection.

LEATHER SOFT CLEANERLeather type for A - P

Leather Soft Cleaner is a waterbased cleaner that can be used on Leather types A and P. This is a mild cleaner that will not affect the

original properties or finish of the leather.

Leather Soft Cleaner will clean soiled as well as waterbased stains. Most cleaners contain solvents like alcohol or mineral spirits.

These types of cleaners will definitely clean, but also will attack either the finish or dry the Leather out.

Leather Soft Cleaner is solvent free and works without removing finish or harming the Leather. The only time that Leather Soft Cleaner

could remove color or change the Leather is under the following circumstances:

1. If the Leather is not colorfast to any type of liquid. You can test this by wetting a soft, white cloth with

distilled or purified water and wiping the Leather. If color comes off on the cloth with the use of purified water,

Leather Soft Cleaner or anything else will also remove color.

2. If the Leather Soft Cleaner appears to have darkened the Leather, it is extremely absorbent. The Leather has

shrunk. The Leather has not gotten darker, but each dot of color has gotten closer together, thus giving the

appearance of becoming dark. All you need to do is to stretch the Leather by pulling it in all directions.

You will see the color lighten.

LEATHER PROTECTION CREAMLeather type for A - P

Also available: Leather Protection Cream Gloss and Leather Protection Cream Matt.

Leather Protection Cream is a water based protector for all

Leather types except Nubuck. This is truly an incredible product

because it provides excellent protection against oil-water-alcohol

based stains as well as help to resist the effects of daily soiling.

The Leather Protection Cream places an invisible, breathable

barrier between you and your Leather. Our system is for you to

protect your Leather first, then follow a routine of cleaning and

reprotection.

This way you are not actually cleaning the Leather’s original

surface, but cleaning from the surface of the protection.

Since some Leathers are very porous, the Leather Protection

Cream prevents stains from absorbing deeply into the Leather

and becoming nearly impossible to remove.

Usually, Protected Leathers that have cracked or peeled is not

from use, but from body oils and perspiration that have settled

down into the grain of the Leather and started to dissolve the

finish over time. The Leather Protection Cream will assist in

preventing the cracking & peeling when proper cleaning is also done.

Simply apply the Leather Protection Cream to a soft cloth and

wipe it on evenly, paying particular attention to high use areas

like seats, arms, front railings, and backs.

For Aniline Leathers, it is best to apply the Leather Protection

Cream twice to all the high use areas. We recommend fully

cleaning and reprotecting your furniture 2-4 times per year.

When leather is placed in high use rooms (TV area), it may be

required to clean and reprotect more often.

Pieces like recliners are subject to very heavy use. With leather,

it is much easier to practice prevention than it is to try to resolve

major challenges after the fact.

Leather Protection Cream will also work to remove small surface

scratches on Aniline Leathers. In general, the Leather Protection

Cream is used as a final step in combination with most of the

Leather Master repair or touch-up products.

This product is used in the same manner as Leather SoftCleaner, but its action is more intensive thanks to the greaterconcentration of active substances. The difference in this product is that it has twice the active cleaning ingredients.Strong Cleaner can be used on all Leathers types. It is veryimportant that you use the product in combination with a sponge to foam the product, and a cloth to wipe away theexcess dirt. This product does not remove the finish from anyLeather that has the proper rub resistance standards.

SUPER CLEANER - Leather type for P onlySize: 50 ml

This product removes blue jeans transfer, newspaper print anddeep stains like mustard from Protected Leathers. This productworks when nothing else will clean the Leather. Often on lightcolor Leathers, it appears that the color is coming off theLeather. What actually has happened is a transfer of color to theLeather’s surface from blue jeans and/or newspaper print. You can water this product down with distilled water to create aless agressive product.

This is a term for natural fats that spew from the inside of theLeather to the surface. It can make the Leather look like it has amilky film or a haze on it. This kit is used for repairing light to medium cracking and fading for Pigmented leathers. Strong Cleaner is a mild, water based cleaner that can be used on a most aniline and pigmented leathers. It will clean soil as well asmost water based stains. Colour Line Pigmented is a water based product containing pigments dispersed in water. They fix them selfcontaining an fixations agent. These have the advantage of being able to be applied by hand or by spraying. Therefore Colour LinePigmented is very easy to use and suitable for repair technicians as well as for consumers. Available are 13 standard base colours andin addition 60 pre-mixed.

COLOUR LINE ANILINE - Leather type for A only

This kit is designed to restore colour to Aniline leathers. It is also great for shading unmatched panels on Aniline leathers. Lighter panels can be shaded to match darker panels. Leather Soft Cleaner is a waterbased cleaner that can be used on all Leather types. This is a mild cleaner that will not affect the Leather’s original properties or finish. Leather Soft Cleaner will clean most soiling as well as waterbased stains. Most cleaners contain solvents like alcohol or mineral spirits. These types of cleaners will definitely clean, but also will attack either the finish or dry the Leather out. Leather Soft Cleaner is solvent free and works without removing finish or harming the Leather.Colour Line Aniline is a transparent Aniline dye stuff. That means it is similar to putting colored lenses on the leather. It will not cover up damage like pigment will. It will only colour the area, and you will able to see the surface.
