2017 Pineville vs. Jackson County

Pineville has won 26 times, their bowl op-

ponent has won 26 times. There was one tie.

The Mountain Lions are 2-0 against Jackson

County in Laurel Bowl matchups.

Pineville-Jackson Co. to meet

in the 54th Laurel Bowl

Page 5: Photos, Rosters and Schedules of Bell County, Middlesboro ... · Football 50 years ago, the game that never happened Pinnacle Sports View is published by John & Brenda Engle, PO Box

Fifty seasons ago the Pineville

Mountain Lions had one of the best football

seasons in the storied history of their pro-

gram. They went undefeated, but they didn’t

even get invited to the playoffs.

Coach Bill Adams had a starting

lineup at the beginning of the season of of-

fensive linemen/ends Mike Downey, John

Lefevers, Lyle Bailey, Danny Jones, Tim

Stephens, Poppy Harrison and David Baker

blocking for quarterback David Asher, half-

backs Darrell Johnson and Russell Brooks

along with fullback Bruce Hendrickson.

Pineville opened the 1967 season

with a 25-12 win at Harlan as Asher and

Downey combined on a pair of touchdown

passes. Downey also blocked a punt and re-

turned it for a touchdown.

The Mountain Lions would go on

to complete a perfect 11-0 season that in-

cluded wins over county foes Middlesboro

and twice over Bell County, once in the reg-

ular season and once in the Laurel Bowl later

in the year. Despite finishing 11-0, Pineville

was not the district winner. That honor went

to Lynch (9-0-0) by virtue of the Alabama

tiebreaking system used by the KHSAA to

break ties that occured in the Dickinson Rat-

ing System. Based on the strength of their

opponents, Lynch earned 4 1/2 points to

Pineville’s 4, giving the Bulldogs the district

title despite claims that Lynch did not contact

a few district teams to attempt to schedule

them. Lynch and Pineville did not meet in

football in 1967 theoretically denying fans

the opportunity to see two of the best Class

A teams in Kentucky decide the district

crown by actually playing each other.

Lynch would later lose 24-0 at

McKell in the opening round of the state

playoffs.

Pineville was the SEKC champion

with an 8-0 record. At the SEKC banquet,

Pineville’s Mike Downey was named Line-

man of the Year and David Asher was chosen

Back of the Year.

In an unrelated but interesting side

story, Evarts, who won the 1967 AA district

title when they defeated Middlesboro, was

hosting a playoff game against Belfry and

leading 14-13 in the first half when a fire

broke out near the stadium and plunged the

field into darkness. After approximately a

two hour delay, the teams drove to Harlan

and completed the game on Harlan’s field

where Belfry used a fourth quarter rally to

win 26-21.

I have to admit I

can't stand going too long

without checking my trial

cameras. This is true espe-

cially this time of year.

Even though the experts

tell me to leave them alone

until hunting season, I

know I'm probably not

even going to hunt some

of these spots until the No-

vember rut anyway. So, I

check away. I figure any

buck that has gotten

spooked by my presence

now, will undoubtedly be dumbstruck early

in the rut by a hot doe, forgetting all traces

of human activity that I left in August. So,

I'll wait a few weeks and make my way back

to the camera to see if there are any surprises

that might cause me to set up a stand early.

This is especially helpful for me on my Ken-

tucky property since only one buck is al-

lowed for the whole year. I have two good

eight pointers showing up right now but I'm

not about to waste my only tag on one of

these. They need one and maybe even two

more years before they become a Kentucky

trophy. For now, I will keep waiting and

watching to see if a bigger deer shows up

consistently or to see if I'll just need to take

my chances that a stray happens to make a

visit during November or December.

There have been several years when

the tag I bought in September was still in my

pocket in January – when the season ended.

For some it was considered wasted. For me,

it was not. That tag didn't represent a deer

but an opportunity for a deer. That's all a

hunting license is. It's an opportunity to hunt

within certain parameters.

If I stay within those

guidelines, I can harvest

anything I want. But there

are also other parameters

that are self-imposed. We

each have them. They in-

volve anything from the

size of deer to the time of

year. For instance, I won't

shoot a doe if it has a fawn

with it, or I'm not going to

shoot a doe if it's too late

in the afternoon. I'm just

not interested in being out

at 10:00 processing deer. I prefer to home

and even in bed by then.

I find this a great picture of the Chris-

tian life and how we are meant to interact

with each other. There are some things that

are parameters for everyone and then there

are some self-imposed convictions that oth-

ers may not hold. These self-imposed ones

are the grey areas that we sometimes dis-

agree. Paul, the writer of most of the New

Testament, dealt with how we are to live

with fellow Christians who may not see

things the same way we do. His overall ad-

monition is to make every effort to live in

harmony with each other. (Romans 14) And

there is no doubt these words still ring true.

In a world where there is so much disunity,

Christians must strive to be the answer to

Jesus' last prayer. "May they experience such

perfect unity that the world will know that

you sent me and that you love them as much

as you love me." (John 17:23 NLT)

OFFENSIVE PREVIEW

• Twenty letter winners return on offense from the 2016 season, including eight primary

starters.

• Kentucky went through a remarkable transformation a year ago under new offensive co-

ordinator Eddie Gran. Leaning more toward the passing game at the beginning of the season,

an injury to the starting quarterback and the emergence of an outstanding freshman running

back led Gran to remodel the attack.

• The result was 3,044 rushing yards, second-most in school history; 5.4 yards per carry,

shattering the school record by a wide margin; and a pair of 1,000-yard rushers, first time in

school history that had been accomplished in one season. And, the recordbreaking ground

game set up an entertaining bigplay passing offense that featured 14 completions of 40 or

more yards, 10 of which went for touchdowns.

Kentucky scored at least 35 points seven times in 2016, the most since the 2007 season

(nine).

• With two veteran quarterbacks, a 1,000-yard rusher, two career 1,000-yard receivers and

four starters returning in the line, the UK offense should have balanced firepower again in

the coming season.

DEFENSIVE PREVIEW

• For the first time in the Mark Stoops era there is a new defensive coordinator taking the

reins of the defense.

Matt House, who spent the 2016 season as the special teams coordinator and inside line-

backers coach, was named D.J. Eliot’s successor in January after Eliot left for the same po-

sition at Colorado.

• House welcomes back 21 returning letter winners, including nine starters.

• UK started 13 different players on defense last season and seven (DE Denzil Ware, DE

Courtney Miggins, WLB Jordan Jones, SS Mike Edwards, CB Derrick Baity and CB Chris

Westry) started in all 13 games.

• Of a possible 143 total starts (13 games, 11 starters), 116 total starts return on defense in

2017.

• UK opponents averaged 44.5 points in the first three games, but in the last nine regular

season games, which included top-ranked Alabama, UK’s defense held the opponent to 27.0

ppg.

• The only position where a starter from 2016 does not return is at strong side defensive end

and nickel back.

UK will look to replace graduating seniors Courtney Miggins (28 tackles, 4.0 TFL), Marcus

McWilson (69 tackles, 1 INT) and Blake McClain (62 tackles, 3 INT).

SCHEDULE NOTES

• The 2017 Kentucky football schedule will feature seven home games and five road tilts.

• Kentucky will once again face a challenging schedule as it includes home conference games

with Florida, Missouri, Tennessee and Ole Miss. UK will travel to South Carolina, Missis-

sippi State, Vanderbilt and Georgia in league play.

• UK will open its schedule with on the road vs. Southern Miss on Sept. 2. It will mark UK’s

first trip to Hattiesburg, Miss.

• The Wildcats’ home opener is Sept. 9 vs. intrastate foe Eastern Kentucky for Heroes’ Day.

• UK opens the SEC slate on the road at South Carolina on Sept. 16.

• Mixed in the conference schedule is first-time opponent Eastern Michigan at home on Sept.

30. That day, UK Athletics will host high school bands from across the state of Kentucky as

part of Band Day.

• After Eastern Michigan, the Wildcats will face seven-straight SEC foes, hosting Missouri

(Oct. 7) for Homecoming, along with the annual Ag Roundup and Family Weekend cele-

brations. The Cats will travel to Starkville, Miss., to face the Bulldogs on Oct. 21 and return

home on Oct. 28 vs. Tennessee to recognize former head coach Rich Brooks and his three

bowl championship teams (2006, 2007 and 2008).

• When the Wildcats play host to Ole Miss on Nov. 4, UK Athletics will pay special tribute

to veterans with its first annual Salute to Veterans. Additionally, it will be Youth Football

Day at Kroger Field.

• Back-to-back road games at Vanderbilt (Nov. 11) and Georgia (Nov. 18) will conclude reg-

ular-season SEC play before Louisville visits Kroger Field on Nov. 25 for Senior Day.

• The 2017 season will culminate with the first SEC Championship Game to be played in

the new Mercedes Benz Stadium in Atlanta on Saturday, Dec. 2. It will be the 26th edition

of the game and the 24th in the city of Atlanta.
