To keep a division into subject sections, a six (2+2+2) digit article identifier replaces the familiar page number (see below). For example, in the January 2010 issue (01), the (fictitious) ninth article (09) in the Nuclear Astrophysics section (section-heading number 58) would be cited as Phys. Rev. C 81, 015809 (2010). This scheme permits one to append the latest article on a given subject to the end of the appropriate subject heading. The article numbers increase monotonically in the monthly Table of Contents.
