DSWD 4A, CBAP partners in the conduct of family

development sessions for Pantawid beneficiaries

TRECE MARTIRES CITY, Cavite, May 16 (PIA) -- The Department of Social Welfare andDevelopment (DSWD) Regional Office IV-A recently inked partnership with CommunityBuilders, Advancers & Partners (CBAP)-Cavite Ministries, Inc. in the conduct of familydevelopment sessions (FDS) for Pantawid beneficiaries in the province.

Under the memorandum of agreement (MOA), the CBAP-Cavite will collaborate with theDSWD in its Bantay, Tulay, Kaagapay, Gabay framework.

The CBAP-Cavite will focus on being a Gabay (guide), which means extending technicalassistance to the Department for implementation of its various programs. The facilitation of the FDS for Pantawid Pamilya beneficiaries falls on their responsibilities as a Gabay.

DSWD 4A Regional Director Leticia T. Diokno, in her message during the MOA signing, said

she is grateful that there are civil society organizations (CSOs) like CBAP-Cavite that arewilling to help in the implementation of Pantawid Pamilya especially in the conduct of FDS.

The FDS is one of the tools of the program in instilling behavioral changes in ourbeneficiaries so we can lead them towards self-sufficiency, she added.

Rev. Daniel D. Feliciano, chairman of CBAP-Cavite, is thankful for the opportunity andsupport the Department provides so they can help with the values formation of beneficiariesof Pantawid Pamilya.

"Being a Bantay, Tulay, Kaagapay and Gabay coincides with our mandate of transformingnations and generations. We hope for a smooth relationship between our group and theDSWD," he said.

CBAP-Cavite Ministries, Inc. is a faith-based CSO based in Dasmarias City. DOST names scholars for 2013

LOS BANOS, Laguna, May 16 (PIA) --The Department of Science and Technology (DOST)through the Science Education Institute (SEI) has released the names of the scholarshipqualifiers for 2013.

The new scholarship awardees must seek admission in any of the priority science andtechnology (S&T) fields of study at any state college, university or CHED-identified centersof excellence/centers of development.

Each qualifier shall receive a notice of award from the DOST-SEI or DOST regional officestating the date of orientation and contract signing.

President Aquino declares the 3rd Monday of June of every year as National Tour Guides Day

President Benigno S. Aquino III has declared the third Monday of June of every year as National Tour Guides' Dayin recognition of the contribution of the tourist guides' sector in the development, promotion and sustainability of tourism in the Philippines.

The Chief Executive issued the declaration by virtue of Proclamation No. 574 signed by Executive SecretaryPaquito N. Ochoa Jr. on May 7.

"Tourism is an indispensable element of the national economy and an industry of national interest and importance,which must be harnessed as an engine of socio-economic growth and cultural affirmation," President Aquino said.

The President noted that Republic Act. No. 9593 or the Tourism Act of 2009, promotes a tourism industry that isecologically sustainable, responsible and participative.

"Tour guides play a very significant role in tourism, as they promote, market and advocate the Philippines as atourism destination, creating a favorable image of the country and contributing to an enriching Philippineexperience for local and foreign visitors," he said.

"The National Tour Guides Day provides an opportunity for professional tour guides to convene and conductactivities that will promote and advance their profession, and that will also draw the attention of authorities, thepublic and the media to the quality and the value of their work," he stressed. Malacanang hopeful Comelec can address slow count Malacanang expressed hope on Thursday the Commission on Elections (Comelec) would be able to addressconcerns regarding the proclamation of winners in the May 2013 midterm elections as soon as possible.

In a press briefing, Presidential Spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said he expects Comelec chairman Sixto Brillantesto proclaim the winners tonight.

We certainly hopethat the concerns can be resolved by the Comelec as soon as possible. And also the lag intransmission came in only after the first 48 hours so we certainly hope that the issues, the transmission lag, wouldbe solved the soonest, Lacierda said.

What we are concerned with certainly is that there will be no issue on the credibility of the elections, he added.

This is just a lag of transmission. The Comelec has already explained the process, has already explained the waysthey will be able to ensure that the votes will be properly counted, Lacierda said. PND (rck)

16 April 2013, Tacloban City - Rannikka Ann S. Mondoedo, a daughter of a seafarer and a student of thePhilippine Science High School Eastern Visayas Campus ranked 6 in the Overseas Workers Welfare

Administration (OWWA) - Education for Development Scholarship Program (EDSP) administered last November 2012.

Aside from her, Earl Antonell P. Doctolero, a brother of an OFW working in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and astudent of the Eastern Visayas State University High School also successfully passed the said qualifyingexamination. Both of these new scholars are from Tacloban City.

Mondoedo will pursue a bachelors degree in Clothing Technology in UP Diliman, while Doctolero chose to takeup Bachelor of Science in Tourism, Hotel and Restaurant Management at the Leyte Normal University. Bothscholars will be signing a Memorandum of Agreement with OWWA later this month.

The OWWA provides qualified EDSP scholars with aPhp 60,000.00 financial assistance per school year for a four or five-year baccalaureate degree course in anycollege or university of his/her choice. The tuition fee of the scholar is directly paid by the OWWA to the collegeor university while the remaining amount is given to the scholar upon submission of grades at the end of eachsemester.

For the School Year 2013 - 2014, OWWA Administrator Carmelita S. Dimzon announced that out of the 4,506qualified dependents of OWWA members who took the exam, 105 examinees were selected. She indicated thatthe program is a way to empower the youth. Also according to OWWA Administrator Dimzon, said After all,education is the leverage between the rich and the poor. These scholars should serve as an inspiration to other OFW children whose ultimate goal is not only to help their parents, but make them proud of their achievements.

Every year, the DOST-SEI simultaneously conducts the EDSP qualifying exam in Manila, Batangas,Pangasinan, Cavite, Davao City, Laguna, NCR, Iligan City, Tagbiliran City, Naga City, Iligan City, NegrosOccidental, Butuan City, Bataan. The same examination is administered in Riyadh and Jeddah, Kindom of Saudi

Arabia, and the State of Bahrain.

Qualified applicants for the EDSP are sons and daughters of active OWWA members. Siblings not older than 21years old of unmarried OWWA members can also apply for the said scholarship.

17 April 2013, Tacloban City All efforts were paid off when Zenaida R. Abrigo, a sister of an OFW working inthe Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and a student from the Naval State University finally graduated Cum Laude. Sheoutstandingly earned a degree in Bachelor of Science in Hotel, Restaurant and Tourism Management with ageneral weighted average of 1.52.

Zenaida R. Abrigo is a beneficiary of the OFW Dependents Scholarship Program (OFW-DSP) wherein an eligibledependent of an active OFW with a basic monthly salary of not more than $400 receives a financial assistance of Php10,000.00 per semester.

OWWA scholar Abrigo is the youngest among eight siblings in her family. They lost their parents years ago. Itwas her brother, Gilbert R. Abrigo, an OWWA member who supported her all throughout her studies.

In her accomplishment report, she narrated her painstaking yet wonderful and rewarding experiences being anOWWA Scholar. She described her experience in school as challenging and adventurous. She was alwaysdetermined to do her best in school.

Zenaida R. Abrigo expressed her sincere and heartfelt gratitude to OWWA for giving her the opportunity to beone of the OWWA Scholars. She indicated that, Im grateful for being an OWWA scholar and for all the help; theopportunity that they (OWWA) have given me and for being part of my inspiration in life. I hope that the OWWA
