Aquino vows continuing support to police, military

resident Benigno S. Aquino III assured the members of the police and the military for continuing support of the government for their needs, particularly

modern equipment and arms to do their jobs more effectively.

In a speech during the

48th foundation anniversary and

alumni homecoming of the

National Defense College of the

Philippines (NDCP) in Makati City

Friday night, he made a

commitment to give law enforcers

and security personnel the

equipment they need from battle

ship to helicopters as well as

sophisticated firearms.

For instance, the

President mentioned the Hamilton

Class Cutter from the US which is

set to arrive in the country within a

week. With the arrival of the new

ship, the government expects to

boost its maritime patrol capability.

There will also be capability

upgrades and modernization of the

equipment of the Philippine

National Police (PNP) and Armed

Forces of the Philippines (AFP)

like the delivery of brand new

choppers, patrol craft, and arms

that the President said symbolizes

the government’s recognition of the

police and the military’s dedication

to service.

“Wala ring kuwenta ang

mga teorya at estratehiyang

itinuturo ng NDCP kung

pumupugak naman ang mga armas,

sasakyan, at ibang gamit ng ating

mga pulis—para bang nagmis-

tulang kawawang cowboy na butas

ang bota ng mga sundalo, at walang

gana ang ating mga kawal. Kaya

naman habang itinataguyod nila

ang seguridad at buong tapang na

nilalabanan ang karahasan at

kriminalidad, tinatapatan natin ito

ng pagtutok sa kanilang mga

pangangailangan,” the President

said.

Aside from giving the

police and military equipment, the

President said his administration

also released 4,000 certificate of

entitlement to lot allocation to the

members of the police and military

last month.

The government will ex-

pand the coverage of the housing

program to Visayas and Mindanao,

he said. The program will also

include members of the Bureau of

Jail Management and Penology and

Bureau of Fire Protection, the chief

executive said.

At the same time, the

President expressed optimism

about the country’s condition

saying there’s a better future that

lies ahead for Filipinos with the

reforms that his administration has

initiated.

“Sa tulong ng NDCP,

walang duda na magagawa natin

ito. Harinawa’y sa sama-sama

ninyong pagbabalik-tanaw ngayong

gabi, higit pang tumibay ang

inyong pagkakaisa at tiwala sa isa’t

isa upang sa lalong madaling

panahon, tuluyan na nating

salubungin ang bukang-liwayway

kung saan mas maaliwalas ang

pamumuhay ng lahat ng Pilipino,”

he said.

The National Defense

College of the Philippines, the

country’s leading institution on

defense and security education,

training and research, celebrated its

48th foundation anniversary on

August 12, 2011 with the theme

“Security Leaders at the Forefront

of National Convergence and

Development.”

The defense institution

was established by virtue of

Executive Order No. 44 signed by

President Diosdado Macapagal on

August 12, 1963 aimed at

enhancing the competence of

military and civilian leaders in the

field of national security

administration.

Aquino shares MILF views says peace negotiators must be problem solvers Negotiators of both the

government and the Moro Islamic

Liberation Front (MILF) must be

problem solvers rather than trouble

makers, President Benigno Aquino

said echoing the statements made

by MILF Chair Al Haj Murad

Ebrahim.

“Hopefully, if I can get

everybody’s attention to the

statement that chairman Murad said

himself, iyong negotiating panel

have to be focused, that they are

problem solvers rather than

antagonists. And I am very hopeful

that, that is indicative that there is

an intense desire to achieve a just

and comprehensive peace

agreement,” the President said

referring to Murad’s statements

during an ambush interview

following the courtesy call of the

Philippine Dragon Boat team on

Friday in Malacanang. The President's meeting

with the MILF leader as well as

other high ranking officials of the

rebel group last week in Japan was

aimed at showing the government’s

sincerity in pursuing the ongoing

peace talks and at the same time

fast track the negotiations.

Malacanang assured this

week that it would consider the

views of all stakeholders in the

peace talks with the MILF before

both panels meet on August 22 to

24.

According to Secretary

Teresita Deles of the Office of the

Presidential Adviser on the Peace

Process (OPPAP), the government

panel will continue to work with

different constituencies in

preparation for the said meeting.

In a media briefing last

week, government chief negotiator

Marvic Leonen said both sides

were expected to discuss the

significant agenda in the upcoming

formal talks this month.

At the same time, Leonen

said there was no “secret deal”

forged between the government and

the MILF during the Japan meeting

adding that the Aquino government

will not commit the same mistakes

made by the past administration.
