It is hard to believe, but winter is at our door. While we generally do not get the snowflakes or the frosty winter temperatures, we do get the holiday season. The

upcoming holidays may have different meanings to many of our readers due to our diverse cultural backgrounds and religious beliefs, but for all of us this should be a time to reflect on the year gone by.

It’s the season to gauge our own conduct. Have we reached out to our neighbors to lend a helping hand to those in need? Have we made enough time to truly spend with our children, our parents, our family and our friends? This is the time to mend minor disagreements, to forgive and forget.

This is also the time to think of those less fortunate than ourselves. We should teach our children to share our good fortune with our loved ones, as well as those in need. There are families right here in our communities who need our assistance. Help make the season brighter for them by giving generously.

Consider giving your children gifts they will cherish for a lifetime; the gift of love and the gift of giving. The holidays are the perfect time to teach your chil-dren to be thankful for what they have and to help others. For that is truly what the holidays are about.

Happy Holidays!

Sincerely,

Sven BudzischPublisher/Owner

We want to make you smile this holiday season. Just as we have done for our current patients.

“This is the best office ever!! The wait is minimal, the staff is ALWAYS friendly and informative, and both the Orthodontist and Dentist are exceptional.” –E.A.

“We are paying out of pocket for my son’s braces, but the price was very fair. We didn’t have to haggle for a payment plan. A reasonable agreement was offered right from the start. I recommend this office every chance I get!” –K.M

“When we realized braces were going to be needed we made an appointment for an evaluation at a different office. We decided there must be something better out there and we were so right. Dr. Grosman’s office is a pleasant, well organized and efficient place to go. The staff is exceptional and knowledgeable. We are very happy we went with our second choice.” –V.D.

“Easily the best dental experience a child could hope for! We drive quite a distance to your facility, and it’s absolutely worth it! From the kid-friendly waiting room, to the anxious mom-friendly emergency care for dental injuries. We wouldn’t consider any other dentist in the area.” –S.B.

Over 500 people attended the City of Pembroke Pines Veterans Day Ceremony at City Center on

November 11. The annual ceremony honored those living and deceased who have served in the United States Military. It took place in front of the Pembroke Pines Veterans Memorial, a fifteen foot black granite obelisk that is surrounded by commemorative bricks.

The Veterans Day program was filled with a variety of speakers and patriotic music. Guest speak-ers included: Pembroke Pines Mayor Frank C. Ortis; Vice Mayor Jay Schwartz; City Commissioners Carl Shechter (WWII-Army), Angelo Castillo and Iris Siple; Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz and Colonel Willie Berges of the United States Southern Command.

The Pembroke Pines Charter Middle School Band West Campus, under the direction of Dayna Cole, played God Bless America, Armed Forces on Parade, In Honor of the Fallen and the theme from JAG. Retired Naval Lieutenant Commander Pastor Peter Tokar inspired guests with his moving invocation. The Pembroke Pines Police and Fire Department Honor Guard presented the colors, Boy Scout Troop 460 led the Pledge of Allegiance, and Katie Harmon sang the national anthem and Proud to be an American.

Following Pastor Tokars’ benediction and clos-

ing remarks, as well as a song by Natalie Laing, the Veterans gathered in front of the Memorial for the annual group photo.

“This is what Pembroke Pines is about - respecting and honoring those who love our Country, our City and who fought to make a day like this possible,” said Mayor Ortis. “We always appreciate and will never forget what our Veterans have done for us.”

Over 13 million ameriCan kids will be bullied this year, making it the most common

form of violence experienced by young people in the nation. Approximately 400 people of all ages, including grandparents, parents and students, recently gathered at the Susan B. Katz River of Grass Theater of the Performing Arts to learn more about bullying and how to put an end to it.

Pembroke Pines Mayor Frank C. Ortis was the host and emcee for the Anti-Bully Forum, which featured the new documentary film “Bully.” Directed by Sundance and Emmy-award winning filmmaker Lee Hirsch, the movie captures images over the course of the 2009/2010 school year. It offers an intimate look at how bully-ing has touched five kids and their families, and reveals a problem that transcends geographic, racial, ethnic and economic borders.

After the movie, a panel took questions from the audience, which included Pembroke Pines

Commissioners Iris Siple and Carl Shechter. The panel consisted of the following educators: Dr. Kimberly Pizzo, assistant principal of PPCMS-Central; Kenneth Bass, principal of PPCMS-Central; Peter

Bayer, principal of PPCHS; Chip Osborn, principal of Walter C. Young Middle School and P.P.P.D Captain Al Xiques.

“Our distinguished panel of princi-pals discussed the latest information on the topic of bullying and interven-tion techniques,” said Mayor Ortis.

“Bully” was sponsored by the U.S. Conference of Mayors, which joined the Bully Project in a historic campaign to end bullying and make schools a safe place for all learners. The Bully Project is an advocacy and educational organization that was inspired by the film. During National Bullying Prevention Month in October, mayors in all 50 states hosted screen-ings of the film and held strategy ses-sions with key stakeholders to create ongoing, citywide bullying prevention initiatives.

Jacklyn laflamme unveils New Mural at susan b. katz theater of performing artsby Debby teiCh

EleCted offiCials, members of the Arts and Cultural Advisory Board and residents recently celebrated art-

ist Jacklyn Laflamme’s new outdoor mural, “Comedy and Tragedy,” which is painted on the archway entering the north side of the Susan B. Katz Theater of Performing Arts Center. After a ribbon cutting, Laflamme was presented with flowers and a certifi-cate of appreciation. She then joined her guests for a reception inside the theater.

As the Artist in Residence for the past year, she has received free studio space at Studio 18 in the Pines. In return, she was required to create a public art project that serves the community. The mural depicts the Comedy and Tragedy masks, and ties in the name Susan B. Katz Theater of the Performing Arts on a flowing red ribbon surrounding the masks.

“I was asked to design a mural that satis-fies the theme of comedy and tragedy,” said Laflamme. “In keeping with the artwork that was already inside the theater, I presented a sketch of the traditional comedy and tragedy masks that are typically associated with drama.”

After the City set up scaffold-ing, Laflamme began drawing the image with chalk. Next she applied exterior latex paint to complete the mural.

“It is always challenging to paint something that is such a large scale,” said Laflamme.

This was the ninth mural that Laflamme has painted, including two others in Pembroke Pines. She completed two tempo-rary holiday murals on the windows of City Hall. This one, however, is permanent.

“The nice thing about painting a public mural is that so many people get to enjoy the art,” said Laflamme. “I hope to color the world one mural at a time.”

Tom De Vita was recently selected as the new Artist in Residence.

What sets Pill Box apart from other pharmacies in the area? The owners (who are also pharmacists) are there to greet and help you Our customer service is “A1 ” We are the biggest pharmacy/medical supplier in Broward County, with fitters on staff for your medical supply needs We have a specially trained PCCA staff for your compounding needs and carry specialty supplements Angela Pressman, Pharm D , is an expert in supple-ments, as well as hormone balancing and consulting for both men and women We also have very unique cards and gifts that you won’t find in the big box stores

able to speak to a person We (people) answer the phones right away with a nice friendly greeting

Why did you open Pill Box? I always wanted to be in my own business After being introduced to a pharma-cist and owner of his own store, I decided that’s exactly what I wanted I worked hard for it I went to school, worked in a local pharmacy, and studied every day for five years When I graduated pharmacy school in New York in 1981, I packed my bags and moved to Florida In 1985, I opened my first store

How many Pill Box stores are there? There are currently four stores In 1985, I opened the Taft Street location In 1992, I opened Pill Box II in the Memorial Hospital West Medical Office building In 1997, I opened Weston Pill Box In 2013, I opened my newest store, Pill Box Pines West

That’s Phil the Pill He is our mascot Phil started out as a cartoon drawing and since has taken on a life of his own - kind of like Pinocchio Phil is one of several attractions at Pill Box on Taft St There are trains running on the ceiling, talking pirates, a pharmacy museum, and a lifelike security guard, Nick, watching over the medical department You have to see it to believe it It’s like no other pharmacy you have been in

The City of pembroke pines art and Cultural department recently selected Tom De Vita, M.F.A. Artist, Designer and Professor, as the new City of Pembroke Pines Artist in Residence at Studio 18 in the Pines. He

will receive free studio space for a year, create a city beautification project, and have the opportunity to participate in group shows/exhibitions at Studio 18 in the Pines.

“Tom De Vita is an amazing artist and this honor is very well deserved,” said Holly Bonkowski, Cultural Arts Coordinator for the City of Pembroke Pines. “He has dedicated his life to the arts and has always maintained a high level of profes-sionalism and creativity.”

De Vita, who has been a professional artist for 25 years, is an American Figurative Realist painter who works primarily in oil. He exhibits locally and nationally, including a recent solo exhibition titled “The Locals” at The Lee Wagener Gallery, in the Hollywood/Fort Lauderdale Airport, Terminal 2. His work is about finding a harmony in dissonance. He creates paintings which appear both old and new, while juxtaposing overlays of animals and figures to express ambiguous and open-ended narratives.

As the Artist in Residence, De Vita plans to further his artistic investigations into Figurative Realism with a concentration on the traditional methodologies of art making, and much more.

“The Artist in Residency Program will give me the opportunity to explore and purchase different materials in the development of a series of work that pairs the symbolic relationships of animals and people,” said De Vita. “For the public art project, I propose a historical painting of Pembroke Pines, on canvas, for the new Civic Center. This painting will be educational, historical, and will exemplify the rich and diverse heritage of our City. I also propose a ‘call to artists’ to have sev-eral Pembroke Pines high school art students assist me in the development of this

painting. The students will be able to share in its creation and be part of this cherished gift to our City.”

Born and raised in New York, De Vita is a classically trained artist who earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Painting, Drawing, and Sculpture from St. John’s University. Upon graduating, he relocated to South Beach, where he and his wife Lynda opened De Vita Studio, Inc., a visual arts company that develops murals, fine art, illustrations, fashion, and art education. In 2009, De Vita earned his Master of Fine Arts Degree from Miami International University of Art and Design.

Currently, De Vita is a professor at the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale and Broward College teaching painting, drawing, design, and portfolio. He also holds drawing and painting workshops in his studio at Studio 18 in the Pines.

Studio 18 in the Pines is located at 1101 Poinciana Drive. For information, visit www.ppines.com/studio18 or call 954-961-6067. To view Tom De Vita’s work, visit www.tomdevita.com.

Over 150 people attended opening day festivi-ties for the West Pines Girls Softball Diamond Dusters at the newly renovated Silver Lakes South Park.

Events included the presentation of colors by the Pembroke Pines Color Guard, the Pledge of Allegiance, opening day comments from Mayor Frank C. Ortis, and comments from Vice Mayor Jay Schwartz. All of the Diamond Dusters had an oppor-tunity to meet Mayor Ortis and Vice Mayor Schwartz.

“We asked Mayor Ortis to throw the first ball on the new field at Silver Lakes South Park,” said Annette Calcamuggi, sec-retary of West Pines Girls Softball. “Mayor Ortis has been so supportive of the park renovation.”

The renovations included a new drainage system, a shade sail installed in front of the concession stand, and brick pav-ers placed at the park entrance and in front of the concession stand. There is also a “Walk of Fame,” which consists of bricks engraved with personalized messages honoring the softball players, as well as the names of children and friends who play at the park. The sale of the bricks was a fundraiser to help cover future league expenses

Approximately 100 girls, ages 8 to 15 years, play in the West Pines Girls Softball League. Registration for the spring/sum-mer season begins on December 15. Online registration and forms are available on the Diamond Dusters website, westpines-leaguesoftball.org.

Silver Lakes South Park is located at 17601 SW 2nd Street. For registration infor-mation, visit westpinesleaguesoftball.org or call 954-253-9710.

A well told story Can eliCit an endless array of emotions. Fourth grade students and teachers at the City of Pembroke Pines Charter Elementary School – FSU campus recently participated in a workshop to

learn how to improve their storytelling skills. “Storytelling has been around since the beginning of time,” said Mabel Medina,

4th grade team leader. “We have to make sure it is not lost.”The entire 4th grade had an opportunity to meet with Dr. Caren Neile, found-

ing director of the South Florida Storytelling Project. The Broward County Library sponsored Neile’s visit in conjunction with the 13th Annual StoryBook Festival,

“Home Sweet Home Florida,” which was held last month at the Southwest Regional Library.

In the morning, Neile met with 4th grade teachers to suggest a variety of ways that they could help students develop their ideas to become better writers and present-ers. In the afternoon, she met with the students. She began by teach-ing them how to conduct an inter-view to gather information for their stories. Next, they practiced their body language, facial expressions, physical emotions and eye contact to make sure that their delivery was as effective as possible. By the end of the session, they were ready to

put their new skills to the test. All of the students were assigned the task of interviewing their families to find

out information for a paper, as well as a presentation. The topic was “How My Family Came to Florida.” The teachers supplied some sample interview questions and a rubric. Each student had an opportunity to tell their own story to the class.

“It was a fun and interesting way to help them improve their speaking, listen-ing and writing skills, which are all part of the Common Core Standards,” said Medina. “They also learned new things about their heritage.”

Teachers from each of the six classes selected the top two stories and the authors told their stories in front of the entire grade. A winner from each class was selected and they shared their stories with the public at the StoryBook Festival. The win-ners were: Anjali Balla, Valentina Machuca, Alan Lopez, Nicole Becerra, Connor Pierce, and Elisa Ortuzar.

Students at City of pembroke pines Charter Elementary School East Campus recently joined millions of young people across

the nation, as they became rocket scientists for the day during the 7th annual 4-H National Youth Science Day. This year’s event was Rockets to the Rescue, an interactive project that explored the field of aero-space engineering.

“This STEM/STEAM/STREAM project was truly an engaging, learning experience,” said Lisa Dizengoff, East Campus Science teacher. “We are proud of our students’ work and their results, from the launch pad of PPCS-East today.....to NASA tomorrow!”

During the project, all 680 students on the cam-pus (k-5) applied the knowledge they gained from the STEM (science, technology, engineering, math)/

STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, math)/STREAM (science, technology, reading, engineering, art, math) program to learn about rocketry. They stud-ied the basic construction of a rocket and discussed a variety of topics, such as force, motion and energy.

Scientists in kindergarten through 3rd grade experimented with water rockets, air pressure rockets and chemical canister rockets. They also had a chance to launch model rockets.

Students in 4th and 5th used their engineering and problem solving skills to construct “stomp rockets.” They utilized card stock and tape, as well as PVC pip-ing to roll body of the rocket. They found materials in the science lab, such as cups, to create templates for the nose cones. They constructed launching devices from 2 liter soda bottles, tubing and duct tape.

“The objective of STEM/STEAM/STREAM is to inspire problem-solving, critical thinking, and the full utilization of all of the academic areas: Reading, Math, Science, Social Studies Art,” said Dizengoff.

“Cross–curricular, multi-disciplinary, engaging experi-ences are crucial to learning. They motivate, inspire and most importantly allow students to take owner-ship and control of their learning. They are learning and comprehending by doing…not memorizing. This event afforded an array of engaging, experiences and learning that were not only useful for this project, but are applicable to their everyday lives.”

Veterans honored at Chapel trail elementaryby Debby teiCh

For the fifth year, students at Chapel Trail Elementary in Pembroke Pines honored their parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles,

who fought for their freedom. Approximately 50 Veterans, who have relatives at the school, were invited to a celebration and breakfast in observance of Veterans Day. Some even travelled from out of town for the event.

“The Veterans Day celebration gave our school a chance to acknowledge, thank and honor the veterans within our school community for their com-mitment, dedication, and perseverance,” said Liz Grafe, media specialist. “There are veterans in many of our families and we should never forget that they defend our freedom on a daily basis. We should never take any of it for granted and always be thankful and respectful towards them.”

After each veteran was introduced by branch (Army, Air Force, Marines, Navy, Coast Guard), they paraded around the bus loop with their families. Dressed in red, white and blue, students in PreK-5th,

faculty and staff clapped and waved as they passed. Many of the classes displayed patriotic items they made for the event, such as hats, banners, and signs.

The Safety Patrols led everyone in the Pledge of Allegiance, and the chorus, led by Music Director Leonard Hodge, sang the National Anthem. Principal Teresa Lipkins welcomed the veterans and introduced some distinguished guests, including Patti Good, School Board Chair; Donna Korn, School Board Vice-Chair; and City of Pembroke Pines Mayor Frank Ortis. Each of the guests addressed the students and veterans. The choir sang “United We Stand,” which was composed by Hodge, and 5th grade student Sophia Hernandez read a poem she authored titled “Thank You.”

After the ceremony, the veterans had an opportunity to visit with the students. They also enjoyed juice and coffee, as well as apple pies

donated by McDonald’s. The PTA supplied glazed donuts and juice boxes for all of the students.

Grafe says that the event helps students under-stand the diversity of the veterans.

“They saw women in uniform and realized that the military is made up of both men and women,” said Grafe. “It also consists of Moms and Dads of our own students.”

Elementary sChool students throughout pembroke pines recently learned about the importance of working smoke alarms. They com-peted in the Pembroke Pines Fire Department’s 18th Annual Fire Prevention

Week Poster Contest, which promoted Fire Prevention Week’s theme “Working Smoke Alarms Save Lives: Test Yours Every Month.” The winning posters were displayed at Pembroke Pines City Hall during Fire Prevention Week.

According to the latest National Fire Protection Association research, working smoke alarms cut the chance of dying in a fire in half. Meanwhile, almost two-thirds of home fire deaths result from fires in homes with no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms.

“In a fire, seconds count,” said Fire Marshal Sandra Lluis. “Roughly half of home fire deaths result from fires reported at night between 11pm and 7am, when most people are asleep. Home smoke alarms can alert people to a fire before it spreads, giving everyone enough time to get out.”

Approximately 700 students from 14 schools participated in the poster con-

test. According to the rules, the poster had to contain the Fire Prevention Week theme. Each child had to make their own poster, which was judged on originality. Trophies were awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place.

“The contest is a great opportunity for children to show their creative talents and get them thinking about fire safety at the same time,” said Fire Chief John Picarello.

During October, the Pembroke Pines Fire Department offered a variety of pro-grams aimed at educating the public on fire safety. In addition to the poster con-test, members of the fire department held 20 fire safety presentations at schools, churches, Home Depot and other locations. They also gave away hundreds of helmets, fire prevention promotional items, brochures and more.

For information on the Fire Prevention Week poster contest in Pembroke Pines, call the Pembroke Pines Fire Prevention Bureau at 954-435-6531. To learn more about smoke alarms and “Working Smoke Alarms Saves Lives,” visit NFPA’s website at www.firepreventionweek.org.

Eyelashes and eyebrows play a CruCial part in an individual’s physical appearance. They both help to give the face symmetry. Thus, complete or partial loss of

either one can lead to patients feeling subconscious about their looks. Today, there are various techniques available to help restore and improve appearance. Options include both surgi-cal and non-surgical treatments.

There are many causes of hair loss that affect the eyebrows and eyelashes. Regarding the eyebrows, excessive plucking

and electrolysis done for cosmetic reshaping is a very common cause. Other causes include trauma, such as burns, accidents, and some forms of cancer related radiation treatment.

Medical problems that have been implicated as causes include thyroid dis-ease, autoimmune disorders and hormone imbalance. These medical issues are important to diagnose correctly, since they will impact the approach taken to restoring hair growth. There are many prescriptions and over the counter drugs that may hinder hair growth, therefore it is imperative to review the current medication list. Some of the more common medications include cancer drugs, hormone treatments, anti-inflammatory agents (ex., Motrin, Aleve, etc) and choles-terol lowering pills.

Restoration of the eyelashes and eyebrows may be done by either surgical or non-surgical techniques. Non-surgical treatment involves the use of a specialized serum that is formulated specifically for these areas. The serum enhances exist-ing hairs to grow faster, stronger and thicker in order to provide better cosmetic coverage.

For patients to respond to the serum, they must have an adequate number of existing hairs still present in order to react to the treatment. Individuals that have partially or completely lost their eyelashes or eyebrows will not benefit from the serum treatment, since there is no hair present to treat. Surgical transplantation is reserved for this group.

The technique of transplanting these areas is similar to the standard hair transplantation procedure done on balding men and women. First hairs that will be used for the transplant are taken from the scalp and separated with the use of a microscope to single hair grafts. The grafts are then placed into the area of the eyebrows or eyelashes where the patient wishes to have better coverage. The artistic placement of the grafts is critical in order to give patients a very natural appearance.

The procedure for eyebrows may involve restoring anywhere from 50 to over 200 grafts for each side. The number will vary depending on the extent of existing hairs already present and the final look (size and fullness) that the patient desires. In eyelash transplantation, the numbers will be significantly lower, usually vary-ing from 20 - 80 grafts per eye.

There are some important considerations to keep in mind when contemplat-ing transplantation of eyelash or eyebrows. The hair that is transplanted from the scalp keeps its normal pattern of growth, which is faster than the native hairs. This means that the patient will need to trim the newly implanted hairs every few weeks, on average every 2-4 weeks. With the eyelashes, the hairs when implanted are oriented to curve as the existing lashes. Depending on the patients transplanted hair characteristics, ex., straight versus slightly curly, shaping of the lashes with a manual curler may be required to keep same shape as native hairs. Once the hair is transplanted, the results are permanent.

South florida homeowners and consumers in

foreclosure or at risk of foreclosure are inun-dated with commercials, mailers, phone calls and even personal visits from companies claim-ing they can save their home. These companies are usually unlicensed and inexperienced, looking for a quick profit at the expense of the consumer.

Here are some of the foreclosure rescue scams against which all homeowners must beware:

▸ Out of state and local companies guarantee they can cancel the foreclo-sure process, and save your home. They make these promises in official looking documents that appear issued by the government or by the lender. At the bottom of the mailer is usually a tiny disclaimer that reveals the com-pany is not tied to any federal agency or bank. Since these companies are non-attorneys, or attorneys NOT licensed to practice in the State of Florida, they cannot represent you in court, and you will lose your home. They will also charge you an upfront fee to assist you with a loan modification, which is illegal under Florida law, punishable by civil and criminal penalties.

▸ Many realtors have also jumped on the foreclosure rescue bandwagon, and are pushing short sales which are not in the best interests of many South Florida homeowners. I have witnessed realtors in court falsely posing as homeowners or as “attorneys” before a judge in order to obtain foreclosure sale cancelations. This is a dangerous game for both realtor and homeowner. We represent many clients whose realtors have even forged homeowners’ signatures on official court documents and filed last minute bankruptcy petitions to stop foreclosure sales without permission from the homeowner. This process is also illegal and is being aggressively investigated by the U.S. Department of Justice.

▸ One final scam is the so-called “land trust” transfer. The way this unethi-cal scam works is a company will partner with an unethical law firm or attorney to transfer your home’s title to a land trust; a new entity over which you have zero control. Then they usually file a court action by the land trust to remove the mortgage lien from the property. This process is not a legiti-mate means of saving your home, and it will fail. You will lose your money and your home if you fall for this scam.

If you have already fallen prey to any of these scams, demand your money back immediately and go to the appropriate authorities if they refuse to refund your money. There is only one way for homeowners to avoid these unethical and illegal scams -- hire a reputable and knowledgeable law firm, like the Arcia Law Firm, with nearly 20 years of experience, to represent your interests and obtain the best possible outcome, through aggressive foreclosure defense, loan modifi-cation, short sale or bankruptcy.

More detailed explanations of different options available to homeowners in foreclosure, at risk of foreclosure, or considering bankruptcy are discussed in the instructional DVD developed by the Arcia Law Firm entitled “Fight For Your Home.” If you mention that you heard about the DVD through this magazine you will receive a FREE copy during your visit to discuss your case in detail with Omar Arcia.

Congenitally prominent ears are a CosmetiC deformity that can have a severe emotional and behav-ioral effect on a child. When a child’s ear protrudes too

far from the side of the scalp, a surgical procedure known as an otoplasty can be performed to enhance the position and appearance of the external ear.

Five percent of children are affected by prominent ear protrusion. The majority of children genetically inherit the appearance from their parents. Prominent ears can present in

a myriad of forms including cup ear, shell ear, bat ear, Machiavellian ear and lop ear.

Most commonly children and adults will often camouflage the deformity with hairstyling. Timing of repair can be crucial in avoiding psychological damage. The ear achieves 85% of adult size by age 3 years and nearly adult size by 6 or 7 years of age.

As an individual ages, elongation of the lobule (lobe) gives the appearance of continued ear growth. The most common deformity in prominent ears is an under-developed or poorly defined antihelix. This is the part of the ear fold that lies inside the outer rim of the ear.

The otoplasty surgery is performed through a concealed incision along the back of the ear. Correction of protruding ears uses sur-gical techniques to create or increase the antihelical fold (just inside the rim of the ear) and to reduce enlarged con-chal cartilage (the largest and deepest concavity of the external ear). The cartilage of the ear is reshaped by dif-ferent suturing techniques. The excess cartilage can be excised and the ear reposi-tioned closer to the side of the head.

The procedure usually takes 60 to 90 minutes to perform. It is performed under local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia under the direct supervi-sion of a board certified anesthesiologist. The patient can resume their normal activities within three to five days wearing a soft headband for one to two weeks to protect the ears. Ear surgery, otoplasty, offers almost immediate results in cases of protruding ears visible when the dressings that support the new shape of the ear during the initial phases of healing are removed. Children and adults who are concerned about the appearance of their ears can experience both the cosmetic as well as the emotional improvement of otoplasty surgery.

Most people think of the holiday season with gleeful anticipation of time with family. For couples who have been through a divorce, the holiday sea-

son can often be a very stressful time. This stress can also be felt by the children of a divorced couple. It is not uncommon for holiday visitation issues to surface during this time of year. Hopefully the parties’ settlement agreement or Parenting Plan is specific as to time sharing.

Over the course of approximately 30 years of practice, my clients have experienced many issues concerning holiday visitation. The biggest obstacle to solving an issue in court during this time of year is the reality that court time is very difficult to schedule during December. As such, last minute issues usually will not be addressed. Of course, the parties are always able to try and work things out on their own or with the help of attorneys and mediators. I would certainly suggest not waiting until the “last minute” to address any concerns.

The best way to insure there will be no conflicts during the holidays is to antici-pate potential problems ahead of time and address them in the marital settlement agreement. The more specific your agreement is, the more likely you will not experience conflicts along the way. For couples with minor children, who have been divorced in the past five years, Parenting Plans have been mandatory. These Parenting Plans are designed to be very specific as to time sharing in an effort to head off any trouble in years to come. Unfortunately, these Parenting Plans were not used prior to the latter part of 2008. Therefore, many existing agreements do not include this provision.

I believe the most important thing to remember is that any time sharing arrangement should always keep the best interest of the children as a priority. Children want to spend time with both parents and this is especially true during the holidays. They also want to be a part of any family gatherings. Sometimes that is not always possible, but advanced planning may be able to achieve this goal.

Often parents divide the entire winter break in half, with Christmas Day being the “exchange day.” As an example, in odd numbered years, such as 2013, perhaps Dad has the children from the day school ends until noon Christmas Day. Mom will pick up the kids and keep them until school begins again. Next year, they can reverse the schedule. In some cultures, Christmas Eve is more of a celebration, so perhaps one parent can celebrate every Christmas Eve and the other Christmas Day.

Also, remember that “gift giving” is not a competition, with the winner being the parent who spends the most money. Often times the finances of each parent may not be the same and one must buy gifts within his/her budget. For a parent to embarrass the other by purchasing a more expensive and lavish gift is only going to lead to hard feelings and potential problems. Hopefully, the parents can discuss this issue beforehand and plan together.

Often parents wish to visit family out of town. Consider the feelings of your for-mer spouse and the children in the planning such a trip. Children have the need to be with extended family during the Holidays. Perhaps holiday trips out of town can be rotated from year to year between parents.

Mom and Dad can certainly make the holiday season a joyous time for their children or they can focus on themselves and make it a time that everyone would like to forget. If you need any further questions answered, please feel free to contact my office.

is a device inserted into a shoe. It can range from a felt pad to a custom-made shoe insert. It can correct an abnormal or irregular walking pattern. Orthotics allow people to stand, walk, and run better and with more comfort.

While over the counter orthotics, typically seen in drug stores, are available and may help ease mild symptoms,

they typically do not correct the wide range of symptoms that prescription foot orthoses can. Prescription orthoses are custom made to fit a person’s unique foot structure. Orthotics come in many shapes, sizes, and materials and fall into three general categories: those that change foot function, those that are mainly protec-tive in design, and those that combine functional control and protection.

Rigid orthotics fall into the first category. They are designed to control function and are used normally for walking and dress shoes. They are often made of firm material like plastic or carbon fiber. They are made from a mold after a podiatric physician takes a plaster cast (or other image) of the foot. Rigid orthotics control motion in two major foot joints that lie below the ankle joint. They can improve or eliminate strains, aches, and pains in the legs, thighs, and lower back.

Soft orthotics are mostly used to absorb shock, increase balance, and take pressure off sore spots of the foot. They are effective for diabetic, arthritic, and deformed feet. Soft orthotics are usually made of cushioned materials, so they can be worn against the sole of the foot. They extend from the heel past the ball of the foot, and include the toes. Soft orthotics, like rigid ones, are made from a mold after the podiatric physician takes a plaster cast.

Lastly, there are the semi-rigid orthotics. They provide foot balance for walking or engaging in sports. They are typically made from soft material and reinforced with more rigid material. Sometimes they are prescribed for children with flat feet and in toeing or out toeing disorders. They are additionally used to help athletes mitigate pain while they compete.

If you are thinking about orthotics, visit your podiatric physician and get a pair uniquely suited to your individual foot and needs.

Most heart and blood vessel problems develop over time and occur when arteries develop atherosclerosis, the gradual buildup of plaque inside the arteries. If left unchecked, significant plaque buildup can lead to reduced blood flow through the arteries and eventually to blood clots that occur when plaques rupture. Ultimately, it is the effect of clots on the flow of blood to the heart or brain that can lead to a heart attack or stroke.

What are the risk factors for heart disease? There are many risk factors that contribute to the development of heart disease. It is important to know that some risk factors, called “non-modifiable risk factors,” such as hereditary genetic conditions, cannot be changed. But some risk factors, called “modifiable risk factors,” can be controlled or treated. The more risk factors you have, the greater your chance of developing heart disease. And higher levels of each risk factor correlate with a higher risk for heart disease.

Modifiable risk factors

Hypertension is the single biggest risk factor for stroke. It also plays a significant role in heart attacks. It can be prevented and successfully treated, but only if you have it diagnosed and stick to your recommended management plan.

Abnormal blood lipid levels, that is high total cholesterol, high levels of triglycerides, high levels of low-density lipoprotein or low levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol all increase the risk of heart disease and stroke. Changing to a healthy diet, exercise and medication can modify your blood lipid profile.

Tobacco use, whether it is smoking or chewing tobacco, increases risks of heart disease. The risk is especially high if you started smoking when young, smoke heavily or are a woman. Stopping tobacco use can reduce your risk of heart disease significantly, no matter how long you have smoked. Non-smokers exposed to secondhand smoke increase their risk of heart disease as well.

Physical inactivity increases the risk of heart disease and stroke by 50%. People who don’t exercise regularly are 1.5 times more likely to develop heart disease. That’s why exercise is such an important part of a heart healthy lifestyle.

Obesity or being overweight, especially if a lot of weight is located in your waist area, increases your risk for health problems, including high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol, high triglycerides, diabetes, heart disease and stroke.

Type II diabetes is a major risk factor for coronary heart disease and stroke. Having diabetes makes you twice as likely as someone who does not, to develop heart disease. If you do not control diabetes then you are more likely to develop heart disease at an earlier age than other people, and it will be more devastating. If you are a pre-menopausal woman, your diabetes cancels out the protective effect of estrogen and your risk of heart disease rises significantly.

What can you do you improve your heart health?Know the risk factors, and be sure to talk to you doctor about the ones that apply to you. Take action to change your lifestyle, and work to prevent your modifiable risk factors from compromising your heart health.

pinched Nerves in the foot

Nerves are small string-like struCtures that provide sensation and/or give the signal to muscles to move. Some nerves may be susceptible to injury because

of their location in the foot or ankle. The most commonly injured nerves are on the ball of the foot, located at the base of the sec-ond, third and fourth toes. These nerves provide sensation only to the middle three toes and may be compressed by a ligament that runs over it.

Here is a look at the symptoms, causes and treatment options for pinched nerves in the foot.Symptoms:

▸ Pain on the ball of the foot. ▸ Numbness, burning, shooting or tingling sensation in the toes. Some or all

of these symptoms may be present. ▸ Cramping in the toes. ▸ Aggravated by running, aerobics or activities that put stress on the ball of

the foot. ▸ Pain may be lessened by taking the shoe off and rubbing the foot. ▸ Driving may aggravate the ball of the foot.

Causes: ▸ Compression of the nerves against a tight ligament. ▸ Arthritis or bone spurs from the adjacent joints. ▸ Soft tissue cysts causing nerve compression. ▸ Trauma to the ball of the foot. ▸ Nerve may become irritated from tight

shoes or sports that put stress on the ball of the foot, especially tennis and running.

The goal of treatment is to reduce the inflammation around the nerve and prevent further trauma to it. Treatment options include:

▸ Anti-inflammatories may be used to lessen inflam-mation; oral medication or cortisone injections may be beneficial.

▸ Changing to wider shoes without a heel.

▸ Changing activities temporarily from weight bearing exercises to biking and swimming.

▸ Physical therapy may be of benefit in reducing inflammation. ▸ Metatarsal pads. ▸ Orthotics to correct faulty biomechanics. They can be used in small heels

and all sports shoes. ▸ Localized injections into the nerve to stop the nerve from functioning.

Removing the nerve surgically may be necessary if conservative treatment fails. This is an outpatient procedure. A local or twilight anesthesia is used. The procedure takes approximately 15 minutes. One or two days off of work is needed. A surgical shoe is worn for four to five days and then a sneaker may be used. Postoperative pain is minimal. The patient progresses to regular shoes over a two to four week period. Certain activities such as biking and swimming can be done in a week; sports may take three to eight weeks to resume.

50 December 2014 | Our City PembrOke Pines

I Cannot believe that the holidays are already upon us. It has been another wonderful year for all of us in Pembroke Pines, and I want to send season’s greetings to all

of the Pembroke Pines residents and businesses that make this a very special City in which to live and work. May you and your families enjoy the very best of the holiday season.

Looking back on this past year, some exciting things have happened throughout our City for which we should all be proud. Our City was the only Florida City on Money

Magazine’s “Best Places to Live in America 2014” list, where we ranked #32 out of the top #50. We were also honored by being named 2014’s Best City of Hispanic Entrepreneurs. We were awarded one of 66 National Endowment for the Arts “Our Town” grants, a $50,000 grant that will support the design of our proposed Civic Center’s performing arts facilities and plaza. We were also recognized by the Florida League of Cities for our “Re-engage, Recycle, and Reinvigorate Our Environment” program and are the proud recipient of the League’s Environmental Stewardship Award.

Pembroke Pines has participated in many initiatives throughout the year, such as the “Let’s Move” comprehensive initiative launched by First Lady Michelle Obama that is dedicated to solving the problem of obesity in America within a generation; “The Mayor’s Campaign to End Bullying,” launched by the U.S. Conference of Mayors, for which we pledge to go beyond what is already in place in schools and join in a national fight to stop bullying; and the “Extra Mile Day” initiative, an effort which urges all individuals to not only go the extra mile in his or her own life, but to also acknowledge all those who inspire others or makes their organizations, families, communities, country or world better.

We have seen new businesses now call our City home and are excited to see our City/Civic Center project progress. In addition, this year Pembroke Pines adopted our first Economic Development Strategic plan to ensure that our great City remains the best place to live and work.

I have great hopes for a new year in which all of our best expectations are met. May it be a safe and joyous holiday season, with a happy and prosperous New Year!

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact my office at 954-435-6505 or by e-mail at [email protected].

Tamy m. faierman, m.d., knows how to help her patients look and feel their best through plastic and reconstructive surgery She listens carefully to each patient’s desires and concerns in order to

deliver the highest level of specialized individual care and obtain dramatic results

Dr Faierman answered some commonly asked questions about her practice

Describe your practice. I offer cosmetic plastic surgery, with a focus on surgical body contouring and minimally invasive facial rejuvenation

What is your approach to patient care? As an experienced surgeon, I am able to apply my expertise and aesthetic sense in order to obtain the most natural results possible I look at the patient as a complete individual and devise a treatment plan that suits their physique, as well as their overall lifestyle

What differentiates your practice? The individu-alized holistic approach that I offer to my patients differentiates my practice from others In addition

to the patients’ surgical needs, their overall health issues are addressed preop-eratively, therefore assuring that they get the best results with minimal risk

What is the benefit of a holistic approach? My holistic approach encom-passes all of my patients’ needs Therefore, my practice includes on-site access to a Nutritionist, a physician of Functional Medicine, an Aesthetician, a Life Coach, and an Acupuncturist

What is the benefit of minimally invasive cosmetic procedures? Minimally invasive cosmetic procedures have changed all the rules In under an hour, you can wipe away years and go back to the office looking great Throughout my career as a plastic surgeon, I have always encouraged my patients to consider small procedures earlier, rather than wait until radical corrections are necessary The goal is to retain your youthful good looks throughout your adult life

What surgical services do you offer? We offer the following surgi-cal services: Body Contouring; Breast Augmentation; Breast Reduction; Breast Lift; Full body makeover post weight loss or pregnancy; Body Lift; Abdominoplasty; Liposuction; Liposculpture; Blepharoplasty; Earlobe Repair

Paella is a tradi-tional Spanish dish that gets its name

from the shallow pan used for cooking The dish is made with a base of rice and saffron, typically with assorted seafood La Paellera specializes in this authentic dish prepared by Spanish chefs and deliv-ered right to your door

Owners Mayte and Jose Blanco answer some com-monly asked questions about their new catering company

Please describe your business. We are a group of people from Spain and we love our cui-sine and traditions Our desire is to be known for our most traditional food, the paella Our chef is authentic from Spain and prepares our food in the tradition of our country Every day we select only the best and freshest ingredients, for fresh-ness is the most important part of paella

What is your menu? Our specialty is paella, we offer four different varieties, and the Spanish omelet, which is made with eggs, diced potatoes, and onions

What services do you provide? Our most renowned service is the Paellas To Go, which can be delivered for a minimum of two portions We also offer catering with an ample and exquisite menu to choose from that will make your party or celebration unforgettable When we prepare the paella at your event, in front of your guests, it is guaranteed to be a success

What distinguishes you from your competi-tion? All members of La Paellera are from Spain and our cuisine is authentic and without other culinary influences It is freshly cooked using only authentic ingredients In addition, we are the first to offer a Paella To Go service with a minimum order of just two portions, and very reasonably priced In fact, our rates are, without doubt, the most competitive in the market

Is there anything else you would like read-ers to know about La Paellera? For catering events, we offer clients our authentic Juerga

Flamenca, or Flamenco Feast This includes Spanish folk songs and the traditional dance, the flamenco While our Spanish chef prepares the paella, you and your guests will delight and par-ticipate in our lively and musical folklore, making your event truly unforgettable and authentic

La Paellera is conveniently located in Sunrise. To place an order of Paella To Go or for more information on catering, call (954) 210-0936 or (954) 842-1301 or visit www.CateringLaPaellera.com. Hours of operation are Tuesday through Sunday from 10am to 9pm.
