Event Background

An established technology for bulk power transmission, high-voltage direct current (HVDC) power transmission is being used worldwide, and more than hundred schemes are operating presently all over the world. In India there are three bulk power transmission and seven back-to-back HVDC schemes in operation. Most of the existing HVDC systems use conventional self-commutated converter technology using thyristors.

However, for several recent projects all over the world the Voltage Source Converter (VSC) technology has been selected as the basis due to its controllability, compact modular design, ease of system interface and low environmental impact. Excellent operating experiences of these projects have proved VSC transmission technology to have come of age both for HVDC transmission schemes and for enhancing performance of AC transmission through application of new FACTS devices.

System benefits from the VSC technology, such as independent active and reactive power control and ability to operate with AC systems having low short circuit power makes it ideal choice for application in heavily loaded grid. VSC based technology gives entirely new possibilities to enhance the mega city power supply network.

In VSC, the roles of rectifier and inverter can be interchanged between the stations any time without delay, without breaker switching and without polarity reversal. Both stations can independently generate or consume reactive power as required at the connection point. The VSC technology thus facilitates the connection of several converters to a common bipolar dc bus there by making it suitable for multi-terminal HVDC systems

To foster future developments in the area of HVDC and FACTS in India , as well as to disseminate technical developments a two day International conference and exhibition on ‘VSC Technology for HVDC and FACTS’ is being organized by CPRI in association with CBIP. The conference will provide valuable insight to utilities presently operating HVDC systems & FACTS and utilities contemplating HVDC as a possible transmission technology. The conference is also highly useful for system planners and utilities planning for multiple infeeds to large metropolitan cities. Besides, this conference aims at providing a forum/mechanisms for the technology and user communities to work together to ease the process of VSC technologies to fruition.

A Half-Day Tutorial

A Half-Day Tutorial by Dr. M. Rashwan is also planned on 25th May 2011 preceding the conference. The tutorial would be very useful for researchers, academia and practicing engineers pursuing power electronics in power systems.

Key Topics:

Scope of VSC based technology in HVDC, FACTS and other applications•VSC for HVDC power transmission•VSC for Renewable Integration•Control Hierarchy & System control – VSC based HVDC•VSC based FACTS controllers•City Infeed with VSC based HVDC•Modelling and simulation of VSC based systems including case studies•Mutiterminal VSC based HVDC systems•Multilevel VSC topologies for HVDC•

Besides the above key speakers, experts from academia and industry both from India and abroad have also been invited to deliver talks during the two days of the Conference. They include experts from Siemens- Germany, ABB - Sweden, Areva- France, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd., BHEL, India and CPRI, India.
