Principals Message -

Welcome to the 2019 school year. It was just so good to see the kids come back after their holiday break. As usual, they have all grown. It was a great start to the year with students showing friendship and sharing with one another.

A big welcome to our 2019 Kindergarten students and their parents. Miss Jasmine and Miss Amy are very excited to welcome their new charges. At the close of 2018 our enrolment had dipped and meant we had dropped from ten classes to nine. First week back, Mrs Dyson in the front office, was run off her feet enrolling new students. So, we’re back to ten classes. This has meant we have created a new class and been able to reduce the size of others. Mrs Clark will be joining us for 2019 to teach our tenth class. Mrs Clark worked with us last year and is an experienced teacher who appreciates our Plattsburgian ways.

Here’s to a year of adventure, fun and learning.

by the students of class 1 ThingThis week 1 Thing read the book, ‘If I was Prime Minister’ by Beck Feiner and Robin Feiner. We used this to write about things that we would do if we ever became Prime Minister.

If I was Prime Minister I would teach koalas how to do karate. If I was Prime Minister I would I would be a school teacher because I like teaching kids.If I was Prime Minister I would be the boss of the school. I would tell the teachers what we will do.If I was Prime Minister I would fill people’s buckets up.If I was Prime Minister I would build a waterslide because I like water slides. If I was Prime Minister I would be the boss of a rollercoaster. I would let the people go on it and I would go on it too.If I was Prime Minister I would help sick people because some sick people have nobody to take care of them.If I was Prime Minister I would make a pool because I want to share my little pool with little kids.If I was Prime Minister I would build a rollercoaster because I like rollercoasters. If I was Prime Minister I would give everyone cats and dogs for free and also computers and Ipads. I would feed the birds in the park. I would move all the fish to a safe place while we clean the ocean. If I was Prime Minister I would play the Kazoo while swimming with dolphins. If I was Prime Minister I would stop all the steam. If I was Prime Minister I would clean the ocean so the fish won’t get sick.If I was Prime Minister I would get people money to buy anything to have because I want to make people happy. I’m rich.If I was Prime Minister I would build a slippery slide down into the pool.If I was Prime Minister I would make a rainbow and make people happy and make people’s buckets fill up. They will be happy. If I was Prime Minister I would build a water park so they can get wet.If I was Prime Minister I would build a pool in my backyard because I like swimming. It will have waves and if people come over I will say do you have swimmers? If you don’t have your swimmers I can give you my swimmers. If I was Prime Minister I would build a tree house. If I was Prime Minister I would build a slippery slide. If I was Prime Minister I would I would buy my Dada a house. If I was Prime Minister I would build a house for my family. If I was Prime Minister I would be a school teacher. If I was Prime Minister I would be a superhero because I would help people when they fell over.

Welcome KindergartenOur new students looked fantastic in their uniforms. The students are settling in well and have had a wonderful start to their educational journey. The first few years in a child’s education are important steps in developing a love of learning and our role is to help nurture this passion and build confident learners in an environment that is safe, vibrant and challenging. Kindergarten students at Plattsburg Public School have a rich and varied program including excursions, incursions and assemblies all designed to give them a sense of enjoyment and community. Co-curricular activities are also available to Kindergarten students, which offer many opportunities to develop a love of music and sport. A very exciting year awaits, designed to promote and enhance your child’s growth and development. Pictured are a few of our new Kindergarten students.

It’s difficult to think with the extreme heat that Summer has nearly come to an end and before we weather turns chilly and the cold and flu season is upon us, we ask if families could donate a box of tissues to their class.

The NSW Department of Education requires Volunteers to bring in 100 points of identity and complete a form as part of its Child Protection strategy.

Anyone who works in the school in any voluntary capacity in classrooms, canteen or transporting students to any sporting venue etc. needs to bring in a few forms of ID and complete the form at the office as soon as you can. If you are a new parent at our school – you will need to complete this. Please see the office for further details.

The office is only able to administer ‘prescribed medication’ to students. This means medication that has been prescribed by a doctor. Should your child require medications please contact the office to arrange an appointment with the principal. We are not able to administer Panadol, topical or non-prescription medications.

The morning session at school is when core subjects are taught and we are that you keep your toddlers safe and students learning that unsupervised pre-schoolers sometimes play noisily near the classrooms and can disrupt lessons. Parents are asked to closely supervise pre-schoolers to ensure their safety and well being. Parents are encouraged to conduct social interactions at a suitable distance from the classrooms and in a quiet manner so the students can learn without distractions. Your cooperation will be appreciated.

Education in New South Wales is compulsory for all children between the ages of six years and below the minimum school leaving age. The Education Act 1990 requires that parents ensure their children of compulsory school age are enrolled at, and regularly attend school, or, are registered with the Board of Studies, Teaching and Educational Standards for home schooling. Once enrolled, children are required to attend school each day it is open for students.

Arriving at school and class on time:• Ensures that students do not miss out on important learning activities scheduled early in the day• Helps students learn the importance of punctuality and routine• Give students time to greet their friends before class• Reduces classroom disruptionLateness is recorded as a partial absence and must be explained by parents.

Here are some suggestions for setting regular routines:• Have a set time to be out of bed.• Have a set time to go to bed.• Have uniform and school bag ready the night before.• Turn the television on for a set time • Provide lots of positive encouragement.• Book doctor’s appointments, haircuts etc. after school.

What our P&C really doesParents who cringe at the very mention of the term ‘P&C’ probably have never been to a meeting. Most schools have a parent representative body, commonly called Parents and Citizens (P&C) Association. The parent committee is the voice of the parents. It’s at these meetings that decisions affecting your child at school are made. Committee meetings are usually held once a month. Any parent or guardian can attend.

Parent associations are a great way to:•get the inside story on what’s really happening in the school (not the gossip). The principal is available to answer questions and teachers sometimes attend too•influence school policy •have a say in the development of school activities such as excursions and camps and curriculum•contribute to the school’s resources through various fundraising projects•meet other parents•schools have their own budgets —but invariably they need more than the budget allows. That’s where the parent committee becomes a really valuable partner.

Plattsburg P&C runs services like the canteen and uniform shop. Fundraising is a powerful way in which to help our school get much-wanted additional resources—from extra library books to a shade cloth over a play area, new canteen kitchen or play equipment. We have a very active P&C and welcome new members. Fresh, FUN ideas to raise important funds while engaging the students and community. Plattsburg P&C runs Mother’s/Father’s Day breakfast and stalls, meal deal days, raffles, source prizes, staple raffle books, volunteer at canteen, volunteer at breakfast club, make fairy floss at events, walk a thons, athletic carnivals, Christmas in the Gully, Easter hat parade, organise fetes, source rides for events, stalls, apply for grants, Sausage sizzles, digital media festival, zone cross country, book week, education week, Wallsend Winter Fair, just to name a few. Can you help?

Our garden girls planted out their crops before the Christmas School holidays. Charlotte along with Mr D watered the crops during the break and the results speak for themselves. The garden is thriving and the girls, along with some of the teachers, tasted the tomatoes with fresh basil on some crackers. The girls exclaimed how fresh and tasty they were to store bought produce. Well done girls.
