Principals Message - We are all facing the current challenge of the Corona Virus with information being constantly bowled at us all. In response the school has cancelled some much loved events and parents and carers have stepped up by reminding children to wash their hands and by keeping sick children away from the school. As I cast my eye over school with it’s faceliſt of fresh paint I am reminded that the bricks and mortar have stood through great historical turmoil, loss and grief but also great achievements, victory and joys. I have no idea how this story ends but if I reflect on the history that our school has stood sentinel for I suspect we will come out the other side with stories of sadness and triumph. We are not a unique generation, we are part of a line of generations that have needed to rise up to the road unfolding beneath us. Let’s heed our school motto - Hasten Slowly and retain our common sense as we meet the road. March 2020 Term 1 Week 8 Newsletter Plattsburg Public School Principal: Mrs Ellen Bax. P: 02 49559196. Because of this I would like to remind everyone of a Plattsburg student who went to war and was awarded a Victoria Cross (VC). A Victoria Cross is the highest and most prestigious medal for bravery that can be awarded. It is given for valour "in the presence of the enemy". William Matthew Curry was 21 years old when he enlisted into the AIF in October of 1916. He had leſt the Wallsend district and was living in Leichardt with his mother and was employed as a wire worker. His enlistment papers describe him as being: Height: 5 feet and 5 inches Weight: 132 lbs Complexion: Fresh Eyes: Blue Hair: Fair Following is an account of William’s bravery: Private Currey was awarded the Victoria Cross for "most conspicuous bravery and daring" on 1 September 1918 at Peronne, France. He rushed a 77mm enemy field gun under heavy machine gun fire and succeeded in capturing the gun single handedly aſter killing the entire crew. He later rushed another enemy post, causing many casualties and enabling the advance to continue. He then volunteered to carry orders again under heavy gun fire for the withdrawal of an isolated company. He succeeded and returned with valuable information. He returned to Australia in March 1919 and was discharged on 2 April. He was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly in 1941 as the Labour Member for Kogarah, and retained his seat until his sudden death on 30 April 1948.

Safety ProblemsSteve the Death Star technician woke up ldquoItrsquos a Mondayrdquo he sighed ldquoGonkrdquo replied Gonk Droid Steve got up Today was a big day today they tested the Death Star on that horrible peaceful planet of Alderaan Steve got into his comfortable radiation proof black uniform and grabbed his beautiful shiny and nickel black helmet

Meanwhile Matt the other Death Star technician and his roommate Jerold the Stormtrooper were also getting ready Matt didnrsquot really want to blow up Alderaan because his favourite Maccas is on it but sacrifices had to be made Matt said ldquoGoodbyerdquo to Jerold and Marice the Dipolodoculous

Matt and Steve met up at the Death Star Laser Controls They started talking to their pet space cat Borice Borice is a calico cat that has three eyes which are all different colours His three eyes are purple red and silver

A voice on the intercom told them to ldquoBlow up Alderaanrdquo Steve went to the controls and pressed the fire button Matt was watching Borice until Steve said ldquoShizerrdquo In the few seconds Matt turned around Borice fell into the laser shaft Matt turned back around and jumped in after Borice Steve said ldquoI fixed itrdquo and turned around Matt managed to grab Borice and get out of the way of the way just before the laser fired

The next day they asked for a railing but never got to use it because the rebel scum Luke Skywalker blew up the Death Star and everyone on itBy Mark

All classes have been greatly enjoying their time in the STEM room This fortnight Stage 1 have been exploring the properties of LEGO as a building tool They have had to try and create cubes interlocking the LEGO for a strong build Students were very successful with this process Students also had to create marble mazes where they had to make sure the marble rolled easily through the maze from the start to the finish Students extended themselves by placing doors and ramps into their mazes for an extra challenge Great work

The NSW Department of Education is introducing proactive measures to limit the impact of COVID-19 in our schools Our schools have adopted social distancing measures including cancelling assemblies excursions travel some events and conferences All major arts sports and initiative activities and events will temporarily be ceased until further notice

Current advice from the Australian Government is

bull All travellers to Australia will be required to self-isolate for 14 days bull A ban on cruise liners from foreign ports arriving at Australian ports for 30 daysbull Any confirmed case of COVID-19 will be excluded until they are medically cleared to returnbull Close contacts of a confirmed case of COVID-19 will be excluded for 14 days since last contact with the confirmed casebull Students and staff who have returned to Australia and have shown no symptoms during the 14-day home-isolation period are able to return to school or work

NSW Health has processes in place to identify any close contacts of cases confirmed in Australia A close contact is a person who has spent significant time either face to face (15 minutes) or in an enclosed space (2 hours or more) as someone who has tested positive for COVID-19 It is advising these close contacts about not attending work school or early childhood and childcare services

The Department of Education continues to work closely with NSW Health to monitor and respond to developments and to ensure the safety and wellbeing of students and staff

Consistent with current guidelines children students and staff who are

unwell with respiratory illness should remain at home until symptoms resolve In accordance with our current practice if any student becomes unwell we will implement our infection control guidelines and follow the advice provided by NSW Health as appropriate As information is updated regularly please use this LIVE link to keep up to date to any changes to this information httpseducationnswgovaupublic-schoolsschool-safetynovel-coronavirusCurrent1

The best way to protect yourself from COVID-19 is the same way you would protect yourself from catching the flu or other respiratory illnesses We are actively encouraging all our community to 1 Wash your hands - Clean your hands for at least 20 seconds with soap and water or use an alcohol-based sanitiser with at least 60 alcohol 2 Cough etiquette - Cover your sneeze or cough with your elbow or with a tissue (and dispose of it immediately) Avoid close contact with people who are ill Avoid touching your eyes nose and mouth 3 Stay home if you are sick - if your child is unwell with a respiratory illness they should remain at home until symptoms clear up 4 Notify the school if your child or close family is confirmed to have the virus via Front Office or school email address

An electronic gate was installed for safety reasons and is monitored by the Administration Office This will be locked for entrance and exit during school hours After speaking into the monitor at the gate we will give authorisation to enterexitPleaes close the gate upon entering or exiting school
