Play to your strengths

1. Business is business, hobbies are for fun, be critical about what you do well and what you don’t

2. Time is money, your time is expensive so use it wisely

3. Never assume that you can run a business just because you had the idea, the two use different skills and different parts of the brain

4. Unfortunately being good at something does not necessarily mean you enjoy it…. Live with it, it’s business

5. Be critical, ask your colleagues to be critical about you, the results may scare you but the outcome will help you

Work out what you are good at

Play to your strengths

1. If you are doing something that takes up most of your time then ask yourself, could it be done just as well by somebody else, quicker and cheaper

2. Time is money, the longer it takes the more it costs

3. Time is a finite resource, use it wisely and sparingly.

4. Don’t spread yourself too thin, concentrate on the things you do better and quicker than others, let go of the rest

5. Outsourcing is not always the answer but if it removes pressure from your new company then it may have a place

Outsource the time consuming tasks

Play to your strengths

1. If you rely on a search engine to run your business, you are wasting time and effort

2. Experience takes time, don’t waste time learning things you don’t need

3. When selling a house, the people viewing notice the poor DIY jobs before the professionally finished patio. If it’s customer facing do it right.

4. Learning may be fun, but the early stages of a business require precision and speed, not the best environment for learning

5. Experience gives breadth and depth of knowledge, you get what you pay for

Use Experience, don’t learn on the job

Play to your strengths

1. If you are creative and are a great manager, you are one of the very few who can do both successfully

2. Know your limits, creativity and delivery require different skills. Get the right skills to manage the delivery

3. Ideas people tend to be more optimistic about success, sometime you need to be a little bit more down to earth

4. Don’t expect a manager to be creative, they manage through organisation and process, creativity ignores both

5. Know your own boundaries, determine where you become a liability in the delivery

An ideas person is not always a good manager

Play to your strengths

1. Micro-management is close to doing it yourself. If you were going to do that, why give the job to somebody else

2. Trust the people you delegate to, that’s what delegation is all about

3. Management is all about breadth of knowledge, not about depth

4. Micro-management is disruptive, causes confusion and does not allow your team to grow

5. Delegate where possible, don’t try to do somebody else’s job.... You are paying them to do it themselves

Don’t micro manage
